Regarding the matching frame rate, it will also help with video judder which will make things more watchable without the jerkiness experienced when the frame rate is out of sync. The only disappointment I have with the new 4K stick is that some of the functionality of the TV control does not work when paired with the echo dot. In particular the power on and off. When I speak through the voice control on the remote, it works fine and will control the on/off and any other functionality well. After I paired it with the dot, the dot can control navigation through the fire stick (like open Hulu, tune to CBS...) but takes a dump when I ask it to either power on/off the TV. So I know the fire 4K stick is communicating fine with the TV regarding voice commands, the issue here is that it's not translating the voice command from the dot to performing the operation on the stick for the power on/off. I know everyone is down on the cubes, and I'll be the first to admit they could use a more powerful processor and more RAM, BUT they work flawlessly for me for hands-free voice operation. Thanks again for the great review especially for mentioning the processor - that information is not easy to find.

This sounds like a great device. I have Amazon Prime and really like the content that is offered by Amazon. I have absolutely no desire to watch UA-cam on a TV. I much prefer UA-cam on my desktop PC. It just seems better navigable.

FYI, the "Equipment control" features are really interesting. I just bought on of these tonight, and got it set up to control the TV and my old-school Yahama receiver. I'm not exactly sure how it all happened, but it is using all infrared, and it is working pretty flawlessly. Separating the tv power control from the volume control device is awesome. This is what I wish the roku did (the one with tv controls on the remote). It might be using HDMI-CEC to change the tv input, but not sure. The one thing that I don't like is that for power, it turns off both the TV and the receiver. In my set-up I only want to turn off the receiver, becuase I have the TV switched on the receiver power relay. There are timeouts to tune that maybe I can adjust to sabotage the tv power off. It's kinda amazing that I can tell the remote to "switch to roku" or "switch to media receiver"(chromeast), and it just works. It can change the tv input and the receiver input. In my case I have it set to only use the same "VCR" input for all the devices. And when I want to switch back to Fire, I can just pick up the fire remote and say "switch to firetv".
I might jump on one of these... I'm glad they fixed the deinterlace problem with hdhomerun. It annoys me with the older fire TV stick couldn't do it but it was only $20 and we are only using it for the bedroom.
Just an FYI neither of the Amazon devices I've purchased, a stick two years ago and a Toshiba 50 inch 4K two weeks ago, have been able to receive CBS Live with any regularity. This happens in two different houses with different providers. Never had a problem with Roku.
The one thing you didn't mention is that it requires more power than is supplied by your typical USB port on the tv. You ultimately have to use the power cord to run it.
@@pauldevine47 Yes it does say that, but the usb ports on 99% of TV's do not have enough power output to properly run FS's. I have had to use the power adapter with 1Gen, 2gen & the 4k FS's. Do a google and you can read more, but you need to use the power adapter for it to run properly no matter what they say.
Great Review, Probably one of the best so far on the new Firte TV Stick 4K. You said your Netflix did not work properly with Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision? I had same issue with mine, except I was able to fix it with some settings. In "Display and Sounds" Video Resolution - Auto "Up to K Ultra HD" Match Original Frame Rate - "On" will show off when on is Selected. Color Depth- "12 bits" LG Oled 65B7A TV is up to 10bits but can handle 12bits also. Calibrate Display - "No Scale" Dynamic Range - "Adaptive" After those settings on my Fire TV Stick 4K Dolby Vison now shows up on Netflix and on my DENON X6400H Dolby Atmos 11.2 Receiver, now works. ;o) Hope that helps you and others out some.
Does this device upscale 1080p to 4k as good as the apple tv 4k? I wanted a nvidia shield but their picture quality wasn't very good. Just need a device to stream great quality 4k hdr with true accurate colors

