that "orange peel" paint is pretty common these days actually. I've had several vehicles from multiple manufacturers that all had it. It's extra thick paint with texture to protect from rock chips and also to help mask any scratches or anything you get from road debris. Surprised you haven't seen it before honestly.
If everyone just agreed on two tone and rocker panel protection, we would all have something like truck bed liner below the axle centerline, that way they wouldn't have to spray the pain on extra thick down down there
Man i hate all these new vehicles with their electronic push buttons, stop start, cameras, sensors, driving assist, tailgate assist etc. Just want a simple vehicle with a new improved powertrain.
I started to rebuild a 1988 Ford Bronco 5.8 v8 it has power windows and a basic speed cluster removable top .. factory suspension fits 33s. I’m spending 10k on parts 10k on painting . Still cheaper than anything new.
Hi Brad, yes, the orange peel area along the rocker panel is an extra thick/undercoat textured/painted area to better stand up to rock chips. All Gen 5 4Runners have the exact same thing, including mine. It works! Thx for the vid review!
I’ve been saving my nickels for the 2024 TRD Pro (before all the specs and price was announced) and I just can’t do it. Few grand more gets you in a heavy spec full size, now I’m looking at the sierra AT4 such a beautiful truck for around 5k more
Hood flutter is one of those things that probably won't affect the truck in any way. But it makes you wonder what else they cut corners on. And it's front and center everytime you drive it, so pretty annoying.
That hood fluttering is an understatement. One of the guys in the local group has spoken to the dealership about fixing it or suing them to take it back, since he he’s on the hwy daily for work.
As a longtime Toyota loyalist and current 3rd Gen Taco owner, I’ve always enjoyed the Jeep perspective of Trail Recon. I hope Brad doesn’t go all-in on Toyota’s.
Brad makes two nice videos about Toyota and he must be getting paid? Come on guys 😂 Most Jeep or Toyota guys who actually use them like and respect the other. I love seeing Jeeps on the trail and I’ve always gotten complements on my 4R from them.
Toyota has always had the peely chip guard on the bottom of the doors. The only thing that ever bothered me about it was they spray over it sometimes before its fully cured. And it bleeds into the lighter colors. In the sun the bottom of the doors on my cement gray tacoma looked pink. And on white it turns yellow. Theres also some examples of cavalry blue trucks online that look almost two tone.
That orange-peel look is an undercoating toyota uses in very chip and stone ejection prone areas. I do agree it’s way more noticeable on some then others but on my 4Runner I appreciate it here in the Chicagoland area and our nasty winters! Great once over thanks Brad!
Im a toyota fan boy, ive owned many 90s 4runners and an 09 tacoma, i was also a toyota/lexus master technician. I drive a gladiator now. The new tacoma and tundra seem to have lost the barebones truck recipe that put toyota on the map for reliability. However, I do believe they will sort out the issues, but they are too technologically dependant IMO. The gladiator and nissan frontier are the only basic v6 no frills mid-size trucks left.
@@JacobD596 I'm loving it so far. I've got about 2500+ on it now since buying it July 3rd. He paid 46k out the door and doesn't have anywhere near the feature set I've got (I paid 48k out the door) but features aside, base truck to base truck they are shockingly similar
@@JJsGA thats awesome! I'm happy you love it. I traded my 16 4Runner on the gladiator. The 4runner was more comfortable for sure but the tech was lacking and it wasnt nearly as good offroad.
If I was to do a rig build over again I think I would have started with a Sport model on any vehicle I was thinking of, and then custom upgraded all the components to what I really wanted to have for an off-road vehicle. Nice review Brad!
Very happy with my new Colorado Zr2 and I saved over 10k buying it instead. Front and rear lockers 3 inch lift with 33s from the factory. Been down black gap trail in Big Bend and handled it easy. Headed to Canada next Saturday from here in Texas for a 2 week trip so looking forward to some mountain trails
Enjoyed this video very much, not enough to go back to a Taco though. I’m on my 6th Toyota 4x4 vehicle (20244Runner) and it has the exact hood wobble that your’s did. Never had that on my old Tundra’s or Tacoma’s I’ve owned. Great content as always Brad!!!
Toyota has always done that "Orange peel" coat on Tundra and Tacoma for many years. Suppose to be thicker for rock chipping but the paint is soft anyways and it just goes through it.
