@@wannabeturbo Hurray for you, but your build quality argument doesn't cut it. there are many smaller and lighter lenses with top notch build quality, and weight does not mean build quality, it just means big and heavy glass. The new Sigma 85 art Fe mount. is almost half the weight of the new Canon 85L. 1195g compared to 625g, and the build quality is top notch. and I will give up f1.2 to have f1.4 and half the weight any day of the week. and that is without even talking price. $2.800 compared to $1.200. Hi Vanessa! I always value your amazing work! I am a professional bird photographer but I wanted to tell you about the RF mount Samyang 85mm f 1.4. It’s very good in case any of your followers would like an inexpensive option. I have some quality L lenses for my work and I can tell you I was impressed with this $700 gem. In case any beginners want a great option. AF works very well on my R6 too, for the most part. Good colors and contrast, sharpness. For my needs I couldn’t justify the amazing RF 85 but this works great also. Thanks!

A very nice introduction to posing, Vanessa.
Posing, for me, was the very hardest part of people photography when I started in the film days when the first time we would see the image and effects of the lens was in the darkroom, days or weeks later. When digital matured it all became easier with the immediate feedback but there remained the problem of communicating what was needed. Mastering the technical aspect of photography is simple but the difference in photographers who consistently have very desirable results and please clients almost always involves easy communications with the subject.
A lot of photographers are not people persons and one reason why they interact with a camera instead of people, it is a shield to hide behind. Working with skilled models, however, is much easier because of a common shortcut vocabulary. When I started working with professional models for catalog and advertising campaigns it seemed to all come together because the skilled models are eager to contribute to the success of the project. After that, I recommended beginning photographers wanting to do portraiture or lifestyle shooting to hire a professional model and tell them before they agree or not, that you are a beginner and want to learn posing, if they are willing, they see you as a potential employer so they might be happy to describe what they are doing and why in the session. It would be the cheapest education on model communications, for a few hundred dollars and a couple hours. Many would not want to bother with beginners but if you are a good student and have paying sessions in the future, a model who cares about her craft will probably accept, knowing you will call her first.
The first thing you learn is that the equipment does not matter as much as manufacturers and hobbyist snobs want you to believe. Model, concept, light/dark, and environment are all free or low cost and have much much more impact on results than camera format or features.

    • @VanessaJoy

You are so right. Communication is everything and it’s NOT easy.

Thank you for this. While I will not downright copy everything here (that wouldn't be very creative, nor helpful), your explanations of WHY you are doing certain things (and what it is you're attempting to achieve with it), is (to me) a lot more helpful than the images themselves (which are more eyecandy, and take that in the best way possible, please :) )
As someone who's decided to more and more specialize at young women in their most vulnerable age and "make them feel beautiful just the way they are" (before society gets its chance to force them into the meatgrinder to become just another boring copy of someone else), and do my utmost to BUILD their confidence, knowing how to accentuate (and to a lesser degree hide) features becomes rather important. Your videos (and not only this one) always makes me stop and think several times along the way. Sometimes rewinding a bit, and talking things over with my wife (who is my photo assistant, and the one who helps the subject nail the pose, because society has decided that a male photographer even pointing from a distance to a fully clothed young girl's body parts to make her turn her hips or shoulders is reason for speculation), you so clearly showing the strength/elegance/vulnerable and feminine/masculine (which combined with some other tricks you've shown gives me the ability to tell my wife "I want a vulnerable, feminine, accentuated hourglass"), makes it very easy to end up with pictures that the vulnerable girl can see that she is REALLY BEAUTIFUL straight out of the camera. No need to edit her, she is perfect as she is (this is a trick I've started to use with low-confidence girls: If they see that the SOOC is good, they don't speculate in "did he edit me pretty?", and thus are less likely to think they need cosmetic surgery to be good enough. Don't ask me why, but it works).
Anyways, what I wanted to say is that your videos help. A lot. Thank you! :)

Whatever pose you put that model in, she will always look good. :) Nice tips, something to learn from. Are you getting both eyes sharp at aperture 1.2 when model is turned? I use the Sony and aperture 1.4 mostly but started to use smaller ap because of patterns and moire in clothes. I actually see this in the EVF, moving in an out helps. But using a high mp camera is not always good for portraits. Nice video, tnx!

New sub! Loving your vids. I would love to see more about posing faces. Or do you even think about faces as much as the whole portrait?

It's just always a JOY to hear the relaxed yet precise way of VANESSA, how she comments on the important things while taking photos! Only sometimes it is difficult for me to decide between the posing model and the photographer model … 😘

I'm a student of movie photography, usually I use my blackmagic to shoot videos, but recently I picked up my "old" canon EOS 4000D (which I know it's not nearly as good as the one you have) because a classmate of mine asked me to made her some pictures. The problem is that in movie it's completly different and i had no clue on how to make someone pose for a pic, this video helped me out. Thanks

Really great job on this video. I'm really learning a lot. Can't wait to put this in practice. If you didn't already make one can you do a video on how to start a photography business?
