    Why am I comparing the R5 to the a7r3? Because the a7r3 is my current primary shooter because I didn't like the a7r4, or any other Sony camera, as much as the a7r3. We made a video about why I didn't switch to the a7r4 (but Tony did): ua-cam.com/video/Yy-5RVm6Mck/v-deo.html

      I find the A7RIII produces nicer files than the A7RIV anyway, especially at higher ISOs or when recovering shadows.

      @الله جل جلاله There is nothing wrong with Sony's menu. Once you use it more often, it will be easier. Especially with the FN shortcut and the 10+ customizable buttons that you can assign almost everything to.
      Form factor on the recent models is fine, even though I have a large hands and prefer DSLR feel and grip. If you have a small hands it should be enough.
      There are many cheap models that you can buy. Look them up and start making money.

    Watching this as a Nikon user. I was intrigued and bought into Sony and used it as a second camera for a year. What I learned? For most people, unless your system is truely limiting your real world usage, time and money can be better spent on true photography projects, learning skills, or traveling. Or simply get a better tripod and some new lights, or sign up for an online course for Art History. Camera companies are constantly adding new features and trying to leap forward, don't be distracted. Or you will want to switch every two years.

    • @77dris
      @77dris 4 роки тому +4

      Exactly Yeah, brand switching makes little sense. I stuck with Canon for 15 years as a pro, tried other brands and there was never any real reason to switch. I almost went to the A7RIII once but tried the body and hated it (also didn't like the Fuji). I'm glad I stuck around.
      And in 15 years I've never once seen anybody take better pictures or get more clients when switching brands. Never. And I've seen people who have gone thru all Canon cameras, then Nikons lineup, then Sony, then medium format, then back to Canon... never a meaningful difference.

      I will say in slight contrast, many are switching to mirrorless from DSLR and may be trying to figure out who to buy into. I had Canon, I'm sticking with Canon. Bought only an RP because I'd like to wait for all this chaos with the R5/6 to subside and get a pro body later. Starting to invest in RF glass now...

    • @Chazyfizzlez
      @Chazyfizzlez 4 роки тому +5

      Yeah, I would agree. I've spent thousands of dollars switching from Fuji to Sony to the Canon RF mount (and Leica for personal work) the photos never got much "better". In real world use, without pixel peeping or worrying about an extra stop or two dynamic range, all modern camera are going to give you great results. Switching systems is almost always a waste of money.

      @SwitchRich I agree and I was going to make that same point. However, I also think it would be nice to be able to use the typical touch gestures because that's what people are used to and as younger people start getting into photography it's going to feel weird without those gestures. When Sony adds them though, they also need to keep that instant way to check the focus spot and scroll through like we currently have.

    Spend your money and switch to Canon. Then in a couple weeks, spend even more money and switch to the new Nikon Z7 II. It makes good entertainment. Love the live testing. It shows us that photography is more than just the spec sheet. I don't see enough technical difference to make me want to switch, but I can understand it if you don't enjoy the Sony experience. The similarity in the results tells us that we might be leveling off with mirrorless technology. I hope Nikon leapfrogs into the same pond. Hopefully you can get your D850 feel back with mirrorless benefits.

    I don’t understand why people keep complaining about the user experience on the Sony bodies. Yes, it’s different, but once you learn how to set it up and what settings work for you, you shouldn’t be constantly struggling. And, if you just shoot such a huge variety of subjects that you are constantly changing settings and changing the type of settings you need to tweak, there are SIX custom recall functions that allow you to preload whatever settings you use for whatever you plan on shooting. Also, yes, it is nice that Canon has a more developed touch system, and I would like it if that came to Sony, but there is nothing hindering about the current way to review pictures. Everything is accessible with your right hand without ever having to take it off the camera. If you are swiping or pinching to zoom, you have to take your hand off the grip unless you happen to be left-handed. Yea, Canon’s touch interface is nice-it really is-but that doesn’t make Sony’s interface bad. It just has room for improvement. And, any client who can’t figure out how to use two buttons and the dial wheel/d-pad probably would struggle with whatever else you try to give them.

