The main issue is that the truck is $7k-$14k overpriced depending on the trim. You can get a lot more midsize truck for a lot less from the competition.
Why do people buy Toyotas? Reliability and affordability. Period. Toyota has managed to blow up both of those with this round by making a product that's super technophile and complex.

Toyota doesn't care much about reliability any more... they know that people believe they are reliable, and they can coast on that for 5 or 10 or more years and people won't realize if its changed. Once you lose that reputation though, you cannot get it back very easy
Hate to break the news to U, but all cars started using computers over 50 years ago. Everything on gas vehicles runs on electricity. And it takes electricity to run gas stations and to pump and pay for gas.
... and the Tacoma is built entirely in Mexico where Toyota pays its employees as close to nothing as it can, yet they charge an outrageous amount of money for these compromised vehicles whose manufacture puts no revenue back into the economies of countries where people purchase the vehicles. Is it even possible a Mexican autoworker will ever be able to afford a Tacoma? Not for what they're getting paid. The Interiors of these vehicles are (in my opinion) quite a bit cheaper with lighter construction, and I haven't verified this myself but I've being told the rear bumpers are welded right to the frames, so owner modifications & accident repairs will be much more complicated and expensive to do. In my mind all these issues demonstrate Toyota's change in respect for both its employees and customers. The number of apologists here is surprising because it's pretty blatant, but I for one am extremely disappointed with what I see as Toyota's complete change of philosophy. Maybe I'd feel differently if I were a shareholder or paid contributor, but I'm just a loyal, longtime Toyota owner who would like to retire someday with a late model Tacoma but suddenly can't afford one anymore. To be fair I'm doing Ok saving for my retirement, but buying a new Tacoma at these insanely inflated prices is a financial management test for each and every one of us. It's a poor & even foolish decision for anybody who doesn't have a fortune in disposable income to pay for one of these depreciating assets the way they are now. Considering all the plastic under the hood I can't see how they're going to maintain their reliability, last as long, or hold their value as well as the older, more durable ones did. The problem is the only justification for it being so much more expensive than the previous gen, is “everything’s more expensive now”….. that’s it. The engine should be cheaper. Building it entirely in Mexico is cheaper. Yet it’s like $10K more lol.
The Taco engines are made in Huntsville, Alabama then sent to Mexico and installed. Some Taco's have been assembled in Mexico since 2004 and in 2019 all Tacoma assembly was moved to Mexico.
Its not that black and white, labour is only a fraction of what goes into manufacturing and development costs. The tooling , overhead, R&D all will still be expensive. This was a complete ground up redesign. 1st year startup costs will be high. The engine is more high tech than then old one. You lost 2 cylinders but added a turbo, more oiling, more cooling, more piping. Its all around a more expensive truck to build just at a glance
Build quality is not looking great. My Gen 2 is still 100% solid and silent on and off road. Panel gaps are consistent. Maybe they'll do the Kaizen thing with the Gen 4 and it will get better. But initial reports aren't good.
I think the Tacoma’s biggest problem is their price points. The TRD Off-Road is $54k, with the 14inch screen. That’s close to Ranger Raptor & Colorado Zr2 pricing & those are better equipped trucks. The Tacoma TRD Pro is $66k, which is the price of decently equipped full size truck. The Tacoma looks great but it’s too expensive
A 54k off road has just about every option you can get. That is probably less than 10% of the off roads sold. The average price of off roads on lots based on current inventories is 47K. You can keep repeating 54K but that does not mean they all cost that. You can get a Colorado ZR2 Bison for 66K but that doesn't mean they all cost 66k. I don't want a full size truck regardless of how little it costs.
@@apt62 I think it shows true Toyota buyers prefer reliability over more power. The 3.5L V6 was not a powerful engine but it was tried and tested. I know as a Toyota buyer, I prefer the 3.5L V6 over the twin turbo 4 cyl engine even if it's faster and more powerful.
@@apt62 the new Tundra engine has been recalled due to main bearing failures. It's a major problem and Toyota recently sent out a letter about it. At the moment, they don't have a fix for it. Many are saying it's a design flaw. Toyota messed up big time with their "more powerful and efficient" engine.
With all manufacturers raising the prices of trucks, we the public can force the cost down by not buying them! When there is a couple of years of inventory sitting there, basically rotting away, you will see them go way down!
There are a lot of people who know nothing about the changes or anything going on. They don't understand engines or anything... they just know "Toyota = dependable" and they will keep buying them.

