From a fellow Chicagoan, thank you George. I never had it explained with the lawn needing to be saturated but that makes total sense. You just talked me out of it!
I’ve used weed and feed in a bottle that you attached to a garden hose. You turn the water on and the bottle of weed and feed acts like a nozzle so that you can spray it on the yard. Used it once and it worked great.
@@longislanddriver6336as a lawn guy in order for you to 100% have a perfect lawn at all times. Your pockets have to reflect that. It’s just not worth it for me to spend 4hrs at your house everytime. Expect to pay $1000+ a month for a residential sized lawn. Also as a homeowner you have to make sure your watering correctly, not letting dogs pee on it, any birds that may bring seeds or seeds that get blown in. Weeds are you to happen it’s how well you can prevent them and how fast you can get rid of them that matters. These companies are servicing hundreds of yards just like yours. If you think they are going to spend extra time on yours you’re wrong. Your best bet is learning to apply the applications yourself. And finding maybe a family member that does lawns on the side and will go that extra mile because they aren’t relying on it to pay the bills. Point is people think they can pay $150 and have new grass. In lots of cases it requires skid steer work, going over it 5 times with different equipment, being licensed to apply chemicals. Most the the grass you see that looks perfect is either a dad that loves his grass, new grass, or sod
If you live in warmer climate and have grass such as centipede or St Augustine be sure to get fertilizer that is appropriate or you can easily burn it. Many times it is labeled for southern lawns.
George, I happened on this video and you answered the pressing issues I am going to deal with today in my own lawn. Thank you for your concise explanations, getting to the point, and showing how it is all done. Hats off to you!
George cruising the clearance shelves just like I do. It’s my favorite part of lawn care, getting a great lawn for a tenth of those neighbors that get lawn service.
Just a few advantages of using these 2 products are that Ortho's lawn weed killer concentrate has the highest concentration of 2,4D out of all the lawn weed killers. Also, The Scotts lawn fertilizer is one of the few fertilizers that also has "Iron" as a ingredient which helps with greening up your lawn. 24 year HD associate here. This video is spot on.
This is great. Just bought my first home and have no clue how to care for a lawn. Can I cover the whole lawn with weed b gon or just hit the weeds? I only ask because I’m not sure even how to tell weeds from grass in my lawn
First of all congrats on the new home! and Yes you can spray your whole lawn, remember its only needs a light mist, do not go over it multiple times. Since you are going to spray everything, i recommend you pick up one of the bowling pin sprayers i mentioned in the video, you will get much better coverage.