      Yeah, the price difference is huge and A7r III still is a great camera. From picture quality point of view A7r IV is not supposed to be that much better than the earlier model. Actually beside the pixel count A7r III has in some areas slightly better tested performance. But other areas were improved so a test between most recent models would be kind of more fair comparison.

  • @Linealo
    @Linealo 4 роки тому +3

    Edit: They test the A7r3, not the A7III - the video title was wrong and I misheard it because I read it simultaneously. So ignore my argument about resolution below - the other points mostly still apply.
    To be fair, the A7III is already from 2018. While it is still amazing and - be honest - still does what you usually need, it definitely will have a harder time 'winning' this specific competition - alone because it just has half the resolution. Other factors as the (back then 10bit being non standard) video features and the usual Sony IBIS in the small E mount won't help it either. But it's neither the less interesting to see how those things can be done 'better' or 'worse' - depends. In photo mode, the difference is even smaller.
    Another thing is to note that Sony's newest photo-camera (the A9ii and A7RIV) are still "older" than the canon and sport the old processor instead of the new one in the A7SIII model. With the new CPU we should see some bump in speed, accuracy and AF-AI-Power. So for now this comparison is surely a statement, but all things considered, it also doesn't really tells us anything else than "Sony needs to release a matching model on their next production cycle" - Which is something that always applies anyways and should never be not expected.
    So probs for making this video and putting the work into it - it definitely shows where cameras have evolved and where is still space left, but except for showing that tendency, there's not a lot to take from it - and that can be and is fine too. Both cameras are amazing and capable of most things you throw at them. The other points like feel and colors are very subjective and you should chose the tool you need - brand loyalty will not bring you more clients ;)

The eos R would take me about two hours to get my work done and the sony a7r3 a half hour to do all my work with more detail in the photos. Canon is a good LEARNING camera but that's all it is a LEARNING camera for newbies who want to LEARN photography. If i had a cheap photoshoot job and cheap customers i would give them the crappy canon photos but if i have high paid clients or do it for myself i would use the sony a7r3. Chelsea has an obvious fondness for Canon (We all have a favourite) and so although she is being even in this video, it has to include that slight and fully declared favouritism, and also you can't ignore that she is using an old generation Sony and an old and known soft 85mm GM against the latest and no doubt very good R5 and 85mm 1.2. I'd now really like to see Tony do a third part to this as a real balance, as someone using the latest generation Sony and maybe with more fondness for the Sony system? Their joint views probably will give an overall more balanced result. I used the R5 as someone who never used canon before and thought it was like a brick of a camera, heavy as an old DSLR, I couldn't stand the ergonomics with the weirdly placed dial on the top and thought it was notably softer than the A7Riv (using a sigma 85mm not the soft GM). I sent it back pretty quick. Nice camera, no doubt, but definitely not overall better than the A7Riv, and very much just about what feels right to you.

      Bro she knows how to use HSS... Of course. As evidence, the F1.4 shots are at 1/640. She picked the ambient exposure she wanted very deliberately.

    Over 20k in sony lenses and decided to stay with the a7r3 when the a7r4 came out. I considered returning to canon but it's just not remotely worth it as the loss would be to great

