  • New York to Toronto by train on Amtrak & VIA Rail's "Maple Leaf", showing coach class & business class, the cafe car, and scenery along the Hudson & Mohawk rivers and across the Niagara into Canada. For schedule, fares, tickets see www.seat61.com...
I've taken this New York-Toronto train twice now, and covered the Hudson Valley section between New York and Albany on multiple occasions as it's also the way to Chicago and points west. I love it, a relaxing ride on a spacious train with a lot of sights to see - West Point Academy, Bannerman's Island, Storm King Mountain to name just three.
We continued from Toronto to Vancouver and on to Victoria B.C. to see friends. The Toronto-Vancouver video is at • Toronto to Vancouver b...

I did Toronto to New York for my wife's milestone birthday as she wanted to fly to New York, but I had other ideas of going by train. For my milestone birthday, we did fly to New York, so we could ride the AMTRAK Vermonter to St Albans. I would recommend both. Nice video Mark.

0:45 The new Tappan Zee Bridge; the old one, built in 1952, was falling apart. I was born/raised in NYC, went to college in Buffalo, and now live in the Hudson Valley, so I really enjoyed this video! I used the derelict Buffalo terminal in 1975, and it was haunted then! But the city of Buffalo has made a great comeback in recent years - downtown, waterfront, public transport. I fly often to Toronto because my company has an office there. It’s just so much faster.

"The Water Level Route" between NYC and Chicago. From Buffalo, fast sleeper trains like the 20th Century Limited would swing west along the New York Central mainline along the south shore of Lake Erie, then up to hug the southern tip of Lake Michigan into Chicago.

This was a very interesting journey with some magnificent scenery. I think rail travel allows us to see many new and different things and we can appreciate the beauty and the beast of whatever region we are travelling through at the time. I hate flying and only fly if time is a factor. Here in Australia the distances between major cities and towns is quite vast and rail travel is expensive so most people drive or fly. The train in this video is equivalent to first class in our trains here. From this and other videos I have seen I think that Canada and the United States are both beautiful countries and I hope to explore them in the future.

Assuming this service resumes, I will say that you do not need to spend money on business class for this trip unless you need a flexible ticket. The seating (in most cases) is very similar assuming you get one of the Amfleet II coaches (numbered 25*** - eg 25055 in this video) as opposed to the Amfleet I ones (numbered 82*** - eg 82766 in this video). The most common consist was (pre-pandemic) 3x Amfleet II coaches, 1x Amfleet I coach, and 1x Amfleet I cafe/business car.
Around 20 years ago they often only used 84-seat Amfleet I coaches with ugly red interiors - and those made for an awful ride. I suspect there were enough complaints, and they decided to add Amfleet II cars to the mix as a result - some with the ugly red interiors and some with the ones you see here. Most (if not all) cars have been refurbished again with leather seating that is excellent.

Apart from the free coffee, the big advantage of business class is the 2+1 seating when travelling alone, which has SOLO seats one side of the aisle. Aisle AND window!

@@seat61 that may be, but having been on this train several times, I have found that the business class seating is actually more cramped than the Amfleet II coaches - especially when you have a free seat next to you. Yes, there's the free non-alcoholic beverages, but that's really not a big deal in my view.

Service was suspended betw Niagara Falls and Toronto due to Whirlpool falls bridge track work. Busing betw Niagara Falls on the U.S. side and Toronto with NO intermediate stops.
Niagara Falls in Canada has one other train service, GO Transit on weekdays, strictly commuter to Toronto and return. Supplemented by feeder buses to Hamilton and other stops west of Toronto to meet trains there.
For travel from Canada to the U.S., immigration procedures are at the new Niagara Falls customs house that houses a train station, or vice versa. US customs lives up to dual reputations of border bouncers and disdain for Amtrak travellers.

The Empire corridor is limited by signals to 79 mph top speed. This is not Amtrak's Acela northeast corridor. Traveling 544 miles in 12.5 hours this train averages 43.52 mph with stops... Not by any means is this train considered a high speed rail train... The Maple Leaf is basically a regional day train. There is a reason why the US government itself with the US Postal Service chose to fly the mail instead of continuing using the railroads back during the 1960s. The day the railroads lost their US Mail contracts, that was the very day the railroads shut down their passenger trains. Don't believe me, watch this long video of the end of passenger trains in North Texas (Dallas-Fort Worth). ua-cam.com/video/wj4k8qDAB8I/v-deo.html
