I really wanted the R5 but my budget said R6. No regrets whatsoever! It's a really fun camera to use and I love its image quality for both photos and videos. Minor quibbles: I wish you could program video settings to one of the custom functions. Also, the white AF box is hard to see in the EVF. I wish it were green or red instead. Otherwise, I'm in love with my R6.
For $1900 I'd go to the Spanish or French Riviera. Or Kawaii. Or take a road trip down the PCH.

I own an a7Riii and wouldn't trade it for an r5/r6 even if they were the same price, and I'm not a Sony fanboy so go figure. Save that money, book a flight to Japan and enjoy shooting :)

If I was rich/unlimited funds I would like an R6 to complement my A7Riii... but then you are dealing with all new lenses and that gets messy quick. But the R6 is a sweet camera.

I am between R6, A7RII and A7III. I will switch from 5dm3 with canon glass. Which one will be the best for me? I will do photography. R6 is good but mp count is so low. I don't wan't to spend that much of money for 20 mp. Eye AF was not working on Sony as good as Canon. Did the latest update solve the problem?

I just moved from a7Riii to R5, finally feels like I'm using a device that I don't actively dislike using. My pinky doesn't dangle and my hand doesn't feel like it's slowly being cut into. The Sony bodies suck with lenses heavier than a few hundred grams.

I would rent the R5 with a nice RF lens for the weekend and put it through its paces. Then I would rent a Sony A7R3 with a good Tamron lens. Then I would ask Is there enough difference to justify the Canon. The only reason I could see to go with Canon would be the 85 F1.2 prime for portraits/weddings. If the F1.2 gave me a look I could not get elsewhere and I had profitable weddings/shoots that justified the price, the Canon would win out. Otherwise, I can buy two Sony A7R3s with Tamron lenses for the same price. Actually, I would probably buy an A7R3 for stills and an A7S3 for video and share lenses. That would be a powerful wedding setup.

Had the 5D4, sold it and got the EOS R, was planning on going to upgrade it to the R5, but the more I hear and read about it, I'll likely be going for the R6. I will be losing resolution (which I agree is not such a loss) and an upper screen (which I really prefer the mode wheel), but will be getting IBIS, Better follow focus, better ergonomics, dual sd cards, better video capabilities (120 fps hd, auto iso in video...), better evf. I must have missed some more, but, for the price, and the fact that I'm all in at canon lens (16-35, 35 1.8 rf, 50 1.4, 85 1.4, 70-200 2.8 II, 24-70 2.8) I believe going for the R6 is the right way for me

After shooting Canon digital for the past 15 odd years my biggest problem with the Canon R is ergonomics. I am used to the 1D and 5D series cameras. The ergonomics of the R are just a little bit off... enough that when you should with both a 5D and R side by side it throws you a bit. The R5 and R6 seem to have a lost identical ergonomics to the 5D series with the only exception being the top LCD.
That said I don't understand why Canon would cripple the R6 and make the camera shoot in auto when hitting the video record button while in photo mode. Having to switch the camera to video mode first in order to not shot video in auto mode throws a speed bump on front of every hybrid shooter.

I switched for the EOS R to the R6. Never looked back. In fact, I had both for a month before realizing I never touched my EOS R. The increase in low light performance, dynamic range, more responsive menu(processor actually makes the R6 quicker), and better video features sold me. Needless to say, I never missed the 10 extra MP on the EOS R.

@@xkben90 I miss my R's 30mpix currently shooting with the R6. Lets see how it goes for the next 6 months but I can see myself moving to the R5 to gain the ability to crop more when shooting wildlife. Otherwise R6 is good except I can not find spare Canon batteries anywhere. All sold out.

Great review. These days there are a lot of great cameras out there. I’ve used Canon ‘5 Series’ cameras for over 10 years. I still have and use my 5Dii. They just work, and work effortlessly.
For the ‘wet coast’ we want gear that stands up to the sudden rain shower, or light drizzle. My 5 series cameras never had a problem. We is R5s as main cameras for photo and video, and I use an R as my second camera. For stills/events, the R5 is the main camera with a 24-70 2.8 on it, and the R wears the 70-200 2.8.
For video we do shoot 8K and crop sometimes, or grab still frames.
The R5 just checks all the boxes for our use case. Looking at the R6 as a second cam in the next year or so.

