With all that said, kudos to Honda, Nissan and Mazda for still installing NA 6 cylinder engines. 👏 I feel like Toyota is heading backwards. The new 2025 frontier has some really nice upgrades. Including 500 lbs more towing capacity. Nissan must have listened to all the complaints because they addressed most of the concerns.
NA v6 over a turbo 4-popper any day. As a Toyota fanatic, I’ll take the Frontier. Toyota will certainly lose market share with this generation of Tacoma.
I traded in my 2021 Tacoma SR5 for a 2022 Frontier SV when they came out with the redesign. No regrets at all. I only wish Nissan kept the floor bed rails in the 2022.
And much better build at the Canton plant in Mississippi using the same old school F-Alpha box frame and VQ designed V6. This is not a throw away truck. You can abuse it and it will go over 300K miles. Its the way the second gen taco used to be.
I had to chose between these two trucks earlier this year. I went with the Frontier. No regrets. Turning radius is horrible I'll admit but that is about my only complaint.
Z1 off road is making a supercharger kit for the frontier that makes 400hp. You can also swap a Nissan Titan front suspension onto the frontier using only OEM parts. I think the frontier will explode even more in popularity in a few more years. Trusty ol V6 that has DNA from the 2002 pathfinder. 9sp Mercedes designed trans(shares the same trans with the Nissan Z, Titan and the Aston Martin DBX) boxy body on frame and overall very rugged. This is great truck, if you like super fancy things and buttons and shit, this is not the truck for you. If you want a truck to be a truck and do truck things with it, this is the truck for you.
Very happy with my 2024 Pro-4X. Comfortable on highway. Good mpg. Handles well. Great in deep sand. I think the styling inside and out beats the Tacoma. Much better value with the Frontier.
And Nissan for 25 is updating the infotainment as well as a minor facelift. The Frontier has really picked up the love it deserves over the last couple of years. I'd take the Frontier minus the bed bar which has no function, but my opinion may be biased since I have been a 19 Pro4x owner for some time now.
Dad was mad and worried you were going to break the delicate Tacoma at 18:25 hahaha. He was worried. If a transmission breaks going from 5th to 3rd it is a huge pile of trash. Wow
45k miles on my '22 Pro-4X. Never in doubt that I made the right decision not waiting for the new Taco. Now I'm seeing that Toyota didn't put bump stops on the front suspension and people are blowing out shocks while off roading. Toyota really screwed up on this new gen.
Truck King! The Frontier doesn’t have much rust compared to when you viewed one a while back. That’s a good sign. There was a lot you’d mentioned on the prior one you had. For a new truck that is
Reading all the comments, I have to say, I’m pleasantly surprised at the Frontier love even from Toyota guys. Toyota guys typically love to bash Frontiers. This video would get killed on Taco Nation. I love all Japan auto makers. I do drive a 22 P4X, 96K miles so far and no issues.
I never thought I would say this, but the frontier is now a better, more reliable truck. Then the tacoma, the frontier is simply more simple, and the tacoma is now a driving computer system that has a weak front differential. Nissan, all the way🎉
Frontier has ALWAYS been a very reliable truck. See the Million Mile Frontier on TFL truck channel, from.2007. In fact, Nissan has made them well since 1959. My 1987 is 38 years old and works hard to this day. And, Frontiers never rotted to death like Tacoma.
I'd take a Taco just not that one. I drive a lot in snow, and I tow up to a 5k box trailer. Ideally a Limited for the full-time 4wd, great cameras, and great interior. They high-power outlet in the bed would be useful as well. I have no need for the advanced 4wd features of the OR model. Turbos are way too common today to worry about that aspect.
I think the Frontier doesn’t look as good as the other midsize trucks, but if I had to buy one today, I’d get the Frontier. Thankfully, I have a 3rd gen Tacoma.
Likewise as a happy 22 Ranger owner. I did test drive a 3rd gen Tacoma and it was disapointing. I didn't consider the Frontier at the time, but would now.
