I chose the a7III because of the price and performance. Grabbed two Zeiss primes, 25mm and 85mm, because I don't go cheap on lenses. This trio covers 99.9% of anything I want to shoot.
If I HAD to switch to Sony I guess I'd get the A7III. It's certainly the best bang for the buck with the A9 focus system and the great high ISO performance. Ben, you can get massive prints with an a7 III. I've gotten massive prints from D2h which is 4 megapixels. Basically all will make massive prints if shot properly. We have an a9 file 40x60 on the wall right now as we speak.
As someone who currently shoots with the Nikon D850, I can say that 40+ mp is overkill most of the time. The best use I have for it is having the freedom to crop in on wildlife or sports subjects that have been shot at extreme zooms. It gives you more reach in a pinch. But it also is much more sensitive to camera movements, and even with good stabilized lenses I have to crank up the shutter speed more than I'm used to. So I'm leaning more towards the A7iii as a replacement for my 24mp D750, and then only because I need something that will shoot better video.
And what is ¨Large prints¨ ? i'm thinking of going to the a7iii from my a7rii, is 50x70 a big print? thats what my largest print are. Are they still going to look good with 24mp?
ive been using the a7riii for pretty much anything since i got it. Events, baseball games, portraits. It just kills it every time and still really clean at 12800 iso

I've just picked up the A7R III today and took it out for a test spin. The main selling point for me is the 42 megapixel sensor with no aa filter, the pixel shift and the price point.
Who need 42 megapixel? Almost nobody. Even with a old 6 mp camera, you can print big posters if you don’t crop. 24 mp is a very high resolution if the picture is sharp. And those three cameras god a fantastic af without front or back focus as you se with nikon and canon. Even the Sony/Zeiss lenses for those cameras, are razor sharp wide open. Not all Nikon or canon lenses are like that. Even the standard 28-70 kit zoom, is amazing sharp. I changed from Nikon. I shoot with the D4 and D800e and switched to the A9. First of all I don’t miss the 36 megapixel at all. I got more sharp images with my A9 then with any Nikon I ever used. It’s more important to me that the camera catch the focus, and the A9 do that for me every time. Before I switched system, I tried the D5 for a month and I found out that the A9 worked much better for me. I much tell that the A9 is the best digital camera I ever had. And I also shoot digital Hasselblad with 39 mp in the past. The A9 can do everything everywhere and just does it better than anything else. The camera is not as big as the D4/D5 and that means freedom to be creative. With the price of the A7III, you got a very flexible camera for almost no money. If you can’t make great shots with that, you are simply not a good photographer. You can do 98% of everything with that camera. If you shoot Canon, simply buy the Sigma MC11 and you can use all your canon EF lenses without problems. I got both a 85mm f:1,2L II and a sigma 24 f:1,4 ART for EF mount (I also shoot analog with a Canon EOS 1v), and both those glass work perfect on my A9.. even better than on Canon!
That depends entirely on what printer you use and the quality you want to get. If you are printing 300dpi 4x6s or 8x10s at Walmart, I agree your 6mp is fine. I can tell you with out a doubt my 50mp Canon 5DS looks much better at 1200dpi on my digital press than the same image cropped down to the 24mp equivalent. The increased sharpness, even on small size prints, is very visible.
cropping is very important for a lot of people, on a 40mp sensor you can crop down to 12mp and still have a good image, this means you can get the shot you want without wasting time changing lens, it would be amazing if in the future sensors are 100mp+ so you could just use a good quality wide prime lens and crop in for almost all images
I really don't get you people. Don't you ever print something bigger than 8x10 or shit like that. I have a few 80x60 cm and 40x30 cm prints from my Nikon D7100 and a 10 MP camera and the difference is pretty visible. I would love to have 40 MP.
I'd definitely go with the a7III for my shooting purposes. I do a lot of night shooting and could benefit from that ISO capability. Thanks for the review Jared!
