- When Gylfie the barn owl seemed to lose interest in her chicks, I grew concerned. These were her second brood of owlets and they were just six weeks old.

ABOUT THIS FILM
____________________
Barn owls protected
Barn owls are a protected species and so at first I had to step back and let nature take its course. Late broods can be successful, but are vulnerable to bad weather.
Time to intervene
But when after days of rain, the youngest barn owlet perished, I attempted to rescue the surviving two.
Clean up
I cut short a filming trip to bring the owlets indoors and immediately set about cleaning the birds. Their legs and feathers were clogged with dried droppings and prey remains. Although I didn't want to add to their stress, I also didn't want infection to set in - already one chick's feet were swollen. Once they were clean, I wrapped them in a towel and placed them in a box in my boiler room to dry off.
Hungry
By morning they had begun hissing for food. They were clearly very thin, their breastbones poking through like blades, and needed nourishment fast.
Tragic end
But despite seeming to react well to my care, within a few days the youngest barn owlet died and the older one began to look unwell. I took her to the vet but sadly she also died, of gastroenteritis and pneumonia.
We did all we could for the owlets, but nature can be cruel at times. Let's hope for a better season for barn owls Finn and Gylfie next year.
Gylfie & Finn
I don't know why Gylfie gave up on her chicks, but I suspect she was tired after having already raised one clutch earlier this summer.

Thank you for all the effort to save these precious little lives. I know we should let nature take its course, but there's fewer and fewer wild animals left on Earth :(
♥️🪶
Do I believe that just letting nature take it's course is just life and how harsh it can be? Yes I do, but with that said just attempting to TRY is better than doing nothing at all.
Nature rarely gets to take “her” course anymore. LOL
Thank you so much, Robert!
Comparing historic populations to today's populations will really change how "take its course" feels.
Our great grandparents lived in a world with 3 to 8 times as many animals in the world...
Lots of extinction is happening in a short amount of time...
I have no words. My heart is broken. Thanks for your work and the video, REF.
Sorry it's not better news, thank you for your support Dagmar.
@@RobertEFuller Thank you for your answer. I cannot stop crying. I think you are similarly sad. We had so much hope ...
Such a tragedy. 😢 It's at least comforting that they passed in a warm, safe environment, surrounded by people doing everything possible to save them. Rest well, little ones. 😞
You are though such a heartful, amazing hero!! If anything, they died in a warm, loving company. Indeed, nature is cruel sometimes. I hope they rest in peace, wonderful birds they were!
Aw sweet babies. That's the way nature happens. You gave them the best shot at survival.
This is sad to see how Gilfie loses her interest, and sad for You, after so good provide for these two chicks. The world is cruel, especially to animals. Thank You for taking so good care of all the animals around your house, I am sure they like it there.🌷🌱🌿
Finn did a wonderful job trying to provide as much food as possible. Hopefully with the Beech nest box redesigned will help prevent a repeat.
What happened to finn
@@pepperg4335 nothing happened to him-
just him and gylfie could not stay in the nest anymore
These pictures show very well how fast birds get dirty if they are not able to clean their feathers.
Rest In Peace G1, G2, G3, G4, G5
We never had the opportunity to name you.
May those beautiful Barns Rest In Peace.
Thankyou robert, for cutting your trip short and trying to save the chicks, I'm heart broken. You are amazing 💔😢
I grew up on a farm and you learn early on that sometimes despite our best efforts some little ones just don't make it. However I don't think it ever becomes easy to lose them. They were fortunate to have you there to give them their best shot.
What a good daddy for all of the babies. Thank you for all of your efforts😊
The description says that he suspects that Gylfie was already tired from raising her first clutch of chick earlier this summer. I also believe that she was super stressed out, in her other nest she could occasionally walk around & stretch her legs, in this one it was impossible. Finn is also a very affectionate Owl who loves being next to Gylfie & the chicks, you can tell that Gylfie enjoys having Finn by her side. But that little nest was far too small for all of them to be there so I guess the moment she saw they were getting even bigger, she said " I need to get out of here"
Didnt usually nest was chosen by the female owl so Glyfie was the one deciding to have clutch in that nest?