This is a no-brainers. The new Taco's are tearing up left and right. The Frontier soldiers along. No high tech. No troubles. No one with any sense wants a new Toyota anything anymore.
Hats off to Nissan! Very impressed! They went back to durable, proven old school platform which is very bold of them to do in a tech world. I’m not a fan of either so Im not being biased when I say this, the particular Nissan is better in every way than the Toyota. My buddy just bought 2024 Tacoma and put a little over 7,000 miles on it when the transmission went out. Such a shame… politics has destroyed our automobiles. I don’t even blame the big 3 or any other automaker for these failures so much. The automakers are being forced to put gas saving technologies in there vehicles And it’s tech that just isnt there yet in terms of being reliable and we as consumers are suffering.
@@billsouza4457 Nice, those trucks look sick, I always notice them when they drive by. Just like 3rd gen Taco, they have their own unique look, not looking like copy pasted.
I am the OO of a '13 Taco with 275K well maintained miles. No oil consumption, and my driveway is spotless. Less then 5K in repairs. I love it and I'm keeping it for now. However, if I had to choose today, I would choose the Nissan. Don't like Turbos and there are a lot of kinks in the new Tacos.
Those were great trucks unless you had the rust issue in areas that throw salt on the roads. You will never get that many miles on a turbo. Expect around 150K miles or less before the turbo gives up. NA motors are the best. Less complexity. And the 4 liter on yours is pure port injected making it even better. EPA won't allow anyone to make port injected motors anymore. I love my 2019 Frontier because it was the last year for the 4 liter port injected motor. Yeah they suck gas but they are indestructible.
I've been looking to replace my 2014 F150 for a while now, so I have seen a LOT of truck videos for a couple of years. I find it interesting that TK's leaderboard still has the Ridgeline as the fastest truck towing 5000 lbs 4 years later and a higher payload (1483) than either of these trucks today. I never thought I would say this, but I think I might get one instead of these overpriced competitors. Not a real truck? Maybe, but it seems to be kicking some ass (just not in Moab).
I think the Ridgeline is perfect for lots of people. Good reliability, payload, towing and it has AWD so it's good in the winter too. Only thing I didn't like was it uses a timing belt so you'd have to plan for that expense.
I suggest you install Idlestopper V2 (select specific one for Ridgeline) and (Smart) S-VCM Controller. Also if you care about ventilated seats the 2025 Ridgeline Black Edition has 3 levels of ventilated seats alongside heating. It’s direct injection only so an oil catch can is very very much recommended. Change transmission fluid every 20K (instead of Honda recommended 30K) if you’re towing. If you’re installing a dash cam and want clean wiring then a Dongar Dashcam (for Honda model) Power Adapter (7-pin Type A) which allows you to have USB type A power out of the rear view mirror shroud. Change oil every 5,000 miles, no more. They’re not your friends, they’re here to make money. Change your fluids by traditional rules in the modern age where oils are thinner than ever before and tolerances are tighter but magically maintenance is extended when synthetic oil hasn’t changed in decades. The faster parts wear out the better the business. Again, they’re not your friends. Every company has done or is actively doing shady behavior to please investors by maximizing profits. It is concerning why you’re replacing your truck after only 10 years. Are you religious with maintenance or do you assume reliable means you can abuse it which it doesn’t. F150 drivers generally the worst in caretaking imo so I can’t help but feel this way, if I’m wrong about you then I apologize.
No it's fantastic. Ugly as sin, but if you're not off roading it, nothing beats the practicality of the Ridgeline in the midsized segment. Hopefully they do a 3rd gen and make it look less like a mini van with a bed.
Scotty Kilmer made fun of it the other day, he said it looked like they a bed to a Honda Accord 😂 They do ride pretty sweet, probably fastest because it's a disposable tin can...unitized body, got no solid frame.