Received fire tv stick 4k Oct. 31, 2018, worked fine for a week or so, the volume up and down, mute and on/off buttons work great. Today Nov. 11th my stick "bricked". Remote stopped working, pop up screen, cannot connect to home. Called Amazon, attendant ran some tests, failed. They sending me a new on cost free in two-days. Period! Question: So I can't help but notice this new stick ALWAYS outputs Dolby D +. No matter what. It's strange because to me it seems to sound a bit louder than my previous 2nd gen stick. I am unable to get Dolby Atmos audio on my Dolby Atmos supported soundbar when I played Jack Ryan (UHD) from prime video app on Fire TV 4k stick. When I checked to see the Display & Sounds -> Audio -> Surround Sound setting in the fire tv 4k stick, it only shows Best Available, Stereo, Always DD plus, Always DD as options. No Dolby Atmos option?? Did you change any setting in the fire tv stick to receive Dolby atmos audio when streaming from prime video?
My PC MONITOR doesn't have built in speakers. If I connect this stick to the hdmi port on the Monitor, can I cast Audio to echo devices or bluetooth speakers?
Is it still as buggy as the other firesticks? I get so frustrated with how clunky, slow, and unresponsive the firestick interface can be. Like you click on it and it takes a second or two extra to scroll where you want it to. That and it freezes or exits out of an app or movie just by pressing fast forward or rewind once. Then of course the dreaded network unavailable screen where it won't let you do shit even though it is clearly connected. Any issues like this still? You don't address any of that in the vid. Thanks
They probably got other more updated new hardware coming in or it costs less because it has less physical features like no usb ports for flash drives or other usb devices,no additional memory expansion with the use of a XC Micro SD card, no need for digital audio out connection since HDMI sends audio out in the best format along with sending the video of course,& Ethernet if needed can be purchased so they're not forcing you to pay for the Ethernet unless you Truly need it or prefer to use it (like I do). I really believe it is because technology is improving & speeding up, especially around these times with what is taken place with the planet & us that inhabit it. I have sony 2017 930e 65 in which support dolby vision via it's own google tv netflix app (but no atmos). When I plug the 4k stick in my onkyo tx-nr 676, it still detect dolby vision from netflix app on the stick, but still no atmos. I looked up dolby website, it doesnt show fire tv as supported device for atmos. Is this the same case for you?
Lon have you updated it? I just received my device and when it turn on HDhomerun it would flicker a green screen during commercials, I looked it up and it looks like it has a deinterlacing issue
The remote only controls the volume of the television, correct? What if i connect the stick with a monitor which does not have a volume control of its own? Would the remote volume control still function and change the master volume of the stick, if it has any?
Does the Fire TV Stick 4K support DD+ to DD transcoding ? My audio system only supports DD and don't want to end up with only stereo on Netflix or Prime which would be the case if transcoding has been removed from this latest Fire Stick. Caught a cold on this issue with the Roku Streaming Stick+.

The UA-cam issue is no biggie. Just watch it through your phone and connect to the fire stick with the WiFi/TV logo when you tap the screen. After it connects you can watch it on the tv screen.

I was going to pull the trigger and saw how it performs with plex. I want something smaller and less power hungry than my HTPC, looks like I am stuck with it. AndroidTV boxes seem to be crap for this aside from the NVIDIA shield. How does Plex perform with ethernet?
Kodi (or MrMC) plays 4K videos better on the Fire TV than Plex imo. I've been able to run 4K videos at 50 mb/s on mine with Kodi. The same videos stutter in Plex.
I have a 720 P plasma TV in 3.0 sound which includes tower speakers and a center channel. I will do Atmos eventually. Which is a better deal the shield at $140 or this fire stick TV at $60, and both come with the free Alexa.dot.I just plan on using it for TV and movies and not really games which one is best in my situation? I may check out the games but is it worth the extra 80$ for ethernet connection?

It still dosen't have the zoom feature. My firestick is blown off the screen edge and there is no way to adjust it. I feel as if Amazon relied on the TV manufactures to handle that and the TV manufactures relied on the device manufactures to handle it.
That would be the TV manufacturers responsibility to adjust the aspect ratio, if your TV doesnt have this feature then it must be a very incredibly old TV.

Hi Lon. Had the Fire TV with 4K Ultra HD for the last two years on a Yamaha 4k A/V theater receiver and an Epson 6040U 4k projector. Worked brilliantly until it failed recently. That device is not currently available so I waited until 11/1 to purchase the Fire TV Stick 4K with all-new Alexa Voice Remote. Set up does not adequately walk you through a theater install so I guessed at the answers. Bottom line: VERY DARK PICTURE. Did several factory resets trying different options. No change. Tried customer support. TERRIBLE. Two hang-ups before I got someone to stay on the phone. She kept saying to try the device on a TV; she was not able to answer anything about a theater install. I have all the latest WIFI devices, but wonder if the network cable option might be the answer. Alternatively, would like to be able to get the previous generation device. I will be returning the latest 4K stick device unless someone knows the correct settings. Any suggestions?
Other videos said 4k will only be 4K If specific tv shows or movies are 4K enabled on Netflix or amazon tv, (you pay extra for 4K Netflix service), which is very few selections and not worth the extra bucks. In other words, the fire stick real only benefits is speed and interface, not so much quality improvement , is this true?
I'm not sure about other (function/quality) differences between Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Stick 4K. I think there are minor differences. But the first part is absolutely true, of course. If the media just isn't available in 4K, this stick wouldn't change that. But than again this holds true for 4K TVs etc.
Shield TV is the best way to go. Other Android boxes marketed as streaming devices are generally garbage and poorly supported (as in not supported) by the manufacturers. Shield is still by far the most powerful and is well supported.
@fragonarag It does work I just paired the NEW fire tv remote to my Nvidia Shield 2017 It shows as "AR" However the volume control seems to be not working. If you have custom apk's like I do for my use I have to figure out why it doesn't bring up the keyboard properly. It doesn't do that on native apps. Until I figure it out you are better off getting the one without the volume. Which is fine and everything works. :) Sorry man if that is the option you are looking for. If you have a recent samsung tv like mine you can use the cec controls and use the tv's actual remote that works as well on both Fire TV and Shield.
Upgdate Hey I got the new remote to fully work. since I had cec controls on I took that off and just use the standard android volume and it works. Granted I don't have my volume setup for my receiver but it's not a big deal I have my onkyo app on my phone takes a second to fire it up and set volume for that. :) The power button works too!