I just got rid of my 2022 crew cab sport. Moved to a crew cab f250 long bed. The taco was never a real truck anyway. Too small no good on long trips no towing power no need for most features. Overpriced. Never again.
You obviously don't know how inflation works. After it went up really high now the rate at which it's growing is only 2% but it went way up and how's that come back down and the crisis haven't come back down. Go try to buy anything

I recently purchased a 2024 TRD Sport. It does everything my 2017 did... But better. It pulls a trailer better. And I can plow my long driveway better than my 2017 did. I'm a very happy customer!
He paid way too much money for a 20 year old truck. Frontier pricing is even stupider than the Tacoma and it's literally just a cosmetic refresh and a slightly newer engine on the 2005 truck

The biggest problem and the one 99% of people agree, which is absolutely the truth is the crazy price jump that is not justified for a vehicle who is now made in Mexico with a 4 cylinder. I always take screenshots of vehicles I build online and I love the TRD OFF-ROAD and for 2022 it was $40k and now $50 for a truck that we all know it won’t last as long, period. The price, the price. Also, it will have problems
People are not getting it. The price went up because the government eroded the value of the dollar so bad over the past 4 years. It’s called hyperinflation for a reason
They can't do that because of EPA regulations. They sell small work trucks overseas but they're illegal to sell here. Look into it. Basically, vehicles are required to have a certain mpg for each weight, but the ratio the EPA set is skewed in favor of heavy trucks, basically making it impossible to make a light pickup with a decent amount of power.
The biggest problem with the new Tacoma is the price. All the reviews I've seen of the new Tacoma give it great reviews, except for the price. Toyota needs to take 5-7k off the price if they want to sell these in any number that will compete with Ford or Chevy.
Remember when the 3rd Gen Tundra (TTV6) came out in 22 and many said it looked like a solid engine? This 4 banger turbo engine scares the crap out of me. Like you said time will tell but I sure wouldn’t gamble on this for 3 or 4 years 😬!
Why? They are giving you more than before. Way more. Each trim includes more stuff than in the past. You just have to suck it up and instead of getting a TRD Pro and TRD Off Road would be more than enough.
@Marbind the SR5 is a base model and in many places it's going for 39-42k and that's for the 4x2 . It's a base model bascially plus it has a 4 cylinder engine not a v6 . It doesn't have leather interior, it doesn't have premium sound , it doesn't have heated seats, like everyone else has been saying it's way over priced for what you get .

This vehicles were cheap in the past because they didn't had many of the stuff that are offered today as standard equipment. Add inflation to the mix in where vehicles are in general way more expensive than a few years ago. BTW the 4cyl found in the SR5 is more efficient and powerful than the outgoing V6. You rant is baseless.

You got many people all over online in forums, UA-cam saying the same thing . Alot of people are saying the frontier is the better value for the money and at a lower price .

All the money Nissan put during the development of the current frontier generation was at a time that prices in general were way lower than today. Same with the Ridgeline. Honda decided to keep using the same old 2017 model in their most recent launch. Wait until Nissan/Honda releases a redesigned model and be amaze with the higher prices. Chevy and GMC pickups went up too because of this. Top of the line Colorado or Canyon is on the 60s.

$43k .... for a stripped out truck that doesn't even have cruise control, the only reason it doesn't have crank windows is because they would be more expensive. The TB is a truck where you're so desperate to get big tires that you're willing to sacrifice even the most basic creature comforts. Better off buying a Z71 and slapping a small lift on it.
I had a 2020 TRD Off-road long bed with the premium package and a pretty much every option available. I bought that for $42K at 0% interest. There is no way that this model should be in the 50s. They should be in the low 40s as best.
Frontier, Colorado and Ranger are all cheaper when you compare similarly equipped models. At least 6k and that's before the hybrid is added which will add another 3500.
The Frontier is priced higher than the Tacoma. Nissan thinks that 20 year old polished turd is worth the highest MSRP in the class at comparable trim levels.
I like my truck basic, simple and reliable. When I learned about the overkill tech and the 4 banger engine, I purchased the 3rd gen 2023 trd pro. Very happy with it. We enjoy your reviews. Thanks.
You can get a Nissan Frontier Pro-4X for $46,000 and under. It still comes with a NA V-6. Not even a competition. Nissan is a better value for the money and piece of mind
Yes but the frontier is slow as dog 💩 running down hill on a hot summer day. It also has egregious payload number. A slow tranny reaction time and super out dated tech. The turning radius is absolutely abysmal along with an awkward heavy steering wheel feel.
I have a 2023 Frontier P4x, I love it. I am in my early to mid 60's, 6'2 260 lbs no issues, leather seats and good comfort for me, plenty of power and torque. plenty of head room and leg room. P4X rides fine, even better now cause I had new tires installed, Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac RT in 265 70 17, Hankook AT sucked.
In the early 1970's I asked my Grandfather why he always bought trucks. He said a new truck cost only 2/3rd's of a new car and they are more useful than a car, too. How things have changed.
My one-and-only complaint about the Tacoma & 4Runner is the pricing. Period. I have zero issue w/ a turbo 4... zero issue with *where* it's built... like the way it looks... etc.. The beginning and end of the reason I dropped it from consideration and went with a '24 Colorado ZR2 instead is the price/value. The ZR2 is a MUCH better value for money... and, IMO, looks great.

At that price Toyota can bite me. No fucking way for a 4 banger and a mid size. They even cheaped out on the offroad model and put plastic skid plates on it that are so thin they bend in the wind.
You can get the Nissan Frontier which has a NA V6 for less. Heck, even a Ranger Raptor is less than a Tacoma TRD Pro and Tacoma Trail Hunter and has a V6.
I wanted a new tacoma but went with a Nissan Frontier Pro4X for several reasons... the Nissan has V/6 and price wise is a lot more reasonable. I've previously owned 2 Tacomas but felt I had no option in buying a 2024 Tacoma. The Frontier reminds me very much of my 2021 Tacoma. So far I'm happy with my purchase but kind of sad that Toyota has gone down this road which appears to be a disaster!!
I have a Ridgeline as my service truck it has been great and it rides like a car - I am going to buy another one next year - I don't want to deal with turbos
I have a 2024 off-road Tacoma. I like the 2.4, gobs of torque. I like the new seating position, the new transmission, the beefier frame, the multi-link rear suspension. Much improved over my 2020 Tacoma.

