Wow, I didn't know Johnny Sinns painted miniatures! Long live the classics.
@@nothingview Ive been called worse 😂😂
Times new Roman is a pretty good description of ultramarines on so many levels XD
It's professional, standard and gets the job done
basic, organized, good looking. Makes sense to me.
The best part about the calling out Squidmar joke is that I literally just watched the collab video where Guy, Emil and Trent pick their favourite models. Like literally the video before this one.
Do you remember the title?

someone finally giving him a wet pallet. it's like seeing a primarch return to 40k
Seriously, I know everyone has their preferences but I always thought it mad he didn't use one. Was honestly a total game changer for me when I came back to the hobby recently, makes handling paints, especially mixing colours SOOO much easier.
This probably isn't going to matter to anyone but I just painted my first ever mini the other day and it just so happened to be an ultramarine!
welcome to the hobby! Enjoy! If you ever have any questions or want some C&c on models, I am sure that a lot of us (inlcuding me) would be glad to help!
My first was Roboute, Ultramariens are a great entry to the hobby ;) #RIPYOURWALLET
Get it!
I painted my first model a bit or two ago and it was an ultramarine as well!
That is great man, I hope you enjoy the hobby as you get into it, and may you have steady hands in your painting journey!
According to some guy told me the reason a lot of things look like they did back in the day is that the guy in charge of photography or the white dwarf editor was unaware he was colourblind so he sent them back for not being vibrant enough until the wood was bright red etc
Even if thats true or not, the ultra bright colors define the style of the era.
Meanwhile, in the 2e cabinet...
Judge Dredd: "Ever feel like we stand out too much with all these 40K models?"
Chaos Warrior: "At least you belong in the distant techno-future, bud. I'm just a guy with an ax."
I am a simple wargamer, I see a new Midwinter Minis video and I click
Truest thing I've ever heard

Same. Guy’s voice is oddly calming after a day of Alaskan mechanics shouting
so say we all
Oh god, that tired comment doing the rounds again, is it?
I’d love to see a modern mini painted in this same style. See them right next to one another.
That would be awesome to see. 👍
I was actually thinking about starting an ultramarine army to do exactly that lmao
Amazing job! I can’t help notice how the sculpting makes the marine look like Robert De Niro.
Finished version looks a bit Eugene Levy to me.
Dunno where your seeing Robert de niro in that model but it's your hobbie
I am glad it's not just me! First thing I thought too

@@Scarytoaster1809 "I've got nipples Inquisitor Greyfax can you milk me?" - The last words of convicted heretic Sergeant De Niro, Ultramarines 3rd company, M41
That marine came out fantastic! Definitely getting me jazzed to start painting up my kill team of retro Chaos Marines.
yes
I never knew Ronald Reagan was an Ultramarine! Lol. Great work Guy!
I apreciated the way you gave us an idea of how many hours ot took to paint this model. I think a time total estimate for projects in future videos would be fun/ encouraging for the painters at home.
Another retro painting, what a treat!
You have a superb talent for painting miniatures...and the ability to record at the same time is very special indeed. Thank you for sharing your secrets and special spells.
Me before I started painting: Oh, this is relaxing content
Me after I started painting: WHY DOESN'T MY ORK ARMY LOOK AS GOOD AS ONE OF HIS MODELS HE TOOK THE SAME TIME FOR AS I DID FOR THE ENTIRE HORDE!?
I really treasure these retro videos. For some reason they have been a reliable source of comfort during really distressing times. For some reason the music and the colors seems to give “early 2000s dvd menu playing to a sleeping room” vibes. Please keep these coming
Whatever happened with the Caleb with Thegamingbeaver?
that looks straight out of an old warhammer magazine! this is so cool looking, amazing model
Oooooh that Squidmar slander! 😂
Hey there Guy! Been watching you for a long time and just wanted to say you helped give me a lot of confidence for my painting. I too am red-green colorblind so I was always a little worried about painting but you have really put my mind at ease. Thanks for the great vids, and keep it up!
"tip twisted to a fine point on your palette"
You should avoid twisting your brush at all costs. It puts a curve on the bristles which will ruin your tips. Draw, then turn, to form a point.
Could you elaborate?
@@little_hunt3r on draw then turn? Draw the brush on the palette as you load it, lift it off the surface and turn it slightly, then draw again. If you have a good tip this is all you need.
