Thank you for the review. I think you are the only guy that addressed the codec problem. If you get the latest AMD an nVidia cards please put them to a test. I think it would be the best comparison of the year.
Yes, the codec is probably the biggest issue with the R5, much bigger than the overheat. Canon is coming out with new codecs in firmware updates (maybe this month) along with Clog 2 and Clog 3, but to me having 4.2.0 would be a game changer.

Interesting you like the image of the A7III better than that of the A7S III. Makes sense I guess given the former downsamples from a 6K image. Surprised the 10-bit color and 4.2.2. did not help sway things. Damn, that gives me pause in purchasing an A7S III now. I upgraded my A7S gen I to an A7III two years back. Will be very interesting to see what Sony does with the A7 IV.

The R5 has probably the best video of any mirrorless you can buy (the A7SIII is the only real competitor though it falls short with ultimate sharpness). The video is more than just useable.
4k only? :) C70 is better than R5 and A7sIII in every way, and it can be full frame easily. It's the ultimate event, run'n'gun, small production, corporate, wedding, all around small business camera on the market, no mirrorless can touch it.

Thanks for your thoughts Max. I am trying to decide between the two myself. I am eagerly awaiting the (hopefully) upcoming firmware form Canon. But I agree, this situation requires renting both and trying them out. Good luck with your new channel.
I chose the R5 as a complement to my C200 and some Ursas, so for me the R5 helps grab run and gun b-roll either hand-held or gimbal. The cinema cameras do longer-form interview content. So for me, the record limit is immaterial, and I have yet to get it to overheat on set. I love everything about this camera so far, and I don't even have the RF lenses yet. Despite that, I'm getting incredible handheld stuff in 10 bit that is totally useable next to my C200 in c-raw. I have a 2015 iMac, and I've been pleasantly surprised how fast the 10 bit H265 files transcode in Final Cut Pro (faster than the C200 raw files). I can go have a coffee, or grab a bite, and the files are transcoded. So for me, this thing is a dream, and the photo-capabilities are truly next level. Thanks for all you do!!

@@fullbars I would, and people would certainly do with the R5. The fact you didn't mention the R5 pretty much sums up why the perspectives from videographers and photographer matter.
Hey, might be a bit late for the party. is the camera sold? I was thinking of picking one up from germany, however i'm living in Sweden if that is an issue. Wasn't really looking for the 24-70 since I have one for the EF mount but depending on what we're talking I might consider getting the RF one instead. I'll send you my email if the camera is still available. Ps. just found your channel, looked at a few videos and will def. subscribe! Keep it up!
Why argue. Almost every serious youtubers use the a7s3. It's crazy to mix cameras unless you review cameras and lenses. Stick with one system and get a great workflow. In the end nobody really notices the minor differences and you will drive yourself crazy. It's better to let it go to someone who will use it instead of collecting dust on the shelf. Great review.
Max, you're saying Canon went with 4:2:2 as if there are no benefits to it. 4:2:2 is better for keying green screen footage. I actually wish the Canon had 4:4:4 but that's for higher end cameras. Point is, if something is better, why would you want them to go with something lesser?
I came to conclusion that a super detailed image is not always good for "cinematic" picture. My opinion was confirmed after the Brandons Lee review of A7Siii when he told that he reduced a details in post of his A7Siii footage. And his footage was so pleasing and beautiful. So even not the most detailed 4k of A7Siii is enough for me o think.
Exactly ... was about to post the same. If it's more and more crisp it starts to feel like video or a game. I have seen footage with black mist filter (which actually reduces the sharpness and some detail) which looked much more pleasing and has still tons of detail. And nobody crops in when watching a film 😀
I appreciate your honest and unbiased review. You touched on a lot of aspects that are very helpful for a lot of people considering which one will be best for their workflows. Thank you!
Super classy review and video. I know you never liked the 5DIV and EOS-R when they came out, so to hear such high praise about the R5 sure says a lot. I think for you it's a no brainer to keep the Sonys since that is what you've always shot. For those of us who are pro photographers and also want to do video, the R5 is a dream come true. (the only thing I disagree with is the 1080p which seems to be one of the best 1080p on the market in the R5, much better than the R or other previous gen cameras) I hope your R5 finds a great home and can't wait to watch more of your videos here and on Max Tech.
Also, I’ve been super impressed with the max tech channel. Hard to imagine a video a day, but you really have done it well. It snowed in Spokane and two hours later I see you with a video talking about snow in Spokane. That’s some efficient workflow for sure.
Hi Max, Disclaimer typo competition. There's a missing "we" in the affiliate links section. Please donate my winnings to a charity of your choice! BobUK.
Just about to sell my GH5S and all my MFT lenses. The upgrade is between these two cameras. I’m leaning towards the R5 with each new firmware. The “overheating” debacle sucks but there are work arounds that I’m comfortable with: Overheating => 4K oversampled crop mode ftw No full HDMI => internal 8K RAW better imho Native ND adapter for EF ISO performance still stellar for 45MP 45 MP stills for landscapes 4KLQ good enough for UA-cam Canon colors Track DPAF AF is just amazing (Sony too!) Canon has more interesting cinema line imho Editing performance won’t be an issue with new Apple ARM laptops (based off iPad Pro). Fully accelerated 10 bit 4:2:2 in h264 and H265.
Canon, as usual, has a camera that's almost perfect, but they cripple it just enough so that you end up having to make hard choices... stupid 30 minute recording limit, overheating, no full-size HDMI port, no real recording video to both cards. Why?
The deciding difference amongst all these small differences is the pixel zize of the sanner, there the R 5 simply rules & i think that this is the reson why exactly in portrait shots the faces and facial expresiions come out much better than the S 3. And if you record with the Atmos Ninja V and remove the memory cards than there is really no overheating problem anymore

