ABOUT THIS FILM

Ready to nest
There are plenty of bird boxes around my Yorkshire home, but the obvious choice for this barn owl pair is Elm Stump box. Gylfie has raised four successive broods here and knows it well. So by January they were scraping out a hollow ready for their eggs.
Checking out the competition
After spending some time getting this nest ready for the season, Gylfie suddenly decided to tour other available nests.
Sycamore stump
Her first stop was Sycamore Stump. Gylfie nested here with a previous mate, Barney, back in 2019. But this year this owl box is occupied by another barn owl pair, Willow & Ghost.
Ash stump
Another option is Ash Stump and Gylfie & Finn relocate here for a while, scraping out more hollows and even snoozing in it during the day. But they don't keep a close enough watch, so kestrel pair Mr & Mrs Kes move in.
Beech stump
The barn owls move on to Beech Stump. They had five chicks here last Autumn which sadly perished due to bad weather and lack of food. In case they choose this box this season, I decide to renovate it, making it wider and more comfortable.
Nest box wars
But as soon as it's ready tawny owls Bomber and his mate Luna move in. If Gylfie wants it she will have to fight the much larger species for it.
Owls clash
This doesn't defer Gyflie, and there's a ferocious flurry of feathers and talons. The tawny owls have nested at Beech Stump for the past two years, (they are early nesters and had already left by the time Gylfie & Finn moved in last year) and are not going to give it up without a fight.
Owls fight
The tawny owl pair attack Gylfie & Finn, who retreat back to Elm Stump.
Season begins
After two months of searching for the perfect nest, with the tawny owls still in Beech, Gylfie's decision is made for her. Elm Stump is the only option left.
Courtship
Now the nest is decided, it's time to start a family. The two barn owls are inseparable, and Finn rarely leaves Gylfie’s side.
Gylfie lays first egg
At the start of May, Gylfie begins contractions. Finn looks on, concerned, but then falls asleep and misses the moment the first egg is laid.
Curious male
Finn has been a father before, but he's still curious about it all. As Gylfie goes on to lay three more eggs, he can't stares at each in wonder and even tries to incubate.
Incubation
Unlike most birds of prey, barn owl eggs are incubated as soon as they’re laid. This means Gylfie is almost entirely reliant on her barn owl mate Finn to support her. Thankfully he is very attentive and brings regular food deliveries.
Barn owl eggs
Barn owls lay eggs with 2-3 day intervals and Gylfie lays like clockwork until the clutch is complete.

I love and miss Finn greatly. Rest peacefully, dear Finn, and fly high ❤️
For those that remember Barny Gylfies first mate he was the most amazing Owl ever and then Finn came along he was definitely the most amazing and amusing owl literally ever ! He will be greatly missed by so many people Hopefully dryer can be a good match for Gylfie
@@RobertEFuller She seems to know how to pick them.
@@RobertEFuller So that means Gylfie is much older than the rest of the owls.. Is it natural for female barn owls like Gylfie to live longer than the male counterparts?
Can’t believe it’s been about a year since they started a new family, miss you Finn, everybody is doing great, rest easy
I’m new to watching Robert’s beautiful videos - what happened to Finn?!? 😢
@@adventuresofbct8612 He died after drowning in a water trough designed for livestock last autumn 😢
Oh no, that breaks my heart 😢😔 Poor Finn…he was the sweetest. 💔 I so appreciate you taking the time to let me know, so thank you for replying to my comment
Yeah, Finn would be proud of his family!
@@adventuresofbct8612 NOOOOOOOO, now I’m crying. Poor baby. Rip Finn. 😢
These two were the old guard of the woods. I always loved how Finn seemed to think himself everyone's uncle, checking on the eggs of his neighbors but rarely ever taking aggression against anyone. ♡♡♡♡♡
Oh those "Daddy's" Need to Know 😮 But Also investigate 😅
These beautiful owls are amazing!🥀🐆
I can't believe he did that!

