In the winter I like going to hardware stores just to look at and read all the different lawn products. It helps relieve my urge and desire to work in the lawn.
I narrowed it down to Speed Zone and Tenacity mixed together for my Chicago lawn. It fights Creeping Charlie and Thistle and various stuff. And Wead Beater Ultra works great for spot spraying Dandelions.
I'm a new, first time homeowner. Thank God I found your channel! My lawn has become my new challenge/project. I put down pre-emergent. I have a fescue& blue grass mixed lawn. I also have crocuses and snowdrops popping up! WTH they came from, I don't know! How do I kill off without killing the grass?
Dude I learned how strong prodiamine is this year.. measured out my lawn, did the math like our man here urges, and WHOA I need put to like a few table spoons worth for my entire front yard. Damn strong stuff. -read the label -measure your lawn -do your math -throw'er down -enjoy the mow.
I have a palmetto and used the image hose-end premixed sprayer and it did absolutely nothing for the weeds, but at least it did not harm the lawn. The Ortho with dicamba did kill the weeds, but harmed the grass severely. Scott's weed and feed also harmed the grass. Have only been having some success with atrazine so far. Im going to leave a small area in the back where I will let the weeds grow so I can test different products out.
I bought my first house when I was 22, my first year with my lawn I was lost. I’m now 24 and enjoy spending time outside, my wife says I’m obsessed...I think she’s correct
Bingo!! What can you do about those? As soon as it gets warm the henbit goes mad before the grass gets started. (plus all the creepy junk I have going on right now). I am always afraid to break out the glyphosate for fear of being to close to breakout for my zoysia. Hep me hep me
I actually used the spectricide weed killer and I honestly didn't see much of a result. Maybe I will try the first product you mentioned on my 4 gallon pump sprayer
Hey Allyn, I named my kids Curley Doc 1,2,and 3! Other than you my favorite lawn care channels are Matt Martin and John Perry.Love learning about lawn care!!
I just spot treated with a ready to use weed control to my lawn(centipede in MS). When I bought the stuff I didn't realize how many weeds I had in my lawn. Unreal how they have already popped out. Applying the way I did will probably be as effective as someone trying to put out a fire with a hand held watering can. But...will see how it does and follow up later with something else before it gets too hot. Also ordered some Milorganite from Ace Hardware. Should have it in next week but won't apply until temps are consistently in the 70's. Won't be long here as its 70 as I type this. Got some more cool days forecast tho. Probably apply towards the end of March. Btw....enjoy your videos. Never used Milo before so will be interesting to see how it performs. Bought this house 3 years ago and the previous owner did nothing to the lawn. I've been plugging with centipede sod here and there trying to fill in areas. Hopefully this stuff will encourage more growth.
Tundrastruck!!! Hello from Ellenton, just discovered your channel and am starting immediately to try to get my lawn in much better shape! Thanks for providing this content.
I feel kindred to Vennessa. I was in the same boat last year before I really started following this channel. I'm enjoying these 'for rookies' going to the big box series. I still have budgeted for some of the more advanced stuff (N-ext products hopefully some Carbon-x), but I'm old and still like nerding out in the brick and mortar places.
How does it feel to walk into your local Home Depot and know you have more knowledge of lawns than all of them combined? When they ask you if you have any questions you should say no, do YOU have any questions my friend? Great video.
Reminds me of Ron Swanson in parks and recreation when he walks into a big box store and an employee asks him if he needs help and he simply says, "I know more than you" and walks away haha
Allyn, I live in South Georgia and have Centipede Grass. I want to know if the Spectracide Purple bottle for Centipede or the Image for Centipede RTU would be the best choice for my lawn.
Got some weed control sitting on the shelf myself, but dont want to use it yet until the green starts pushing so it's not super bare for too long. Damn 80% weeds yard.