@@iinsalim4700 I think males scout potential nests and females pick.
Kinda like human society then. Males go searching for homes they can afford and the women pick the home the guy has to buy lol
@@BrutusAlbion & it makes sense because Finn is a Young Barn Owl & a First time Dad,
Just like his mating technique, defending his territory, & feeding his wife/chicks he's gonna have to learn from his mistakes since he's new to all of this 🌱🦉 Since he doesn't have experience I bet he just went with whatever felt right
@@Brutusthecreatorofficial4862 Ah putting all the blame squarely on the hard working dad but not on the child abandoning mother? Classic feminist move.
(just kidding lol, nature can be cruel, lets hope Finn finds a better home for his next clutch of cute little owlets he and Gylfie can raise together.)
@@BrutusAlbion hallo
My heart was heavy watching you lovingly care for these chicks!!!💖😢
I cannot watch the video as my heart is already broken. REF thanks for all you do for our furry and feathered friends. Sincerely….
The end is heartbreaking but at least they didn't die in that wet hole covered in mud and debris, thanks to your efforts. They were in a dry and warm environment in the end.
This broke my heart poor tiny owlies great job your care is amazing Robert Thankyou
Yes very sad I was away in Scotland filming and came back a day early but it was too late unfortunately 😕
Thank you for your tireless dedication to these beautiful animals. ❤️
Oh how sad. Glad you tried to help the little ones.
Just heartbreaking
:(
@@craigbarton6519 Morning to the Barton nest, it is marrer but we have 3 gorgeous wowlets
Thank you for trying your best to save them, you made sure they felt warm and safe during the last days of their lives. You gave them comfort and love before they passed, and that was incredibly kind of you.
Poor little ones,The weather can be awful this time of year, especially trying for late broods.Poor Finn the dad was heroic in feeding them, but he had no control over this. Fly high little ones.😪
😥😔--yes fly high little ones.....
I noticed lately only Finn did prey deliveries to the chicks in contrast with Ghost/Willow deliveries to their chicks. But I nvr thought that it means Glyfie totally lost interest on them. RiP dearest owlets 🥺🥺🥺
Poor Gylfie, she was such a good mother to all her past clutches with Finn and Barney, why would she give up on this one?
She always gets a bit tired when she second broods and this one was later than normal and she gave up sooner unfortunately
I feel so bad,but thanks for your help
This episode has really awakened my conscience, sometimes as humans when things are difficult to hit in life, humans often give up and give up, even though we have a fairly comfortable house, it doesn't rain when we sleep but only because of difficult life problems often despair hits, some of us decide to commit suicide or hurt ourselves, while there are many birds and other animals that struggle just because of bad weather and predators. This video led me to wake up calling how appreciating the life we have is a necessity, has given us is a great choice, and finding a way out of all life's difficulties is the path to light. Thank you Robert for filming all those natural episodes, because it makes our hearts warm and uplifting ,send our warm regard to your wife :)
Tried your best like your own babies bt Destiny plays its role... Sometimes its really difficult. Keep on rescuing 👍.. Thankyou sooo much 🌟
Thank you for rescuing them.
Aaww...what a shame.Thank you for trying to help them😔
Good effort, Robert. Condolences.
So very sad. I watched this unfolding as it was happening and was just praying everything would turn out all right. Nature can be cruel sometimes. Robert Fuller is a true hero and did everything possible to save these precious babies. We can hope and pray for a better spring next year fir Gylfie and Finn♥ It makes you wonder how many clutches are actually lost every year in wild that don't receive any assistance at all. Thank you for everything you do REF♥
Thank you for your continued support.
You did your best mate but it still didn’t stop a few tears forming.
I can relate to this, I helped a herring gull juvenile with a broken wing and took him to an animal rescue place called Holly Trees.
Sadly after the bird had recovered he got eaten by a fox 😢
But at least nature had her way and the young gull didn’t die by getting hit by a car or killed by a pesky cat!!
You’re a good man Robert 👍🏻
Robert, your dedication and commitment to these, as well as all the creatures that come into your sphere, are blessed🤲 with another soul who cares about them.