I miss Finn and his ceaseless fascination with eggs.
Finn standing beside her as she lays her first eggs is so precious.
He was a very attentive mate.
The way Finn looked at his bride when she was in labor was beyond beautiful. My heart just grew bigger watching them💖💖💖😘
The exact same thing I was thinking!!! 🥰😍🤩
This makes me cry. I am so happy to have found your channel, Robert Fuller!🪶🥰
I never noticed how beautiful barn owls are up close. Because, I’ve never seen a barn owl up close like in your videos @RobertFuller
The spots and rings on their feathers are so pretty.
House hunting is more intense than I remember it being
Oh I do miss Finn, I was devastated when he died.
Me too. He was a truly wonderful little soul, and I still think about him. I wish we could have gotten more time with him.
The loveliest image capture of Finn & Gylfie. Happy memories of Finn brings tears to my eyes. If there is an owl heaven, he is flying about it with a soft white halo
Saddened to hear about Finn , the chemistry between him and his mate was a joy to watch, I can’t believe he drowned, he was such an amazing dad and mate.
Awwww the way Finn looks at her when she’s about to lay the first egg. How sweet! Rest easy Finn.
Oh I do miss my favourite boy Finn. Thank you Robert for giving us the wonderful insight to the world of owls.🦉🦉 Fly high Finn your entire owl family misses you xx
Finn was my absolute favorite goofball with his antics and curiosity. I miss him so, but I'm also looking forward to seeing the next of Gylfie's brood. She has such excellent taste in gents!!
Finn was amazing owl to watch full of character all owls are different let’s hope Dryer is a good match for Gylfie

We really miss you Finn~!

Sometimes I sure hope there is such a thing as Owl Heaven, like in Guardians of Ga'Hoole. And Finn and all the lovely owls from these videos are flying through the aurora borealis, and looking at their offspring thriving forever. 😅
This comment made me tear up. Our wonderful Finn and all the other sweet owls we have love and lost… I like your thought of them flying through the aurora. Sleep well, dear Finn, and fly high ❤️
May he rest in Owlhalla forever where the mice and voles never end.
Oh Finn, you were such a good hooty-boy! We miss you so, even as we root for Dryer and Gylfie now.
So true so well said!
So miss Finn, it hurts to watch.

Owl UA-cam vloggers! Love it lol
When an owl passes, it takes a final flight. It swoops above the trees, on a moon lit night. And it comes to a tree of purest silver birch, and there it takes a rest on its final perch
RIP Finn you will be missed Gentle Goober.

Always love this cute couple.
miss you……Finn
Finn really seems fascinated with eggs, it's so cute!
"My babies?"
Awwww, darling Finn. I miss him. He was special. Such a wonderful, loving character!
Brings back great memories watching these back in the day
Have you ever thought of having one long movie of all the birds of when they fight, feed, meet, and why in time order? It would be fascinating to see. Great work as always!
Yes, it's always interesting to see how the birds interact with each other, particularly early on in the breeding season. May be an idea for a future film!
@@RobertEFuller It's always cool to me to see protagonists from other videos make appearances in their neighbors' stories, like when Finn (and later Gylfie) poke at Luna's eggs without doing anything. Or how Mrs. Kes' anxiety stemmed from Luna's efforts as a foster mother paying off.
I really love the barn owls relationship! They really show love to one another ! It’s romantic
Hi 👋 Barn owls at there best 🥰
Some say animals don’t have complex emotions well I think 🤔 my videos so they do especially these two love birds 😆
Thank you so much
Robert for this great film. I‘m very touched by this pair of owls. I will always miss Finn, he was so loving 🥰
It's been a pleasure watching these 2.
Finn was the best dad ever ❤
Finn was always my favorite; I'm going to miss him!
It's so adorable how Finn tap the eggs lol and its so cute that he stayed by her side through the delivery
Ah Finn-Finn-Finegan! I do miss him because he was such a unique character beyond what we see from "normal" owl behaviour. I hope Dryer turns out to be a good provider & good father, as Gylfie goes "claws off" once the chicks can self-feed - Finn was a hunting machine dad!😍😇🐭🐁🐀
Good morning. It's 7:15 in Seattle, and what a great vid to start the day.
Thank you, Robert, for all of the hours of filming, editing, keeping the nest boxes up to date, and so much more... all to share these amazing videos with the World.

The allopreening is my favorite part. U know it releases oxytocin in their brain and feels good to them.
I am new to this site and hate to hear something happened to one of these beautiful creatures. It saddens my heart. But at the same time happy to all the owlets who grow so strong.