I like spraying for weeds and crabgrass with my 4 gallon battery unit. Love watching those weeds die. Noticing less and less every year I do this now. I like spraying over granular, to be honest, except for regular fert apps. Spraying gives me a chance to slow down and really survey my land while I do spray. And I love I can custom order my N-Ext products now for more spraying fun!
At the 2 min 42 mark in the video, I see the HDX 1GALLON tank sprayer in the background. On one of your videos you had replaced the nozzle with a fan tip nozzle on this sprayer. How did you replace the existing nozzle and attach a fan tip nozzle on this sprayer?
I have centipede grass in Raleigh, NC area. The Poa Annua (annual Bluegrass) is out of control. Every year I have have more and more. Also have some type of creeping bermuda like grass . Pre-emergents don't seem to work. I have previously used the Spectricide Post emergent you showed in this video and it seems to work, but not always. I'd like to kill it before it flowers which it is starting to do now. HELP!
You have mentioned pennant magnum in the past. I saved up and purchased a bottle and I am excited to use this season (wisely) for the first time. Do you have a video or blog for best practices for PM?
Damn. North Texas had a freak week of highs in the 70s and 80s for 4 days straight and now the lows are going to be in the 20s-30s this weekend. Weeds are popping up everywhere already. I was tempted to throw down the granular prodiamine I bought, but I figured it'd be best if I wait til later this month.
Thanks for all the knowledge and helping us noobs become familiar with better lawn care. We just bought our first house last August and I’ve been attempting to green my lawn. Still not sure what type of grass I have here in SoCal but trying to learn. Went to Home Depot and used the same Ortho RTU spray as Vanessa the last few weeks to spot spray dandelion, clover, and chickweed. I sprayed every day as the dandelions came back and soaked the clover daily until they died. Now I have some brown spots where it also killed the grass even though the bottle said it shouldn’t. Do you have any tips on fixing brown spots? Do I have to rake it up and plant new grass?
Europe banned chemical lawn weed control. The only alternative is Perlka Kalkcyanamide. This is a fertilizer that would also reduce weeds. Please give your opinion. Great channel love to watch and learn.
You know Southern AG is on amazon right? Literally 3+ years of 2-4D for the same price as a home depot product. Had a lot of fun with the southern AG products.
Hopefully you will have a solution for Japanese stiltgrass, its tiresome pulling this weed every year. Nimbelwell was another I had to dig out in 2018. One treatment of Tenacity did not work, too late in the season for additional treatments.
Al, You said that the reduced concentration varieties may take 2 or 3 apps to kill the weeds. How long should you wait between applications? Thanks for the video.
Sta-Green makes a product called Crab-Ex which contains Dithiopyr. It also contains 2-4-6-S (and am not sure what that is). Used it 3 months ago on Palmetto in 300 sq ft which was mostly bare area that had tropical signal grass and crab grass. I now have st. aug coming up from the buried stolons. Pulled the signal grass by hand. The young grab grass which was germinating seems mostly dead. No other weeds in that area so far.
come to texas and fix my lawn lol.theres this one patch next to the driveway where it never grows thick but i pull the weeds when they grow our cars run over the sides of the lawn compacting and ruining the grass.
Hi LCN, I just found your channel and I really enjoy your content. I'm in the Chicago area and have a problem. Thistle plants have been growing in my lawn. i pull them out by the root, but they always come back throughout my front and back yard. I've been fighting this for ten years. What do you recommend for a long term strategy to eliminate the Thistle plants. Thanl You!
Allyn, I have been away from home for a long time and missed putting down pre-emergents. What's your advice starting in April (in coastal SC with centipede)?
Can you please give me a suggestion for a ready to use spot spray weed killer for St. Augustine? I’m in Texas and want to only spot spray since I have two cats that frequent our yard. My back yard needs most of it sprayed but I’m afraid to because of the cats so I’m planning on using Scotts fertilizer weed killer combo granules in the back.