i have the second nicest lawn on the block, and i use weed and feed. the best lawn has a retired property owner and he can spend all day on his lawn. so its worked pretty well for me. me and that guy are the only two houses with zero dandelions.
yes, just make sure the weed killer is fully dry on the leaf before you spread the fertilizer best time to apply ant killer is once you start seeing them emerage, usually in early spring as the temps start heating up
Holy Sh*t! What an excellent video. George, you are an excellent speaker! Straight up and to the point. You don't waste time. Lots of information in the shortest amount of time. Quick, precise and effective edits along with the cadence of your speech has resulted in an deftly delivered message. Keep up the good work! ...........and oh yeah, I agree, the application of Scotts weed and feed composed of relatively fine granules on a wet lawn results in a mess all over the rotary broadcast spreader and my shoes and socks. Sheeeeeesh! On another, somewhat unrelated note, what do you recommend / prefer to green up a lawn, a 28-4-10 65% Slow Release Fertilizer OR epsom salts - ( either braodcast granules or mixed with water and sprayed on the lawn )?
Thank you very much George. I'm heading out to Home Depot tomorrow to get the products you mentioned. I have a couple of questions if you don't mind. My back yard has all kinds of wild weeds, but the most dominant is Creeping Charlie (Ground Ivy). I'm about to head to the other video you suggested to watch in regards to weeds. Perhaps I will find the answer there on how to get rid of it. The second question. I have an 11' x 11' bare spot where a tree stump was removed, and I'm planning on grass seeding. I bought Scott's Kentucky Blue Grass mixture. I just wondered if you had any thoughts of the quality in comparison to other brands. Thank you very much-Joseph.
No problem Joseph, if you have creeping Charlie, this is the absolute best herbicide to control it: ua-cam.com/video/bcCpBVKpcSk/v-deo.html Also regarding scotts seed, their kentucky bluegrass is really nice! there is a youtuber named "the perfect cut" and his front lawn is 100% scotts kentucky bluegrass and it was one of the best lawns ive ever seen
Another great video George. I find it’s more cost effective to fertilize and treat weeds separately. Never had any luck with the granular weed and feed, actually fried my lawn pretty bad. The liquid weed and feed that you attach to your hose isn’t bad, but still prefer separate applications.
Big TMK I have some areas of the property that I'm trying to get the grass to continue to come in, expand from the rest of the yard and I'll use it as areas to let the horse graze. I am not going to break the bank or really spend a significant amount of money and would rather let it grow in naturally. What I've done was pull up as much weeds as I can and feel like lol and use an old school slang blade to sling small trees/shrubs and loppers to cut the one's that are a little thicker, I cut those down close to the ground. I think that once the grass starts taking over then it'll choke out those roots of the small trees and I'll continue to sling them down anyway. From what you just said though what do you think would be the best combo to use or thing to do and again I'm not trying to beautify my actual yard/lawn but just get the grass to come up evenly for the most part or decent then it'll be fine. Trying to give it a little boost I guess. I also think I need to give it attention in the fall as well as the spring to help it out but for now this late in the game what might be best to do, and spring fall recommendations?
@@PrincessCutLawnCarequestion: once the weeds die and it’s time to throw down turf builder, how do I know the turf builder will match my type of grass? I live on the west coast, Washington state.