I'm having major issues with HD Homerun on the new fire stick. It's to the point that we are back to using the old one. It's slow but it works.
Does spmc still work on this new firestick? Apparently that allows you to auto switch refresh rates. At least on older fire devices.

I just got the amazon fire tv stick non 4k 2nd gen for 25 dollars. Its a big upgrade over the 1st gen stick!

The UA-cam issue is no biggie. Just watch it through your phone and connect to the fire stick with the WiFi/TV logo when you tap the screen. After it connects you can watch it on the tv screen.
I'm hoping you can review the new Jetstream 4K Android TV that is available at Wal-Mart (US). Seems to be better than the MiBox. Please do a review on the Jetstream box.
I was going to pull the trigger and saw how it performs with plex. I want something smaller and less power hungry than my HTPC, looks like I am stuck with it. AndroidTV boxes seem to be crap for this aside from the NVIDIA shield.
How does Plex perform with ethernet?
Kodi (or MrMC) plays 4K videos better on the Fire TV than Plex imo. I've been able to run 4K videos at 50 mb/s on mine with Kodi. The same videos stutter in Plex.
The description on Amazon on black Friday states UA-cam is supported.
Fire has a web app You download for youtube and its works just fine. It auto connects to your browser (you select firefox or silk as default) .
I had a fire stick before but I had to return it. Didn’t really work well with UA-cam. I had to adjust the picture each time and that sucked.
I have a 720 P plasma TV in 3.0 sound which includes tower speakers and a center channel. I will do Atmos eventually. Which is a better deal the shield at $140 or this fire stick TV at $60, and both come with the free Alexa.dot.I just plan on using it for TV and movies and not really games which one is best in my situation? I may check out the games but is it worth the extra 80$ for ethernet connection?

It still dosen't have the zoom feature. My firestick is blown off the screen edge and there is no way to adjust it. I feel as if Amazon relied on the TV manufactures to handle that and the TV manufactures relied on the device manufactures to handle it.
That would be the TV manufacturers responsibility to adjust the aspect ratio, if your TV doesnt have this feature then it must be a very incredibly old TV.

You can just use a adb debugging tool & the wm overscan command to adjust screen edges if you have to.
Lon, I'm a little confused by the chart at 10:22. You've got 'Amazon Fire TV 2' as faster than 'Amazon Fire TV 3'? Okay so, let's assume that the Fire TV 3 is a stick and the Fire TV 2 is a box, then what version is the 4k stick that just came out? You don't have that listed either.

The newest 4K stick is rated below the 2nd gen firetv( I have 2, very GOOD) box and above the cube and firetv 3(don't let).. Hope that helps..

Hi Lon. Had the Fire TV with 4K Ultra HD for the last two years on a Yamaha 4k A/V theater receiver and an Epson 6040U 4k projector. Worked brilliantly until it failed recently. That device is not currently available so I waited until 11/1 to purchase the Fire TV Stick 4K with all-new Alexa Voice Remote. Set up does not adequately walk you through a theater install so I guessed at the answers. Bottom line: VERY DARK PICTURE. Did several factory resets trying different options. No change. Tried customer support. TERRIBLE. Two hang-ups before I got someone to stay on the phone. She kept saying to try the device on a TV; she was not able to answer anything about a theater install. I have all the latest WIFI devices, but wonder if the network cable option might be the answer. Alternatively, would like to be able to get the previous generation device. I will be returning the latest 4K stick device unless someone knows the correct settings. Any suggestions?
If you happen to see this Lon how about the DirecTV Now app? Does it perform better or do you not have a way to test it?
I don't have a subscription but I'd imagine it'll function well on here, the device seems like it has adequate performance.
Other videos said 4k will only be 4K If specific tv shows or movies are 4K enabled on Netflix or amazon tv, (you pay extra for 4K Netflix service), which is very few selections and not worth the extra bucks. In other words, the fire stick real only benefits is speed and interface, not so much quality improvement , is this true?
I'm not sure about other (function/quality) differences between Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Stick 4K. I think there are minor differences.
But the first part is absolutely true, of course. If the media just isn't available in 4K, this stick wouldn't change that. But than again this holds true for 4K TVs etc.

Shield TV is the best way to go. Other Android boxes marketed as streaming devices are generally garbage and poorly supported (as in not supported) by the manufacturers. Shield is still by far the most powerful and is well supported.

@fragonarag It does work I just paired the NEW fire tv remote to my Nvidia Shield 2017 It shows as "AR" However the volume control seems to be not working. If you have custom apk's like I do for my use I have to figure out why it doesn't bring up the keyboard properly. It doesn't do that on native apps.
Until I figure it out you are better off getting the one without the volume. Which is fine and everything works. :) Sorry man if that is the option you are looking for.
If you have a recent samsung tv like mine you can use the cec controls and use the tv's actual remote that works as well on both Fire TV and Shield.
Upgdate Hey I got the new remote to fully work. since I had cec controls on I took that off and just use the standard android volume and it works. Granted I don't have my volume setup for my receiver but it's not a big deal I have my onkyo app on my phone takes a second to fire it up and set volume for that. :) The power button works too!
