Demons capturing a gamer: "Alright mortal, we have created the ultimate punishment! You will try to save these people from hordes of demons, forever!" "Oh that's just Diablo, we play that all the time!"
My words exactly. The Lord of Terror feeds of the fear and terror he and his minions causes. The constant reminder that every moment could be your last and the uncertainty if the dark riders kill you or not if you try to leave the town is what gives him power.
That's a great thought, although maybe theres levels. He certainly had victims below the labrynth... but what if he needed some more subtle terror, too
Nah, people always assume that the forces of hell are on on the same side. But they aren't. None of the demon lords trust each-other. And they really REALLY don't want Diablo back out and in charge potentially to take away their own fiefdom. Most likely, they knew Diablo was there, and they were hoping everyone dies there and no one lets the lord of terror escape. Like any disease, you just quarantine the town, and wait it out. They either succeed and get rid of their problem, or they all die. Either way no more problem.
@@Juan-Dering You are right about the Lords of Hell being pitted against each other. There are constantly-shifting alliances and betrayals. Specifically, Hell's political situation at the time was like this: The Prime Evils (Diablo, Mephisto, and Baal) were concentrating their efforts heavily on the world of Sanctuary, and not paying as much attention to fighting the forces of Heaven. So the Lesser Evils organized a civil war in Hell, resulting in the defeat of the Prime Evils and their ultimate exile to Sanctuary. Once there, the Archangel Tyrael formed the Horadrim to hunt down their spirits and imprison each of them in soulstones. They succeeded in doing this. But all of it was part of Mephisto's evil plan. All of it. He and the other Prime Evils meant to lose the civil war. They planned on getting imprisoned in Soulstones. In the next stage of the plan, Mephisto used his malevolent influence to corrupt the priesthood that was guarding him. One priest in particular, Lazarus, was singled out by Mephisto for a special task. Mephisto inspired Lazarus to travel West to the kingdom of Khanduras, as a missionary. Once there, he secured a position as a trusted advisor to King Leoric. He then convinced Leoric to move the seat of his Kingdom to Tristram. And when Leoric got to Tristram, Diablo was able to get inside his mind and use him to do all manner of evil things. But Diablo was not quite able to use Leoric as a vessel. So Lazarus prepared the young prince to be possessed, instead. Diablo's intention was to possess the prince, free his brothers, then attack Mount Arreat and take control of the Worldstone. So at that point in time, Hell was divided into four parts, each of which was ruled by one of the four lesser evils. They were all quite content to let the Prime evils stay in exile, and fight the forces of Heaven on their own. Meanwhile, on Sanctuary, the Prime Evils had formed an alliance among themselves. If the Prime Evils' plan had worked, they would have assaulted Mount Arreat, corrupted the Worldstone and turned all humanity evil. Then, with the combined might of Hell and corrupted humanity, they would have finally obtained victory over Heaven. Good thing we were there to shut 'em down!

Man, Diablo 1 had something unique: I can't think of another game that had such dreadful and eerie atmosphere. I'm glad I played it when I was 16, if I was a lil' younger I'm sure I would have nightmares for extended period of time.
I first played it at 6 years old... In the middle of the night when my parents were asleep. Wasn't scared of it at all, and didn't really have nightmares of it. I just thought it was cool with all the stuff going on. Childish naivite saved my ass on that one...
For me.. the one game that had a similiar eerie atmosphere was Ecstatica. Even the setup was kind of familiar with the cursed village, religion being a theme and the chaotic, unpredictable nature of the creatures living there.
Funnily enough, Ogden casts shade on him saying: " Pepin is a good man - and certainly the most generous in the village. He is always attending to the needs of others, but trouble of some sort or another does seem to follow him wherever he goes..."
@@AlessandroRodriguez that's because they haven't realised yet that Pepin is secretly implanting microchips in his patients that allow Diablo to observe the going ons in Tristam without being too overt about it. In return, Diablo provides Pepin with a steady source of income by leaving a couple of people alive to be treated. The party must surely have spent a fortune on Pepin. It's suspicious how he never runs out of materials for his potions, no? I'm telling you, big pharma is run by the devil.
Anyone who fights evil, will sooner or later become the evil itself. So the only guy who can contain Diablo within himself, would probably be a very non-attached dude like the Buddha or something, lol. With nothing but the pure void in his consciousness, no terror, no fear.
Diablo and Starcraft. Two precious diamonds from the same company that came out back to back. Endless hours of gameplay. I stole hours from my sleep in order to advance a level in either of these two games and when I was asked by my wife "aren't you tired enough from work", I just smiled and said "Yeah, that's why I play. It is sooo refreshing".