Thanks, George! Following you again this season! Just curious if you are going to do a video on the new sod install and the maintenance for the first few weeks thereafter.
@@PrincessCutLawnCare Yes, we just installed Bermuda sod. Last summer torched the grass here in North Texas. Most homes around here have St. Augustine in the front and Bermuda in the back of the house.
Got some Scotts lawn build + weed killer. Just scattered the fertilizer on by hand. It did say leave for 24 hours before watering in. So gave it a soaking a day later.
THANK YOU! I've been telling people this for a long time, and now I can just link to your video! Weed & Feed is like putting antibiotics in your breakfast cereal - makes no sense. If you need to fertilize your lawn (and most lawns DO NOT NEED NEARLY AS MUCH FERTILIZER as the instruction on the package suggest) then apply exactly what it needs when it needs it. Look at the grass, not the calendar. If you have weeds, assess the problem and decide if a weed digger can do it. Those 5 Canada thistles in my east lawn were gone in 30 seconds. The large herd of sow thistles in my neglected veggie garden needed more firepower, so they got glyphosated.
Went to home depot looking to buy the weed and feed, and thought it out and thought it might be better to do them seperate. I picked out the same products you did. Makes me feel a lot better about the choices! How do you feel about the hose attached weed killers?
Great to hear! i dont like the hose end sprayers for herbicides, i find its hard to dial them in enough to get even coverage. herbicides require precise applications and the hose ends just cant do that properly.
In the past I used weed-n-feed. It worked but wasn’t great. As you said… messy. This year I did as you recommended in this video. Now I have a great looking lawn and it was a lot easier.
I walked backwards when I applied the Weed and Feed to keep from getting it on myself and stepping in it. A few weeks after application, my neighbors were commenting about how green my lawn was.
Your videos are very informative and to the point. I subscribed just for that. The fact you explain why things work and why things don't work for you is really good.
Good luck on your journey. Last year I started taking it serious. When they say it takes patience, it really does. I follow George and Ryan. Between the two, I was cutting professional stripes in my yard by September of last year.
As a landscape Pro, you know people give me money for how nice I keep their yard, Scott's is the best. Early spring and then again in July and you will never have weeds and your grass grows! The part about water was just nonsense, just keep watering your lawn it all works out.
Big box stores are stocking higher quality fertilizers now. Propeat and Anderson's are 2 examples. Both with small prills, propeat has homogeneous prills and Anderson's uses some carbon to assist in nutrient uptake.
@@PrincessCutLawnCare propeat is a peat covered prill. It contains a homogeneous prill which I like and 2 prill sizes. The greens style is a very small prill. Here in southern California, I always recommend Scotts Ultra Feed for lawns because it contains slow release fertilizer and has a high nitrogen content (40-0-5). It lasts about 6 months. The native soil here contains plenty of potassium and one only needs to apply phosphorous once because it cannot be flushed out of the soil so the fact that the PK is low in this fertilizer is of no consequence. Scotts Turf Builder (32-0-4) contains less nitrogen and it is not slow release so it must be re applied more often.
@@PrincessCutLawnCare Half? Scotts Turf Builder 32-0-4 contains 32 percent total nitrogen with 4.9 percent being ammoniacal nitrogen, 14.1 percent urea nitrogen, 11 percent other water-soluble nitrogen and 1.0 percent water-insoluble nitrogen. This product also contains 4 percent soluble potash, 7 percent sulfur and 2 percent iron. Nine percent of the product's contents contains slow-release nitrogen from methylendiurea, dimethylenetriurea and water-insoluble nitrogen.
Most people aren't smart enough to use one properly and no they do not cause striping, that's a myth , been using a drop spreader for decades and have never had an issue with using one
Do you like milogranite? I have a small yard and didn't want to spend a lot of money and I heard that was the best fertilizer so I purchased it a few weeks ago put it down and I really don't see too much happening my grass did get a little green but the empty patches stayed the same. So now it's dark green with dead patches
i like it. i dont love it. it works very well in warmer conditions (~80 degrees) as it requires hotter temps to activate the microbes. once its working it gives a great color.
Very nice video. May I add one more thing that i use? Blue dye and surfactant. I deal with an acre of lawn and without the dye I always miss spraying a lot of my pretty yellow lawn flowers. And of course the surfactant helps the liquid stick to the weeds for optimal coverage. New subscriber here, keep up vids. I appreciate guys that can explain things in easy terms for my pea brain.
Used weed and feed on my lawn. It was supposed to be for all types of lawns. I liked that because I had multiple grass types in my lawn. Well, it did a great job of feeding my weeds and killing the grass. I can't afford to resod my lawn, so now I have just weeds. Have tried to seed the lawn but none seem to grow. I'm going to have to go back and look at some of George's other videos and see if they can help me.
Pro tip: Those bowling ball pin shaped sprayers all fit the same lithium rechargeable pumps! So you can use different jugs with the same electric pump.
Another vote for Field King here. Mine works great. LCN had a video showing how the Scott’s one is made by Field King. Scott’s price point is much higher too. Got my FK on sale so…winner winner. 👍🇨🇦
George, First of all, great video and full of valuable info but I have a question. Can you put down the fertilizer, then come back over it with the Weed B Gone in a hose end sprayer? You're wetting the dry along with laying down the weed killer. A time saver if nothing else, but is it effective?
Thanks! If using a hose end sprayer than sure you can. Personally I like spraying my weeds with a pump sprayer so in that case I water in the fertilizer first
I stopped buying Scotts years ago. I felt like every time I applied Scotts I had other problems and needed another Scotts product. I was buying my new stuff from a local grass guy and then found Site One. Put your pre emergent down early to help with weeds and spot spray as needed. I use different things for spot spraying. Don't forget adding lime if the PH needed it. The best thing I ever did to my back yard was dethatching. Every 2 or 3 years. Add fertilizer and hold green lush grass.
no because that needs to be broadcast sprayed across the whole lawn, in this video i was spot treating weeds, but they can be mixed no problem if you wanted to broadcast both apps at the same time
Good advice for SMALL lawns. However, my lawn is larger. If I have significant weeds that little pump spreader is a waste of time. Go with a hose sprayer.
Respectfully, when you sprayed the liquid stuff you can see that there was also a plume of chemical spraying everywhere as well. Both liquid and powder have the same effect. At least with the powder you know where it is on your clothes. Weed and feed saved my lawn which was 90% weeds. I will consider using your method for future applications though.
Princess Cut Lawn Care - Hey George you know of anything cheap to buy to put down on a long gravel driveway that grows grass through it almost like a lawn. Every year I spray Round Up and some other products to kill the grass but it only lasts a short time and then I have to do it again or let it go. It's a pain & costly.
hi dave! you might want to look into a herbicide that will sterilize the ground like Mojave, you can get it here: amzn.to/49IESW1 please do your research before you use it as ive personally never tried it and it is a very potent chemical
@@PrincessCutLawnCare - I would love a powder or dry mix I could spread with a spreader rather than mix up another liquid but if this is the best I could spray it.