I don’t know folks…Ridgeline has 1600LBS cargo carrying and smokes any of these options towing 0-60, and is way more practical for carrying actual grown people in the back…why buy any of these other options unless you are a diehard off-roader
@@UA-camuser1aa Why does that matter if most never plan to go off road. And yet the Ridgeline will outclimb most others on a steep sandy hill. And keep in mind the good old Jeep XJ was also a unibody and it still one of the best off roaders after 30 years.
Maybe I'm a minority but I prefer the old look of the frontier before the redesign. The new one looks kinda plain but as a Titan owner I'd choose the frontier, i feel like you get more bang for your buck

Has Toyota lost its mojo? Can they Kaizen their way out of the hole they have put themselves in? I'm not buying until i have some serious assurance that thinfs have been rectified! Cheers!
Hydraulic steering is not what makes the Frontier's steering feel heavy . . . it's by design. Many 2000s Chevys used hydraulics and their steering wheels could be turned with one finger.
Nissan has the better engine and not all the stupid expensive technology. Toyota really messed up, even the new Ford Ranger looks better with a twin turbo 2.7 V-6.

Ok, the sliding tie down system is a patented Nissan Trademark called "Utilitrak" system. This is used to adjust tie down points. The fixed tie down points, as the name suggests, is fixed! Both these systems are independent and need not work in tandem. PS: One of the BEST and UNBIASED reviews I've seen on Nissan's! The rest seems to be "sponsored by Toyota's!

Its because they got a new CEO and he is all in on the new TNGA platform. Which is a cheaper made truck using cheaper suppliers with higher profit margins. Sound familiar? Same thing ceo Carlos did at stellantis. And that brand is in a dumpster fire. Like Toyota if you want a good one you have to buy older. For Ram that means an FCA built truck made in 2021 or older.
💯 correct. Toyota is losing loyal customers and no one should be purchasing any new Toyota Truck or SUV with the new platforms. Toyota has let greed and ignorance take over and it shows with these new Tundras, Tacomas, and soon to be an epic failure the 2025 Toyota 4Runner.
Hello Truck Kings Thanks for all you do and love your approach in your reviews. I am looking to replace my 16 yr old Silverado and my beloved 5.3 V8 is going to be prohibitively expensive. I tow a small camper that replaced a much larger camper. All that said I have had the Frontier on my short list. I am particularly interested in how it would perform towing a camper. While my trailer is only 4000 lbs (max) the profile makes it a much different experience from a flat trailer while towing. I would love to see more reviews towing RVs because they are hard to find on UA-cam for the Nissan.
I just bought a white Hardbody after looking at the 24 Taco TRD Sport and Chevy Colorado Trailboss. The Taco was way too expensive OTD and the couple local dealers that had a Trailboss had them loaded down with extra dealer add-ons. The Hardbody was by far the best deal and I love the retro wheels.
I don't like the Frontier, but I don't take the Tacoma either because Toyota made a big mistake to reduce the V6 to 4 cylinders. They should stay with the V6 engine and drop the price.
truck king, i recommend a new topic for each video. timing belts or timing chains? are these trucks made with timing belts or timing chains. most trucks with timing chains outlast those with timing belts
I had a 2012 frontier, it was a decent truck for sure. But coming from a first gen Tundra to the frontier was definitely an eye opener! Build quality ert...that Tundra was probably the best truck I've ever had. 300,000 miles and the transmission went, a lot of heavy pulling, more than what the first gen Tundra was rated for. The Nissan never left me stranded, just alot of little things, raddles etc. I have a 2017 Tacoma TRD Sport now, it's a great truck, although the Nissan would cream it off the line and further down the line! A lot peppier for sure then my Tacoma. But again, the build quality on my Tacoma seems better. Just sluggish and I will admit, not great for long trips, the seats and their placement are horrible 😑 basically sitting on the floor with your legs straight out, not comfortable for long periods of time. I like the look of the new frontier, I had a 90's hardbody and loved it. Definitely looking into the frontier over the new Tacoma, especially with everything I'm hearing trouble wise about the new Tacoma and tundras.