Can you go over how to DIY weed control for less? If you go to a tractor supply store, you can mix your own for pennies. Example: Gordon's Trimec Crabgrass Plus is ~$9 for 32 ounces (~28 cents/ounce). Premix is easy, but a gallon of premix is ~$19/gal and using concentrate with your own sprayer is ~70 cents/gal.
Allyn. If you spot spray Imazaquin, it will cause every spot sprayed to look stunted and less green vs if you evenly spray a well fertilized and healthy lawn. Imazaquin is not for a dried out or starved lawn. It is also not for a lawn that needs to recover from disease or insect damage either.
@@TheLawnCareNut Damage from Imazaquin lasts a long time. When I use it, effect on the lawn is that it is a little less green and growth regulated for at least a month. I would not use it on grass that is in growth regulation.
What can we use on our lawn, we are in a drought, going 3 years now, not even allowed to water the garden without getting fined. Recently we have had some amazing rains after super hot weather, 40°C so everything is bouncing back except our lawn is super patchy and full of weeds. Wonder what products to use in South Africa
My main lawn have large (8'x15') of heavy clover and the side strip is probably an even 40% clover mix. I have Bermuda and TTTF mix plus some random crab grass. I'm not worried about the crab grass so much or the patchiness between the berm and TTTF. I just want the clover to go away. I cannot get it to die. I have tried multiple post imergance and heavy spot treating. . Any advise? Middle Tennessee by the way.
What’s the best OTC post emergent for tifway 419 bermuda in Charlotte, NC? I like how you mentioned picking a product that has multiple modes of action. Most all the products at our local big box stores contain the same 2 or 3 active ingredients.
My yard is a mix of tall fescue and perennial rye but I've had a patch of kbg and it seems to be spreading like wildfire every year through my yard. Is there a way of stopping this without just straight up killing it off?
This question has nothing to do with this video but I live in Salt Lake City Utah. I didn’t get to aerate last fall and so now I’m thinking about my compaction, should I core aerate this upcoming spring or should I go with the [N-Ext] Compaction Cure Combo?
The Lawn Care Nut thanks man I appreciate all you do! I assume I can go to my local big box store and purchase the ortho hose end sprayer and be fine right? Another thing, I want to try out the Carbon X this year, would I replace the milo or use both?
Its a good product and also my base line control. Usually I use the concentrate and a surfactant to give it a little boost. If the crab grass is more established then I add quinclorac to my tank sprayer also.
How does pendimethalin stack up against the other preemergents? I'd love to use dithiopyr, prodiamine, or mesotrione but cant find in a cost effective size for my lawn.
Hi Alan I’m up in New Jersey I have a cool season mix I wants heard somebody mention putting down fertilizer before snow would you recommend any sort of fertilizer before any storm comes due to all the nutrients that snow has with the fertilizer combined in that be good for spring
Normally if you are spraying established weeds with products like Allyn was showing at Home Depot, you want to avoid watering & rain for a while. Pre-emergents generally like to be watered. These things will be stated on the labels. If you must apply both at the same time, apply Pre-E first
Hey, I wanted to ask you, I also live in NC and have noticed tons of JohnsonGrass growth in my lawn the last few weeks. I have a tall fescue turf lawn that was overseeded last fall. How should I tackle the Johnson grass?
I'm in coastal South Carolina. Is it too soon to use atrazine?? temps will be 70's and low 50's for the next week or so. funny too because that is the same spectracide atrazine I bought. same bottle and everything! Great minds think alike. thanks Alan
What if I buy a round up pump sprayer... can I pour the ready to use in and blanket spray? I’m not worried about harming my lawn because it’s NOTHING BUT creeping Charlie, Clover and goose/crabgrass.
I'm dealing with an abundance of creeping Charlie that crept under my neighbors fence...that and clover. I have had zero luck in finding a weed killer to take them down.
Just put down my Prodiamine application but while walking the lawn I noticed more weeds in the lawn than I thought I had. Soil Temps are right at 55. How soon after the prodiamine application can I throw down a blanket post emergent?