Man I just used Scotts weed and feed on my front lawn 2 weeks ago. It has worked good for me in the past. But I do like the way that you described. I'll have to give it a try on the back yard. Thanks.
Scott's weed & feed is the best for homeowners. A no-brainer.
I agree! I've had much better luck with the liquid Ortho than any other weed and feed in pellet form. Thanks for sharing.
No problem Paul! and great to hear!
I give the same advice, from a 40 year greenskeeper. Great video.
From a fellow Chicagoan, thank you George. I never had it explained with the lawn needing to be saturated but that makes total sense. You just talked me out of it!
No problem neighbor!
I’ve used weed and feed in a bottle that you attached to a garden hose. You turn the water on and the bottle of weed and feed acts like a nozzle so that you can spray it on the yard. Used it once and it worked great.
If trugreen did their job I wouldn’t need this stuff
I agree. Trugreen sucks.
I did lawn dr. For 3yrs, i have the same weeds in the same spots.
I dont care to call back for more treatments. Should be done 1st time.
I just cancel their services and now I’m here.

Clear, to the point, friendly and knowledgable. This really helped me out. Thank you!
Thank you my friend! And great to hear!
George cruising the clearance shelves just like I do. It’s my favorite part of lawn care, getting a great lawn for a tenth of those neighbors that get lawn service.
haha few things get me more excited than clearance lawn items 😂
Just a few advantages of using these 2 products are that Ortho's lawn weed killer concentrate has the highest concentration of 2,4D out of all the lawn weed killers. Also, The Scotts lawn fertilizer is one of the few fertilizers that also has "Iron" as a ingredient which helps with greening up your lawn. 24 year HD associate here. This video is spot on.
Also, be careful with the lawn weed killers......they are temperature sensitive and consistent temps over 90 may actually damage your lawn.
I used Scott triple it did a excellent job no complaints. The bag was $85 with tax. Even if it's a little messy just wash your clothes after.
Thanks George
Glad to see you were hitting the big box stores, that is where most of us shop 👍🏻
No problem Dave!
Most things we use are from big box except a small percentage of specialty products
@@PrincessCutLawnCare I am literally in Home Depot now my friend! Thank you so much for the quick reply, and I will be binging all of your videos! Thank you so much my brother.