Evan "Iron Man" Stewart, a legend in the Baja 1000 Arenas. I got to say hello to him many times when we were living right down the street from him in Lakeside, CA. He lived on the corner across from the elementary school. He would drive one of the trucks he had down the street hauling ass. We would be right there on the side of the street and he'd wave at us driving by, sounded so awesome...agh the good ole days. I remember one time, he was fucking hauling ass down the street and the Sheriff were there. They just waved because they knew who he was. He'd take his truck up behind the old junior high school up on the mountains there. During classes, we'd see him up there behind TDS and he'd be doing burnouts in the dirt up on the hillside there. Great memories of him, his boys were awesome too. We used to tell his kids that whenever they had the trucks outside, we'd watch over them. I mean, we were kids back then, what could we do. We'd sit on the curb outside their house on the side street hoping to hear Ivan Rev up that engine....he never disappointed. Thanks Brad for pointing out that edition of Tacoma in Ivan Stewart's name. We had alot of fun watching him race up and down the street and him letting us watch him work on his trucks.
The outside of the door bottoms are purposely painted to with-stand rock chips and slight damage from road debris. A friend who own a body shop informed me of such.

I do like the fact you can get a manual transmission. I am not a Tacoma guy. I was always under the impression the TRD Sport was tuned to the road. That is why you don't have some of the off road stuff on the Sport. Bigger tires......what did they do to calibrate the speedometer and odometer to match the tire size? I don't like that tailgate open/close.
Why no rear locker? I like the upgraded wheels, tires and suspension setup but no rear locker. Doesn’t make a lot of sense why you would upgrade those and not add a rear locker, kinda defeats the purpose of the other upgrades
Because it's the sport. You gotta go up to the TRD Offroad for the locker and skid plates. Plus the offroad and pro have a better version of ATRAC and MTS
Nicely comprehensive review, Brad, thank you. I didn't know that the Sport could be so capable, because I had assumed it was 2WD. When the new generation of Tacomas was announced I was very tempted by the option of a manual transmission -- the 21st century's ultimate anti-theft device. Living in Washington, D.C. the anti-theft/anti-carjacking dimension of a manual is very appealing. But I won't buy the first year of a new model or redesign so went ahead with the 2nd year of the other redesigned Toyota truck: the Tundra. Oh, my -- could not have imagined that the first Toyota I'd own would become synonymous with a decline in Toyota quality. Mine was built late enough that it is not in Toyota's recently announced recall of 102,000 engines so maybe it dodged that bullet. Maybe not. Meanwhile, all its components are covered by Geico's "Mechanical Breakdown Insurance" -- financial protection I became aware of when looking at Jeep Gladiators a few years ago. I adore my new Tundra Limited TRD Off-Road -- by far the the most capable, fast and comfortable vehicle I have ever owned. But am also keeping my '04 Honda Element, which is a great city car as well as ode to simplicity of days gone by. On that note, would love to see Toyota take on Ford's little Maverick truck -- something truly small and very basic.
nicely modified gen4 without excessive wheel poke! that motorized tailgate would drive me nuts though, and one more thing that can fail in the long run.
Ha! I also had a 13" TV in my room as a kid. GREAT video on the Tacoma Sport! I haven't seen anyone else post this and i can't imagine if they did it may not have as much detail. Cheers!
The push button tailgate is simply an example of “enough is enough already”. I’d say 1/3 of the options of ANY vehicle these days is just too much and not really needed. Just my opinion though. It’s worth what you paid for it. 😂
Great video and feedback 👍 👌. I have a 2nd gen Tacoma TRD Sport and I love it. Great to see you in a TRD Sport. Hope you get to keep it and so some overlanding with it. I enjoy your videos even when you are in a jeep lol
Tailgate is a little bit of a gimmick. It is kinda nice when youre getting groceries and ive been getting used to it. Ive been loving my offroad, have 35s and kings coming. Nice to see you get after it a little and give an overall positive review.
That orange peel is a flexible coating of paint protection Doc !!! The price is what really kills the Tacoma especially when you step up into the higher models, You're reaching $70k for a Midsize

Hey Brad, I saw you the other day on Nordahl & the 78. I was in the Bronco. The new Touota offerings are pretty cool. However, the Tacoma is 10,000+ in markup over last year. Thats a steep increase, year over year. The new Land Cruiser is pretty spectacular though.
Maybe that's what the owners manual says, although I didn't check. But if this truck was stuck in the mud, where would you attach a strap to in the front to pull it out?
You should have asked to review the TRD Off-Road because the Sport doesn't have the off-road bits like a locker. Looks like a nice truck otherwise, for the price it had better be.
I have a '22 Tacoma I cannot stand the safety gadgets they put on it, when I have the cruise control on if there is a vehicle ahead making a turn in their turn lane my brakes jam on before I begin to pass.
Great video as always, Brad! I'd be curious to see you do a review of the new Nissan Pro4X! It's neck and neck with the Toyota ProTRD, and #1 in reliability and resale right now. The styling of both are awesome. Who would have thought we would have these choices in small trucks? Not too long ago everyone stopped making small trucks, and now they are back in full force. The reviews on the Colorado\Canyon are very good too.