I love the new Tacoma. But the price tag is an insult to anyone with an IQ over one. 60-70k for any vehicle is absurd. Tacoma vs Tesla. Hmm. It used to be that price range was for Suburbans. This is not a sustainable trend. Couple this with the QA issues, you begin to see that Toyota is gouging customers. If you can afford a 70k vehicle, what is 100k for a Porsche or Rolls Royce.

Wait for engine issues with new tacomas just like it happened with new gen tundra. At the end of the day, it's 4 cylinders turbo charged engine with a lot of plastic and made in Mexico. Oh 55k to 75k for mid size truck... no thanks. Toyota can keep all these junks. We ain't buying it.
I have always bought a Toyota truck over the last 20+ years. I can't afford a Tundra so in 2021 I leased my first Tacoma TRD Extended Cab. I loved the truck and all its features but to be honest it was cheaper to lease the new 2024 then to buy the old one. This one is an SR5 Double Cab with the upgraded JBL sound system and sliding rear window etc. I have had it for 2 months and 2000 miles and I love it just as much as I did the last one!! In case you haven't noticed everything has gotten way overpriced. Say what you want but I believe this is still the best made truck in its class!! I'm looking forward to driving this one for many years to come.
I’m a truck driver and notice what I see on the road every day. I see TONS of the new Frontier driving around! I also have noticed that I see a lot of the first generation Titans. I’m not a Nissan fanboy by any means, but I’m beginning to be.
I bought a 2024 Tacoma off-road. My fuel economy is not much better than my 2017 I had. The ride is not as nice as my third GEN was. I wish I would’ve kept my 2017.
My 2024 off Road sounds like a Dyson vacuum. It’s lost that truck vibe. Lots of hard plastics that scratch easily inside. Quality control of the fit and finish all over is poor. I should have not been in such a rush to buy it.
My 2017 trd sport with 75,000 miles will probably still last longer than any of the 2024's. Don't blame mexico, mine was assembled there, it's just poor decision making and bad design. I expected more from toyota. Oh ya! And really, a ten gallon gas tank! WTF!
Ben, you're trying to do some sort of cover up for Toyota. People who buy TRD Pro and Trail hunters are very rare. You rarely see TRD Pro trucks on the road. Toyota's bread and butter are SR5 and off road. The sales are down 59% in the Q1. As of June 2024, they're below 1/3 of their normal sales numbers. Instead of selling 275k in 2024. Toyota will be lucky to sell 150k in 2024. They need to do massive discounts.
I get way better gas mileage in my 24 Tacoma than my 17 Tacoma . Way more torque . It’s better in every aspect . I get 26mpg highway and 23 city . My 17 Tacoma was 18 mpg all the time . I love my 24 Tacoma .
so a TRD off-road with the bigger screen upgrade is 45K and change. That's about the same as a loaded Frontier Pro 4X. There is more value and less risk with the Frontier, just saying.
I’ll stick with the used V6’s for the foreseeable future. I’ve been priced out of the new truck zone. Toyota has lost their ever loving minds. A base model truck with a V6 and a lot less electronics and solid quality would sell. I guess I’ll hold on to my 2017 for another 100k
I like the engine a lot more. Not sure why people don't like a turbo. Great if you go to the mountains and great if you need to let the truck idle for some reason (just to run the heater or AC) because it uses less gas idling.
You can save significant $$$ on your new Tacoma if you sit down with your Sale rep and buy off their regional inventory. We live in the SE which, at the time, 2022, had a large inventory. Don’t buy off the lot with colors, options, accessories you don’t want or need. Select what you want off the regional inventory and the rep can subtract or add options as you like. We also found special discount’s on several packages which would not be seen by the buyer otherwise. We ended up with a 2022 TRD Off Road configured with just the options for our lifestyle and saved a few thousand dollars. Even though we made a special order, the dealer still gave us their usual new car purchase discount. It did not have to be on the lot to qualify.
Only time will tell. I have a 2007 Tacoma with 260,000 miles that is still running like a champ. It has zero issues other than normal wear & tear. Will this new Tacoma perform as well? I have my doubts with the 4 cylinder twin turbo.
I bought my 2001 tacoma 4x4 new off the delivery truck. $18000 cash. 23 years and 280,000 miles later she's all original except a front set of brakes , tires and a few very minor repairs done at home.
Reasons why I will NOT be buying the current generation Tacoma: 1. Turbo engine. Give us back the NA V8 and V6. 2. Overpriced. Even the lowest trim is unaffordable. 3. Back seat in the Crewcab is actually smaller. The back seats were already too small. 4. No doors on the Xtracab. How am I supposed to use the rear cab for cargo if I can't easily access it? Toyota, you really "dropped the ball" on the new Tacoma.
That explains why our local dealers can’t keep them in stock… they may not be popular in your area but I see tons on the road and it took me months to get one.
I went from a 2021 to 2024, so here’s some observations: 1. Braking - the new Safety Sense can brake for you when it detects a car in front of you and its sensitivity is configurable. If it’s on that may be what you experienced. It can also be turned off. With cruise on, lane departure, collision avoidance the truck can almost drive itself (stop, steer, resume), but it all can all be turned off if you don’t want it. I feel safer with this on. 2. V4 - I can’t speak to longevity, but the new powertrain is a big improvement. The Gen 3 would lug in stop and go traffic between 2 & 3. This has much better low end torque and you have 3 modes to drive in (eco, normal, sport). It shifts much better with the 8 speed. 3. Price - Yes they are expensive, but it also has much more safety tech and features than I had before. If you don’t need or want this it’s probably not for you.
Yep. I was going to get a newer Tacoma a few years ago, but ended up getting a Ranger instead. Wasn't sure about it as the Ranger had mostly just come back but I absolutely love it and got a lot newer truck with less miles for less money.
A gallon of gas in $5.80 here..... 55k is not to much for a truck that will last as long as this. When they were giving out free money very smart people told everyone this was going to happen. They also said on most financial channels that those with assets NOW will benefit. To late now, the sales are over things will be at retail for a long time I feel. The 4T is a better engine than the v6 PERIOD
So far, I haven't seen the '24 Tacoma pileup where I live. The four dealerships closest to me can't keep them in stock. I ordered a TRD Off-Road and was put on a wait list of two months. Buy the truck you want. Does it really matter to anyone that I bought my Tacoma, and you decide to buy another brand? I like the truck, even with the higher sticker price. BTW, if no one has noticed, everything has gone up in price, and not by a small amount. I guess we have the Fed to thank for printing money which is driving unbelievable inflation. If the Tacoma went up in price like my groceries, it would have cost me three to four times what it did.
Great video Ben, but here’s the thing… I don’t know if that I4 turbo is bad, but I know the Tundra’s V6 turbo is. I just wouldn’t pay a premium price for a Tacoma when the quality of it has questions. I feel like the much better move would be to buy a NA V6 Frontier… or hell, a Ford Ranger or Chevy Colorado. All are less expensive and all are, more or less, known quantities. The SR5 Tacoma needs to be $38K or less to be something worth considering.
I just bought a Honda Ridgeline RTL. I've only had it a day, but it blows me away. Nice ride. Great power. Very opulent. And it's a V6 that is reliable and trustworthy. I need this truck to last 200K miles or 20 years of easy driving.
Just got back from seeing the 2024 Tacoma at my local dealer. He had 5 in stock. 3 TRD Off Roads and 2 Sports. Prices seemed high for what you get, but the main thing I left with was how underwhelming the looks were. Very disappointing. I really liked the looks of the past Tacoma and wish they would have continued that theme instead of building a small Tundra.
Was thinking of getting a tacoma because Chevy priced me out of a new truck, but $60k for a 4 cylinder truck that gets 21 mpg. Looks like I’m keeping the Silverado and fixing it up.
I was super disappointed with the quality of my 2022 Tacoma - I now have a 2024 GMC Caynon AT4X - Super nice and is so much more comfortable. The new Tacoma outside does look nice though.
Just sold my 2014 Silverado. Started looking at Tacomas, then the sticker shock of new ones and some used ones, as expensive as the new ones. Looked at the Nissan Frontier, about $10,000 less and with a V-6. Got the SV with 4x and basic trim package. No princess rims, but with enough useful stuff that a truck is good with, power mirrors, windows, and power seats.