Year 3 of weed and feed. Few weeds and lots of green .8 acres. Neighbors use pro lawn care but they always ask me who or what I use to care for my lawn. I do spot weed during the year in some areas.
i have the second nicest lawn on the block, and i use weed and feed. the best lawn has a retired property owner and he can spend all day on his lawn. so its worked pretty well for me. me and that guy are the only two houses with zero dandelions.
I don’t know what my yard looks like compared to everybody else’s cause I just don’t care
Do you apply it as a pre emergent before weed grows or after. What time in the year do you apply?
@@dozie6650 definitely before. As soon as the weather starts to warm up put it down.
. Awesome. Thank you for this. Do you do it twice a year. Like March-April and Oct-Nov?
@@dozie6650 you certainly could, but I just do it in early spring and have no weeds the rest of the season.
Can i apply the weed killer first before the fertilizer?
And when is the best time to apply the insect and ant killer for lawn?
Thanks
yes, just make sure the weed killer is fully dry on the leaf before you spread the fertilizer
best time to apply ant killer is once you start seeing them emerage, usually in early spring as the temps start heating up
No problem Joseph, if you have creeping Charlie, this is the absolute best herbicide to control it: ua-cam.com/video/bcCpBVKpcSk/v-deo.html
Also regarding scotts seed, their kentucky bluegrass is really nice! there is a youtuber named "the perfect cut" and his front lawn is 100% scotts kentucky bluegrass and it was one of the best lawns ive ever seen
@@PrincessCutLawnCare Thank you very much for the information and all your expertise. I sincerely appreciate it, and I will continue following you.
Another great video George. I find it’s more cost effective to fertilize and treat weeds separately. Never had any luck with the granular weed and feed, actually fried my lawn pretty bad. The liquid weed and feed that you attach to your hose isn’t bad, but still prefer separate applications.
Thanks Boss!
Most people misuse weed and feed… often by applying it too late in the day.
All weeds are not the same.
@@dohc1974 turf builder is perfect for your grass, only grass it doesnt do well with is centipede amd you def dont have that in WA
Should I aerate the lawn and a weed treatment and feed all at the same time? If not, what order and how long in between? Thanks. Great videos.
Thanks Dave! i would aerate -> feed immediately -> wait a week, than apply the weed control
reason being is the aeration process can introduce weeds from previous lawns and it can also agitate existing weed seeds promoting germination
Good luck!
Another excellent little nugget of lawn care knowledge. Thank you George.

Thanks, George! Following you again this season! Just curious if you are going to do a video on the new sod install and the maintenance for the first few weeks thereafter.
Appreciate that Shoaib! I dont have any sod projects to film content about unfortunately.
Did you just have sod installed?
@@PrincessCutLawnCare Yes, we just installed Bermuda sod. Last summer torched the grass here in North Texas. Most homes around here have St. Augustine in the front and Bermuda in the back of the house.
Got some Scotts lawn build + weed killer. Just scattered the fertilizer on by hand. It did say leave for 24 hours before watering in. So gave it a soaking a day later.
Good job George .. love the production and info in your videos 👍

@@PrincessCutLawnCare yeah learned that a few weeks ago. 30% of my backyard is white lol.
Thanks for the great videos! You say the instructions say to use 2-1/2 on spreader but the bag I have says 3-1/2?
no problem! always follow whats on the label, it can differ from bag to bag and location to location
Thank you!
Great content George! Your videos are on point and easy to understand. Your channel is one of my go-to’s for lawn care!
Thanks mike! Means a lot!
That’s smart!
That's smart! Never thought to do that. I'll have to try that!
Your videos are very informative and to the point. I subscribed just for that. The fact you explain why things work and why things don't work for you is really good.
Thanks for the sub!
Love your videos man! Just starting my lawn care journey and these help a ton
Thanks for the nice comment boss! good luck with your new hoddy!
I saw home depot started selling propeat online, thats awesome!
i have yet to try it, do you like it?
@@PrincessCutLawnCare propeat is a peat covered prill. It contains a homogeneous prill which I like and 2 prill sizes. The greens style is a very small prill. I used it this spring and like the results. Other thing I like is variety of content percentage so I can use what my lawn needs based on my soil test.
Weed and feed was banned in my part of the world (western Canada). I don’t miss the smell nor the dust, but it was convenient.
IMO it should be banned everywhere, not because it doesnt work but more because of the dust.
I stockpiled a lot after the Lieberals banned it.
Add an ounce or 2 of Vinegar to supress the smell.
@@PrincessCutLawnCare It was because the fertilizers are managed by our food inspection agency, so many languages are spoken here, and our labels are only written in two, they decided fertilizer should not be toxic and some people did not understand to not Weed & Feed vegetable gardens or small fruits like Strawberries.

Perhaps our way reduces liabilities for fertilizer makers and was pushed by insurance companies?
I do not know.