I'm about to put 10k towards a A7 III. There's a few reasons why I chose that body to modify and by the time I'm done it will be a cinema camera. For video the A7 III, for photography the A7R III.
I have an A9 and am considering "downgrading" to the A7III simply because the A9 doesn't have slog. Which I don't understand?? I know the A9 is more of a photography camera, but it seems weird that a $4,500 professional camera doesn't have slog like even the way less capable sony cameras like the a6300. (still a great camera, but just not even remotely as good as the A9) Why did they not include slog? No idea. Will they add it? Probably not from what I've heard?
sLog is a video gamma curve for capturing flat images for color grading professionally. It works with the Cine color space and has more data than the standard REC709.
What if you downscale a 42MP image from A7R III into 24MP produced by A7 III. I think the noise is almost the same. Furthermore, there are software options that will reduce the noise better on higher resolution. With A7R III you receive the versatility to crop more and reuse your APS-C lenses and good enough quality (resolution). Also these days A7R III seems to be much cheaper than before.
I'm not an expert man, it's my first Full-frame, upgraded from the a6000. I shoot landscapes/cityscapes so I'm waiting on the Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 which is coming out the end of this month. The Zeiss 55mm seems amazing but doesn't suit my needs.
@@sleepyish.1 i found an a7iii in MPB for $700 and is definitely still a great camera. I would say get better high quality lenses. The lenses definitely make more of a difference
Honestly you can’t beat that price for the A7III. As far as value for money the A7III is the best camera on the market today. Maybe the best value for money, full frame, camera ever 😅. I’d choose the A7III and have that extra money for glass. The better features in the a9 just aren’t “that” much better than the a7III for me. The a7III will definitely get the job done. I’d also choose the A7III over the rIII for the 98% Af and the higher iso. Personally feel, and for the photography I do, that those two are more important than megapixels.
@@noahashton3252 Gh5 leans a bit more towards video imo. Id rather get the sony because its extremely close for video and is pretty good for pictures too.
@Arvid Kracht Well... No, the only advantage is not just the no recording limit. It has far better control over the rolling shutter, it has the flippy screen with a lot more touch functions, and at this point it can be had for less money and native lenses are generally quite a bit less expensive than Sony's. Don't get me wrong, I think the A7III is a ridiculously amazing camera for the money, but so is the GH5. They both do a lot of good things for the price.
Arvid Kracht I think people have a right to complain about the autofocus. It’s clearly not as good as the Sony. However, the RoninS can control the focus on the GH5. Not a bad trick, right? Like I said - amazing cameras for the money. I have both and I like them both very much.
I shoot with the a7iii, I get great images with prime lenses and meets all my portrait photography needs, and probably the easiest to get the images I’m looking for with little to no editing.
Thanks Jared, very fair. I switched from Canon (after 40 years) and went to Sony in January 2017 and have never looked back. No camera system is perfect. I find my A7RIII (upgraded from A7RII) and my A7III perform splendidly for both my professional and personal use. Adding an A9 would be super. And don't forget the great IBIS and great Eye-AF of each. Cheers
This was a great run down the line of the Sony full frame cameras Jared. Thank you for doing this and keeping it objective. I particularly enjoyed your real world reviews of the Sony a9 and a7R III.
APS-C crop is 18MP in the A7RIII vs 9MP in A7III, and you top that with the EVF and extra detail and it's a winner for Landscapes ! And your photo will be future proof for 8K monitors !
Thanks for the awesome and informative video! I just wish there was an overall check list at the end that shows all the info you just gave us in one visual. It would show off all the pros and cons to each camera without having to re-watch the video multiple times..
great video. i just got the a7III due to its all round capabilities. having great video and photo capabilities in one package is a winner for me. it eliminates the need for an A7SII for video and an A7RII for photo.
I went with the A7R3A simply because the price was down to $1999 and it shoots 42 mpixels. The video is pretty amazing too. The only bummer is I miss my Nikon lenses and there are no really good adapters that I know of.