I bought a 2024 F150 XLT, 302a with all the bells and whistles for $51,000 after all taxes and fees. This base tacoma is selling for the same price, before tax and fees. Insane.
Bought a 24 off road with large screen & heated seats as the only add ons. Out the door for 47k. Had a 2020 off road fully loaded and it was no where near as good as the new truck.(full disclosure. I have not towed with the new truck yet, but the most I will tow is a 17' bass tracker or a utility trailer) NO MORE GEAR HUNTING, better get up and go, better ride. Face it all vehicle prices have gone threw the roof and I don't think it is going to get better. I have never been a big fan of the turbo as it is just something else to worry about. BUT the fact is this is the way of the future and there will always be something that we don't like about change. Drive it... you will like it.
I had a 2018 Tacoma TRD, I hopped in a Newer 2024. My first comment was…. “ “ Damn, did they make this smaller ..🫤”. The Backseat is an absolute joke, and I’m 5’10, you damn near have to be an amputee to fit back there. No way I’m paying $60k for a 2 seater truck …..😂

@@adir_1 There is a lot of extra room under the hood when I looked. I think that's so they can use the same design for the hybrid model and the gas model. The extra room had to come from somewhere. So if you get the Turbo4, you get less room in the cabin so that Toyota could make a Hybrid version, lol....
I ended up buying theNissan Frontier pro4x. Not gona lie I love it. Lots of power, V6, plenty of room for people/pets in the back seat (crew cab), love the trim, leather seats, remote start, Fender sound system with sub, tow package all for 45 taxes included. will add, that was the price before my trade in as well.
I'm so glad I purchased my 2018 Sport after wanting a Tacoma for a long time. I finally pulled the trigger six years ago and I'm glad I did. I was considering a new one, as I LOVE Tacomas, but not with a turbo. The price is a bit crazy too, but mostly it was the new engine. Not a fan. Mine has such low mileage on it anyhow it'll last me forever since I'm retired now and only drive a few miles a week at this point.