@@TylerProvick Ah, so draw it through the paint normally and only slightly turn at the tip?
@@little_hunt3r No turning while drawing. Draw, lift, turn, draw, lift, turn.
Nicely timed. Just about to paint some up. Space crusade box marines almost 30 years old
Goblin Green is an incredible painter. Love his stuff, it really hits in the nostalgia. You did well here Guy. And your sergeant also looks like Harvey Keitel.
2:01 was comedy gold
is this just a meme or is there some traction here? ive felt like squidmar's vids the past 6 months or so have been pretty .. middle of the road, apart from the Manta series (that seems to never have an end?)
@@hairyhulkvideos I agree, they've been kinda meh, but I don't think they're repetitive? I'm not sure what Guy's getting at. (Genuine curiosity, I don't agree or disagree with him I just don't understand)
@@hairyhulkvideos that guy has simply become a professional youtuber who only wants subscribers with easily snackable content. No depth at all. Just entertainment, not really Warhammer anymore tbh
@@NightfallTH I think he was referring to all the painting challenges he does, you know, the ones where he looks super tired in the thumbnail with a crap ton of minis in front of him
22:22 doesnt this look like Robert de Niro in an Power Armour to you?
Love how the Ultramarines look, keep it up
Awesome may I ask, when will the start collecting tournament series continue?
Well, I quite disagree with the snarky comment on the beginning.
Back in the days, in 2nd edition, you had : Utramarines, Dark Angels, Blood Angels and Space Wolves. The other chapters were just a joke, just ideas.
So, you had the choice between the colors blue, dark green, red and greyish blue. Personally, I preferred the blue.
For the more "crunchy stuff" I very likeb the monk robes of the DA, but only metal miniatures, well, I hadn't the money. I'm not into the vampire/angels, the "we are VENGANCE" wasn't for me and the werewolves neither. So, the Ultramarines were my pick. And their story is compelling, even if they are, when I consider it now, too flawless. Paladins are amazing, but perfect paladins lack of peps, on this, I agree. I didn't back in the days, altough.
About the paintjob displayed, I can only applause, by the way...
Everybody's favourite retro mini painter, Johnny Sins!
"It's like seeing a thousand flavors of ice cream and choosing vanilla."
Honestly, vanilla-flavored ice cream is the best thing to compare Ultramarines to.
I mean, Vanilla's the basic flavor of ice cream, but it's also the one that's for everyone. It's the easiest one to like and is most people's first flavor. It works well with most of the stuff you can add to ice cream and still be good, unlike a lot of flavors. You can't put hot fudge on orange swirl and expect it to work.
Now, I am not a huge fan of the "Other Channel" mentioned, but I think it is bloody sad that you have descended into name calling/"callouts" instead of focusing on your own good content. Extremely offputting tbh.
Woohoo i just got 1 Sergeant from ebay! Cant wait to paint it like yours , its so epic, G fn G dude.
What did squidmar do? 🤣(I don't really watch him)
I'm pretty sure it's pronounced Roboute Guilliman, not Roboute Guilliman...
Idk. This whole series was about guy painting retro models with retro paints. Kinda feels pointless with modern paint
I think he looks kinda like Lloyd Bridges in Airplane. Very good.
I knew it. More retro marines!
Ah, the second edition starter set was my first box set! When I were a lad, we didn't have any of those fancy paint brushes, we had to paint our minis with a broom! Paints? No, we made do with jam, food colouring and shaded with puddle water!* 😉
* A vague reference to a Monty Python sketch...
A broom, bloody luxury we had to use sticks and dog hair.....
might try retro blood angels for my tactical squad after seeing this.
@2:51
Wait… If hatty is in the shot filming… then who’s filming hatty filming…. This doesn’t make sense
I’d love if you painted retro salamanders in a later video.
I only wish you had written "ULTRA" on the side of the sword
I'm with GoblinGreen's marine on this one. Thumbs up Guy.
Guy: The theory is you're being so careful to not mess up the perfected bits that you simply don't mess up.
Also Guy painting the pouches: YOU WANNA SEE SOME REAL SPEED???
Guy was one of my go-to UA-cam minipainters. Can't repay him enough. I learned a lot from his speedpainting videos. Fast forward 2 years. I'm teaching/helping people with painting minis.