You'd be hard pressed to find any overlanding video with toyotas above forrest road driving that there isn't a broken shaft or other mechanical breakdown. They aren't what they used to be
The screen size is nice but they are getting too large. With the worry of distracted driving, I’m really surprised at how much bigger the screens keep getting.
Hey Brad, I was on Interstate 5 North a few weeks ago and your 4 door Silver JK passed me but did not look like you driving. Just wanted you to know in case you can't find your Jeep.
As an Aussie reading some of these comments regarding the 'weakness' of Toyotas, I can but sympathise that our American brothers and sisters can't easily purchase the legendary solid-axle 70 series range, nor - it seems - the small/mid 'unbreakable' Hilux. Our conditions are the 'real-est of real' when it comes to the necessity for reliability and utility. Down here, while not everyone is a Toyota fan (and fair enough)...their toughness, range and reliability is not even a matter of debate. Sure we have good-natured jokes at their over-simpleness (farm-trucks Ha!) and less than stellar articulation. But never their epic durability. Case in point: our remote (and in Aus...that can literally mean hundreds and even thousands of miles from asphalt) ranger, emergency rescue and fire fighting vehicles are invariably Toyotas. Are their North American 'cousin' vehicles really so removed from that DNA? From my perspective it's interesting to read...another benefit to loving Brad's channel!
Been driving Tacoma trucks for 20+ years. Hard to think I will buy one of the new models. The SR5 Prerunner I bought last was 35K and now they are over 50k. Will look elsewhere for that kind of money.
Thanks again for another great video and product review. That is a cool little truck. I really like the look. However, that hood movement and the muddled paint on the lower segment is a bit disappointing. I have that same tire size on my Jeep Wrangler with a leveling kit and 1.5 inch spacers and I'm very happy with them. Especially after installing a set of Bushwhacker fender flares! This truck is full of bells and whistles which are great for most folks but its not my cup of tea. Don't get me wrong, it appears very capable but I fear all those things creat more opportunities for something to fail in the middle of nowhere (which is where i like to go 😊).
Should I buy Jeep or Bronco? For a first time owner, wanting to use it as a daily driver and for the occasionally off roading adventures with some overlanding. Its just me and my dog
I have a friend who is a service advisor at a Toyota dealer, he said these WILL have transmission problems down the road (he’s already seen some around 80k miles go out and the (100,000 +) tundras have long block issues that we’re assembled in San Antonio.
Great review. I’m a Toyota fan. I have a 2017 Tacoma and my wife drives a nice 4Runner. Was the suspension as clunky in person as it sounds in the video?

Ya, dealer markups really stink! Vehicle today are already expensive and to add on $10k makes them out of reach for many folks.
My 2006 taco has the same paint change at the same spot.
That "tow hook" is actually a tie-down point for transport on a tow-truck. It's not meant for vehicle extractions.
Maybe that's what the owners manual says, although I didn't check. But if this truck was stuck in the mud, where would you attach a strap to in the front to pull it out?
Good looking truck with the lift and tire/wheel combo. I can see paint/cracking issues down the road with the way that hood shakes though.
Putting that suspension to work i see
You should have asked to review the TRD Off-Road because the Sport doesn't have the off-road bits like a locker.
They aren't what they used to be
Those are acoustic front fender liners designed to minimize tire noise. They are quite common on newer vehicles.
Great review Brad !!
Thanks!

Wow. The sound of that 4 cyl purr... Lol and how much is that thing?
Sorry. You may have mentioned it in the video but are you on Black Mountain?
Should I buy Jeep or Bronco? For a first time owner, wanting to use it as a daily driver and for the occasionally off roading adventures with some overlanding. Its just me and my dog
@TrailRecon
I have a friend who is a service advisor at a Toyota dealer, he said these WILL have transmission problems down the road (he’s already seen some around 80k miles go out and the (100,000 +) tundras have long block issues that we’re assembled in San Antonio.
I was waiting for your review on this thing lol
Great review. I’m a Toyota fan. I have a 2017 Tacoma and my wife drives a nice 4Runner. Was the suspension as clunky in person as it sounds in the video?
That's rock guard. Does the Camburg Suspension add a bump stop up front?
It is actually the worst time to move to Toyota.
I wonder if some strategically applied expanding spray foam might solidify that jiggly hood!?
Man, you guys are brutal. Many vehicles out there. All are different and they all have different price points. Those looking for a 4x4 have numerous choices.
That is a nice color.. love these new 4th gen.. don’t care about all these trolls claiming Nissan this ford that. Go buy your Nissan your Chevy or ford nobody cares it’s your money lol..
Not that everyone will want to spend the money on a “wrap”, but wrapping the hood has been reported to dampen the flutter.
Brad are you wearing your jeep shoes 👟 in that Toyota 😂 🤣
I like your channel. What do you think about GWM Tank 300?