I preordered my a7sIII and it is still not here and actually so many annouced cameras get shipped so late that it is simply silly to announce them so early ... you get hyped about a camera that is not actually for sale...
@@ivillious7573 Lucky, I used mine my R5 for a month and would get overheating warnings after short clips and photos. I had to return it and got a A7Siii. I really loved using it, especially with all my EF glass. I also was shooting in August, so the summer heat might have played a factor.
Great job dude... loved that you're totally transparent, honest and not compromised with any potential 'leaning-on' from the corps. I have both too and the Canon is hard to beat when it comes to IQ and ergos. Clearly with your workflow, it makes total sense to go with the A7S III and that EVF and second ISO is a dream... Serious question: Why not keep the Canon if you love the lenses so much? Invest in the lenses and when the R5ii comes out then hopefully that will solve your other issues? Hope you get better fast man. I was sick for almost two months it sucked.
For your use case - the Sony is a no brainer. It will be interesting what happens with the R5 with upcoming CRAW light, CLOG 2,3 and recording codec changes. They need to remove the darn 30 minute limit though.

Max. you want more subscribers? GIVE THE R5 AWAY. all the other reviewers are giving shit away. give the R5 to a new home.
Your videos are very very informative and you put a lot of work into them. Keep it up
That's the most polite way of telling your girlfriend; it's over..
do u get the monitor and finder is warmer than the actual video when u compare it on an NLE? or perhaps my monitor and finder on the a7siii needs recalibration by Sony?
Wait for the new update before you sell. These two companies are still trying to compete even post release.
the 4k standard quality won't get better tho...
This is videographer perspectives mostly. Keep that in mind.
@@fullbars No, we are talking about the likes of wedding videographers and photographers. They are also photography focused cameras.
@@fullbars I would, and people would certainly do with the R5. The fact you didn't mention the R5 pretty much sums up why the perspectives from videographers and photographer matter.
What if you hook the R5 to Atomos Ninja V? Will it record externally at 10bit 4:4:4 without limit?
Yep.
@@lacesoutchris that's good news.
Two months later and still on back order
Спасибо за честное мнение! Я знал что ты не изменишь Сони:))
For the tiny minority of you who do not speak Russian: "Thank you for your honest opinion. I knew you were going to keep the Sony."
@@hcl8836 i bought two ProMist's :-) Like it a lot!
@@hcl8836 We use black pro mist all the time too. Great filters.
I appreciate your honest and unbiased review. You touched on a lot of aspects that are very helpful for a lot of people considering which one will be best for their workflows. Thank you!
The best tech reviewer ! You give your viewers what they want, kudos to you
Super classy review and video.
(the only thing I disagree with is the 1080p which seems to be one of the best 1080p on the market in the R5, much better than the R or other previous gen cameras)
I hope your R5 finds a great home and can't wait to watch more of your videos here and on Max Tech.
Camera conspiracy sent me. :)
Subbed and liked.
“I really like you, but we cannot be together.”
Also, I’ve been super impressed with the max tech channel. Hard to imagine a video a day, but you really have done it well. It snowed in Spokane and two hours later I see you with a video talking about snow in Spokane. That’s some efficient workflow for sure.
Max do you know if AMD cards do support 4:2:2?
I don't yet know when to set the A7SIII to 4:2:2 but I want the piece of mind my workflow won't change
Before watching this: doubting my choice of choosing R5
After watching this: am affirmative I made the right choice!
Thanks lol.