Now he's my go to UA-camr on how to record superbe videos.
Eons of battle has a good way to do classic bases...... Cat litter
Oh no I'm buying a Windsor and Newton size one now, aren't I? 😍
I know, I feel like it’s almost a sign from the heavens that I need to finally bite the bullet and buy a nice brush.
Been following Will for a while now, so much retro goodness. Great video as always! I really enjoy this sort of 2nd edition gaming goodness quite a lot. Blood Angels next, right?
This was amazing. The miniature looks amazing. Really like that you have ventured out and done new thing. 50 hours is an insane amount of time 🤯🤯🤯🤯 Hopefully you do more paint style series like the Black Stone Fortress or take a Kill Team or War Cry boxes and paint them in a series. Looking forward to the next video. Keep up the good work. 👍👍
Nostalgic overload, Makes me miss Penny’s ad-libs.
1:04 Guilliman (gi-li-man) is dead, GOOLIMAN is forever
Ehrmagerd, this is my favorite series on UA-cam (I have watched the Space Wolves, Dark Angels, and Terminator videos over and over again). Keep up the great work, your videos are awesome - and the background music (that you made yourself if I remember correctly) is so inspiring and imaginative!
that is fantastic .my only nitpick and I know from experience they are a pain to do is the Sgt Ultra symbol for the shoulder should have the red skull on it like the one from the banner. honestly I don't think I could spend 50hrs painting a single mini .I'd have to be batch painting something else .
Fantastic work guy. You're a real inspiration and I tried my first zenithal prime today. it's encouraging to know that even someone of your skill level is still learning things about painting.
I like the new paint wall background!
Intro gave me goosies, you did something right
I would love to see you take on more challenges like this. But in different styles. Like getting the guys from cult of paint, or richard gray over to do some more volumetric style paiting. Anyway. Cheers, this one turned out amazing!
Thank you , Guy .
Yerch!! Undie-smurf's ! Yerch!! Evy-metal !
Good job there Guy ,
🐺
Great job, but I'm sticking with my much more forgiving chaos models and more recently, Hordes trollbloods.
The Winsor & Newton Series 7 Size 1 is on sale atm though, so I'm picking one up. Thanks.
@@sands201 True, but they tend to be dark and dirty and that disguises mistakes us lazy painters make. :)
Ooo where's that brush on sale mate?
I wouldn’t really think of the Ultramarines as the “vanilla” chapter, sure, they’re the poster boys but they have their qualities, I love their lore of trying to sorta be the role models to the other chapters, and how their strict adherence to the Codex Astartes sometimes screws them up. To me it’s a really interesting idea. And also the space roman vibe is absolutely sick, I think they are a unique chapter despite their status as the sort of “template” for other Astartes chapters, but that’s just my two cents.
When I got back into Warhammer earlier this year, I dug out all my old models so I could strip them and give them a proper painting. This guide will help a lot. Thank you.
Hey what lens is that you are using? The sigma 105mm f/2.8 Macro ?
Incredible work! I love the art but I too wouldn’t enjoy that long painting an ultramarine… would love to see similar on one of the Orks from the same set 😇
Screw those Winsor and Newton brushes, and screw anyone who buys them. If you wouldn't buy a scarf made from the produce of unregulated weasel fur farms in China and Russia, you shouldn't buy sable brushes either.
I have always liked the Ultrasmurfs so the more vids the better in my opinion. Great looking mini you painted, love the retro style with modern techniques. Goblingreen is really talanted as well, love the vids.
Beautiful job on this guy. You've given me the push to give this old Raptor Legion scheme I've been sitting on another go!
I'm so happy to see you paint this classic, even as a smƱrf. (BTW, had to say "yes, please!" to the great retro-style shirt.)
I love that new retro midwinter minis logo, are you going to make that into a shirt? cuz I want one
edit: should have just kept watchimg the video
That period, "Midwinter Minis" logo is great (legally distinct 😂😂😂)
0:52 "The Boys in Blue are considered by moist people..."?
This was a very different painting experience.
I ought to do this with one of my Bretonnians!
On your point about picking the UltraVanilla with so many flavors available...
To me, there's almost a kinda double-hipster effect to it. When *everyone* around you picks something else in an effort to be different, picking the blue boys *becomes* the defiant counter-pick, y'know? Depends on your environment, of course. While I, myself, hopelessly gravitate toward whatever's least popular, I can still respect someone who just unabashedly loves the poster boys.