I have a 2024 SR5. I traded a 22 Frontier of which I loved except the bumpy ride. The Toyota's ride and drive are much.much better. So far I love my Toyota. The turbo charged 4 cylinder performs comfortably with the 310 HP V6 in the Nissan. I must admit I got better gas mileage from the Nissan as well.
I wanted to buy a tacoma just before the chip shortage, The dealer by my house wanted full MSRP + 5 grand…My friend who reviews cars pointed me to the Duramax Z71 Colorado…I saved 9 grand and got a truck that gets 30 on the frwy and tows great plus it has a great suspension…..It looks good parked next to my 2003 Duramax
If the Tacoma is made in Mexico, meaning they are saving a ton of money on labor, why didn't Tacoma pass those savings to the client? Ironically they bumped the MSRP when they can build them cheaper now.
The main issue is that the truck is $7k-$14k overpriced depending on the trim. You can get a lot more midsize truck for a lot less from the competition.

... and the Tacoma is built entirely in Mexico where Toyota pays its employees as close to nothing as it can, yet they charge an outrageous amount of money for these compromised vehicles whose manufacture puts no revenue back into the economies of countries where people purchase the vehicles.
Is it even possible a Mexican autoworker will ever be able to afford a Tacoma? Not for what they're getting paid.
The Interiors of these vehicles are (in my opinion) quite a bit cheaper with lighter construction, and I haven't verified this myself but I've being told the rear bumpers are welded right to the frames, so owner modifications & accident repairs will be much more complicated and expensive to do.
In my mind all these issues demonstrate Toyota's change in respect for both its employees and customers. The number of apologists here is surprising because it's pretty blatant, but I for one am extremely disappointed with what I see as Toyota's complete change of philosophy. Maybe I'd feel differently if I were a shareholder or paid contributor, but I'm just a loyal, longtime Toyota owner who would like to retire someday with a late model Tacoma but suddenly can't afford one anymore.
To be fair I'm doing Ok saving for my retirement, but buying a new Tacoma at these insanely inflated prices is a financial management test for each and every one of us. It's a poor & even foolish decision for anybody who doesn't have a fortune in disposable income to pay for one of these depreciating assets the way they are now.
Considering all the plastic under the hood I can't see how they're going to maintain their reliability, last as long, or hold their value as well as the older, more durable ones did. I just can't see how that will possibly happen.

The Taco engines are made in Huntsville, Alabama then sent to Mexico and installed. Some Taco's have been assembled in Mexico since 2004 and in 2019 all Tacoma assembly was moved to Mexico.

Its not that black and white, labour is only a fraction of what goes into manufacturing and development costs. The tooling , overhead, R&D all will still be expensive. This was a complete ground up redesign. 1st year startup costs will be high. The engine is more high tech than then old one. You lost 2 cylinders but added a turbo, more oiling, more cooling, more piping. Its all around a more expensive truck to build just at a glance
All that electronic crap on there and all it's going to do is break once it's out of warranty, so it basically ends up as a throwaway.
Build quality is not looking great. My Gen 2 is still 100% solid and silent on and off road. Panel gaps are consistent.
Maybe they'll do the Kaizen thing with the Gen 4 and it will get better. But initial reports aren't good.

I think the Tacoma’s biggest problem is their price points. The TRD Off-Road is $54k, with the 14inch screen. That’s close to Ranger Raptor & Colorado Zr2 pricing & those are better equipped trucks. The Tacoma TRD Pro is $66k, which is the price of decently equipped full size truck. The Tacoma looks great but it’s too expensive
And no human with legs can fit in the rear seats of the crew cab Tacoma.
That’s actually quite a bit more than a ZR2, which starts at $48k.
A 54k off road has just about every option you can get. That is probably less than 10% of the off roads sold. The average price of off roads on lots based on current inventories is 47K. You can keep repeating 54K but that does not mean they all cost that. You can get a Colorado ZR2 Bison for 66K but that doesn't mean they all cost 66k. I don't want a full size truck regardless of how little it costs.

@@apt62 I think it shows true Toyota buyers prefer reliability over more power. The 3.5L V6 was not a powerful engine but it was tried and tested. I know as a Toyota buyer, I prefer the 3.5L V6 over the twin turbo 4 cyl engine even if it's faster and more powerful.

@@apt62 the new Tundra engine has been recalled due to main bearing failures. It's a major problem and Toyota recently sent out a letter about it. At the moment, they don't have a fix for it. Many are saying it's a design flaw. Toyota messed up big time with their "more powerful and efficient" engine.
With all manufacturers raising the prices of trucks, we the public can force the cost down by not buying them! When there is a couple of years of inventory sitting there, basically rotting away, you will see them go way down!