What happened at 17:54? An overheat issue? 😂
Just about to sell my GH5S and all my MFT lenses. The upgrade is between these two cameras. I’m leaning towards the R5 with each new firmware. The “overheating” debacle sucks but there are work arounds that I’m comfortable with:
Overheating => 4K oversampled crop mode ftw
No full HDMI => internal 8K RAW better imho
Native ND adapter for EF
ISO performance still stellar for 45MP
45 MP stills for landscapes
4KLQ good enough for UA-cam
Canon colors
Track DPAF AF is just amazing (Sony too!)
Canon has more interesting cinema line imho
Editing performance won’t be an issue with new Apple ARM laptops (based off iPad Pro). Fully accelerated 10 bit 4:2:2 in h264 and H265.
R5 is worth buying
Canon, as usual, has a camera that's almost perfect, but they cripple it just enough so that you end up having to make hard choices... stupid 30 minute recording limit, overheating, no full-size HDMI port, no real recording video to both cards. Why?
Have the codec issues and heating been resolved? Looking to upgrade from a73 to a new camera
Get well soon, Max. Allah bless you.
Nice review. So perfectly breakdown every aspect.
Thank you ❤️
A7SIII no brainer for video. R5II will fix the can’ts, won’ts, limits & encoding issues. But by that time, A7S4 will come out. LOL
I also like the BMPCC4K but it is sooooo big and heavy full rigged. And the data is also soooo big 🙈 so i ordered the A7SIII
Great Video! I loved watching it but meanwhile i am pretty pissed of about this years new cameras. I preordered my a7sIII and it is still not here and actually so many annouced cameras get shipped so late that it is simply silly to announce them so early ... you get hyped about a camera that is not actually for sale...
17:54 - What was that?
That overheating issue would keep me away from the R5, those I just do stills and not video
Got mine a month ago never ever had a warning even for photo and video for hours
@@ivillious7573 Lucky, I used mine my R5 for a month and would get overheating warnings after short clips and photos. I had to return it and got a A7Siii. I really loved using it, especially with all my EF glass. I also was shooting in August, so the summer heat might have played a factor.
@@ivillious7573 Sorry but...no one grab so long if you are a videast...it's a non sense argument
I just can't wait for Apple silicon to handle 4:2:2!!
Hi Max! You mentioned in the video you'd link the latest clog lut in the description but it doesn't seem to be here. Hope you and your family feel better soon! Cheers.
Interested in the R5 if its still available!
any update on this comparison?
Serious question: Why not keep the Canon if you love the lenses so much? Invest in the lenses and when the R5ii comes out then hopefully that will solve your other issues? Hope you get better fast man. I was sick for almost two months it sucked.
Dang, that’s legit! I’m getting the Sony!
Thank you 🙏🏻
Thanks for the video...did you ever get to try Nikon Z6/Z7 for video and photo....if possible can you make a video on that?
You need an 8K camera, why not keep this one until a better one comes along?
Do you still have the canon?
How much u want for ur camera
For your use case - the Sony is a no brainer. It will be interesting what happens with the R5 with upcoming CRAW light, CLOG 2,3 and recording codec changes. They need to remove the darn 30 minute limit though.
I shoot sony. 5 6400s and an fs5mkii. I imagine Canon r5 footage will be buttery smooth on incoming silicon Macs!