Squidmar is so dull now, just rinse and repeat 'challanges' MWM, 52 Miniatures and EonsofBattle pretty much all I watch nowadays.
"Unsullied by self-aggrandizement" GW forgot this bit
"And you're the most important person here"
Awww, guy!~ :3c
Just reminding me while I will NEVER have the patience to be a great painter. A real treat. Thank you for the extra detail you give in your videos.
I can understand why people liken picking Ultramarines to seeing a million options and picking the most basic, uninteresting one.
But as a child I was introduced to 40k with Ultramarines, and they've always been my favourite faction. To me they don't feel boring, they feel familiar. They're my default, my old reliable, the friend I know that will have my back through thick and thin. Other colour schemes look cool, but there's something *right* about a space marine in cobalt blue and yellow. Although I love all the armies I collect, my Ultramarines still hold that childlike place in my heart of "the best".
That was cool and all but you could have done it one the old magnus Calgar, or even better 2ND EDTIONG GHAZ AND MAKARI
Hey, I saw your 1st Mini Painting Tutorial, and I was wondering what your take would be on a space marine armed with a necron's gauss flayer? You don't need to do a full video, but if you made a short, that would be much appreciated :)
I'm not sure if you've kept with the wet palette? If you have I think a video eventually of your experiences, adjusting to paint with it, etc would be interesting. Especially since at this level every other mini painter already uses one and their starting advice is always, "Just get one of these, dummy."
There's a lot of, "I got my first airbrush!" sort of videos, and plenty of beginner guides on what to do with a wet palette. But there aren't so many, "I finally started using a wet palette" videos.
Not sure I get the Squidmar joke. Squidmar has some of the most varied content and projects and some of the best production among UA-cam creators in the hobby space. Feel like Midwinter Minis has been stagnating and doing the same old thing for a couple of years now.
I've always viewed Ultramarines as the Manchester United of Space Marines. Definitely the default choice for a lot of noobs.
I find it funny that "vanilla" is considered a bland and boring flavor. When in fact for a long time it was a very rare and luxurious flavor due to how labor intensive it is to harvest the vanilla seeds.
Then came artificial flavoring and ruined it all. But man real vanilla ice cream is amazing. I'd take that over all the other flavors any day of the week... except pistachio. Long live the Lion!
I remember I watched this video at some point and thinking I can’t believe you live in Colchester. Then next day I saw you walking in the park near the bridge. 😂
Nice to see famous faces loving Warhammer...Now, Johnny Sins...
Jesus loves you, God loves you. I want to tell you that you have the opportunity to have eternal life, that you can live in peace and love, if you only surrender your life to Jesus Christ. I hope you can gain faith, repent, and be baptized in Jesus’s name, especially before it’s too late to when Jesus returns. God bless you
I really miss the 40k retro vibe. GW should have done 30K in this oldskool style.
Hmm. I really WANT to love the new logo, and it's good, but... while it's nostaglia-tastic, it's not as cool as the old one!
Bro.
You think will paints better than you,
I think You paint better than me, my coworkers think I paint better than them.
We all try to learn to get better, The Cycle continues.
Might just be me. but I dont think the music fits the video. Sounds strange...eary noises like in the 7:30 mark. Amazing content as usual
What brush are you using for the edge highlighting? I use citadel brushes for most of my painting but I find them difficult to edge highlighting with, so I'm looking for recommendations for other bushes.
Just bought the hoodie! Should be here mid October; perfect time for when Florida finally drops below 80 degrees freedomheit 😂
Hiiiisssss begon with your modern paint!!!!
Also while I'm here could you possibly do a video on the Iron hands guy?
Could someone let me in on the Squidmar joke? I don't watch Squidmar, and the joke flies over my head. 😞
Well done mate, Looking good and well worth the effort, keep it up 😁
I saw your post on Reddit but didn't realize it was you until I saw this video's thumbnail. wicked job as always Guy!
awww, the "default" flavor of ice cream is just.. cream. Vanilla is wonderful! hehe
Love your stuff massive inspiration
I'm planning on painting and playing with the doom legion (ultramarines successor chapter), what models do you think I should put in this army ?
Well that isn't proven wrong by numerous chapters being self agrandizing ass holes who look down on baseline humans at all. :p
