The train trip looked so awesome... now I want to take the train. If I had a job opening, I would hire Brittany. She was friendly, energetic, and loved her job. She was a highlight of your video.
Finally! I've been waiting for someone to do a video on this route. I discovered it once while looking around on Google maps and seeing a train station marked in the middle of the wilderness with absolutely nothing, just trees around it. I could find very little information on it online and very few videos of it. Its like Via rail's little secret!
My Dad always said that route was built to haul grain up to Churchill that was stored in big elevators in the winter, that would then get on ships in the summer, giving prairie grain an alternative route to market because the mountain routes to the west could close in the winter.
This is one of your BEST videos. It's more about the TRIP, not the hotel bathroom. Waiting to see your adventure in Churchill, then the 48 hour return trip back. And enjoyed your Dad coming along for the adventure. Bless his heart.
This reminded me of the trips we took as a family from Mumbai to my Dad’s native place Mangaluru to spend the summer holidays. I loved sitting by the window & watch the world go by.
Sunday morning downunder in Melbourne (we've been set free after 8 months) and here you are (a month ago) enjoying a great rail trip with your dad in the wildest part of your country before your second lockdown. Really looking forward to next week with the polar bears. Loved that you shared the train trip with a couple originally from my part of the world (Aussie accent noticed). They must be real adventurers too. And Britney at 4 in the morning!! She really lightened up the trip - what a great advertisement for ViaRail she is! You were blessed to see the northern lights. The southern equivalent turned up in Tasmania earlier this year. Glad that your dad took the opportunity to share this experience with you. I'm sure he was pleased to tick this adventure off the bucket list before it becomes too difficult to travel in adventure style. Now the next prompt from UA-cam is to check out Pannier P's clip celebrating Puffing Billy's return to the Dandenong Ranges east of Melbourne yesterday, Saturday 28th November. (Pannier P is a young railfan friend and has really taken to UA-cam - he's half your age, Michael!) Looking forward to the Polar Bears next week. Stay safe!

This is fantastic! My grandfather (my fathers father) was born in Winnipeg in 1908 and migrated here to Melbourne Australia in the early 1920’s. my mother’s cousin Mary migrated from Scotland and lived in Saskatchewan and was married there in the 1960’s. Thanks for sharing this, I doubt I’ll ever get near there so it’s good to see this. 🇦🇺
Thank you so much for this video, Mike! I had been waiting many years (before the tracks were washed out) to take this trip and I did it in October 2023. It was absolutely amazing. My favourite part - which I hope you get the chance to experience at some point - was the dome car. It was absolutely gorgeous and enhanced by friends who we met from Thompson that brought blankets on board so that we could have almost complete darkness to see the northern lights, something that had been on my bucket list for a very long time. Everyone who loves a great train trip should take this ride. Look forward to watching more videos on your channel!

Thank you so much for bringing us on your journey! I've always wanted to go further north. The farthest North I've been is Edmonton, but I'd like to go to Iqaluit or something one day. Your dad's advice was on point, and Brittany is amazing! I hope you told her about your channel and she checks out the video to see all the nice comments about her. Such a positive, wonderful spirit. OMG, what a find, I travelled between Winnipeg and Churchill, several times starting in 1963-66 via CN Rail while I served in the RCN. Fortunately, I was accommodated in Sleeper Class with full dining available. This video certainly brought back fond memories. Thank You.
Fun fact: Churchill, MB is located more to the south than St Petersburg, Russia - a city with 5 million inhabitants. Also some other cities more to the north: Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki, Tallinn.
Your dad gives good advice and Churchill should be on everyone's bucket list. I visited about 3 times including staying out at the rocket range(Northern Studies Centre). The people in Churchill are amazing.
The only times in my life where I was awake at 4am is when I was partying and I was shitfaced, stoned, drunk and quite out of it. Kudos to Brittany for being energetic, friendly and cute at this odd time of the day.
Awesome video-thanks for making it. Next time, please consider overlaying a map so we can kinda keep track of the route you're taking. Lovely scenery and great people. Thanks for allowing us to travel virtually!
48 hours! Christ it was only 24 hours years ago. That trip was an eye opener to me. I grew up in Winnipeg but had never been north of Gimli. The scenes along the way of how native people lived will haunt me forever. Just how does one survive besides the tracks in a canvas straight walled tent at 25-35 below plus wind!? I guess in the school or church which looked to be the only decent, warm buildings around. They had their own dangers. I would like to go back and experience the north in a different way but I am old now
Oh gosh, what a wonderful adventure! I really enjoyed that train ride and the people on and off (hi there Brittany!) the train. I live in California, so this all looks very exotic to me! I don’t think I could sit in the train for that long. I’ve been on a US West Coast train for 24 hours, pretty stressful on the joints when you’re no longer young. It’s nice though to travel this way occasionally, I’ve always enjoyed meeting people on the trains. So precious to travel with your Dad! I’m off to watch some more of your videos, you are very talented!
I come back to this video every so often. I always think about your dad's "never say no" outlook :) It's so beautiful and wise. I first watched this video 8 months ago and I still think about what he said :) I hope you both get many more chances to say yes!!!