Brake tests would be appreciated, Headlights, Nissan still using Halogen compared to the Toyota Projectors. The difference in the tow hooks is that one of the hooks is what is used on the production line and it is not designed as a recovery device. Great review guys.
Frontier for me. Larger bed, naturally aspirated V6, underside, towing etc. etc. just seems the Frontier did everything better. Also there looked to be a little more room between you guys in the front. The Frontier looked much better towing, sat much better. Leaving everything the same equals reliability.
I always appreciated that you can get a long bed on the pro4x. Toyota should do this on the off road edition. Also, let’s not pretend this is the old port injected super reliable frontier. It’s not bad, but likely won’t last as long as the old ones that were super reliable.
The new Taco is high tech, with questionable build quality. The Frontier is "old school", hence less tech features. I like the Frontier and would consider it first.

@@ALMX5DPEasier to fix oil and coolant leaks from the turbo.
@@0HOON0 how would that reconcile with this having 2/3 the spark plugs, 1/2 the valve train, and generally easier access by way of being an inline configuration as opposed to a larger v configuration engine?
@@ALMX5DP Spark plug will almost certainly be much easier in the Toyota.
@@ALMX5DP Spark plugs ? Really ? Something that gets changed at 100k plus miles might be an issue ? Generally easy access for what exactly ? The V6 in the Nissan won't need anything but oil changes for years and years.
This was the best truck comparison ever! Straight to the point. The Tacoma looks a little more handsome but for $10000 less, Frontier all day!
Gice the frontier a 3 inch lift and level with black wheels, and I think it looks better.
I’m a huge Toyota fan and I have always been that way until recently. Ever since Toyota shifted its lineup to TNGA platform it feels like their Q/C and reliability went down big time. And this small displacement forced induction motor trend isn’t looking all that convincing, if at all. With all that said, kudos to Honda, Nissan and Mazda for still installing NA 6 cylinder engines. 👏 I feel like Toyota is heading backwards. This 4th gen Tacoma is ruining all the hard work previous 3 generation of Tacomas had done. I would not buy or even touch anything Toyota is currently building. Thanks for the video gents! Great work!
Mazda doesn't have an NA 6cyl. At least not in the US
@@wilson3246 I stand corrected. You’re right current CX-90 carries turbo straight 6. However, at least Mazda is still offering that 6 cylinder engine instead of packing turbo 4. I’d still take my hat off to that.
Its the good work of the new CEO. I think he must be related to that turkey Carlos that runs Stellantis. Make a cheaper truck and charge more for it. Use inferior parts from shoddy suppliers etc.. will drive the brand into the ground. You better believe it.
I currently own a 2020 tacoma v6. And let me tell you that I don't see myself getting a 4cyl turbo tacoma, especially at the price point that they're at.
Nissan frontier pro4x would most likely be my next truck.
Finally a real review not like trd john who is paid off
Dad said it best; Frontier if you are practical, Tacoma if you aren't.
@@ejesoriginal what was the reasoning behind it?
@@xdi1733 Nissan because: No turbos, V6, longer bed, and no turbos.
And does all the truck stuff better
Your dad said that ?
@@xdi1733Common sense
Nissan frontier, those forward tie downs, unbolt flip over, bolt back in, clearanced Clarence. Your welcome.
As an owner of 3 trd offroad tacomas. I now have a frontier pro4x. Nissan all day over toyota.
Frontier if you want a no fuss truck
And no problems lol. Just ask you dealer what they charge for labor/hour. This is truck for people who just want something that works.
For a big guy that was a pretty impressive leap off of the back of the truck LOL
young knees.
seeing these guys testing mid sized trucks is comical. they make them look like mini trucks. they barely fit in them.
@@thecount1001 yeah I was laughing about that too actually but I'm still impressed at how the 6 foot 2 inch 300 plus pound lad do a standing jump off the top of the truck inland solid he must still be pretty young LOL
Shook my phone
As an owner of a 22 Frontier and I test drove the new Tacoma I am sticking with the Frontier. And if I was looking for a new midsize truck I would buy another Frontier.
