    I have the 2018 cube and use it just to turn on my smart devices, TV and soundbar. It’s worth it just for that! I bought one for my mom as well. It’s a must have for the elderly.

    Excellent review. Obviously, not all people want the same thing and to dismiss the Cube completely because of its lack high end performance is short sighted.

    • @RickyCash
      @RickyCash 4 роки тому

      Surely you are not suggesting he dismissed the device for everyone. He rightfully dismissed it for the enthusiast crowd. Just like the existing one was a disappointment this one will be also. He acknowledged that Amazon knows it's market and this device fits in to their needs.

      @@RickyCash No, not at all. I began with "Excellent review." Perhaps I should have said "anyone who dismisses the Cube completely. . . is short sighted." Lon did just the opposite, hence the "Excellent review."

    Been useing a firetv 2 for 3 years...very good performance and simple. Have been useing a Gen 2 fire cube 2 days, a short time I know... seems better.
    Had issues with Netflix on the firetv 2, Gen 2 cube Netflix has been better, so far. On sale for $90, right now.
    I'm happy.

    Lon, you need to go into the Plex app settings and switch the refresh rate setting to OFF, it seems there is a conflict if both the cube and Plex have the setting ON. I had the same trouble as you but when I set the Plex refresh rate setting to off and the cube set to on it worked great.

    I have both a Fire Cube and an NVIDIA SHIELD (Everybody LOVES the SHIELD for some reason) and I've had nothing but problems with the SHIELD. First off, I get maybe a week of use before it starts throwing up random errors. Just yesterday it gave me random HDCP error meaning I couldn't watch anything other than UA-cam until I switched HDMI1 to HDMI2, a couple weeks before than the screen started flashing black and static, forcing me to switch from HDMI2 to HDMI1 (the SHIELD really likes forcing me to play HDMI hopscotch) and despite NVIDIA and Amazon saying over and over again the SHIELD has Alexa compatibility, I have never gotten my Echo to send a command to the SHIELD properly (it tries to send to the TVs native OS no matter how many times I clearly say "on the SHIELD") etc etc etc. The SHIELD has been a dumpster fire when it comes to functionality for me. Surprisingly enough, the "inferior" device, the Fire Cube 2, has had absolutely no issues since I got it.

    Worst part of Fire TV products is the OS. Way too restrictive even if you install google play store on there. It's hassle to override the default launcher with launcherhijack and it doesn't work perfectly either.

    • @Snipes1975
      @Snipes1975 4 роки тому

      @Jeff N Looks like a no go now. I used to use "luxmounts.com/googleplay". All you had to do was download the 4 APKS, click done after each download without opening them then restart the system but now the Firestick will allow you to install The Play Store and Google Play Services but not Google Services Framework or Google Account Manager which are both a major necessity in the app working. I'm sure there's gotta be a way to do it without using a knockoff like Aptoide. I'll have to do some research into this. Wish I could be more help. But btw.... if you have anyone with a Kindle Fire HD 10 that website should still work for that. Take care and good luck.

    Wish my experience with the Fire Cube 2nd Gen was as positive as yours, Lon. Total voice control is essential for us and it's why we bought it; our experience with it so far is extremely disappointing, inconsistent and unreliable! Your review colleague Hibbert's review on it seems to reflect our experience as to just how bad its voice control is working in our all-Alexa dependent household. Some of the listed voice commands never work; others work one time and not five minutes later with the exact words used; simply turning the TV on and off sometimes Alexa does it only for the word "TV" and other times only for the word "Television" and other times tells us that command is not supported. It's maddening for people like us who are virtually dependent on precision voice control, for example in ten or twenty second rewinds to catch words or actions missed. If we could easily and conveniently have used the physical remote we would have stuck with our FireStick4K.

      There won't be much of a increase in quality if any at all. I used both the first and second Gen cubes. The second Gen was worst than the first. The second Gen was lightening fast but constantly froze and freezing is a issue they have yet to resolve. Amazon has the resources to produce a quality, premium product but they choose not to do so. The first Gen lasted for eleven months and the Second Gen for thirteen months so longevity is also an issue so I assume they are manufactured to be disposable.

      Iv been a "cord cutter" far far longer than probably anyone watching this video or making this video. Im not going to say a nuc is the worst media player out there, but its not in the running for best by any stretch of the imagination. Even if the only thing your doing is using Kodi or Plex with a nas its still far from the best option. The Shield does have a few issues I hope they fix with the next version, but it is hands down far better than any HTPC I have ever built. That is saying a lot too, the first HTPC I built the only real option for software was myHTPC.
      What I am really waiting to see is how Kodi on the Xbox One turns out, especially now that it has Google Assistant. My original modded Xbox is still probably my favorite media player, and I know Kodi and the new Xbox will never be as great, but those were some fond memories.

      EDIT: I guess you guys are talking about pure, uncompressed 10-bit UHD content. If so then yes a 100mb interface will definitely not suffice for that sort of media. I tested it with the Jellyfish files (which seem to be the benchmark with this sort of stuff). The 120mbps file would buffer like crazy but ironically play smooth as silk over my WiFi (Cisco Meraki). All my 4K stuff usually consists of rips in H.265 format and always plays fine for me on my Fire TVs/Cube regardless of connection type, which is why I initially got confused with this comment.
      Personally I don't feel like I'm missing a great deal from not downloading uncompressed 50GB+ content all the time, maybe that will change in the future but I secretly hope not as it sounds like a good way to run out of storage space!

  • @fredreed2001

    I will admit this is still very poorly made. There are several problems.
    1. no way to expand the storage capacity beyond the 16GB.
    2. There is no ethernet port.
    People go buy either a Roku or the nvidia shield tv pro 2019 where you can add a external HDD for more storage Space.

    • @3vil1nt3ntions9
      @3vil1nt3ntions9 4 роки тому

      TECHNICALLY YOU CAN expand the storage... just takes a lil effort. You need an OTG micro usb cord or adapter, because most of the devices from 2015 and up other than the sticks, support otg. there are methods currently available to make the sticks support otg, but this requires extensive and extreme measures and will most likely (50%) of the time end in failure, and either a bricked device, or at the least a functional but slightly damaged one.
      For the sticks it requires THE REAL jailbreak.... not just sideloading apps, but actually ROOTING the device, unlocking the bootloader, flashing custom kernels, flashing custom recovery, and the procedure is completely different depending on which device you have (currently 4 different builds of fire sticks )... perform the correct procedure on the WRONG device and it will appear to have worked until you attempt to boot it, and at that point the damage is done, with a bricked or bootlooped device. Most people wont digest the extensively detailed steps to guarantee a successful mod, so in that sense i highly recommend either paying for one that has already been completed, or just avoiding a firestick alltogether and get an android box, or fire tv. This is pertaining ONLY to the topic of expandable storage on the FireStick. Nothing else. Sorry didnt mean to hijack your comment.