A friend cross shopped the Tacoma and the Frontier. He went with the Frontier mainly because of the V6. No regrets.
He paid way too much money for a 20 year old truck. Frontier pricing is even stupider than the Tacoma and it's literally just a cosmetic refresh and a slightly newer engine on the 2005 truck

The biggest problem and the one 99% of people agree, which is absolutely the truth is the crazy price jump that is not justified for a vehicle who is now made in Mexico with a 4 cylinder.
I always take screenshots of vehicles I build online and I love the TRD OFF-ROAD and for 2022 it was $40k and now $50 for a truck that we all know it won’t last as long, period.

I think the 2nd gen was the perfect blend of small, not too expensive simple truck.
They can't do that because of EPA regulations. They sell small work trucks overseas but they're illegal to sell here. Look into it. Basically, vehicles are required to have a certain mpg for each weight, but the ratio the EPA set is skewed in favor of heavy trucks, basically making it impossible to make a light pickup with a decent amount of power.

The biggest problem with the new Tacoma is the price. All the reviews I've seen of the new Tacoma give it great reviews, except for the price. Toyota needs to take 5-7k off the price if they want to sell these in any number that will compete with Ford or Chevy.
Remember when the 3rd Gen Tundra (TTV6) came out in 22 and many said it looked like a solid engine? This 4 banger turbo engine scares the crap out of me. Like you said time will tell but I sure wouldn’t gamble on this for 3 or 4 years 😬!

@Marbind the SR5 is a base model and in many places it's going for 39-42k and that's for the 4x2 . It's a base model bascially plus it has a 4 cylinder engine not a v6 . It doesn't have leather interior, it doesn't have premium sound , it doesn't have heated seats, like everyone else has been saying it's way over priced for what you get .

The frontier is cheaper because it was built before the inflation took off. All the money Nissan put during the development of the current frontier generation was at a time that prices in general were way lower than today. Same with the Ridgeline. Honda decided to keep using the same old 2017 model in their most recent launch.
Wait until Nissan/Honda releases a redesigned model and be amaze with the higher prices.
Chevy and GMC pickups went up too because of this. Top of the line Colorado or Canyon is on the 60s.
Also, you can get a Colorado Trail Boss, with full extras for around 43K $. And this is what they´re charging for a Taco SR5.

I had a 2020 TRD Off-road long bed with the premium package and a pretty much every option available. I bought that for $42K at 0% interest. There is no way that this model should be in the 50s. They should be in the low 40s as best.

Frontier, Colorado and Ranger are all cheaper when you compare similarly equipped models. At least 6k and that's before the hybrid is added which will add another 3500.

You can get a Nissan Frontier Pro-4X for $46,000 and under. It still comes with a NA V-6. Not even a competition. Nissan is a better value for the money and piece of mind

Yes but the frontier is slow as dog 💩 running down hill on a hot summer day. It also has egregious payload number. A slow tranny reaction time and super out dated tech. The turning radius is absolutely abysmal along with an awkward heavy steering wheel feel.
Also front head room is dreadful. Also front seating position sucks with lack of steering telescopic option.

I have a 2023 Frontier P4x, I love it. I am in my early to mid 60's, 6'2 260 lbs no issues, leather seats and good comfort for me, plenty of power and torque. plenty of head room and leg room. P4X rides fine, even better now cause I had new tires installed, Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac RT in 265 70 17, Hankook AT sucked.
All this vindicates myself choosing the Nissan Frontier PRO 4X.

In the early 1970's I asked my Grandfather why he always bought trucks. He said a new truck cost only 2/3rd's of a new car and they are more useful than a car, too. How things have changed.
My one-and-only complaint about the Tacoma & 4Runner is the pricing. Period. I have zero issue w/ a turbo 4... zero issue with *where* it's built... like the way it looks... etc.. The beginning and end of the reason I dropped it from consideration and went with a '24 Colorado ZR2 instead is the price/value. The ZR2 is a MUCH better value for money... and, IMO, looks great.
Over price junk, buy the frontier!!!! The only V6 left!!!

You can get the Nissan Frontier which has a NA V6 for less. Heck, even a Ranger Raptor is less than a Tacoma TRD Pro and Tacoma Trail Hunter and has a V6.
I wanted a new tacoma but went with a Nissan Frontier Pro4X for several reasons... the Nissan has V/6 and price wise is a lot more reasonable. I've previously owned 2 Tacomas but felt I had no option in buying a 2024 Tacoma. The Frontier reminds me very much of my 2021 Tacoma. So far I'm happy with my purchase but kind of sad that Toyota has gone down this road which appears to be a disaster!!

I have a 2024 off-road Tacoma. I like the 2.4, gobs of torque. I like the new seating position, the new transmission, the beefier frame, the multi-link rear suspension. Much improved over my 2020 Tacoma.

I love my 2024 Tacoma SR5 2wd. It has just enough tech to make me happy.
I have always bought a Toyota truck over the last 20+ years. I can't afford a Tundra so in 2021 I leased my first Tacoma TRD Extended Cab. I loved the truck and all its features but to be honest it was cheaper to lease the new 2024 then to buy the old one. This one is an SR5 Double Cab with the upgraded JBL sound system and sliding rear window etc. I have had it for 2 months and 2000 miles and I love it just as much as I did the last one!!
In case you haven't noticed everything has gotten way overpriced. Say what you want but I believe this is still the best made truck in its class!! I'm looking forward to driving this one for many years to come.