Allyn, I sprayed some Atrazine this weekend and got a little close to some Boxwoods and Azaleas, do you think it will kill my shrubs or will they be ok? what do you think?
just bought a house. lawn is 90% weeds and 10% bald spots. I want to basically kill off everything we start over, as well as an abandoned yard next door because it's got tons of weeds too. My issue is, we've kind of pseudo adopted federal cats and don't want them getting hurt by anything we do lawn-wise since they hang in our yard and are friendly. Plus, we often have family dogs over to visit. What do you recommend?
Hey, not poking fun but I’d get rid of them federal cats.....they’re gaining and collecting intelligence on you. 2020 elections rolling round and everyone’s using federal cat agents to spy on voters. As for those 90% weeds, there are a few ideas of tackling them with organic or home remedies around the house without hurting your pets. Check around on Tube to get a list of them. After killing the weeds off you’re gonna have to debris your soil to clean things up and then enrich the soil to enhance seed germination and growth of new lawn. Putting new sod down after cleaning weeds out is another option. Yes, it’s a lot of work but the reward is priceless. You’re on the right path watching these videos.....good luck!
I have Bermuda grass in Texas. I mowed the lawn and added rye grass for the winter. I did not get a good result with the rye grass, I have patches in certain spots of rye grass. What can I used now to kill off the rye grass and not hurt the Bermuda??
I saw on the shelf next to one of the products you spoke about a biofungicide called Natria. Do you think it has any use on cool season turf in a children's play area?
Here is another one for you brother.... from Lake Norman Charlotte. Having a lot of POA annua coming up in my newly sodded Zoysia sod. I put the sod down last Sept. It's rooted well. Can I use POA constrictor? I put down Dimension pre emergent (pretty heavy actually) but its still popping up. I'm gonna put more down. I spot spray 2 4-D for other weeds and I have tenacity and love it but I don't think I can use it on Zoysia (although not sure if that applies when it's dormant) . HELP! DO I just let die when it gets warm and it will choke out?
Not Allyn, but I deal with a lot of Zoysia. Do not apply Poa Constrictor. That is what I use when I want to kill Zoysia in other turf types. Tenacity is also not a good idea. In Zoysia, you want Monument, Revolver, or Katana. Image(Imazaquin) is good too. The Dimension can work, but it needs to be a split application that is watered in right after applying. If it sits on the grass for more than a couple of days, the AI breaks down.
the poa will die as temps come up in spring, so i would not bother with it. Mowing your zoysia down to 1" will also help to get it out of there quicker. Then this season in 2019 apply prodiamine or dithiopyr in fall as soil temps fall to 70 coming out of summer. that will help
The Lawn Care Nut thanks Allyn helpful as well. Appreciate the feedback. Love the vids. Have to say keeping a good lawn in Charlotte NC is 1000x more difficult than long island NY. Had a beautiful fescue lawn weed free. Down here wow, tough.
Image gets the job done, but definitely a lot of collateral damage when you follow the label. Weed-b-gone on the other hand is weak sauce on many of the weeds I have.
I am 35 and started learning this year. It is never too late 😊

Watching this instead of the lame halftime show. Thanks.
Watching this while it's snowing outside. Hoping the the snow stop by March. Can't wait for my lawn to wake up, and green up.
it will be here before you know it!
Currently watching all of your videos to fix the lawn at my new home. I live in southern nh and can’t wait to get started.
I actually used the spectricide weed killer and I honestly didn't see much of a result. Maybe I will try the first product you mentioned on my 4 gallon pump sprayer
Loving the box store option evaluation and explanations! May need a garage organizing episode 😬
Thanks to LCN I've graduated on to the big boy herbicides. Neighbors helped the first year but it's go time when April comes in Minneapolis
Thanks, Alan. This is probably the most helpful (to me) video you've ever published.
Glad I found u. New to this lawn care but I have learned a lot just with this segment. Never thought I should read the labels. How wrong I was.