Which Nikon did you have before? I just bought a z5 for $999 brand new but it seems no one likes to shoot with Nikon. Did I make a mistake to turn my hobby to a profession with a z5?
Sony A7iii is a ridiculous camera for that price point. Sony really nailed it with this one. I currently own a A7ii looking forward to upgrade to the A7iii.
Went with the a7iii and do not regret it. I just have to adjust the brightness of the screen to reflect the way it captures the images (have been a bit dark on some, flash is ok).
Thanks for the great comparison, Jared ! Thinking of upgrading from my 3.5 year old Sony A7II and looking at A7III and A7RIII, mainly as a travel camera and for landscapes, night street photography.
well, I already have the a6000, and the a7s, and I think I would like to get the a7RIII, the price on B& H Photo right now is about $2400.00, and about the same at K.E.H. and that's not too bad. I really don't do videos, I mainly do photos, and it's only in my spare time and I'm retired so it's just a hobby but I enjoy it. Maybe if I sold some of my old cameras I could save some money...lol
Planning on making the switch from Canon to Sony in the coming months. I want to make the transition slowly and use my current Canon lenses (gen 1 Canon 2.8 EF 16-35/24-70/70-200) until I can afford the switch to Sony glass. Which adapter would you recommend I go with?
I use a MC-11 and I find it works well with my favorite lenses - 50/1.2, 100/2.0, 24-70/2.8-II and 24-70/4. Having said that, focus starts to suffer with the slower/longer lenses when the light drops and can be frustrating at times. I eventually bought a Sony 85/1.8 to compliment my kit, and am pretty impressed with its sharpness and improved focus speed over the adapted Canon lenses. However, my old manual focus lenses have found a new lease on life, they work so well with the EVF. Eye follow focus, IBIS, and the EVF are awesome and worth every cent.
I bought a7III weeks ago and love it. I am former Canon and Nikon user so this camera is very dufferent. Now I want to build video setup so bought 55 f1.8 24-105 f4 G, gimbal crane plus, external monitor and cage.
Why didn't you compare with things in the same price range like the a7III and a6500. a6500 seems to be small and still good for travel and 1/2 price lenses. While a7III af is better, is FF, and has better UI and better battery. But what about degree? How does the a6500 with 18-105mm compare with a7III 24-105? Which one is still more convenient to carry around on the street or travel? Can you carry the a7III for 5 hrs straight? Is it that easy to pull out of a bag?
I will choose A9 -693 points of phase detectuon AF -High sensitivity up to 204800 ISO, similar to the A7s series -Anti Rolling shutter -Full frame 4K filming.
Bought the A7RIII, because it does it all. Love the crop mode for events, when you just need more mm without changing the lens and still getting 18mpix.
Benjamin Jehne that's one of the reasons I actually give the a7r3 a advantage for video and ohotos. The ability to do super 35 for video and crop mode for images. Those extra megapixels allow for the ability to get that extra reach with a prime lense for images and the super 35 look for video.
I’m a starter in photography and I don’t know what i’ll be shooting in the future but thinking mostly landscape, portraits and event videos. I thought the a7iii is good enough for me but now I’m considering the a7Riii because I don’t know if I’ll need the extra megapixels in the future. I’m afraid 24 mp will soon be too old as every camera is going to have higher mp. What do you guys think?
I bought the A7riii for inspection work on the bottom of a DJI Matrice 600 pro with a DJI ronin mx gimbal. Split between video and photo was the choice. Very disappointed in the controls via the Sony app though.
