For those who were confused about Adria, it was kind of unexplained. She was initially working with the hero and Tyrael and promised to destroy the dark soulstone once it contained all the evils, but betrayed them and used Leah as a vessel to summon Diablo because she was secretely his minion. Source: I just replayed D3.
When I played D1 she was the question of the game because she suddenly showed up on the edge of town and started helping the hero's which was never explained until D3. She was definitely a double agent.
Adria was in love with/worshipped Diablo - she was never truly working with Tyrael and the nephalem. Rather, she was manipulating them into resurrecting Diablo, and Leah was actually conceived from her and Diablo while he took the form of the wanderer from Diablo II (who was the Diablo-possessed hero from Diablo I). That's why Leah was chosen as the form for Diablo to take, she was his(previous incarnation's human form's) daughter(and why Diablo had dem hips). Diablo 4 is my introduction to the series and after the beta weekend I had no idea the story was so good leading up to 4. Thanks for this entertaining lore lesson.
If you can get your hands on the couple books they made, it's worthwhile. They are pretty good Fantasy Books. There are atleast 3, but likely a couple more.
The lore combined with the dark tones, the horror atmosphere and the gameplay really did a lot to make the Diablo series something special and I can't reccomend playing through D1 and D2 enough if you can. And its also kind of why a long time fans have their issues with D3, as unlike D1 and D2 the tone felt more high fantasy out of nowhere. Plus, there was the buggy launch , the simplified gameplay, the twist at the end which had little to no foreshadowing etc. Reaper of Souls was *amazing* tho and bought back a *lot* of good will with how good Malthael was as an antagonist. And D4 definetly seems to be returning to the roots of the series in terms of tone and storytelling at least, so its a good introduction tbh.
Great recap! Was about to lose my mind at 13:03 for a moment. 😂 I usually don't care much for lore in games, but I really enjoy it in the world of Diablo.

While D3's characters are yet to have official canonical names, there are many hints and clues to at least some of their canonical identities: Li-Ming as the Wizard, Valla as the Demon Hunter, Kharazim as the Monk, and Nazeebo as the Witch Doctor. Li-Ming specifically has a lot of references to her in D3, hinting that she is the canonical female Wizard, down to recognizing Isendra (D2's canonical Sorceress) as her tutor.
I just finished Diablo IV's Act IV. It suddenly came to me that I have had very limited contact with the lore of this universe. I played a bit of D3 but it never really caught my attention for long enough to go through the whole story. This is by far the best video I have found on the lore of the universe pre-D4 and I honestly watched through it with huge interest. Well-narrated and written brilliantly. I also found it funny that you put the bloodied wolf's face on the screen in the exact second you said Mephisto since, well, we already know who the wolf is. Great catch.
Thanks, I was hoping you'd make one of these. Honestly I don't know what it is but its definitely a testament to your skill as I've always found your lore stuff fascinating even though I already played the games
idk if anyone has said this already but the heroes in D3 have been named in Heroes of the Storm. This is from the D3 Wiki Sonya (the Barbarian), Johanna (the Crusader), Valla (the Demon Hunter), Kharazim (the Monk), Xul (the Necromancer, though more in its Diablo II version), Nazeebo (the Witch Doctor), and Li-Ming (the Wizard)
The Story in D4 might actually become the best and most fleshed out story, a lot of people like the little we saw in Beta. D4 is going to be a huge game. Basically the size of all 3 previous games. Can't wait to play more of it.
I hope they do well on the story. I don't the like mmo aspect of it, so won't be playing unless someone can convince its worthwhile. If the story is as good as I hope, it may lead me to try it. It's still blizzard though, so even though they've done some pretty great stuff lately, I have the nagging in the back of my mind that they're gonna find a way to screw it up.
Honestly I think we might have the best story to date in D4... What they set up so far in the beta really has me wanting to dive into it to the end to see what happens as opposed to the previous diablo games where it was just a backdrop for monster slaying loot collection, lol.