I bought r6 first. Nice camera but I upgraded to r5 as I love to shoot birds and 45 mo suit me well. I am coming from Sony A7r4 and before it a9 and A7r3 and I basically find R5 is the best of both worlds: it is like A9 except with 45mp. Very little rolling shutter at 20fps. I love 100-500 lens. It is just as sharp as Sony 200-600 but smaller and lighter and easier to handhold for longer. Camera is just more responsive than A7r4. A7r4 everything clears very slow, and rolling shutter is pretty bad with silent shutter. Both are great systems

I had the a7RIII and couldn't get along with the controls, poorly arranged on a too-cramped body. Ergonomic update arrived with the a7RIV but some handling and usability issues persist which keep the camera from "disappearing" in my hands the way enthusiast- and professional-level Canons and Nikons do. Sony cameras constantly and unpleasantly remind me I'm working with a device rather than a camera. For me, the handling advantages alone are work the cost differential.

I think it's definitely worth the price difference over the Sony. It's more refined in every single way. It also takes 3 different Sony bodies to do what the R5 does. You didn't mention file size, the Raw or cRaw file from the Canon are considerably smaller that the Sony's, less disk space, less stress on your computer, and easier to edit.. i think if you compare the image quality to the A7R4 it's also very similar to the R5. Not much has happened in 3 years.

Yes it’s 2024 and I’m commenting about the long replaced a7Riii and the soon to be replaced Canon R5. I currently own both cameras. One system will be sold and while I really like the Sony (even the menu system) it will be sold in favor of the Canon. The main driver for me is ergonomics, autofocus and IBIS. No third party FF glass on Canon (for now) is a drawback but I’m good with the RF 100-500 and adapted EF lenses. As someone else commented, the R5 disappears in hand and that’s important to me. Both cameras are really excellent though and if the R5 hadn’t dropped in price so much I’d probably still be shooting the a7Riii.

For me 20 Mpixels is not the camera I am looking for, Was fine when shooting a 1Dx or even my older 1DIV but after using an a9 see no reason to settle for only 20 Mpixels unless you really need a Canon at that price point. So is the R5 worth it as an alternative to Sony, not as a swap but on its merits alone. Or do you think its overpriced for what it is?

A good camera is a camera that invites you to hold it, make you want to take it out to shoot photo. Once you are out there, it stay out of the way and let you enjoy the process.
That makes the differences. The Sony will be more expensive per photo, if it sits inside the dry cabinet more often.
I can’t explain it. If you put canon and sony in front of me, to play with, I will pickup the canon, hold it, play around with it even if I am not taking photo. I never do that with a sony, I just wouldn’t pick it up unless I have to.

Is it okay to have an A Cam of Sony and a B cam of Canon? Are there any major flaws if I do it? I often have seen many people sticking to one company. Any suggestions? I have canon 80d with 4 lenses and find the Sony a7siii really intriguing. Should I get the a7siii as an A Cam or just stick with canon for the lens that I already own?

The only issue is each camera is going to have a slightly different look - colors etc. So it will take some work in post processing to make them look similar. This is why filmakers like to use same systems.

And I have never ever used the top display on my old 5D II...So R6 II Will probably be perfect. ..because it will never get 20Mpix again....I hope😉

Get yourself a A7Riii and LAEA-4 adaptor so you can use all the old quality minolta lenses dirt cheap on the 2nd hand market, why pay thousands for lenses made of plastic, when you know a minolta Maxuum will last a lifetime. Its the environmental option to prevent waste and makes for a new hobby collecting old lenses, you see photography less for pixel peeping and more for the ART we know photography to be. Fact is the only difference in many cases between a $5000 dollar lens and a $100 one is 2 minutes in lightroom to boost contrast and correct chromatic aberration.

Just what I am looking for, because I’m thinking of selling my a7rii. The R5 is more $$, but can do so much more, right? Sports, Landscape, and all. My big decision is going to be between the A7IV and the A7RIII. Currently on the A7RII (which has been abused - screen no longer works and a problem with the viewfinder - but still works)... The big thing that I want is better AF... especially when it comes to Wildlife (R2 is pants). I was thinking of taking a step back in MP. Most of the time I don't need 42MP, but sometimes it is useful (32-36MP would be fine). Wish you could choose the RAW MP you are shooting as you can in some Nikons.