I have an A7 that's already an amazing camera, but every day I keep asking myself if I should buy an A7R III or A9... Photography is not my profession (yet) and I like to shoot portraits and dogs. For the dogs I lean towards the A9 bit for portraits the A7R III, really hard decision... I have the Sigma 20mm and 50mm both 1.4
Jared, please advise. I'm switching from Canon to Sony. I'm still photographer. I shoot everything. So potraits (studio and family/candid), travel, street, astro and lately birds/wildlife. I'm buying sigma mc-11 to use my EF Sigma glass and hopefully some Canon/Tamron. I wonder which would be better. Just Sony A7RIII for everything. For birds I would crop a lot so super 35 on 42mp is better in that case than A7iii. But for the same price I can buy A7III and A6400. So I can use APS-C for birds, it got better tracking that both A7iii and A7Riii. So I can have my Simga 150-600 all the time on the small body and use A7iii for other purposes (sometimes for birds also). I know that all 3 cameras work fine with MC-11 and sigma 150-600 (and other supported Sigmas). I wonder which package got the adventage. I know that with 2 bodies my footprint is bigger and I have to deal with 2 kind of batteries, and probably have to buy 2 Sigma MC-11. But then I got 2 cameras so I'm more flexible. With A7Riii I got smaller footprint, 1 battieries type to carry/care. I wonder if there is something I've missed that set one of the choices much better. BR,
Just bought A6400 to see how it's to use sony camera :). If this won't be enough for birds I would go for A7R3. If it would be sufficient I would buy A73 and have dual camera setup. So far, evf is different than ovf ;), focussing system is 10 times better than canon 200d. 9 focus points vs hundreds of them is no match. Also modes of AF are amazing. But I got only kit lens and it tends to miss focus (like 50% of shots). Camera is not supported yet in Darktable so I have to convert ARW files to DNG to be able to work with RAW format from a6400 (little pain in the ass). Waiting for Sigma MC-11.
Great video it helped me to decide which camera i am getting. As a landscape photographer a7Riii seems best options and is perfect cause I print most of my pictures, plus I do not shut in low light environment so limitations ISO does not affect me. Again, great video everything well explained
hey Jared one quick question. I own a 5Diii which I use for wildlife and sport with 70-200/300/400 2.8. My expectations was to move to 1DX ii, but in my country there is no Canon oficial representative, while yes for Sony. So A7iii cost less that in USA. Would I get at least same AF speed with A7iii and Metabone (5th gen) with my canon lenses compared to what I actually have with my 5D iii? thanks in advance!
Looking at these. Mostly nature photography, portrait and I want to get into long exposure star photography too. Thinking the RIII should cover it.. but what lenses and stuff do I need? I am upgrading from a Nikon P100.
Nice video and I've learned a lot about it. But I have something not clear, what's the best batteries live for video and for witch camera is best for professional video? Please help. Thanks
are there grip extenders for those of us with big hands?. the grips are small. i still haven't gotten used to the grip size of the A7R III that i have been shooting with.
I might lean towards the A7iii. I live in Iceland, the winters are very dark and long, good ISO capabilities is a must, here. Even though the summer is a 24 hours daylight, the weather is often bad, so not a lot of light. I think I'm going to try this camera. I'm a Canon user, I really like the color science and the vast selection of lenses at affordable prices, but it seems always behind the competition. Only way to find out is to grab some other brands, try them and see if they are worth for what I do.
I've been shooting with the A6500 and A6400 in tandem since the A6400 came out. I do like both cameras but, was hoping for a really spectacular improvement in the A6500 replacement such as a 1/8000 second shutter (so I can use f/1.4 lenses wide open in the bright sun), However, I was so underwhelmed with features of the A6600 that I purchased an A7iii to replace the A6500 (which I will be selling shortly)... Luckily, most of the Sony glass that I own (50mm f/1.8 OSS excepted) is full frame! future proofed myself that way... I will be shooting with he A7iii and A6400!
Sir please I am talking about only video shooting and nothing to do with image quality so in this case I just want to know that whether A7III shoots video in full 4k or in crop mode which is very confusing to me because i have seen many video some say cit shoots video with crop where as some say it is a full frame camera which shoots 4k without crop so please please let me be clear about so that I can choose which one to buy, if A7III shoots 4k without video without crop then Im going to buy it surely so please help me sir.