@@ok-kk3ic Because the story is absolute dogshit and also blatantly set up to sell you 2-3 DLC if you want to see some form of conclusion. It's also retreading the same arcs we have seen in the previous diablo games (Heaven back to not caring, not having learned anything from D3, Dark Wanderer except now it's a woman WOW! etc.), except with more unlikable characters. Additionally there are only two non ingame cinematics, and one of those is the starting one we already know, and the other is just a continuation of an already teasered one. What annoyed me the most was the fact that you see Inarius like two times throughout the whole game and the first time he is very indifferent and the second time he is acting like a whiny retard and dies. Le Mao. I can go on for days. It's evident that Blizzard just does not have quality writers anymore. The only thing they got is quality monetization experts, that meticulously design the game to milk as much money as possible from casuals and blizzard paypigs.
Inarius is not an Arch Angel(but he is one of the stronger normal angels) but otherwise pretty good summary. So far D4 has made it very easy to hate Inarius, and feel for Lilith. That scene with her finding her first born son Rathma(the first nephalem and the first Necromancer) dead was really sad. Her like of “I would of saved your place just the same” hit me hard and then it panned to her showing that she is…the daughter of hatred, you can see the Anger in her face of what she has lost….what was “stolen” from her.
@Dark LORE Dash when you asked a while back whether you continue the lore in diablo 2 and 3, I have told you that by the time Diablo 4 comes out, you would have finished the sum up of the lore of the previous games. You didn't dissapoint. You delivered. Great work there mate
Great video, big fan of D4 moving away from just focusing on diablo himself, there's so many great demons out there and I'm sure Inarius will give us some trouble too
Agreed. I really don't understand all the complaints about it not having Diablo. YES, I KNOW his name is in the title. The devs obviously didn't plan on creating such vast universe with in-depth lore and multiple sequels when they named the first game. Doesnt mean they arent allowed to explore other villains besides Diablo from now on. And ngl, Lilith actually seemed more interesting and complex as a character than Diablo. I'm glad the devs are shifting their focus towards other parts of the lore and I hope they keep doing it. So when Diablo does finally come back, it will have a much bigger impact, and I will so be there for it.
My friend got Diablo 4 for PS4, I have his account on my PS5. When it comes out I told him I would play with him, and he got really excited. Diablo has always been a really big passion game for him. It got him through a lot of stuff when he was younger even up to this day. He has gotten so good that online people think that his modded his games. He hasn't he is just really good with how the games work. So when I found out he was going to buy it digitally I told him I'd download it from his account onto my PS5 and use my account so we could Game Share, and I would play through the game with him. I sat and watched this entire video, just to catch up on a lore I had no right to learn about, just to make sure he was happy.
Awesome video as always mate! Uldyssian was the goat, the guy kicked Inarius' ass and then sent demons and angels alike back to their rooms and closed the doors behind them.
I'm confused about Leah merging herself with the Soul Stone, gaining all seven of the great evils, becoming the Primeval, because the very next scene is Diablo attacking Heaven and Leah coming to stop him with the aid of someone else, after it just said she just absorbed him. I'm lost lol.
@@germangarcia3818 He said that all 7 of the souls were in the stone and that Leah merged with the Stone. So they should be in Leah. But the next scene is Leah and the heroes defeating Diablo in Heaven. I get that he's moving through a multi decade story in a matter of minutes, but it completely threw me off. I hit rewind multiple times, thinking I was missing something lol.
@@ShangaelThunda222 Leah the daughter of diablo was used as a vessel to host diablo's return to the mortal realm via possession. He then absorbs the stone. In that very cutscene where "Leah" fights the angels the Archangel of Valor burns away the flesh of Leah saying "My old enemy, you cannot hide from me no matter what form you choose to wear. Let your true self be revealed, diablo.".