@@pwnmeisterage Grim Dawn is good but the art style is so shitty it doesn't keep me hooked at all. Way too cartoony. If they went with more of a classic aesthetic the game would've been way better.

I agree only if the Diablo II remaster is as phenomenal as it seems to be becoming. If it takes a bad turn like the WCIII remaster, then I might be okay with it staying as is.
Please no , we have a lot on our hands now , and we all adult with responsibilities , no time to invest as 20 years before... Need i also remind you that Diablo 4 is coming soon
I didn’t even know he was in Tristam. I completed the game (3 times), lol, and never had a conversation with this mystery priest. Although, Fleshdoom did sound familiar.
I might be the only person in the entire world who wants this, but I wanted Diablo 4 to be a prequel to Diablo 1, taking place mere weeks or months before the events of D1. You start off in a remote village, tracking a mysterious cult that seems to get bigger and stronger with each new village (act) you come to. Act 4 would end with you leaving the last village, headed to Tristram. The expansion for the game would be a complete remake of D1...you finally make it to Tristram where you must confront the cult leaders and Diablo himself. THIS is the Diablo sequel (prequel) I want...Unfortunately, Blizzard has no interest in looking back at where the series started.
@Radical Reviews I'm sorry who are you and why aren't you leading Blizzard or at least the Diablo storyboard team right now?! The game you describe would be an instant buy for me. Honestly, I don't understand why Blizzard isn't re-releasing Diablo for consoles/PC right now while we wait for Diablo II: Resurrection...I'd buy it. They don't even have to update it and could just port the original as is. Maybe for a cool 20 bucks on XBLA/PSN/Steam. Your idea would fit so well with Resurrection and what's more the new engine is finished. It really shouldn't take much more than what they've already done to make it happen. They could release Duablo II: Resurrection as planned, release Diablo IV as a prequel (your excellent suggestion), and lead us back to the first game where it all started. I personally would love to watch the fall of Tristram and in that new 3d engine, Hell yes! Unfortunately, that makes too much sense and as we all know that simply won't do at Blizzard Land. ;)
I longed for a world of Diablo after d1&2, but i knew it would never happen because it would be so dark and terrifying, so the audience would have to be adults only, and it would take players away from WoW.
"We have all heard the tales associated with Tristram. The very mention of its name brings to mind images of undead monstrosities, demonic possession, monarchy driven to lunacy, and, of course, the greatest legend of all: the Lord of Terror unleashed. Although many now claim that a peculiar mold upon the bread or perhaps a fouling of the water drove the populace mad with visions, I have seen too much in my varied travels to dismiss such stories out of hand."
A few things worth mentioning. First, it's kind of ironic that the image of dark riders gives off a ringwraith impression. Yet, look at any Diablo angel and they give off MORE of a ringwraith vibe, minus the evil. Also, the idea that it was all manipulation, also makes sense. If many rumors are true, the Prime Evils are MASTERS at manipulation. One theory says they manipulated the Lessers into overthrowing them and exiling them to Sanctuary, so they can cause havoc there. Maybe they manipulated the Horadrim into sealing them away, to come back when Sanctuary was most vulnerable. They likely manipulated so many events, that they may have Illuminati-esque control over Sanctuary, plans within plans, backup plans for backup plans, all that kind of thing. So, keep a few townsfolk, so that adventurers come to attempt to slay him, have a place to repair equipment/stock up/eat/sleep, (Let's face it, the latter 2 likely happened, even if they didn't happen in-game), makes sense.
Just so every one know this is Diablo HD it's a amazing mod high-res stash shared stash set items over 250 new unique items and even more classes look it up
I love how we're looking at the canon of a game while using a modded game that further confuses with things like: why is Wirt standing near a building in town?
Or the weird characters I've never seen before like the fat guy with stuff on its back or that dark clocked guy ive never seen before as a npc... Then again I played diablo 1 OG like crazy back in the day till today on occasion... Not modded stuff
You have to also account for the fact that Evil in the Diablo universe is like radiation poisoning. It is incredibly difficult to avoid getting corrupted just by exposure. The entire time that the warrior was descending, Diablo was planting the seeds of the idea in his head. By the time he defeated Diablo, it was not arrogance, but rather "inception" that made him plunge the shard into his own head.
You kinda gotta respect Diablo's hustle even if you do disagree with the means; dude went from a weak host to a strong one via literally gaslighting the hero into thinking he's strong enough to contain Diablo.
The last cinematic, where the hero smashes the soulstone in his forehead, was actually created without the approval of the game design team. They did it because that way it would "close the loop" and allow a new hero would arrive to kill diablo again. They only kept this cinematic because there wasn't enough time to create a new one. If you only look at Diablo 1, there is very little lore. The lore we know today was created for the sequels. But it's funny how the cinematic mistake actually shaped the story of Diablo 2