Great review and vidéo But still really don't know which one would be best to use for Wildlife with my Canon long lens ??? I ha a Canon 1D x that is getting to balky and heavy so I looking for a alternative without losing image details and quality ???

Best value at full price. I paid the same for both. Of course it was a year later for the A7RIII, after the A7RIV came out.

I'm about to put 10k towards a A7 III. There's a few reasons why I chose that body to modify and by the time I'm done it will be a cinema camera. For video the A7 III, for photography the A7R III.
once the A7Siii is out, you'll be changing your mind about using your A7III for videos.
@@KingAllpha321 Lol
Thanks from all deaf people for read out the spec sheets !
(still a great camera, but just not even remotely as good as the A9)
Why did they not include slog? No idea. Will they add it? Probably not from what I've heard?
What's Slog?
sLog is a video gamma curve for capturing flat images for color grading professionally. It works with the Cine color space and has more data than the standard REC709.
its all about marketing. sony want user to buy another body to gain double profit
Very late reply, but the a7iii's 'SLog' is a fake slog
@@davidglukh6473 Lol what do u mean. Please stop saying what u do not know as what u say Is not true
Thanks bro... I will definitely go with A7iii
A7III master race checking in
I just ordered mine. What lenses do you recommend for video and photography?
I'm not an expert man, it's my first Full-frame, upgraded from the a6000. I shoot landscapes/cityscapes so I'm waiting on the Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 which is coming out the end of this month. The Zeiss 55mm seems amazing but doesn't suit my needs.
Waiting for mine to come in the mail. Looking forward to doing some Astrophotography and video with it.
What lens did you use for astro on it?
Roozbeh I ordered in a Rokinon 14mm f/2.8.
ik im a little late, but now that the a9 is under $2000 is that a good deal, or are there better cameras for that budget
tell me if you found an answer, im trying to decide between the a9 and the a7iii
@@sleepyish.1 i found an a7iii in MPB for $700 and is definitely still a great camera. I would say get better high quality lenses. The lenses definitely make more of a difference
@@zacharykato2879 i was planning on getting an f4 70-200mm lens. i would use this setup for sports photography
John Chappe I agree
What do you think about the GH5 then? I think its a better bang for buck over the A7III
I shoot Auroras and Lightning ...... I want Ar7III with the higher megapixel. I also will do video so this will work for that too.
True, but it also burns an almost double as big hole in your pocket, which is a big factor for a lot of us :)
"Oh wow! What's your iso on this photo?"
"Oh it's just 204,800"
I choose A7iii and invest Best Lenses.. Cheaper price and for video purposes I might prefer this one... thumbs up for this review
it would have been nicer if you had added just few picture comparisons
Which one should I buy?
The sports action camera?
The high resolution?
Or the budget model?
The answer is really in the question
The A7III also shoots in silent. I use it all the time.
You forgotten to mention Product Photography ! I think, the A7RIII would be the winner.
I was thinking the same, product is my style and the higher quality would definitely be important
Are you sure? not a9? what about the price? i see they are different price and same product?
alseinis this is because businesses use billboards and large prints, so the a7riii is better in this case because of the higher resolution
What kind of camera you was taken behind the scene
Sony A7iii is a ridiculous camera for that price point. Sony really nailed it with this one. I currently own a A7ii looking forward to upgrade to the A7iii.
Same here ! :)
Thinking of the A7 III for astrophotography. Good idea?
Dude your reviews are the best.
Went with the a7iii and do not regret it. I just have to adjust the brightness of the screen to reflect the way it captures the images (have been a bit dark on some, flash is ok).
Great rundown. I’m picking up an a7iii soon. Very excited to give it a run around the parks of Chicago.