.
Scotts Turf Builder (32-0-4) contains less nitrogen and it is not slow release so it must be re applied more often.
never tried the ultra feed, gonna check it out
btw the turf builder is half slow release and half fast release
@@PrincessCutLawnCare Half? Scotts Turf Builder 32-0-4 contains 32 percent total nitrogen with 4.9 percent being ammoniacal nitrogen, 14.1 percent urea nitrogen, 11 percent other water-soluble nitrogen and 1.0 percent water-insoluble nitrogen. This product also contains 4 percent soluble potash, 7 percent sulfur and 2 percent iron. Nine percent of the product's contents contains slow-release nitrogen from methylendiurea, dimethylenetriurea and water-insoluble nitrogen.
How come no one uses a drop spreader anymore?
They are best optimized for seeding, not fertilizer as they can cause striping
Most people aren't smart enough to use one properly and no they do not cause striping, that's a myth , been using a drop spreader for decades and have never had an issue with using one
Do you like milogranite? I have a small yard and didn't want to spend a lot of money and I heard that was the best fertilizer so I purchased it a few weeks ago put it down and I really don't see too much happening my grass did get a little green but the empty patches stayed the same. So now it's dark green with dead patches
Also I didn't want to burn my grass not a pro
i like it. i dont love it. it works very well in warmer conditions (~80 degrees) as it requires hotter temps to activate the microbes.
once its working it gives a great color.
Bro, that pimp knife! 😂 😂 😂

Very nice video. May I add one more thing that i use? Blue dye and surfactant. I deal with an acre of lawn and without the dye I always miss spraying a lot of my pretty yellow lawn flowers. And of course the surfactant helps the liquid stick to the weeds for optimal coverage.

Thanks for the sub! and great tips!
I hate that yellow bag scotts weed and feed. I think it actually has dandelion seed in it. I've never had so much dandelion in yard. Do not use!
How often per season in the northeast should I apply these products?
Fertilizer monthly (not in summer though)
Weed be gone as needed but don’t exceed more than once per month

Used weed and feed on my lawn. It was supposed to be for all types of lawns. I liked that because I had multiple grass types in my lawn. Well, it did a great job of feeding my weeds and killing the grass. I can't afford to resod my lawn, so now I have just weeds. Have tried to seed the lawn but none seem to grow. I'm going to have to go back and look at some of George's other videos and see if they can help me.

Sick dude! I have four separate pumps/bodies and one electric pump. I’ll have to try that out this weekend.
one question I have is should apply the liquid only on the weed or spray it everywhere in the yard?
Depends how many weeds you have, if your whole lawn is filled than I would spray the whole thing
Thanks for sharing
Do you add the insect killer too the sprayer as well?
no because that needs to be broadcast sprayed across the whole lawn, in this video i was spot treating weeds, but they can be mixed no problem if you wanted to broadcast both apps at the same time
Scotts weed and feed is expensive and has never worked for me! The weed control as stated in the video is definitely the way to go!
Good advice for SMALL lawns. However, my lawn is larger. If I have significant weeds that little pump spreader is a waste of time. Go with a hose sprayer.
i agree
Ive been using weed and feed and now i use pool ph test strips to measure the ph of my grass soil. Ocassional wood ash mixed with water works well.
You can buy the Scott's weed and feed in liquid form ready to spray. I use it and it works awesome!!!! A little pricey but it works.
Should i apply before or after mowing my grass?
Good question No mowing 2 days before and 2 days after
@PrincessCutLawnCare Okay, thank you
Respectfully, when you sprayed the liquid stuff you can see that there was also a plume of chemical spraying everywhere as well. Both liquid and powder have the same effect. At least with the powder you know where it is on your clothes.
Weed and feed saved my lawn which was 90% weeds.
I will consider using your method for future applications though.
Great point!
Been using Weed and Feed for 20 years, best looking yard on the street, hands down. I apply it mid February and again in mid March, done. Ohio
What weed & feed do you use
Ok let me ask you about spectracide weed stop which is only Weed control from home depot, still not a good option? Thanks
Spectricide is great stuff!