The art work at 14:39 looks just the what you would get with the wc2 player handbook. Went back and took a second look. It’s the exact same artist ‘Metzen’
Yeap. Metzen's style was prevalent in the first games and what with his GW pedigree, it was cool to see a minor glimpse of what Warhammer / 40k games could have been. Remember the Chaos Undivided brandings on orcs on WC2 artwork?
The towns people left in Tristram when the player arrives more than likely can't leave anymore because like you said diablo was feeding on their terror to regain his strength like a battery and that also explains why they didn't get straight up attacked with the little defense they had because diablo needed them alive to feed
Becouse the town itself was sealed by rocks, small creeks, the townsfolk couldn't move anywhere. I don't even know how the player's character got into the town...

"Please, listen to me. The Archbishop Lazarus, he led us down here to find the lost prince. The bastard led us into a trap! Now everyone is dead...Killed by a Demon he called the Butcher. Avenge us! Find this Butcher and slay him so that our souls may finally rest..."
I wish Blizzard hadn’t cut anything. Some of the cut content seems like it would have been fun. Perhaps they thought it deviated too far from the main story. Your theory sounds pretty good. Thanks Dash.
It´s interesting how many quests were cut from the game and some content of them even used in the Diablo 2. Like Andariel, Pandemonium and the Izual imprisoned in the demon, these things were already supposed to be in Diablo 1. I think that there is a website, Diablo evolution, which describes it. I think that they cut the quests probably due the reason that originally they didn´t plan to add much multiplayer content to the game aside of randomly generated PVP arenas, but as Blizzard then forced them to add more multiplayer stuff and the Battle.net support, they had to spend the rest months of the development on the multiplayer instead on the single player. That would explain why the majority of the quests aren´t in the multiplayer or are cut down just to a boss on a level, which had their separate levels. And also it would explain these cut quests from the single player. The only quest they told that they chose to cut due design reasons was the Map of the stars one, due it would force player to play a certain game style, which they didn´t want to do.
Considering the final product is considered a masterpiece, I’d say it worked out for the best. Yeah, it makes it feel a bit light on content but I prefer it when developers take time to provide a tighter focus to their game than have millions of branches/assets that don’t go anywhere.
The fact that it's possible to theorise about and break down the events in this little town to this degree shows that much more thought was put into this seemingly simple game about going into a dungeon and killing monsters than is sometimes being put into so many big budget games or movies nowadays.
Nope. Adria had nothing written about her in D1 that even kinda hinted at maybe she was on Evil's side. She used to sell the best spells, and magical trinkets.
You know I always had a theory about Tristram in the original Diablo. In the Intro you find a desolate town that's been ransacked, littered with corpses. I think that that's actually Tristram, and the more pristine version you use as your base hub is actually a trauma laden hallucination, meant as a coping mechanism. In fact, in Diablo 2, when you go back to save Cain and you see the town is destroyed and the townsfolk are either dead or undead, I think that's the way it's been since just before Aiden's arrival. Plus Aiden would've known what Tristram was like before the chaos, so he would be capable of hallucinating the town in its pre-corrupted state. Having the cathedral entrance that close to town with all the demons pouring out of it, it never seemed possible for a half dozen unarmed townsfolk to stave off attacks before your arrival.
Wouldn't this theory be disproven by some of the story bits in D3, though? We know Gillian and Adria definitely lived there for a while and Aiden met Adria, otherwise Leah wouldn't have been conceived.
@@rohenthar8449It still wouldn't make any sense regarding the theory. Remember, Cain said he saw and witnessed everything. And wouldn't it be stupid that all lore and quests be provided by mere hallucinations and Cain who's screaming for help is identifying items for the player whilst in a gibbet.
@@danielgeronimo5538 That's why I said, we can only speculate. Example, look at Baldur's Gate where events and story are a lot different than an official canon, which was retconed a few times trough this 20 years.
It's interesting how the lore evolved since the first game. The way they tied it together in the later games was the warrior's relationship with King Leoric and Prince Albrecht. I don't recall if there was any subtle hints that was revealed in the dialogue or not back then since I haven't played it in a while, but it Blizzard did a great job teeing everything together by the third game. Plus, the second game revealed what happened to the Sorcerer and the Rogue. Which made a lot of sense. I always enjoyed this game series a great deal. The way it was told and the evolution of the Diablo Lore really drew me in as both a gamer and a fan of the series. I do wish that Blizzard would revisit the first game and give it a nice make over like Diablo 2 did this year. Maybe update some of Diablo 2's game codes for improvements. Great job with this video. I really enjoyed it.