I bought a 2024 Tacoma off-road. My fuel economy is not much better than my 2017 I had. The ride is not as nice as my third GEN was. I wish I would’ve kept my 2017.

My 2024 off Road sounds like a Dyson vacuum. It’s lost that truck vibe. Lots of hard plastics that scratch easily inside. Quality control of the fit and finish all over is poor. I should have not been in such a rush to buy it.

My 2017 trd sport with 75,000 miles will probably still last longer than any of the 2024's. Don't blame mexico, mine was assembled there, it's just poor decision making and bad design. I expected more from toyota. Oh ya! And really, a ten gallon gas tank! WTF!

People who buy TRD Pro and Trail hunters are very rare. You rarely see TRD Pro trucks on the road.
Toyota's bread and butter are SR5 and off road.
The sales are down 59% in the Q1.
As of June 2024, they're below 1/3 of their normal sales numbers.
Instead of selling 275k in 2024. Toyota will be lucky to sell 150k in 2024. They need to do massive discounts.

19mpg average so far, and I swear the gas tank is 2 gallons smaller.
I get way better gas mileage in my 24 Tacoma than my 17 Tacoma . Way more torque . It’s better in every aspect . I get 26mpg highway and 23 city . My 17 Tacoma was 18 mpg all the time . I love my 24 Tacoma .
so a TRD off-road with the bigger screen upgrade is 45K and change. That's about the same as a loaded Frontier Pro 4X. There is more value and less risk with the Frontier, just saying.
I’ll stick with the used V6’s for the foreseeable future. I’ve been priced out of the new truck zone. Toyota has lost their ever loving minds. A base model truck with a V6 and a lot less electronics and solid quality would sell. I guess I’ll hold on to my 2017 for another 100k
I like the engine a lot more. Not sure why people don't like a turbo. Great if you go to the mountains and great if you need to let the truck idle for some reason (just to run the heater or AC) because it uses less gas idling.

You can save significant $$$ on your new Tacoma if you sit down with your Sale rep and buy off their regional inventory.
We live in the SE which, at the time, 2022, had a large inventory.
Don’t buy off the lot with colors, options, accessories you don’t want or need.
Select what you want off the regional inventory and the rep can subtract or add options as you like. We also found special discount’s on several packages which would not be seen by the buyer otherwise.
We ended up with a 2022 TRD Off Road configured with just the options for our lifestyle and saved a few thousand dollars.
Even though we made a special order, the dealer still gave us their usual new car purchase discount. It did not have to be on the lot to qualify.
I just want a 4X4 2 door truck with a gas pedal and a brake pedal and windows that roll down. I don't even want a heated steering wheel.

Only time will tell. I have a 2007 Tacoma with 260,000 miles that is still running like a champ. It has zero issues other than normal wear & tear. Will this new Tacoma perform as well? I have my doubts with the 4 cylinder twin turbo.
I bought my 2001 tacoma 4x4 new off the delivery truck. $18000 cash. 23 years and 280,000 miles later she's all original except a front set of brakes , tires and a few very minor repairs done at home.
Reasons why I will NOT be buying the current generation Tacoma:
1. Turbo engine. Give us back the NA V8 and V6.
2. Overpriced. Even the lowest trim is unaffordable.
3. Back seat in the Crewcab is actually smaller. The back seats were already too small.
4. No doors on the Xtracab. How am I supposed to use the rear cab for cargo if I can't easily access it?

4 cylinder engines don't belong and pick ups and luxury cars. If I buy a truck or luxury car, it better be a twin turbo V6 at the very least.

That explains why our local dealers can’t keep them in stock… they may not be popular in your area but I see tons on the road and it took me months to get one.

I went from a 2021 to 2024, so here’s some observations:
1. Braking - the new Safety Sense can brake for you when it detects a car in front of you and its sensitivity is configurable. If it’s on that may be what you experienced. It can also be turned off. With cruise on, lane departure, collision avoidance the truck can almost drive itself (stop, steer, resume), but it all can all be turned off if you don’t want it. I feel safer with this on.
2. V4 - I can’t speak to longevity, but the new powertrain is a big improvement. The Gen 3 would lug in stop and go traffic between 2 & 3. This has much better low end torque and you have 3 modes to drive in (eco, normal, sport). It shifts much better with the 8 speed.
3. Price - Yes they are expensive, but it also has much more safety tech and features than I had before. If you don’t need or want this it’s probably not for you.
They are more expensive for sure. Not mention you have the colorado zr2 and canyon at4, ford ranger as options.
Yep. I was going to get a newer Tacoma a few years ago, but ended up getting a Ranger instead. Wasn't sure about it as the Ranger had mostly just come back but I absolutely love it and got a lot newer truck with less miles for less money.
A gallon of gas in $5.80 here..... 55k is not to much for a truck that will last as long as this. When they were giving out free money very smart people told everyone this was going to happen. They also said on most financial channels that those with assets NOW will benefit. To late now, the sales are over things will be at retail for a long time I feel. The 4T is a better engine than the v6 PERIOD

So far, I haven't seen the '24 Tacoma pileup where I live. The four dealerships closest to me can't keep them in stock. I ordered a TRD Off-Road and was put on a wait list of two months.
Buy the truck you want. Does it really matter to anyone that I bought my Tacoma, and you decide to buy another brand? I like the truck, even with the higher sticker price. BTW, if no one has noticed, everything has gone up in price, and not by a small amount. I guess we have the Fed to thank for printing money which is driving unbelievable inflation. If the Tacoma went up in price like my groceries, it would have cost me three to four times what it did.