Thanks for the great comparison, Jared ! Thinking of upgrading from my 3.5 year old Sony A7II and looking at A7III and A7RIII, mainly as a travel camera and for landscapes, night street photography.
The a9 weather proofing is an important consideration
Love your detailed videos man! Can't get enough of them!
Thanks for the review. A7iii. I have been trying to make up my mind for a while now. Now I know it’s is the A7iii for the low light capabilities
The AF of the a9 is better because it does 60 calculations per second. You missed this one, but it's a very significant advantage over the a7iii's AF
Jared could make a video comparing toilet covers and I'd still want to watch it.
well, I already have the a6000, and the a7s, and I think I would like to get the a7RIII, the price on B& H Photo right now is about $2400.00, and about the same at K.E.H. and that's not too bad. I really don't do videos, I mainly do photos, and it's only in my spare time and I'm retired so it's just a hobby but I enjoy it. Maybe if I sold some of my old cameras I could save some money...lol
Went for the A7iii I've been happy with the built quality and overall ease of use. Now to upgrade to a better lense preferably the Sony 24-105mm.
I know I can always count on you for these really useful comparisons, Thank You!
If shooting landscape . Pixels matter.. speed, etc not so much
This was soooo helpful Jared! Thanks. Im going wit A7iii upgrading. To full frame on budget.
I bought a7III weeks ago and love it. I am former Canon and Nikon user so this camera is very dufferent. Now I want to build video setup so bought 55 f1.8 24-105 f4 G, gimbal crane plus, external monitor and cage.
Can u suggest a lens for a7 iii for a beginner
Por favor
Very helpful comparative review and informative! Thank you so much Jared!
Thank you sir. Saved a lot of time to browse through other videos out there.
I will choose A9
-693 points of phase detectuon AF
-High sensitivity up to 204800 ISO, similar to the A7s series
-Anti Rolling shutter
-Full frame 4K filming.
Same here !
good point
Same broski
how is it good with out a a tripod under low light situations?
I’m a starter in photography and I don’t know what i’ll be shooting in the future but thinking mostly landscape, portraits and event videos. I thought the a7iii is good enough for me but now I’m considering the a7Riii because I don’t know if I’ll need the extra megapixels in the future. I’m afraid 24 mp will soon be too old as every camera is going to have higher mp. What do you guys think?
라사 A lot of pros made big prints with 16mp or less in the past
Great work as always. Super informative
I bought the A7riii for inspection work on the bottom of a DJI Matrice 600 pro with a DJI ronin mx gimbal. Split between video and photo was the choice. Very disappointed in the controls via the Sony app though.
Thanks great video, what shampoo are you using :)
Would I get at least same AF speed with A7iii and Metabone (5th gen) with my canon lenses compared to what I actually have with my 5D iii? thanks in advance!
ok for primarily shooting video, which one is best? Thanks!
Great information Jered thank you. I am looking to get the A7iii for my wife as she is a beginner. Thank you
Brother what kind of Cannon zoom lens do you use in sports
The A7III also has 425 contrast detection points. You skip that in several of your videos.
Looking at these. Mostly nature photography, portrait and I want to get into long exposure star photography too. Thinking the RIII should cover it.. but what lenses and stuff do I need? I am upgrading from a Nikon P100.
you Don't need blazing fast autofocus for that. Nikon D850 is the best for that. Best image quality, steady and affordable lenses.
everything I wanted to know in one vid! amazing as always, where the hell was the sniff test?

are there grip extenders for those of us with big hands?. the grips are small. i still haven't gotten used to the grip size of the A7R III that i have been shooting with.
If you watched the video you’d know
I might lean towards the A7iii.
Very good work 👌👌👌🏅
I've been shooting with the A6500 and A6400 in tandem since the A6400 came out.
A7iii beats the heck out of Canon and Nikon, best 2k camera ever in the history of camera
Amazing review! Many thanks! I’m going with the iii for two reasons: price and low ISO.