@@DarkLOREDash ok. I also was wondering what this version was. It looked a mix of pc&ps1 quests with d2 item drop colour rarity and character animations
Thanks for putting all the threads together and answering my biggest question of the cursed town. What would've happened if no one shoved the soul shard in their head? The warrior was too headstrong in the end lol.
Additionally, Diablo is the embodiment of Terror. Wouldn't terrorising people only empower him more? So it's reasonable for him to keep people around. People too scared to leave.
I have a bit of a different take on it, I think that Tristrim was a prison and Diablo could not leave it unless he was in a human host, most likely due to a horodric spell preventing a demon from leaving the city limits but allowing humans to come and go. Diablo tried to inhabit a human to leave town and he failed with Leoric, and the townspeople were not strong enough so he used the surviving people to lure a warrior down... and the rest is history.
Love this stuff man. You are very good at storytelling. So many people don't really know the story of Diablo, as either not many people have played it or just skip the dialog. Great video, I had no idea who tremain was, so thanks for the introduction. As I was watching the video and seeing how deep his quest actually went, I was wondering why it got cut from the game. It became quite evident by the end haha, having that happen to a priest in a videogame back then was unthinkable. There were rumors that after d2’s widespread popularity and when blizzard north were working on diablo 3, the Vatican asked blizzard south to remove any real-life religious references from the game, you know, like crosses and pentagrams, which then became one of the breaking points for blizzard north, who felt those were essential. I never knew if these rumors held any truth, but the fact is d3 did cut all those references, which resulted in a different atmosphere. The story in Diablo 1 is so much better than the sequels because it's so vague. They don't try to explain everything and leave it to your imagination to fill in the gaps which is what creates the mystery/horror. The later games have answered a lot of the mystery created during Diablo 1 by fleshing the story out too much. Same thing happened with the Warcraft/Starcraft lore.

