At 135,000 my 2016 Tahoe started the same stuff as everyone else here has described. No temp indication and fan running after shutdown. Dealership service guys diagnosed it as a thermostat and wanted a mere $540 to replace it. I thought that sounded pretty high, so I hunted and found your channel. Following your exceptionally well-done tutorial, I easily replaced both the thermostat and coolant temp sensor for about $90 worth of parts. God bless you! I am the furthest thing from a mechanic. I always said that, if I was smart enough to be a mechanic, I wouldn't have to be a pilot!
In case anyone else is wondering about torque specs: According to my Haynes manual the torque specs are 89 in-lbs for the thermostat housing bolts (unless you have a 6.0L engine, then it's 132 in-lbs) and 15 ft-lbs for the engine coolant temperature sensor (all engines). Hope this helps someone. Thanks for the video!
This video just saved me over $700 and kept me from having to take a day off work to get my car serviced. I am far from a mechanic, but the details in this video made it super easy to follow. I was able to get everything I needed (including the correct type of ratchet and sockets) for around $70 at the auto parts store. Great video!
Super easy to fix...1 hour! Changed both the temp sensor and thermostat. Temp running @ 210 where suppose to be and fans not running after engine off. I suspect was the sensor (IDK) but changed out both while doing this. Thanks for the expert advice.
Let me tell you! I’m an ok at home mechanic.. I watched this video last night when I went to bed because my 2018 Tahoe was doing the exact same thing last night coming home. My fan on my 2015 Yukon XL just started doing the same thing with continuously running. Your video helped me diagnose the cause quickly. On my vehicle a box ended wrench had plenty of room and worked just fine to remove and replace the sensor. Just wanted to put that out there since all three of my Craftsman sets don’t come with a 19mm deep socket but my wrench sets do have 19mm.

Had this happen today on my 2015 Suburban. No check engine light, but all the same symptoms, on a cold and rainy day, so clearly not overheating. Heat was still working, but weak. At 177k miles, it is time to do the replacement of sensor and thermostat anyway. GM parts prices for this and the simplicity of the job are good news.
My 2016 Tahoe had the same symptoms as your Denali. Bought a new temperature coolant sensor and replaced it as instructed in your detailed video. Turned the car on and was still experiencing the same issue and the check engine light was now on. Watched a bunch of videos and in a last ditch effort before taking it to the shop, I disconnected the battery for 10 minutes, cranked it again and the issue is now fixed! I wish I had disconnected the battery to begin with! Thanks for the video and saving me $$$
My mistake was thinking you only disconnected the battery because the fan was running. Didn’t realize it was necessary to reset the system. Thanks again for the vid!
Great video! I called a place called big brand tire and service and asked them how much does it cost to change the thermostat and sensor. They wanted to charge $700 for parts and labor. I ordered the AC Delco thermostat for $50 and the AC Delco sensor for $20. I replaced them myself thanks to your video. Thank you!
I don’t comment, but I have to on this one. Your video saved me a ton of money and walked me through how to successfully change out these parts. The car works and the wife is happy again. Thank you!

Thank you for this instructional video. Had the same scenario as you, wife gets home with the fan running full blast. Was able to get a part quickly and replace the sensor. I didn't initially disconnect the negative battery cable because the fan eventually shut off after about 10 minutes or so. After I replaced the sensor and started her vehicle, the fan started running full blast again as it was before. I almost panicked, but turned the truck off and disconnected the battery. Went inside to let the vehicle be by itself for a 10 or so minutes. And when I reconnected the battery, it was good to go. You're probably suppose to disconnect the battery cable anytime you're rooting around in the engine bay, but I was in a hurry and skipped that step. Anyway, it worked out. And one more thing, being the butter fingers that I apparently am, I dropped the little white clip holder down onto the under engine shield which I had to take partially off to fetch the clip. No big deal, but it was an annoying extra 20 minutes to the job. So word to the wise, hang on to that thing when you remove it. Thanks again.
