Penelope 9 Year & Rio Honey & Amburana Barrel Finished Bourbons - Short & Sweet Review

- Thanks to Penelope for sharing these two whiskeys with us! First is the Penelope 9 Year Cask Strength Bourbon Whiskey, a marriage three different mash bills of Indiana and Kentucky Bourbons, it's a four grain, non-chill filtered Bourbon that comes in at 109 proof (even though Sara says 106 proof a few times in the episode).
Next up is Penelope Rio, another blend of 3 Bourbon mash bills comprised of four grains finished first in honey barrels and then new Amburana barrels from Brazil. The finishing period was around two years in total. Rio is 98 proof and non chill-filtered.
Welcome back to "Short and Sweet", where the reviews are (usually) short, and it's very sweet of those who have shared their whiskey with us.

Congratulations for being “right” for the first time in the history of your channel. Enjoy it Brother ;)
Penelope 9yr is a solid pour that opens up nicely. Good price too.
There has been so much buzz around amburana finished whiskey and I have been waiting for my bourbon gurus to guide me through it. Great review as always. This appears to be the ultimate YMMV finish. If I can blind plug anything, I trust Barrel distillery to figure things out for all of us and I will take my chances with their amburana finish as a starting point. Thanks, Chad and Sara for all that you do
Penelope has a very good line of bourbons and finishes. I enjoy the Penelope Rose Cask finish. the 9 year sounds like a winner. Thanks for the review!
Penelope 9 year barrel proof is outstanding.
Thank you both for the review 🥃
❤❤❤ ya'll are awesome, I need to get my hubby in my reviews 😊
MGP bought them out. Sounds like quality is still great.!
Great review. I keep hunting the Rio. Still no luck. Cheers
Savor it Chad...SAVOR THE SPOUSAL CAPITULATION! 🤣
WHISKEY CHEERS 😎
I love the 9 year cask strength.
Now if only my wife would go insane long enough to tell me I'm right. 😂
Her name is Rio
And she dances on the sand
Just like that river
Twistin' through a dusty land 🎼🎵🎶
I miss the longer form videos 😢
Got a lot of different Penelopes but have never seen a Rio for sale.
I had a sample of Rio from a friend and i swear it smelled like a port-a-potty.
Love Penelope, just never found RIO
The RD1 Amburana is a very subtle finish compared to most for me. If you don’t really like it I think it’s a great place to start. Is this Rio batch 2, because they are special releases for Penelope? I got a sample of batch 1 from a friend and while it wasn’t bad it was a sweetness bomb that just coated my mouth in a odd way. Wouldn’t say it was good or bad just a feeling I’ve never had from bourbon since or before.
2% wheat, 3% barley doesn't sound like much of an influence. What is your best recommend of a Four Grain that actually gives a balanced feel (example: 51% corn, 19% wheat, 15% rye, 15% barley)?
Lol. I’ve been to carnivals that smell like urine and vomit😂😂. Even still, I’d like to pick up both these bottles.
Been looking all last year for Rio and haven't found one.
I'll trade you one for a couple of Weller Antique 107's
Do you have last year's version of the 9 year barrel strength? I ask because everywhere else lists it at 109 proof, not 106 proof.
No it’s 109, Sara just said it wrong a couple of times.
She was so disappointed it was good 🤣🤣
Non-Chill Filtered "In Stereo". Sounds like a shirt.
I am so incredibly sick of sourced/amburana finished/etc blah blah. So so so tired of it.
Its so cool to hate on amburana for all the tubers now