Another reason Diablo left part of the town alive could be to feed off of their terror.
that IS his modus operandi
My words exactly. The Lord of Terror feeds of the fear and terror he and his minions causes. The constant reminder that every moment could be your last and the uncertainty if the dark riders kill you or not if you try to leave the town is what gives him power.
I'm going to say that Diablo, as the Lord of Terror, could not properly enjoy himself unless he had someone to scare. Hence the living townsfolk.
That's a great thought, although maybe theres levels. He certainly had victims below the labrynth... but what if he needed some more subtle terror, too
Diablo feeding on the terror of the townsfolk does seem in line with his aspect, perhaps it made him stronger too.
Different tastes of fear. Like a buffet.
Specifically, Hell's political situation at the time was like this:
The Prime Evils (Diablo, Mephisto, and Baal) were concentrating their efforts heavily on the world of Sanctuary, and not paying as much attention to fighting the forces of Heaven.
Good thing we were there to shut 'em down!

can confirm the nightmares
I first played it at 6 years old... In the middle of the night when my parents were asleep. Wasn't scared of it at all, and didn't really have nightmares of it. I just thought it was cool with all the stuff going on.
Childish naivite saved my ass on that one...
bc of the screaming humans and also monster sounds in the background, combined with the atmospheric music. i loved that
Played it with 9 and it was and still is amazing till this day and all to come. Awesome game, really looking forward to D IV and a great atmosphere
For me.. the one game that had a similiar eerie atmosphere was Ecstatica. Even the setup was kind of familiar with the cursed village, religion being a theme and the chaotic, unpredictable nature of the creatures living there.

@Acácio Brito they would definitely have to retcon D1 if they were to remake it.
@Radical Reviews
I'm sorry who are you and why aren't you leading Blizzard or at least the Diablo storyboard team right now?!
Unfortunately, that makes too much sense and as we all know that simply won't do at Blizzard Land. ;)
That should've been hellfire the expansion for D1.
I longed for a world of Diablo after d1&2, but i knew it would never happen because it would be so dark and terrifying, so the audience would have to be adults only, and it would take players away from WoW.

Man, that trailer for Diablo 2 you put at the end of the video still gives me chills.
Hidden? The whole town are surrounded with walls!
Haha good call
I wonder if Adria actions in Diablo 3 were planned from the very first game, she always seemed to have ulterior plans from the get go.
@@Sakisasvictorianmask In D3 some if not even a lot of lore was retconed, so we dont know the truth, we can only speculate.
Yeah unfortunately, we have a second witness to the events of the first game, which was Cain. His dialogue in 2 disproves much of this theory.
@@danielgeronimo5538 That's why I said, we can only speculate. Example, look at Baldur's Gate where events and story are a lot different than an official canon, which was retconed a few times trough this 20 years.

Tremain probably is a priest for the Church of Rathma. Also, I feel so sorry for Griswald and the others for killing them in Diablo II.