Correct. You want to disconnect the negative terminal when working on anything so you don’t short anything out, and in this case it also resets the check engine light and code so without disconnecting it, it will still think it has a problem
Thank you for this video. My Silverado was experiencing the same fan issue. The temp sensor and thermostat resolved the issue. Your step by step instructions made the repair super easy. Thanks again. Cheers,

Thanks so much for tutorial. Made me feel confident I could change it after watching your video a couple times. The only hiccup I had was white safety clip broke when I removed, but I was able to salvage it. So far so good!!
Thanks for the great video! I replaced just the temp sensor and it fixed the problem for a few months but then the problem came back. I'd reset the system but pulling the negative battery and letting it reset but the problem would always come back after a week or so. I replaced the thermostat and that fixed it!
Yes, I changed both at the same time but many others have told me the thermostat can be the main culprit. I’ve added it to the video description. Thanks for your feedback and I’m glad you got it fixed!
Amazing video and detailed instructions. I replaced my temperature sensor and after one drive the fans came back on. I am now going to replace my thermostat and hopefully that will fix my problem. Thank you!

@dannyjohnsonsgarage Hi Danny, Thanks for all your videos they have helped me tremendously! With that being said, I have a 2015 yukon denali xl 4x4, and the vehicle is making a vibration "shutter sound" and seems to be under the vehicle. If I had to guess, it seems to be the transfer case? Everything still operates normal, but the sound is loud and annoying. Have you ran into anything like this? Thank you for your help! Justin
Dude thanks so much for this video. Family and I were driving last night and I thought I heard something- was the engine fans kick on full blast. I saw the temperature gauge read ice cold and knew that wasn’t right bc we were driving for a while already. Immediately thought how I’d have to schedule a mechanic to look at it. After a quick search on you tube found your video. Bought the temperature sensor immediately from local oreillys and will be swapping this morning. Thanks a lot man! I am confident your video provided a solution!
I’m glad you found the video. If it continues it may be the thermostat you also saw in the video as it can stick open and over-cool the engine. You might want to look into getting a thermostat to have on hand. Great job fixing it yourself and saving money!
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage hey man curious what you think about this. I swapped the the temperature sensor and then just started the vehicle (cold hadn’t started it since last night). Well after starting the vehicle immediately the fan kicked on. Even after installing new temp sensor. I turned vehicle off and as I type this message the fan is still running with vehicle off, I suspect it’ll run a few mins then turn off. I don’t have and haven’t had any check engine lights. You think just the thermostat could still be the issue? Seems like maybe some other electrical problem. Thoughts?
@@patrickbourgeois6203I’m having the same issue after replacing the sensor. It’s just happens sporadically and the fan stays on while the car is on and some times it goes back to normal. I just watched this video and ordered the thermostat as well, hopefully it will solve the problem.
This worked on my 2015 Tahoe! Great video! I saved myself a ton of money! **Note, my Tahoe was not showing a check engine light and this still worked.**. Thanks for the video!
Ha mine too ...freaked me out . After research I changed the sensor and the gauge came up to maybe 1/3 of the gauge so I changed the theromastat and everything back to normal... talked to an ase mechanic and he said just change both ...one can cause the other to fail .
Grateful for this video while in a Trip to New York from Florida car sensor did the same thing pulled this video and fixed real quick in front of an autozone ! Appreciate men 🙏🏼
Like everyone said you made it a breeze thank you although once I removed the thermastat I just went ahead to the sensor before installing the thermastat
Man! Thank you so much for this video. By far the BEST explanation on a vehicle. I’m not well versed in cars and I was able to do everything perfectly with your instructions. Thank you!!!
Unless the thermostat has failed, you may be able to try just the coolant temp sensor. I think it was all I needed but did the old mechanic “might as well do the thermostat while it’s out.” Good luck. 👍🏼
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage I just replaced the sensor and not the thermostat. Initially there was no change but I drove the car around the block a few times and now it works fine. Thanks again for your help.
cleanest and most clear video I have found on this subject.. earned a new subscriber.. thank you for the effort you put in for clear images and excellent descriptions.
Thanks to this fantastic video, I changed the sensor in 5 mins! Didn't fix the issue though. Changed the thermostat in 20 mins. Still didn't fix it. Any other known causes for the fan to continue to run on full blast even when tahoe is turned off? Check engine light did not come on. Thank you for this video. Perfect step by step guide!