The new 2025 frontier has some really nice upgrades. Including 500 lbs more towing capacity. Nissan must have listened to all the complaints because they addressed most of the concerns.
2025 Nissan Frontier. Refreshed look really nice big screen and more towing
NA v6 over a turbo 4-popper any day. As a Toyota fanatic, I’ll take the Frontier.
Toyota will certainly lose market share with this generation of Tacoma.
Government emissions requirements are ruining cars. They’re becoming disposable and less serviceable.
With the front tie downs. Turn them upside down. It gives you much more room to connect a strap to them.
I traded in my 2021 Tacoma SR5 for a 2022 Frontier SV when they came out with the redesign. No regrets at all. I only wish Nissan kept the floor bed rails in the 2022.
Id take the frontier over the Tacoma! And save the $10000 + Mark up! To me it's a much better buy and saves you money!
The Frontier is a great truck, I'd go with that over the 2024+ Tacoma for sure.
Very happy with my 2024 Pro-4X. Comfortable on highway. Good mpg. Handles well. Great in deep sand. I think the styling inside and out beats the Tacoma. Much better value with the Frontier.
Test drove the 2025 Pro 4X and then the 2024 TRD Off Road (both new) and within 15 seconds I chose the Pro 4X
Stop buying new trucks. Prices are out of control. Let them rot on the lot.
Nissan as it has V6, really liked the removable storage bins. Totally agree real miss on the pro pilot assist.
It doesn't work with the hydraulic steering. Need electric assist for it to work.
I love the Frontier retro wheels.
One thing they can't use against Frontier is FACTS. They must rely on famboy fantasy.
Frontier looks way better!
I think the Frontier doesn’t look as good as the other midsize trucks, but if I had to buy one today, I’d get the Frontier. Thankfully, I have a 3rd gen Tacoma.
I'd take the Frontier over the Tacoma any day. This coming from a very happy '21 Ranger owner
Fanboys are still defending new Mexican soft Taco like it's the best thing since sliced bread.
I am glad I got last year Taco.. Not only because of the V6 but damn, that looks like a sports car rather than a truck and expensive af.
I wanted a Taco for many years. I waited one year too long. I bought a 24' Frontier, and I love it.
@@billsouza4457 Nice, those trucks look sick, I always notice them when they drive by. Just like 3rd gen Taco, they have their own unique look, not looking like copy pasted.
The third Gen Tacomas were too small.
The Ridgeline being that much faster than the others is mind boggling.
Unibody "truck". I'm guessing it's a lot lighter than the full frame trucks.
It is lighter but is still towing 5,000 lbs. The N/A Honda V-6 has always been a great engine.
I have a 06 ridgeline 285000 Miles still running great. Have 2023 titan xd also very happy with so far sad to see nissan let it go for good .
Is it body on frame?
@@UA-camuser1aa No, it's uni-body
@@UA-camuser1aa Why does that matter if most never plan to go off road. And yet the Ridgeline will outclimb most others on a steep sandy hill. And keep in mind the good old Jeep XJ was also a unibody and it still one of the best off roaders after 30 years.
@@MikeR55 it matters to me because I go off-road.
Maybe I'm a minority but I prefer the old look of the frontier before the redesign. The new one looks kinda plain but as a Titan owner I'd choose the frontier, i feel like you get more bang for your buck
Great review gents! The Taco never won on specs, it only ever won on reliability. So many things have very publicly gone wrong with this latest generation of Toyota trucks across the board. Has Toyota lost its mojo? Can they Kaizen their way out of the hole they have put themselves in? I'm not buying until i have some serious assurance that thinfs have been rectified! Cheers!
I think I would take the Nissan I had a hardbody back in the day and a frontier both great trucks
I STILL have a 1987 Hardbody from that day. Use it almost every day. 430,000 miles.