this journey is one reason why i like living in canada. the other one is the trip from toronto to ottawa on canada's fastest rail service.
Yo mot wrong
You not wrong
A train trip across Canada is on my bucket list
Where "fastest" is of course relative to Canada.
Sad actually
I love Canada! Best country in the world! Cant wait to get back there!
Cheers from Brazil!
Yes, come and pay taxes in Canada. Fifth highest in the world. Economic slavery. A money laundering commie dictator controls Canada.
Love this. Added to my bucket list. Please let us back in Canada!
Love the energy from Brittany - stay safe everyone!!
You know dad was anticipating telling that falafel joke since he first saw it on the menu. Lol.
😂
Yep, just biding his time!
I lived in Winnipeg for a year, when I saw your footage I remember an amazing time of my life, left a part of my soul there, just amazing, thank you.
This video put me in such good spirits! I can't wait to move to Canada and explore all these places. I hope to make many good friends that are as awesome and kind as Britney!! I loved your dad's advice about not saying no, too. It's such a good way to look at life.
Brittney was amazing, as was this video, keep em coming !
Who has been a fan of Down live in 2020 who loves him I do
Thanks Amber!
I love his positivity, I would have been complaining the whole time about how the sleeper and the park car wasn't available for passengers.
Loved here in England
Thank you so much for bringing us on your journey! I've always wanted to go further north. The farthest North I've been is Edmonton, but I'd like to go to Iqaluit or something one day. Your dad's advice was on point, and Brittany is amazing! I hope you told her about your channel and she checks out the video to see all the nice comments about her. Such a positive, wonderful spirit. Don't change, Brit!
You should! And yes, she's watched the video and seen all the love for her here 😊
Awe !!! Thank you!!!!!
I actually would LOVE this trip! Britney is warm and awesome with a great attitude!
You have real talent and bring out the best in people w your enthusiasm and positivity. Can see the apple didn’t fall far from the tree!
Great examples of the difference attitude makes throughout!
Hey Mike another great adventure. Glad to see you spent it with your Father as well .Looking forward to part 2. Have a great evening!
Thanks, you too, Bill!
Always upgrading the foot game and Dad’s response because you invited me 😂👏🏼👍👍. Another, Awesome 🚂 video! Brittney is Awesome! She has a Great personality.
Wow Mr. Downie, after watching this upload, I went for a walk on the overcast but warm beach. Pat-South Padre Island, Texas
Michael, wow! You got to stay at the rocket range?!! So cool!
Can’t wait, love this guys videos. Recently found em. Something about travel vlogs during a paDemic that I love
Welcome aboard!
Your dad's precious. Hold him tight.
That was awesome .glad your taking dad for a adventure. Your rocking the videos, keep it up !!
Thanks Shawn! 👍
I enjoy travel and geography, and as I watched this vlog I split my screen to follow your journey on a map of Canada. What an adventure!
Glad you enjoyed it!
In safer times come visit! We'd love to have you in our beautiful country!
So enjoyed your Dad! He reminds me a bit
of mine - he would have said the same thing (Because you asked😀). Treasure these opportunities! 🚞💺
I would like to go back and experience the north in a different way but I am old now
“I’m gonna have my ‘falafel’ now, I hope I don’t ‘feel awful’ afterwards.”
Love your dad. 🤣
Super trip, that Brittany certainly loves her job and no mistake.....
I literally discovered you days ago and was sad you didn't have a video on this route then you come out with this, keep up the amazing work.
4:33 - Certified dad-joke 😄
We're planning another trip together soon.
@@DownieLive Awesome!!
I loved this so much! Best wishes from a smalltime Scottish UA-camr :)
I wanna be as energetic and positive as Brittany!
I am ashamed to be grumpy about my warm desk job.
@Perry Elyod vitamin D might help 😁
Ikr
The scenery looks beautiful!
Britney is a ray of sunshine and my new favourite person!
I'm HAPPY FOR YOU - to still have your Dad!
I MISS my dear Dad - but am THANKFUL FOR THE PRECIOUS MEMORIES I WILL ALWAYS HAVE - of Special times/Blessings WITH HIM, & our Mom, too!
We also ENJOYED GREAT TRAIN TRAVELS :) on Via Rail & Am Track..... :)