So it seems that I did not test drive it long enough after changing the parts. I guess it needed a good 15 minute drive to work through the system and the temperature came back up and the fan turned off. Thanks again for the video. Saved me a ton of time and money!
What temperature is showing? If it’s still at 0 (shows 160) when you’ve been driving for awhile and it should be warmed up, it still has something to do with the temp sensor (or the wiring on the car side). Other things I checked were the fan relay. A relay is like a switch, so if it sticks on it will continue to power the fan. If the car is, indeed overheating, it may keep the fan on.
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage Thank you for the quick reply. Looks like it's all good for now. The relay was going to be my next step. Thanks again for the awesome channel
This video is amazing. Follow up question. I changed just the temperature sensor, it worked for a couple weeks but the fan is now coming back on. Assume I probably need to swap out the thermostat as well. I’ll give that a try this week and see if it solves it. Thank you!

11/14/24 I thank you for this video had the same problem, but I only replaced the sensor now. It is doing it again no check engine light this time. I’m going to change the thermostat and see what happens.
I just found your channel and I'm having the same problem with my wife's tahoe I'm going to do this repair tomorrow morning. Your videos are so well produced and the way you explain the steps assures me I'm capable of doing it! Can you in the near future do a video on the Yukon of a transmission fluid change ? I'd really appreciate it lol
Thank you for this video. My Silverado V8. 1500 started experiencing this last night and I’m now confident I can tackle this repair after your very well produced video. Do you know if I’ll have to clear any error codes to get the A/C to start operating again? I’ve read and seen videos that this condition disables the AC from working (and mine stopped working at the exact same time the temp gauge went to zero and the fan would continuously run after shut off). Thanks for all the helpful tips in the video. The best I’ve watched on this specific topic. And a Happy New Year.
Danny, I need you expert tootlage on this issue. I have the same Denali as you minus the shade of white. We bought it used four years ago and had three trouble free years until last year. Swapped the air ride for shock and struts, had to replace the faulty ac condenser and get all fluids flushed at the same time plus tranny service. Just two months ago I was taking the kids to school and the dash lit up like a Christmas tree and it went way down on power while the gauges danced around. First trip to the mechanic which was a different one from the suspension one cause they were questionable to find after the fact. So first trip, they “check and clean” the connection of the battery cable from the vehicle to the battery. The one under the dash was good and the one to the frame was removed so they could scrape off the paint on the frame so the connection was metal to metal. Not even a mile from the shop and BOOM, same issue. I go back cause now the fan it on loud and long just like yours in this video. I watched your video and told them to check the Temp sensor and they said, oh no it’s the Thermostat cause we see then all the time. They do not replace the Temp sensor. New to me but whatever, so I go home and next morning, BOOM it’s Christmas morning. Now third trip in a week and they say, well we are going to change the cable cause 99% of the time that fixes the issue. Would have been nice to do that first before the other two useless trips. Two months go by and yesterday my transmission won’t shit out of first or second. I go to O’Reilly’s to scan and it’s a Transmission control module issue along with a computer not communicating code. When I get back in, the CEL went away and it drives like normal. I called a shop that O’Reilly recommended quote me $980 plus tax. Tranny service, gasket, fluid and a new harness which contains the transmission control module plus 4.8 hours labor at $150 per. Basically, the ECM is the main issue right , cause today I was getting every light, dash dancing tranny not shifting but not limp mode. My wife and I want to punt this thing but feel bad for the next owner if we don’t get it fixed for good. It is still in great condition, just paid $800 for brake and front rotors a couple months ago and it has just under 105k on the clock. Should we take the $1k and put it toward getting a new or refurbished ECM installed? I love your videos and it was one of the reasons I bought our Denali cause I found your channel. Sorry the message was long but I wanted you to have the whole story. If you get the end and can reply with your advice up I would appreciate it greatly. I just have not found anyone honest in the automotive world to help me. Thanks Danny.