    I never change complete system after few years, because of marginally different some few setup, or handling. Somebody mentioned before me, not very fair comparison one with lens hood and other w/o lens hood. I have experience about it. Min. 5-10% more flare hazard if not connected lens hood! Again follow other commenter-. A7rIII + 1,4/85GM vs R5 + 1.2/85 cost relation for marginally different? Like PC units, every half year all competitors step forward little. Will you dump again, if Nikon Z7II step forward with 0,5% progress two month later over R5? 2021 rumored A9r in 2021Q1-Q2? .-)
    I always prefer your videos, but I feel first time something not deep and reasoned related the topic. Normally doesn't matter for me who work with kind of brand and switch ect. I know the best famous videos todays - I switch.......... ect.
    Related my 4 years MILC using experience the R5 + 1.2/85 lose my second first benefits of MILC systems, the compact size and weight.
    It was my first impression after few event photography in long term work day when put my SLR gear to my vitrin at home. 12kg bag vs 8kg bag. My arms was not tired ( my neck ect.) and I worked very free without somany disturbance. This is the reason mainly I work with my A7rIII + SEL1.8/85 portrait lens and my old and loved A-mount CZ 1.4/85 with A-FE adaptor keep at home mainly. There is not significant different between two in edited images, but overall the work with more comfortable and add more free creative work. Very few situation I use my 1.4/85 planar for SLR in studio when the final image required high quality as I can in the corners.
    So it was funny for me not very technically.
    I like you and your videos. I just put my observation notes first time .
    No question for me. I'm Minolta user from 1987, so never interest Canikon products in real my work. Somany situation the Canikon products offered little better chose in 90's or after 2000, but it never was enough to swap in my case. I was unhappy when Sony bought complete Minolta, today I happy because the Sony MILC products means innovation witches working well my bunch of old fashion A mount lenses and the new FE line up very complete and great. Other user think different it is right. If all user like same system something is wrong :-)
    I'm not hardcore brand fun. I prefer all photographer owned systems, because their decision, their experience. If it's Pentax or Nikon lol OK. For you from today it is RF system :-)

    Comparing an older generation Mirroless with a latest one that's just not fair. Try comparing it with Sony A7R IV and that's when the real challenge starts.

      The R4 wouldn't have performed any different, but it would have added unneccessarily large files: ua-cam.com/video/Yy-5RVm6Mck/v-deo.html

    Second video comparing the R5 vs a7riii today. Why not the a7riv. I see you’re saying you didn’t like it but that not comparing what the latest offering from on company vs another’s super new flagship. 🤦🏾

    Also I just ordered a A7riv arrives Friday I just sold my Canon 6dmkii with 24 to 105 1.4 but I'm keeping some of my Canon lenes. I now have Sony 7ii, A7rii, and A9 selling the 7rii and a7ii so I will only have the two A7riv, A9 I have Several Sony lenses. I have purchased from KEH but was able to get a better price on the A7riv from a New Jersey store at 2749.99 couldn't turn that down. Oh by the the way great video. I leave Saturday for MAINE driving from Florida to shoot fall colors.

    I think that Chelsea should definitely watch some of Tony's videos about how gear doesn't matter
    If you need to pixel-peep to tell the difference, maybe it's not worth several $K to change systems
    and with all that's currently going on in the world you probably won't get enough use to justify switching now, best to wait until we settle into the "new normal" and reassess our needs

    Since you have used the Canon R before (or Tony has) and now use the R5, does the R5 seem to have better color and better dynamic range than the original Canon R in a comparison? How much are you gaining with the R5 over the R for photo use? (Only asking as some people may only have the budget for a Canon R, just starting out in FF.)

      I prefer the look of the EOS R sensor for the money. I thought the R5 would knock me out with its colour science but it was too similar to the Sony A7R IV.

    I’m also considering the switch from and to the same cameras. From your experience with the a7siii, have they improved any of the playback features or usability with the new menu / touch system? I know it’s only a 12mp camera for stills, but if there are some improvements on that camera, maybe it’s an indication the future a7 and a9 cameras will improve too? Willing to wait it out and continue using my Sony kit before switching, it’s tempting though.

    🙁Why dont you use a lens hood on all the lenses!? ... All the bells and whistles yet skip the basic benefits of using a lens hood? I would understand if you'd need to constantly adjust a polarizing filter but it's clearly not the case here... 😒

    they look exactly the same so why would i buy the canon which is 3x more expensive and it overheats?

  • @barryobrien1890
    @barryobrien1890 4 роки тому

    Nice job. It's a bit unfair to compare the canon to the much older Sony. If you don't have to move now I would wait for the a7r3 replacement which should be a better match to the canon. I am not sure the a7r4 is that camera. Seems like a lot to spend on switching for marginal improvements. If you are totally new and have the money for canon glass then go r5

    I don't get the change, she said she changed from Canon to Nikon and Sony due to image quality. But here imagine quality is the same. My best guess is that she didn't liked the Sony from the start and just compromised using it for the better image quality and eye af.