I hope that the Barbarian is the canonical hero/nephalim and that they make the D2 Barb the younger version of the D3 Barb as was originally intended. I'm also curious... is the D4 hero also a Nephalim? And was Rathma alive all this time? I thought he was gone eons ago. The Necromancers (playable class) must not be very happy that Rathma was killed. I mean, they are his priests after all. And since Rathma is the sort of "god" of the Necromancers... can't he be resurrected? lol
With what this Universe shows, Choosing between the Egotistical, megalomaniac, tyrant with God Complex Inarius or a Control Freak tryrant that is Lilith. I'll choose Lilith. Not because what she do is always right, but she's the lesser evil. I mean, one considers to commit genocide on your kind and made a cult of himself... TWICE. Even the cult's gist now shows him that he would Ascend to heaven and leave humanity behind. True "God" for people with brainrot. On the on the other hand, Lilith may be strict but wants you to embrace who you are for better or for worse. All for a better future for your kind whilst guiding you all throughout. Damn the High Heavens and Burning Hell. Lilith is right. Humanity/Nephalems are better off without them.
Idk anything about diablo nor have i played the games, but ill watch this just because my dad plays it tehe :> And also the music played in the back was my dads morning alarm so i used to hear it almost every morning, and it creeped me out.
Phenomenal job putting all this lore together in such a succinct and easy to understand/follow method. I found it very engaging and ultimately interesting! 👹👹👹👹👹 5/5 Diablos!
Took me a day to get to this video. I thought the assassin who was part of the party during Diablo 2 was, canonically, Kashya. This makes gameplay a little weird when playing as the assassin in Act III, as you effectively meet yourself as an NPC. Otherwise, the conflict doesn't present any issues.
Actually was meant to be Natalya, according to one of the D2 devs, which while playing D3 as a Demon Hunter you learned she, through great remorse, joined the Demon Hunters, and fostered one of their namesake sets. It's also believed in some circles that she was the Assassin hired to kill Issendra the Sorceress, and this was her source of sorrow. Interesting lore turn, if at all canon. That last bit is purely speculative.

Every time I see a new video I get hyped. Love the lore, and you narrate it amazingly. Thank You
I grew up playing all the dialog games and you my friend, have taken me back in time. Thank you, great work and awesome voice.
Thanks, I was hoping you'd make one of these. Honestly I don't know what it is but its definitely a testament to your skill as I've always found your lore stuff fascinating even though I already played the games
idk if anyone has said this already but the heroes in D3 have been named in Heroes of the Storm. This is from the D3 Wiki
Sonya (the Barbarian), Johanna (the Crusader), Valla (the Demon Hunter), Kharazim (the Monk), Xul (the Necromancer, though more in its Diablo II version), Nazeebo (the Witch Doctor), and Li-Ming (the Wizard)
This was great. I really did hope we could save Leah, I liked her character. Hopefully we'll find out more in D4
13:06 You got me on that one! Well played.
So glad I paid 24.99 to hear the rest of this story. Wow so amazing
I know the day i played Diablo 1 as a new game out. Who thougt that this village with cathedral would open such a saga and world...
@@MysteryMastery69 they will screw it up. Nothing Activision puts out should be considered.
Idk be prepared to be disappointed
This thread negative af. Yall need some positivity or hope or some shit cause yall lookin sad af rn. Go enjoy something ffs
Lol the negativity culture has their diapers in a twist, it really was awesome, and it will be.
Ty for this. D4 is my first Diablo game
Honestly I think we might have the best story to date in D4... What they set up so far in the beta really has me wanting to dive into it to the end to see what happens as opposed to the previous diablo games where it was just a backdrop for monster slaying loot collection, lol.
Super facts. I fear how sad I’ll be when I beat the game this time knowing how empty I felt when I “ No lifed” the beta and beat it 😂
@@ThisIsSparta300i feel a sense of dread when i get close to the end of any game
Damn this aged like milk
@@Drakkross how so?
The only thing they got is quality monetization experts, that meticulously design the game to milk as much money as possible from casuals and blizzard paypigs.
thanks!! really needed this to start playing diablo 4!
Probably your best upload so far! Great narrative, concise format, and very interesting overall. Also, congratulations on 120k subscribers!
Watching this since I’m going into Diablo 4 as the first Diablo game I’m playing.
These medium length lores are absolutely phenomenal
Thanks for the video 👍🏻 no unanswered questions left in my mind of Diablo lore
I love that you incorporate Metzen's art from the game manuals.