It does sound like something as simple as a bad ground for the ecm , or possibly a bad harness. As for the temp sensor, you will know if it reads zero (looks like 160) when it’s warm. It should be 210 degrees when warmed up. A friend of mine had similar issues and it wouldn’t shift and his was just a ground for ecm. Usually if something is bad that part fails (like my temp sensor for the transmission). If multiple things start wigging out, it can be a ground for all of them. I do have a harness video for the transmission, and if yours is also the 8 speed you’ll want to watch the video to see which transmission fluid to use and also I cover the different part numbers that allow you to simply change the bottom part of the harness Vs the entire harness, which will save you from dropping the valve body. If you believe it’s a sensor on the harness, you can easily change it yourself for 10% of what they are charging you. It’s hard because there are no guarantees, and the flush could have hurt the transmission. Changing the fluid out is a more gentle solution in the future ua-cam.com/video/PxAeX6dZbCA/v-deo.html

Thanks for all your videos they have helped me tremendously! Justin
Exact same problem I have on my 2015 Chevy Silverado. Thanks for the excellent video and explanation! Thanks
@@welitonsantos5595doing the same! i’m going to get the thermostat tomorrow morning i’ll update you or lol you update me? everything good?
Possibly the most helpful auto repair video I've seen
Thanks David - Your instructions were very through. I was able to perform the Sensor without any anxiety. Cheers. Bob
This worked on my 2015 Tahoe! Great video! I saved myself a ton of money! **Note, my Tahoe was not showing a check engine light and this still worked.**. Thanks for the video!
Thank you for posting this!!! My son and I changed the thermostat and the headlights in the same day thanks to two of your videos. Thank you so much.
Just had this happen this weekend. Saw several videos but yours was the most easy step by step that I found. Thank you.
Ha mine too ...freaked me out . After research I changed the sensor and the gauge came up to maybe 1/3 of the gauge so I changed the theromastat and everything back to normal... talked to an ase mechanic and he said just change both ...one can cause the other to fail .
Great video! Air silencers are for people who hate to hear the sound of anything good happening.
Grateful for this video while in a Trip to New York from Florida car sensor did the same thing pulled this video and fixed real quick in front of an autozone ! Appreciate men 🙏🏼
Like everyone said you made it a breeze thank you although once I removed the thermastat I just went ahead to the sensor before installing the thermastat
you did a superb job in showing and explaining everything related to this job making it look easy,
At 144,000 it just happen to my 2015 Tahoe . Thank you very very much for the Video 🎉😊
Thank you so much!! Your instructions were clear and concise. I fixed the problem in no time and you saved me a ton on the labor.
Man! Thank you so much for this video. By far the BEST explanation on a vehicle. I’m not well versed in cars and I was able to do everything perfectly with your instructions. Thank you!!!
This just happened to me a few hours ago. Came straight to UA-cam and found your video. Thank you
same here, going to change out tomorrow
Thank you for this really clear video! 2015 Tahoe. Installed new temperature sensor and problem solved
If it continues, the gauge may be really reading cold, so it would be the thermostat most likely. Just fyi for the future.
BEST VIDEO INSTRUCTIONS EVER!! GREAT JOB!! STILL SAVING PPL $100s EASY FIX BECAUSE OF YOU!! BIG THANKS!!!! NEW SUBSCRIBER!!!
Bravo. Extremely well done. Worked perfectly. Helped me teach my son lessons of life as well. Thank you for making the video so easily to understand.
Thanks! My Yukon did the same thing for my wife today.... I will fix it tomorrow by following your instructions!!!!
Unless the thermostat has failed, you may be able to try just the coolant temp sensor. I think it was all I needed but did the old mechanic “might as well do the thermostat while it’s out.”
Good luck.
Excellent video! Very well explained and easy to understand. Fantastic camera work as well. Thank you for posting this!
You saved me thousands of dollars. Thank you sir.
you the man thanks. my 2016 Yukon started with the fan staying on
Our Escalade is having the same issue. Excellent video!
Used your video and got my Tahoe back right, thanks 🙏🏾
Same problem no check engine light, it will run the fan on a cold engine right after it is started
Very helpful - many thanks for providing this info in such clear and detailed manner. But 93k view? Chevy sure don't build like they used to.
