      Why aren’t you shooting in 8 bit 4.2.0 h264 with the R5 ? Since you are mostly using this camera for vlogging, do you really need to spend extra time for grading and color correcting your image in post ?
      It could be interesting to compare both codecs and workflow.

    • @KylePugliese
      @KylePugliese  4 роки тому +2

      For me a huge reason I switch or started to switch from Sony to Canon was C Log and how flexible and easy it was to grade. I agree I should try it out but I don’t want to give up the dynamic range benefits of Clog and that forces me into the 10 bit files on the R5. The grading really hasn’t affected my workflow as I just have a standard layer I apply and as long as my exposure shooting was good I really never adjust scene for scene. That’s my logic but I agree I’d be interested to try out the lower bitrate modes for comparison at least.

      I'm not a V-logger but I like to film and take photos and am kind of a minimalist when it comes to gear and possession in general. I wondered, why you like to Vlog with a rather large full frame camera in the first place? What is quite appealing with the rf mount among videografers is the fact that the C70 has the new RF mount as well and probably future canon film cameras will follow, also since EF mount lenses are quite easily adaptable. After all using RF lenses allows those who use the cameras have to rely less on adapters etc. Is using a smaller size camera like the Sony ZV 1 or a canon equivilent not an option for you?
      And I wondered what camera you'd get if you could only have one? I just recently inherited a sweet collection of Leica R mount lenses along with a R4 analogue camera. I enjoy shooting film and am actually more of a point and shoot guy when it comes to digital photography. A ricoh GR is my tool of choice there. But I would now like to use my Leica R lenses on a digital camera for both photo and video and wonder what would be my best option in your opinion? Of course full frame would be nice to utilise the vintage glass but aps-c is still an option especially since I can't really afford to buy into the canon R system yet and also since full frame mirrorless are significantly larger and heavier. What made you go full frame in the first place?

    cool review/first take. But i agree... while on paper the r5 and a7siii look very similar, ACTUAL day-to-day usability should really be considered. I Do weddings professionally and how i can work with the footage actually plays a huge role in my workflow. While the r5 Do-it-all approach looks great on paper, in practice usability, a good codec (the 4k120fps of the r5 are Huge and hardly play back) thats easy to edit make a much bitter impact on my daily use, then having more megapixels. (Thes come into play maybe every 100th Picture i take?)

    • @KylePugliese

      Yeah I’ve since sold my R5 and got the a7siii. I got caught up in the RF marketing but I prefer Sony. Missing my a7riii a lot I almost got one again. I need a still camera the a7s works for now but for my stuff I prefer much higher resolution for stills

    • @Toglander
      @Toglander 3 роки тому

      @@KylePugliese - What about the R5 didn’t you like for stills? I understand the issues with video, but for stills it seems like a pretty capable camera. I’m asking because I currently have an A7RIII and am in the market for a new camera. While I like my Sony, I like the ergonomics, fully touch and high resolution lcd display, and how the shutter door closes when the lenses are removed on the R5. That being said, changing systems is an expensive move and I don’t want to make the wrong decision.

    • @KylePugliese
      @KylePugliese  3 роки тому

      It was 100% the video codecs nothing with stills. It might be the best camera on the market for stills (the R5) other than the Alpha 1 that just came out and is way more expensive. I just didn’t want to juggle systems and I’m video centric now. The codecs were massive files that always required proxies.

    Great review. The R5 just looks better here on my calibrated monitor (apart from the wobble of course). Also for all the walking vlog stuff the R5 in 1080 8 bit upscaled to 4K looks perfectly fine.

    • @KylePugliese
      @KylePugliese  4 роки тому +1

      Yeah I’d agree and you’re viewing after the UA-cam compression which never helps. Canon just has a pleasing image that’s what originally made me start to step over from Sony. I still feel like it’s a bit of the ARRI vs RED scenario

      @@KylePugliese That's it, both look amazing; the workflow for vlogs may be better suited to the A7siii until better computing of the h.265 codec... but higher specs on the A7siii are also a drainer on resources according to my friend who has full spec iMac pro

    If the AF results are truly representative, Sony has some catching up to do. I have Sony now and respect what they have done with AF. Your examples suggest the R5 is much quicker and better tracking. I can work around most everything that's not so good with the R5, if the AF ups the keeper rate.

  • @BrentODell
    @BrentODell 2 роки тому

    I really have to scratch my head at the way this camera was marketed/positioned at launch. I was hyped as the greatest video camera, yet ended up having a lot of compromises and issues in that respect.
    On the other hand, it is, IMHO, the best wildlife/action/sports photography tool for the money, even a year and a half later. Sure, the Z9, Alpha 1, and Canon's own R3 beat it in certain aspects, but they are all much more expensive. Every test/review I've seen puts the AF speed and accuracy fairly close to those 'flagship' bodies at a more reasonable(although still high) price, and it's smaller and lighter than the Z9 by a considerable margin, especially once you factor in long lenses.

    Pretty crazy how muchn wobble comes off the 15-35mm with the R5. For the price this seems pretty absurd. Do you think this is going to be a software fix?

    • @KylePugliese
      @KylePugliese  4 роки тому +2

      I’m hoping they have the ability to shut off the in body stabilization so you can just leave the lens on during video. That should help a lot as the distortion is likely from the wide angle and the sensor moving around a lot. The ibis is great for photos, the best I’ve used, but it comes at crippling video because the sensor has so much freedom to move.

    • @Jakevx1k
      @Jakevx1k 4 роки тому +1

      Kyle Pugliese thanks for the response. I see. Are you saying that you cannot turn off the IBIS on the R5? I am very curious how welL the stabilization in the lens is. Currently have the lens but waiting on the R5. Thank you for making this video. Very insightful

    • @KylePugliese
      @KylePugliese  4 роки тому +1

      Right now the switch for stabilization on the lens controls both the lens and the IBIS. You can turn digital stabilization on/off separately (which I want to compare now) but not just the IBIS.

    • @KylePugliese
      @KylePugliese  4 роки тому +1

      It does help zooming in a bit I just hate losing the 15mm I wish I could lock the sensor only. You figure with how they have to bend light at 15mm the wobble makes sense if the sensor is moving around.

  • @Benjamin_Jehne
    @Benjamin_Jehne 4 роки тому +2

    The AF in the A7rIII was the first, that steps up the game at Sony but it was never perfect. I have it since the first day, and for me as a stills photographer, it’s the first camera in almost two decades, that I don’t feel that I want more or need more, so it will work until it dies.
    The RIV was a step to far. They should’ve stayed with 42 mpix but with a completely new sensor.
    The R5 is now the newest and latest from Canon so it should be better against the A7rIII with its 5 years old sensor. I think it would be harder against the rIV af wise.

    • @KylePugliese
      @KylePugliese  4 роки тому

      Yeah I have no gripes with the a7riii and frankly it was incredibly tough for me to sell because I’ve loved it so much. But I’ve really switched to video centric workflows. When the rIV came out the only feature I even noticed was face auto tracking while using an external monitor. And that wasn’t enough at all to justify an upgrade for me.
