    Read the book Wesley the Owl. It's about a researcher who takes an injured baby owl home (reluctantly) and it becomes imprinted on her. Some of the things Wesley does is cute like trying to brush his teeth and wash his face, are cute but others would be horrifying for the typical pet owner. It is a heartwarming story but realistic as well.

    Here in the UK one of the suspected reasons we now have Eurasian Eagle Owls in the wild is because people who had seen Harry Potter and wanted an owl for themselves brought them over and when they got too big (and start to chase around the pet dog) they opened the door and let them leave.

      Exactly what will happen if someone tries to take an owl as a pet. Should be illegal everywhere.

    • @eggy-potter
      @eggy-potter 3 роки тому +34

      @@eagles_s I don’t exactly agree with that. I believe that you can have an owl but only if you’re qualified in falconry. Many birds of prey (owls especially) can live happily in captivity and on top of that will live a longer life then what they would in the wild since in captivity they are never going hungry, have access to healthcare and don’t have any predators. I just think at the end of the day anyone who wants to look after an owl (or a bird of prey) should have the proper qualifications and abilities to respect these powerful birds. And on top of that it should also be a breeders mission to make sure these birds are going to the right people.

    • @eagles_s
      @eagles_s 3 роки тому +7

      @@eggy-potter Ill clarify, nobody should be allowed to have an owl as a housepet. Its an Apex predator, would you keep a Lion or a Black Bear? Its natural instincts are to hunt and fly, not perch on ones shoulder. Falconry is not having a raptor as a pet, its using Raptors for educational and conservation purposes. In terms of life span though, one barn owl in the wild for 4 years can produce another 40, as compared to one in captivity for 20 that may produce none.

    • @jasonberryman1035

      @@eagles_s personally I think there are some people who have the ability to properly care for and provide enrichment for an owl while keeping them privately. That’s why I believe instead of outright banning certain animals there should be permits and standards of care enforced. I imagine you’ll disagree and I personally have no interest in caring for such powerful and prey driven birds but that’s just my two cents.

    When I was 7/8yrs old a Screech owl (we think) flew into my dad's truck window when he parked. KO'd. He brought it home in a bird cage (no idea where he got the cage). it would watch TV with us and we fed it chicken and ham. We kept it for a week or so to make sure it was ok. Never was rattled or scared. He took it back to where he was when it konked itself.

    If you live out in “owl county” and you’re interested in owls the best thing to do IMHO would be to buy an owl house from a reputable hardware store that can be set up in your own back yard nailed to a tree, It’s the same principle as a bird house just bigger. Do be prepared for bones and bits of dead animals by your owl house though, They are hunters after all and can leave something of a mess when they find a meal and will feed baby owls in their nest.

They're easier to handle than other birds of prey, but they're still birds of prey and need to be treated with the same respect. Additionally, size seems to matter a lot just like with other birds.

    There was a huge great horned owl that lived in a fur tree near my parents' backyard in the winter. I named him George. A lot of times when I'd go on the back patio as a kid to smoke at night I'd hear him vocalizing, and I'd talk back to him. He'd talk back. On nights where I didn't immediately encounter him I'd call him, and within several seconds he'd divebomb my head to say hello. He never scratched me. He'd just get close enough to make my hair move. I never heard him until he was right over my head because of how their feathers zip together. George was a wonderful, beautiful, friendly creature. It's a special kind of feeling becoming friends with a wild animal.

    We have a Burrow Owl that's been hanging around at my work the past week. He or She (not sure how to tell) is pretty chill and lets us get pretty close (about 10ft) to just sit there, admire it, and take a couple of pictures. We dont try to disturb it. For most of us, it's been our first encounter with an owl.
    When we first saw it, I had called a wildlife rescue because I thought it was a baby that fell out of a nest or something. They asked me one well worded question and basically identified instantly from that. They said it may hang around for a couple of days or a couple of weeks until its ready to move on. It's really cool that it's still here. Beautiful creature to look at and the reason I'm watching this video. 😉

I suspect the fact that I went to several educational programs as a kid and observed their behavior firsthand had something to do with that. I’m in Canada and would loveeeeee to own an owl id be the best owl daddy ever . But it’s illegal. I wish one would like find me and ask me for help and I’d step up and give the bird the world. They’re so gorgeous unbelievably amazing looking animals and the hooting they make is so relaxing and calming.

    I'm glad to have watched this video. Not because of the movies, but I've seen a lot of youtube videos of owl keepers that made the owls seem like sweet little cuddle buddies that do funny things. Back then, it made me want to own one. Good thing I have done extra research and came upon this video to find out that owls are better off being observed by educators such as this woman :), and in the wild itself. I care enough to let the idea of owning one go. I hope all other people would get this message and change their minds too

    It only took me one internet search to dispel my thoughts of getting an owl as a pet. Along with the ones listed in this video, there are several more really important reasons why they do not make good pets and I wish everyone did that one internet search to find out. Thanks for the video.

    It makes me wonder if there's some single species of owl that could be captive bred over X generations to become kinda like our large herps, and help fund conservation - somewhat like Tom Crutchfield says, "Conservation through commercialization." I mean, we risk a lot of the same stuff with herps that birds of prey keepers do, though it seems BOPs are much more unpredictable. Just a thought, I know very little about owls other than they are cool and that little one was adorable lol.

    I found a nestling western screech owl on my property 2 days ago. I see the hole it came out of. There has been no sign of the parents. It was on the ground for at least 2 days I know of, today I brought it inside and fed it some bugs I caught, tomoro I’ll go get it some mealworms and pinky mice. I gotta try to save the little guy, I’m not looking for a pet, maybe like a wild and free but friendly tenant for the barn…

    In my neighborhood there was a western screech owl who let me walk up to him within 1 foot and take a bunch of pictures. Looked me right in the eye the whole time. Didn't even move until my kids came running up.