Thanks, swapped the sensor out in less than ten minutes. Thanks for the video.
Glad it helped
2016 Escalade literally took a poop today.
Thank God you uploaded this video lol
Thank you
Did you changed the sensor and the thermostat? Did that stopped the fan being so loud and after you turned off the vehicle?
@@orodiguez yeah. It could of been just one of the two but I thought I’d do both while I was at it.
And yeah it fixed the issue
@@dailyrevs1320 awesome! Thank you for replying back. Im hoping it will fix the issue on mine aswell.
having the fan issue now. looks like the thermostat and housing may be backordered now so imma try just the coolant temp sensor.
This video just saved me so much time and money. You're the best!!!
Excellent video very easy to follow made the job super easy thanks
You are a lifesaver. Thank you so much for making this video
This video is amazing. Follow up question. I changed just the temperature sensor, it worked for a couple weeks but the fan is now coming back on. Assume I probably need to swap out the thermostat as well. I’ll give that a try this week and see if it solves it. Thank you!
Yes, most likely the thermostat if it’s still a problem
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage Thank you!
Thanks for this posting. The explanation was thorough and easy to follow. Saved me $$$. Thanks a lot.
Great video by far the best, the lighting was great you explained everything I like the explanations about the connectors great great video thank you. I will be doing this later today
Always a great video! And that’s a nice 10mm socket! Still looking for two of mine lol.
Lol! Harbor Freight has a package of nothing but 10Mil sockets! Straight, wobble, extension, regular, etc. They've got em all covered!!
Hey man, thanks a lot for sharing this video👍i just finished fixing my sisters GMC and it worked just the way you said! Thanks again💯
I had this problem and your video took me tire to the problem so thank you!! And I followed you!!
Great video! Excellent job going step by step and showing us everything. Much appreciated! Nice garage, by the way!😊
11/14/24 I thank you for this video had the same problem, but I only replaced the sensor now.
Yes. I actually have one already. It’s for the 8 speed 8l90e on this same vehicle ua-cam.com/video/Bu_isDRd9lI/v-deo.html
This was very very helpful!!! Thank you 🙏🏽
I Truly appreciate you Sir!!!! It helped me so much, excellent view and language was spot on!!!!!!
It's the thermostat guys the sensor is fine.
This video was perfect. Thank you.
Changing the fluid out is a more gentle solution in the future

I'm trying to stay ahead in servicing my '17Yukon5.3L with 70k miles haven't had that problem yet but it seems so easy it makes me want to get it over with 🙄 I just had my tranny and differentials (4x4) serviced at the dealer I'm now missing $850 off my pockets 😆
Thank you!! Perfect tutorial 👏🏻
Best UA-cam mechanic vide 👍
1) I wish every video was this good. Well done sir!
2) while doing this repair, I lost the white clip that snaps down on the connector going into the temperature sensor (the one he uses pliers on effectively). Dealership wants $60 for the whole connector. Anyone know where I can get just the white clip?
Sorry, I’m not sure where it would be for sale otherwise. You might be able to zip tie the plug to the sensor
Help Great video. My issue persists. Same symptoms. Fan stays on no temp reading replaced coolant temp sensor and thermostat. Any ideas. Thx
A “little” lock tight! 😂 great video
This saved my day….Thanks , I will follow!
I have new lifters to install. Stay tuned
Good, informative video. I have to admit - I know it's called a "common" screwdriver. I still am a little shocked I don't hear it called a "flat-blade" screwdriver. Oh well :D
Thank you for the well-made and informative video!
Hello I have the same issue I did not replace the coolant sensor but I will my question is after I changed the thermostat my ac was not working it did not blow out cold air just warm what course cause this thank you in advance any help would be appreciated
Did you disconnect the battery in the beginning? If not it may have blown a fuse for the a/c
LUCKY..I have now replaced both the sensor and the thermostat no change
I think it's the HVAC Control Panel Buttons sticking and causing a short. I've done everything else at this point and problem still exists.
Thank you for sharing! Subbed!
Awesome video brother, thanks!
Great as always.
