  • Radiator Fan Won't Turn Off and Temperature Stuck at 160 Degrees: 2014 - 2019 Silverado & Sierra: Bad Thermostat
In the video Sean also goes over why the radiator fan won't turn off on your 2014 - 2019 Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra. Sean informs you that the thermostat on your truck may have gone bad, and will need to be replaced before your radiator fan begins to operate like normal.
We recommend changing both the thermostat and the sensor at the same time. (GM Coolant Temp Sensor Part Number: 12608814) The three-video playlist for this job and troubleshooting is linked below:
NEW VIDEO: • Radiator Fan Won't Tur...
PLAYLIST: • Radiator Fan Won't Tur...
If you are still having issues, make sure you (safely) disconnect the battery. That will reset your trucks computer. Linked below is a trouble shooting video: 👇

Linked below are two comparable sensors to pick from, and everything you will need to get this job done. (FYI, “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.”)

Just a heads up, if you remove the cap from the coolant reservoir tank it will relieve the pressure, then put the cap back on so that it doesn't drain out. Otherwise, awesome walk through! Thanks!

Would you recommend to start with the temperature sensor, or go straight to the thermostat? I haven’t gotten a check engine light so I can’t pin point what it truly is with a code reader thanks. I was thinking of just starting with the sensor first, but maybe through your guys experience you can share what works best.

I just replaced the sensor and the problem continued with the coolant fan running and the temp gauge stuck on 160°. I drove it about eight miles, still no change. Disconnected the negative connection on the battery, waited about 10-15 minutes to reset the computer, hooked it all back up and everything is now working perfect! Thanks guys you saved me a bunch of money and downtime at the dealer.

I have a 2014 4WD, V6, EcoTec3, 4.3L. The fan wouldn't turn off one day but the next few days everything was fine. About a week later it started staying on again and the check engine light turned on. My temp gauge read zero when it stayed on. Only thing that popped up was thermostat when I checked for codes. Found this video and it helped so much! Fixed it and after a couple starts the check engine light went off by itself, no battery reset needed. For anyone about to do this with this model, I needed less than a gallon of 50/50 dexcool and went a little over the cold full line because the hoses were empty.

What most of these vids on this topic don't mention is that you'll need to use your code reader to reset the error code once you are done, or disconnect the battery for a few minutes. Failure to do so meant in my case at least, the problem was unchanged. Even thought there's no CEL, there is still a code.

Same problem, change the sensor, did not fix the issue. My AC stopped when the fan would not shut off. The tire pressure for 3 tires were on as low on air [ they were around 30 lbs] about a week prior to the fan not shutting off. Check engine lite came on a day later than the fan wouldn't turn off. I disconnected the battery for about 15 minutes and after putting it back on, everything worked correctly. Fan shut off correctly, tire sensors stopped showing low air, ac blew cold air and check engine lite went off. It has been about a week now and no issues [hopefully] yet.

In this series, after replacing the sensor and the thermostat did you have to drain the coolant reservoir and radiator? Or did you only drain and fill the coolant reservoir, only asking since I'm going to take on this repair this week! Thanks in advance!

    • @TheBrothersWorkshop

just experienced this fan issue on my 14 sierra. my immediate thought was temp sensor or thermostat. did research and it looks to be it.. BUT in my case what i did was while driving i popped in my obd2 elm bt adapter, and literally cleared the code while i was driving with TORQUE lol and the fan stopped and guage dial corrected itself to the actual current temp. Just in case these videos dont help the issue try that, i literally stopped the fan and corrected the problem with a simple fault clear. I'm sure theres still an underlying problem which i'll do the sensor and thermostat if this happens again, but i took a lazy man approach today.

Resetting the codes will only stop this issue for a short time. It will always come back. That is because you have not fixed the root of the cause. You have to replace the temperature sensor and the thermostat, then reset the computer and the issue will be fixed. Please watch all three of our videos on this topic.