Hey Allyn, I named my kids Curley Doc 1,2,and 3! Other than you my favorite lawn care channels are Matt Martin and John Perry.Love learning about lawn care!!
Great video.
Thank you for all the tips and good background music
The spectricide works great! The Weed BGone will burn your St Augustine ask me how I know. Lakeland Florida lawn I’m still learning.

Well I got it your chanel is all about warm season grasses, how about more information about the fescue grass in the Charlotte N.C. area of Gastonia.
Please do a northeast one. I don't know of any lawn vids that do NJ, PA, NY. Thanks!
Pre-emergent then hand pick the weeds that come up. Price is right and great for the body!

Does it matter if you apply pre emergent down before fertilizer? I’m in the central Florida btw. Thanks!
What do I use for tall fescue grass
Have a weird question here: does tank mixed weed control like triplet go bad? Does it expire?
I killed my lawn in the fall but didn't get it seemed in time, now this spring there is zero grass and crazy weeds. What's the best way to recover?
What is the best way to get rid of moles in my yard?
Can you use both at pre emergent & hose end weed sprayer at the same time or is there a waiting period.
Thank you very helpful
you're welcome!
I'm in coastal South Carolina. Is it too soon to use atrazine?? temps will be 70's and low 50's for the next week or so. funny too because that is the same spectracide atrazine I bought. same bottle and everything! Great minds think alike. thanks Alan
if night temps are not going to dip below 49 then yes go ahead. atrazine works good in cooler temps too
What if I buy a round up pump sprayer... can I pour the ready to use in and blanket spray? I’m not worried about harming my lawn because it’s NOTHING BUT creeping Charlie,
Clover and goose/crabgrass.
I'm dealing with an abundance of creeping Charlie that crept under my neighbors fence...that and clover. I have had zero luck in finding a weed killer to take them down.
What should I use on Titan tall fescue grass here in TN?
Also I have a lot different bugs in my yard can you recommend any good pest deterrents.
Just put down my Prodiamine application but while walking the lawn I noticed more weeds in the lawn than I thought I had. Soil Temps are right at 55. How soon after the prodiamine application can I throw down a blanket post emergent?
if the weeds are actively growing, you can spray weed control . If night time temps (air temps) are getting in the 40s, you should wait
Allyn, I sprayed some Atrazine this weekend and got a little close to some Boxwoods and Azaleas, do you think it will kill my shrubs or will they be ok? what do you think?
let's hope for the best
@@TheLawnCareNut I'm hoping...
just bought a house. lawn is 90% weeds and 10% bald spots.
You’re on the right path watching these videos.....good luck!
great information ....my yard sucks I am in NJ and i have these funny looking purple head weeds that grow fast as hell. What can i use to kill them
Purple flower? It might be creeping Charlie/Jenny which I am trying to kill of myself.
I have Bermuda grass in Texas. I mowed the lawn and added rye grass for the winter. I did not get a good result with the rye grass, I have patches in certain spots of rye grass. What can I used now to kill off the rye grass and not hurt the Bermuda??
the rye will die as soon as day time air temps start getting over 85.
The Lawn Care Nut Thank you!
I saw on the shelf next to one of the products you spoke about a biofungicide called Natria.
Do you think it has any use on cool season turf in a children's play area?
I'll have to go back during fungicide season and do this same exercise!
@@TheLawnCareNut Thank you!
Then this season in 2019 apply prodiamine or dithiopyr in fall as soil temps fall to 70 coming out of summer. that will help
rey3472 thank you. Ill read up on those products. Appreciate the help!
@@TheLawnCareNut Poa cannot handle being reel cut unless a golf super is there to feed it fungicides and fertilizers.
What are your thoughts on the lesco product sold in lowes
Lesco makes good stuff
Image gets the job done, but definitely a lot of collateral damage when you follow the label. Weed-b-gone on the other hand is weak sauce on many of the weeds I have.