I just started getting into the Diablo lore (over these last couple weeks). Have never played the games. This is a great vid for people like me :D
I can't wait to fight side by side with Lilith. I'm curious how powerful we'll be when we find all Lilith status.
inarius will kill lileth once and for all.
I'm having so much fun playing the game. We're intentionally dragging it out to find all the fun stuff before we finish the first time
Well done! Your hard work putting this together shows.
Awesome video as always mate! Uldyssian was the goat, the guy kicked Inarius' ass and then sent demons and angels alike back to their rooms and closed the doors behind them.
OK.
But why do all the 'lesser evils' in D3 have nipple rings? What's the canonical reason for the pierced nips?...
I was about to throw my phone through the nearest wall at the mention of 24 dollars. You got me good.
I thought he said the the stone merged with aiden
@@actionbash2 Thank You
This is what I've waited so long for, the story of all things diablo told.
And since Rathma is the sort of "god" of the Necromancers... can't he be resurrected? lol
Rathma can be a very interesting character. I hope they do something else with him. Shame to just kill him off right after you find out he's alive
Damn, as an adult who barely had time to buy D4, this recap brought memories and satisfy my nephilim needs
You had me at $24.99
Recently played diablo 3 but havent finished reaper of souls yet, never the less, this is gonna help alot going into diablo 4 to understand things
Sounds cool, can’t wait for a simpler version so I can actually understand the lore a bit better
you cant get simpler then this...
I only really played the original diablo and a little bit of 3 and had no idea there was so much lore
Go Dad!
Brilliant video, nicely told-adds to my gameplay to have this broader lore context, thank you!
Phenomenal job putting all this lore together in such a succinct and easy to understand/follow method. I found it very engaging and ultimately interesting! 👹👹👹👹👹 5/5 Diablos!
I just bought the ultimate edition. I’m less than two weeks I can finally level a character that doesn’t get erased! 4th times a charm!
I love how, in the thumbnail, Baal just looks like a very happy camper.
I absolutely love your narrator voice/accent/affectation. You are an awesome storyteller.
Kerrigan, Sylvanas( before all the mess with bfa and shadowland) , Lilith... Blizzard knows how to create good female antagonists
Perfect timing on this Upload. I just replayed diablo 1 and 2 to hype myself up for d4 🤣
As someone just jumping into D4 blind this is much appreciated
Tristram music 23 years later is still so soothing and enchanting.
Easily the best lore/story up til now video I have watched getting ready for D4.
"you can not judge me, for i am justice itself!"
boy o boy does that cutscene hit me in me jimmies
Awesome thank you for this video. I just started Diablo 4i got it in the Series X bundle!
That helped a lot. Thank you for your incredible storytelling.
The video is 1 month old, the game hasn't come out yet
I will stay awhile and listen to this.
One of your best videos yet. Looking forward to your in-depth D4 lore videos. Keep up the good work!
This is everything I needed - Well done!
Just bought the 3 Sin Wars books on audible during a sale. Can’t wait to dive into them!
Thank you for the video, it was excellent. I enjoyed your diablo immortal paywall joke. Cheers.
Happy to hear the first Diablo music track in the back ground 😂😂😂❤ that's a relief am not alone 😢
Bro that was an epic jab at Immortal. 👏 👏 👏
i can't put in words how uncredible it's your work.
Thank you for this.
Glad you're back! My wife and I love listening to your videos before bed!
Having just finished d4 before watching this. This clears up so much information. Great vid
That joke in the middle about payment though, hahahaha love it
Watching this stuff makes me really happy. Thank you.
i wanna see diablo return, he was a beast
Fkit..I've subbed. Cheers dude. Been sendin your vids to the others as we get closer to diablo4.
I can very much recommend his videos about Diablo 1. There are tons of lore and stories in the game which are very easily missed.
Your voice sounds like you were hired from Blizzard itself. Nice work man!
Thank you so much for this video I only played Diablo 3 and was so lost so I appreciate the great work you have done here keep up the great work
10:56 triggers my Duriel PTSD
(Also RIP Emilio)
The 24.99 caught me off guard 😭