Hydraulic steering is not what makes the Frontier's steering feel heavy . . . it's by design. Many 2000s Chevys used hydraulics and their steering wheels could be turned with one finger.
It's not heavy at all. People nowadays are just super soft lol.
Trucks aside, this dude is impressing me with his mount and dismount of the bed.
Still young, and with tough Canadian knees.
Nissan has the better engine and not all the stupid expensive technology. Toyota really messed up, even the new Ford Ranger looks better with a twin turbo 2.7 V-6.
The 2.7TT Ranger has huge power advantage over the rest of the field. Much larger than the numbers suggest.
That 2.7tt looks scarry complicated.
As a 2023 Frontier Pro-$X owner, I love my truck. I'm use to the steering, no issues in 24k miles. The Frontiers are discounted, whereas dealers in Florida are marking up the stickers.... That's a lot of $$$$.
I have a Corolla Cross, the steering is incredible light a I love it, everything else I drive now feels like it has manual steering.
Nissan for the win.
I haven't driven the new Tacoma but I have driven a new frontier and that's a nice truck. Drives nice.
🤣🤣🤣
Nissan for me 😊
Ok, the sliding tie down system is a patented Nissan Trademark called "Utilitrak" system.
Toyota loyalist here...
The more I watch these newer Toyota truck videos, the more I'm convinced that the engineers & accountants at Toyota are trying so hard to piss off and drive away their customers. And trust me, they're succeeding. 😒🙄
I'll keep my older Toyotas, thank you very much! 😐
Hello Truck Kings
Thanks for all you do and love your approach in your reviews.
I bought the Nissan Pro-4X for the same reason. Best bang for the buck, by far. I bought my Pro-4X for $41K.
Both are the best.. we have toyota and nissan at home too
Same here. 2015 4Runner and 2022 Frontier.
truck king, i recommend a new topic for each video. timing belts or timing chains? are these trucks made with timing belts or timing chains. most trucks with timing chains outlast those with timing belts
I hope the frontier becomes as successful as the tacoma in the aftermarket support. In terms of many different parts like how the tacoma is
😊digging the hard body
Does it come in a stick shift
Why compare a base Nissan with an appearance package VS a TRD offload? Oh well, Nissan with a V6 for me..
Although I'm generally not a big Nissan fan, and if l was in the market for a new truck this size, l would definitely consider the Frontier.
Nice review of these two truck's!
Absolutely the best reciew sir. I love watching you and Dad!! Can you show Ford and GM what a six foot bed looks like on a mid-size? Their tape measures don't go beyond 5 feet!
I’ll take the Nissan specifically for the N/A V6. I’m not sold on 4 bangers in trucks.
The frontier seems to low to the ground. Does it come in manual transmission?
I wish, I wish I wish that Frontier came with a manual! Manual Nissan! Please!
Brake tests would be appreciated, Headlights, Nissan still using Halogen compared to the Toyota Projectors. The difference in the tow hooks is that one of the hooks is what is used on the production line and it is not designed as a recovery device. Great review guys.
Excellent episode as always!!! 😁
I have a 2009 Tacoma 4x4 sport v6, loved it. Bought a Frontier Pro 4x in April. Love it more. Toyota lost my business due to the turbo 4 crap.
Nissan all day long !!!
The new Taco is high tech, with questionable build quality. The Frontier is "old school", hence less tech features. I like the Frontier and would consider it first.
I have a 2nd gen and a 3rd gen Tacoma
Id go for the Nissan with the V-6
I’m not sure which truck I’d choose. But I am nostalgic.over the manual. Wish I had one.
306 Comments, every one I read said Frontier, personally we’ve had 10 Toyota’s but the deal breaker is Toyota not carrying anything on the lot in Canada. I will never buy a Toyota again if they don’t have a full lot. I got screwed really bad on my last trade because nothing was available. Really considering the Frontier.
Nissan frontier all day.
Without thinking.
I love my Pro4X. Such an underrated truck.
