I will never forget this trip... Almost two years ago I took this train from Toronto to Vancouver and it was simply amazing. Being in a single room, with no distractions, a heater, toilet, sink and my own bed made the trip so accommodating. Waking up in the middle of the night to the moon shining through the northern Ontario pine trees, knowing you’re in the middle of nowhere yet amongst others just makes it much more comforting.
I recommend this to everyone, you’ll spend 5 days on this train and you won’t regret a single moment. It will also make you appreciate this country a lot more, we have such a beautiful wilderness that’s still untouched and hopefully it will always stay that way.

Thanks for the memories. A single 23 year old immigrant from England, I took the train in April 1966 to Vancouver (4 days) after a horrible crossing (force 7 gale) , arriving a day late in Montréal and missing a layover night at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel. Arrived in Vancouver with $400, no job, nowhere to stay. Six months later was in Vernon, BC working for The Bay. Been a Canadian citizen ever since, but living now in Vermont. In those days the train went through Calgary, Banff, the Kicking Horse Tunnels, Rockies, Salmon Arm, Kamloops, Fraser Canyon, Hope to Van.

Back then, CN covered most of this route, starting in Montreal ( where we lived), and traversing through Algonquin Park to Ottawa, Pembroke, North Bay, and then to Capreol, where we joined with another train from Toronto. The rest of the route is the same. So now it seems that the CP cars are used along most of the old CN route. Still, with the changes, this video brought back such memories for me. This was a blast from the past! I did this trip in September 1978 - it was undoubtedly one of the best experiences of my life. There were a few differences - I left from Montreal, the train was older and didn't seem as quiet as this one appears to be. I slept in a lower berth in a sleeping car - very comfortable. However, I had no access to a shower the entire time. The food on this train appears to be a bit better than what I experienced, although it was by no means not tasty. The scenery was every bit as stunning, however the city of Vancouver has certainly undergone a major metamorphosis in 41 years!