No doubt we can't save them all, as someone else🙏... has that decision to make, but your efforts are never without cause, for their concern, and in providing a return for their best outcome, ultimately. GOD BLESS YOU 😇 It takes a strong heart... and humble person in this work you do! You're deeply cared for, Sir... know that 🤗🥰💞
Thank you what wonderful owls
Darling babes, thank you for caring for the chicks and offering them comfort in the last hours of their short lives.
My heart is broken :( thank you Robert for trying your best
Thank you so much for trying to help the owlets, REF.
Made me cry. So emotionally vested. Got to step away for a while
What a pity. Thank you for showing the true reality of nature and not sugar coating it - I think this is really important. Nature can be cruel but it's also impossible for everything to survive.
I agree with you Gwen.
What a heart-breaking video, but thank you so much dear REF for all your efforts. It's a hard world out there for all of our wild creatures.
You made them warm and dry even if the outcome is Heartbreaking.
This is sad news, but You did everything You could! Thank You for taking care of wildlife! You are an example for all of us.
Agree Devi, indeed Robert is an amazing example how taking care of wildlife 👍
@@claudiam1026 yes, Mr. Fuller teaches us how to take care of fragile nature and these lessons are priceless.
@@Vespasiel so true
You gave them a chance to survive.
Robert, that is tragic news. Thank you for your attempt to save the remaining little ones. Human activities have impacted our companion species most adversely, so it's heartening that folks like you try to assist in their survival and well-being.
I'm sorry for your loss. May the chicks rest in peace. 💔
Thank you for all you do❤️🇨🇦❤️
Thanks just don’t win every time though
So weak they cant even put up a fight. Your an amazing person ty for trying to help them.
Nature can be very cruel at times.
So sad for the little Gs, thank you very much for all the efforts!
I don’t know whether to like or dislike the video. So sad. 😢. You tried your best
Mr. Fuller, Thank-you for all you do!! I Admire People such as yourself who care & love wildlife & Thank- you for sharing it with me & all the other people who Appreciate this type of content.
Thank you so much for trying so hard.
This is very sad, but there is a honesty about it. There is no lie in nature. Many thanks to Robert and all who assisted in trying to save these beautiful creatures.
So sad. Thanks for all your efforts.
You did your best. So sad that they died. Thank you for your care.
That’s so sad but I have so much respect for you for trying to help. Rest in peace babies
So very sad. Someone on the live feed said that the chicks had something wrong with their digestion & that they couldn’t get enough nourishment no matter how much they ate, is that true? I didn’t realise that it was neglect. Naively, I felt almost proud to see Finn be such a great father for his brood, that will teach me to anthropomorphise! Thank you for your efforts Mr. F, it must’ve been tough on you. Be well 🌹
You did everything you possibly could to help save the owlets Robert, as you always do, but unfortunately on this occasion it was not to be. The local barn owl population continues to benefit from your hard work and expertise and I for one really appreciate everything that you do.
Thanks 😊 just sad that we lost all 5 owlets on this occasion 🙁 got to remember 20 years ago there were no barn owls round here so there is a lot to celebrate still
Bless you and your wonderful team Robert. Take comfort in knowing the owlets didn’t pass cold and hungry.
Thank you for your effort to help those owlet... They fledged straight to heaven...
I am sooo sorry to hear this news! Such beautiful precious owlettes. These sad times are do difficult. And ya nature is brutal. In many ways. RIP SWEET BABIES. 💞
Thank you for showing this side of life. Many people fail to realise that wild nature “is not Disney movie”, so it is important to make people aware that death, disease and injury, loss and decay are just a part of life.
I so agree.
Thankfully Robert only intervens only when nessary.
Thanks for trying Robert
Those were such beautiful days watching willows owlies and gylphy's owlies growing together , never thought that it would end up like this , even if I know you tried your best ref but still somewhere deep in my heart I can't believe they are dead , they brought so much happiness and excitement when they were born , but they could not make it till the end to see the beautiful world outside where we live 😭😭
This is very unfortunate and surprising to see Gylfie lost interest.
RIP cute owlets. 😞
👍😍good Luck baby ! You are with an gardian Angel !!!! Robert you are the best !!!! 😘
😢 Rest in peace little ones. ❤️❤️
I saved a bunch of abandoned ducklings when I was young. Out of a dozen, I managed to get about 8 to adult size who stayed on our farm. It was sad to lose the runt. I was really rooting for him and I did my best.