Great video Ben, but here’s the thing… I don’t know if that I4 turbo is bad, but I know the Tundra’s V6 turbo is. I just wouldn’t pay a premium price for a Tacoma when the quality of it has questions.
I feel like the much better move would be to buy a NA V6 Frontier… or hell, a Ford Ranger or Chevy Colorado.
All are less expensive and all are, more or less, known quantities.
The SR5 Tacoma needs to be $38K or less to be something worth considering.

I just bought a Honda Ridgeline RTL. I've only had it a day, but it blows me away. Nice ride. Great power. Very opulent. And it's a V6 that is reliable and trustworthy. I need this truck to last 200K miles or 20 years of easy driving.

Just got back from seeing the 2024 Tacoma at my local dealer. He had 5 in stock. 3 TRD Off Roads and 2 Sports. Prices seemed high for what you get, but the main thing I left with was how underwhelming the looks were. Very disappointing. I really liked the looks of the past Tacoma and wish they would have continued that theme instead of building a small Tundra.
Was thinking of getting a tacoma because Chevy priced me out of a new truck, but $60k for a 4 cylinder truck that gets 21 mpg. Looks like I’m keeping the Silverado and fixing it up.

I was super disappointed with the quality of my 2022 Tacoma - I now have a 2024 GMC Caynon AT4X - Super nice and is so much more comfortable. The new Tacoma outside does look nice though.

Just sold my 2014 Silverado. Started looking at Tacomas, then the sticker shock of new ones and some used ones, as expensive as the new ones. Looked at the Nissan Frontier, about $10,000 less and with a V-6. Got the SV with 4x and basic trim package. No princess rims, but with enough useful stuff that a truck is good with, power mirrors, windows, and power seats.

I bought a 2024 F150 XLT, 302a with all the bells and whistles for $51,000 after all taxes and fees. This base tacoma is selling for the same price, before tax and fees. Insane.

Bought a 24 off road with large screen & heated seats as the only add ons. Out the door for 47k. Had a 2020 off road fully loaded and it was no where near as good as the new truck.(full disclosure. I have not towed with the new truck yet, but the most I will tow is a 17' bass tracker or a utility trailer) NO MORE GEAR HUNTING, better get up and go, better ride. Face it all vehicle prices have gone threw the roof and I don't think it is going to get better. I have never been a big fan of the turbo as it is just something else to worry about. BUT the fact is this is the way of the future and there will always be something that we don't like about change. Drive it... you will like it.

@@adir_1 There is a lot of extra room under the hood when I looked. I think that's so they can use the same design for the hybrid model and the gas model. The extra room had to come from somewhere. So if you get the Turbo4, you get less room in the cabin so that Toyota could make a Hybrid version, lol....
I ended up buying theNissan Frontier pro4x. Not gona lie I love it. Lots of power, V6, plenty of room for people/pets in the back seat (crew cab), love the trim, leather seats, remote start, Fender sound system with sub, tow package all for 45 taxes included. will add, that was the price before my trade in as well.

I'm so glad I purchased my 2018 Sport after wanting a Tacoma for a long time. I finally pulled the trigger six years ago and I'm glad I did. I was considering a new one, as I LOVE Tacomas, but not with a turbo. The price is a bit crazy too, but mostly it was the new engine. Not a fan. Mine has such low mileage on it anyhow it'll last me forever since I'm retired now and only drive a few miles a week at this point.
The manufacturers loaded their vehicles with tech - tech which ages almost as well as milk... 🤣🤣🤣

I have a 2024 SR5. I traded a 22 Frontier of which I loved except the bumpy ride. The Toyota's ride and drive are much.much better. So far I love my Toyota. The turbo charged 4 cylinder performs comfortably with the 310 HP V6 in the Nissan. I must admit I got better gas mileage from the Nissan as well.
The engine is 1/2 the size with the same MPG, and now it can not tow. What would be the MPG and HP be if it had the Tundra engine in it?
The TTV6 is a complete disaster.
V6 Tundra motor is a bonfire waiting to be lit. They have to completely deconstruct the truck to fix them
I wanted to buy a tacoma just before the chip shortage, The dealer by my house wanted full MSRP + 5 grand…My friend who reviews cars pointed me to the Duramax Z71 Colorado…I saved 9 grand and got a truck that gets 30 on the frwy and tows great plus it has a great suspension…..It looks good parked next to my 2003 Duramax

If the Tacoma is made in Mexico, meaning they are saving a ton of money on labor, why didn't Tacoma pass those savings to the client? Ironically they bumped the MSRP when they can build them cheaper now.