Is it possible this issue and the temp sensor can make my truck not have cool air? Sometimes the fan runs on and it takes a while until the AC kicks in real cool, other than that I drive for like 20 mins for it to hit good, It’s not broken but just delayed. I just actually fixed my AC line about a year ago so that should be good. Im curious if the truck thinks the engine is overheating with the sensor broken, and using all my cooling towards the engine and not in the truck.

Online shows optimal 195 to 205 and why i picked lower of the two, but also suggests 207 is factory stock and helps run better and more efficient!! Soo, which should i use and 194F or return it for the 207F unit?!??

With the exact same symptom this video is showing! Remember every time you get an oil change they top off all of your fluids. After my investigation I noticed my coolant reservoir was over filled! Well, I Drained the excess coolant out with a spay bottle sprayer and this problem was solved!!! Of course, the mechanic denied my reservoir was not the problem. They do not teach these young kids small remedies in Tech school! Everyone know you should not over fill oil, transmission and coolant reservoir! Coolant reservoirs has a cold fill line very easy to see!!!!! SMH.

I Replaced my temp sensor and Unplugged the battery for 30 minutes everything worked for 24 hours and now it’s back to not getting any reading from from the temp gauge on the dash and the fan running constantly and turns off about 5 minutes after I shut the truck off…. Do you think it’s a Faulty sensor or thermostat issue? I only used a small amount of Teflon tape on the threads so it’s really not affecting the sensor imo.

From our experience this seems to be a cross platform issue. This issue occurs on the 4.3 V6, the 5.3 V8 and the 6.2 V8. It doesn't seem to make a difference if the vehicle is a truck or SUV. So, if you changed the sensor and that did not fix the issue, you will need to change the thermostat. I've linked two videos for you below. The first explains the issues that you're describing. I cleared those codes and the fan instantly turned off - one which will remain permanent until the engine completes enough cycles in normal range. I was coming home and all of a sudden I looked down and I noticed the temperature was around 180° which is really low and I was towing a boat. So pull off the Thruway Because it was my exit to get home. Thank God, and I noticed that my fan was running super high on the radiator like really high. So I get home and get in the driveway. It’s still running crazy high. I put on one of those meter things that I have and it said the temperature in my coat was 145°. My 14 sierra 5.3 is acting funny, the temp gage when driving is only going to second mark above 160 (bigger line between 160-210, in other words it’s in the middle) however recently I’ve noticed when I sit at idle for several minutes the gage will go to 210. But when go back to driving is falls back down. I’ve watched a couple videos now and done some reading. Is it the thermostat that needs replacing or something else? Thanks

Hey, I'm not sure what your issue is. Is your truck over heating, or the gauge just fluctuating? Either way this video explains how to change the thermostat, not diagnose an issue, other than the one explaining the beginning.

@@TheBrothersWorkshop not over heating. Just not getting to 210 mark when driving. Only noticed it the other day when I was sitting in a parking lot for like 30-40 minutes at idle looked down an low an behold it was reading 210. Finally back on the road an it dropped back down. I think the thermostat is sticking truck has 150k

@@jew0182 I have a 2015 Mine did this for about a month then Finally it stopped going back up to the 210 it would go slightly above the 160. Then christmas evening I got off my truck and the fans stayed on I took out the 40 fuses to get them to turn off and today Monday I changed both the temp sensor and thermostat today based off their videos and My gauges work, and the fans turned off. I lost about a half coolant jug during the process as I once done I opened a new jug and used half to replenish back to full

Did this solve the issue with the fan running?

Hey Garrett, replace the thermostat and the temperature sensor. We have a video linked here teaching you how to do that: ua-cam.com/video/aJeksrxcCDI/v-deo.html

Does it require programming to remove any code associated with it ?

As far as I know, there are no codes/indication lights. Check out.our troubleshooting video: ua-cam.com/video/wed9eZxPwsQ/v-deo.html

Great video. I followed step by step, however I still have the issue! I replaced the sensor like in your last video and now this and I also replaced a A/C relay, still the fan runs constantly and the temp gauge stayed at 160…any ideas?

Did you get the code cleared.
I went to auto zone and they put it on the computer. He said once I change it to come back to clear the code.
When he cleared the code the gauge started working and fan was back to normal.
Never had check engine light on!