So sad! Thank you for all your efforts in helping the barn owl chicks!
I’m so sorry for losing those sweet owlets. You were such a great owl foster dad.
Thankyou so much for letting us see the owlets on Sunday, so sorry they didn't make it You did your absolute best for them, Robert.
A Huge Thankyou to You , Mrs Fuller and the rest of the Team.
Sad to see that all the chicks never made it.
Thank goodness for the likes of you who look out for our wildlife in the UK
RIP three baby chicks 😢
So sorry to hear this. 😟💔 It's one of the fascinating things about nature though, both the light and the dark sides. Thank you for sharing all of it with us.
I always save animals when i can, no Matter how small they are. I once took a little insect out of a puddle, fighting for its life and a friend Said i should leave it its nature. I replied, it is also nature that me as a concscious being with two Hands Sees an animal in distress and can save its life.
Thank you, Robert for what you did for these chicks. Nature is not kind. Much appreciate Robert’s videos, giving us a glimpse of the wild lives.
Very sad! Thank you for helping them Robert! 🙏💕
This made me so incredibly sad. But I know this is what happens sometimes, and I'm glad that you could give them a decent place to stay in their last days. ❤️
Poor darlings. You did your absolute best REF!
NOOOOOOOO, R.I.P for those barn owls
Oh man sorry that's tough if you love animals it's tuff on anyone. Thank you for sharing the video and you are an awesome owl keeper and nature is tuff but you did what you could.
nature can be cruel for these young little chicks. But such is life. Finn and Glyfie tried for their 2nd brood but the weather did not cooperate. It's really sad to lose all the chicks, it is indeed survival of the fittest. Thank you for your hardwork and dedication to save these chicks' lives. Finn once again proved that he is a capable and loving mate. I hope they would finally thrive for their next brood
Finn and Gylfie now have 4 eggs so we are hoping for new chicks very soon. You can watch them on my live stream - ua-cam.com/video/NYkUySSjJog/v-deo.html
😥 so sad....im new to bird watching, it all started after i began leaving fooe for crows, now im a huge fan of all birds!
Thank you for letting us know what happened, and giving these chicks the best shot possible. Hope you take care of yourself!
I am so sorry for them, nature isn't fair sometimes and its sad that such precious innocent creatures have to suffer sometimes
Life unfortunately
Rest in peace little wise ones. Love love love to you over the rainbow bridge.
What you did for them was beautiful and so loving. I am enthralled watching your videos and I am looking forward to visiting your gallery soon and to see your live cams. You are doing such blessed work. Your efforts of care and rewilding, of conservation and raising awareness are so Divine and beautiful. Sending blessings to you Robert. Thanks so much 😁 maybe see you at the gallery
So sad. Thank you for all your efforts.
Nature does what it must.
You did everything you could, thank you for the dedication you gave to these owls.😭😭
sad but I'm glad you shared this tory
I am so sad. 😔🦉🦉
I know you tried your best.
But it's like you said nature can be a cruel individual. 🦉
I know there is a place in heaven for those little guys. 😔🦉🦉
I also like to thank you Robert.
For all the hard work that you do. You are a special breed of person.
You show compassion.
Love and care for all types of critters 👍
Thank you for all your efforts 😔👍👍😥
You do so much. I am glad you are trying to preserve the last of Finn.
Thank you for your effort to try and save them. Letting nature take its course is hard.
You did your best. Sometimes Mother Nature needs a hand.
This is so sad, I was really hoping they'd be able to recover... :,( At least they were more comfortable in their last days...
You are such an amazing human! Thank the Lord for people like you helping these sweet young birds
What made the parents stop helping their little babies ? I’m only on UA-cam. Thanks so much for taking such good care of the two last ones, they were warm and clean. Poor little things 😔
RIP, little barn owls : (
A very sad ending, but at least they were helped you can only do so much....
Poor things. Had a small group of Muscovy ducks I and the local community feed and cared for til new management of a nonprofit poisoned them.
How horrible 😢