Sad for Tremaine.
The way of your story-telling is so captivating.. I forgot to comment "FIRST!!"
Much love 😍
I'll always loved Diablo saying "don't forget to brush your teeth" backwards
I have a bit of a different take on it, I think that Tristrim was a prison and Diablo could not leave it unless he was in a human host, most likely due to a horodric spell preventing a demon from leaving the city limits but allowing humans to come and go. Diablo tried to inhabit a human to leave town and he failed with Leoric, and the townspeople were not strong enough so he used the surviving people to lure a warrior down... and the rest is history.
What version of the game is this that youre playing in the background? It looks quite nice
what is that last cinematic? i vaguely remember seeing it decades ago, forgeting it ever existed
98 E3 D2 trailer.
That was my first time seeing that cinematic too, how cool. It being narrated from the dark wanderer's perspective.
Your voice reminds me of Camelworks on Elder Scrolls lore and the content is just as intriguing
Thank you! He's a solid dude
Tristram atmosphere in Diablo 1 simply beats every other Diablo games. Best game of the series.
Love this stuff man. You are very good at storytelling. So many people don't really know the story of Diablo, as either not many people have played it or just skip the dialog. I feel Diablo 1 and 2 told a story that wasn't so inset on biblical mumbo jumbo like Diablo 3 is imo, or maybe it's the way they explain it.
I Have been watching his videos and that's absolutely true. I didnt know the Diablo story. Im on Diablo's 2 story now
"Please, listen to me. The Archbishop Lazarus, he led us down here to find the lost prince. The bastard led us into a trap! Now everyone is dead...Killed by a Demon he called the Butcher. Avenge us! Find this Butcher and slay him so that our souls may finally rest..."
I never skip until I know I heard it. The problem is the random dungeon design; there is no telling when you'll find a room with a lore tomb
Today I subscribed to you. Great videos and storytelling. You have a great idea and you're making it so well. Keep growing!
Whenever I think of game aestheticics done perfectly right, the original Diablo is at the top of the list.
When the stakes got higher with D2 and war of D3 the story was watered down and less personal. This is why D1 is the most menacing and intimidating.
Never played d1, but now I think I've missed out some serious nostalgia in the game world of diablo series
If you get it, make sure to try the belzebub mod!
Fictional dialogue: "It’s a dark world we live in these days. Do you mind telling me a joke that’ll relieve me of the stress of the situation?"
One thing here, what Diablo needed most likely is not the incognito to release his Brothers, but a human follower, to break Tal'Rasha's curse.
I think diablo 1 was the most interesting, and most scary, amazing game, music and those shitty (only visually) cutscenes made this game fucking great and terrifying
This was the third PC game I remember playing behind X-Wing and Wolfenstien 3D. This was my favorite though. I played hellfire for a few months until our Compaq computer died. I’ve never seen a lot of this content that you show. From items to npc’s. Straight nostalgia snipe though bud. I love it.
The game he is playing is actually the fairly new "remaster", not the original game. The remaster adds all(?) of the originally cut content, plus backports a lot of features from eg. Diablo 2 into it.
Different is not inherently bad of course, but d3 world didn’t feel like sanctuary at all.
Ah well, can’t wait for d2r to experience that diablo goodness all over again!
Oh wow, that explains the Psi symbol replacing the cross in Diablo 3! Will do research, cheers!
Different is not inherently bad, but D3 was bad. It still is bad. I don't even consider anything in it to be Canon.
@@aztraeuz5560 I hate what d3 did to the lore, but beneath all the poor design decisions was a great engine and a fun arpg. It didn’t feel like diablo, didn’t play like diablo, didn’t sound like diablo, it wasn’t diablo, but I don’t think it was a bad game, not after the ah shut down and ros got released. It is still one of the best arpgs available, after all. I agree it was pretty bad at launch though.
@@drawlast I would argue that it is still bad. It is the worst mainstream ARPG on the market. It is in fact so bad that even after releasing RoS, Blizzard saw how bad it was and completely gave up on it.
@@aztraeuz5560 I see your point, but it wasn’t entirely abandoned as it still got the necromancer and ongoing events. I still don’t think of it as a bad game, you can tell there was a lot of love and work dedicated to that game, and it pains me that bad direction managed to absolutely ruin it.
My fav game ever. I didn't realized some of the things you explain here. I really enjoy going deeper into this masterpiece. Great content man, good job!
Wait, what Diablo mod is that?! Zooming out, different interface... Very cool!
Hd mod. Amazing quality of life upgrades
@@DarkLOREDash Thank you! Going to try it right now!
Crazy how Adria shows up to town to make sure Diablo’s contingency plan works out kicking off the whole series
Straight up groomed Ayden to become the true vessel/seed planter
I remember most of those cut scenes, but there are some I don't ....
I was thinking the same thing. I played Diablo several times, but I must not have triggered them all.
Given that the Khazra used to be human, and that riding is a good way to preserve your stamina before arriving to combat, I find Khazra riders quite believable, even if the stirrups might need modification.
Well we all know why Adria came...and she wasn’t the only one. Brownchickenbrowncow
I remember the first time I wandered into that town. The music, the schwick schwick sound swinging. Wucca wucca when inventory is full.
The real reason is that the game needed a town hub with people to shop and explain the basic story.
wow ur so smart
i’ve always liked these types of games, the angle of the birds eye point of view
My druid found shadowfang in D2, no corruption just freeze damage and other good stuff. Only down side was -2 to light I think.
