Unfortunately, pain; I had to fight for every moment. My mum hated this stuff so I was always kind of sneaking around. She tolerated it more than video games, but not by much. My nostalgia from that time is deeply tinged with anger and depression. I spent most of the video crying out of regret.

Well fuck. Wasn't expecting to cry while watching a midwinter video.
My dad was the one that got me and my brother into the hobby. I'll always remember him taking us to games day and him building us a baneblade tank each out of cardboard.
He died three years ago, and never got the chance to meet my daughter. I've got so many of his 80s models that need painting, but can never find the push to paint them.
Thanks for the video dude, sorry about your dad!!

My goodness. Right in the feels, I let this video play to just listen to while driving to work this morning and had to steer clear of the fast lane because I cried so hard. Very well chosen words about loved ones and nostalgia - they really hit home. @MidwinterMinis I am sorry about your dad and that he wasn‘t able to meet your kids. Such things are often (mistakenly) taken for granted in life, but everything is quite fragile really and one can be thankful if all is alright when waking up each morning. All the best!

I lost my mom 10 years ago, and I'm in the process of losing my dad as we speak, he's not doing well with cancer. My parents were my biggest supporters of my painting hobby from the 80's until now. My dad still reacts with joy when I finish a new model. This video made me cry so much as a 54 year old father of 3 myself. I've never felt the need to be 15 and painting my first warhammer again so badly. Thanks so much for this video, I'm sure your dad is as proud of you as our hero Mike McVey is to all of us who coveted those books like they were the first printing of the bible.

As a similar age, I got the same box set one year for Christmas and was hooked. This is a beautiful video in commemoration of your dad, and it brought me to tears.
While I’ve not lost my dad, he is in hospital as I type this, recovering from an operation which saved his life. I moved away from home to England 12 years ago and I miss him dearly. Nostalgia of my happy childhood memories, similar to yours shown in the video hit me like a truck. As a father to a 3.5 year old boy, I can’t wait to share my love of miniatures with him too. Maybe he’ll have some sort of similar reflections of me when he’s old and I’m gone, that way, a part of me will live on in him, just as your dad does in you.

This really hit me in the feels Guy. We are pretty much the same age and got into the hobby at a similar time. Although I’m a Guard man, the very first GW minis I ever painted were mono pose space marines, brought for me by my Mum at the local high street model shop. Funny enough I went for the colour scheme in this video (well, my approximation of it anyway. 😄) I’ve always had a soft spot for Blood Angels ever since then. I’ve got two girls myself, one of which my Mum never got the chance to meet. She died a couple of years ago and even my eldest was too young to remember her. So I feel your pain and the desire to connect the generations and keep their memory alive. Love the channel and your work mate. Your Dad would be proud.

These Blood Angels look amazing! Honestly, the super-saturated, cartoonish look of the magazines and catalogs of the 90’s always looked better to me than the “official“ painting schemes, maybe because I always thought of miniatures as toys (I never played miniature war games, but I liked to paint tanks.)
“Nostalgia is the ache of happiness remembered”-wow that’s good. I lost my dad 30 years ago (he was 57, the same age that I am now). Because he was a history buff and an educator, he loved the WW2 models and minis that I painted for my dioramas. My best memories are of him teaching me about history, especially about WW2 battles and the tanks and planes used by all sides. I learned so much from him that I tested out of courses at school when teachers realized that they weren’t teaching me anything. He was on the autism spectrum (as am I) and we had a difficult time connecting emotionally, and I ended up equating knowledge sharing with love. This video has reduced me to tears.

such a touching tribute. wasn't expecting such emotion but it was wholly welcomed.
though I'm not as old as you I did get into the game around the same age. And as I find myself getting back into it close to a decade later I am truly appreciative to my former self and my parents for never selling or giving away my old orks. as I'm buying new miniatures to prepare for 10th edition it makes me feel whole that these new miniatures get to take the field with the first boy I ever painted. And even though I see countless flaws in these older models be it mould lines or paint imperfections, I can't bring myself to fix these issues because they represent my younger self.
Loved every video in this series, and can't wait for more!

Great video, we're of a similar age and second edition was my first real foray into Warhammer, though there was a copy of Rogue Trader lying around... :) My dad bought me my first miniatures when I was 10, he drove a 90 minute round trip to pick up some Space Marine chaplains, techmarines and Eldar Dire Avengers, because that's what you do when you don't know what these little metal space men toys are :) My dad never understood what I saw in 40k, but he knew I loved painting and always encouraged me. We lost my dad 5 years ago as well and I got back into the hobby shortly afterwards. Now painting is my go to method of getting through whatever I'm struggling with. Thanks for the nostalgia trip and reminding us how nostalgia isn't a fault, it's a way of remembering the good times :)

I lost my grandfather a mere two days ago, and remembering all the times we would go visit just to say hello, or the summer that I helped him work on his plane... It really aches to think back of all the good times we had together as a family. I'll always keep those moments close to my heart, as you do with memories of your dad. Thanks so much for the video.

Such a brilliant searies. You should be proud of what you have done and all you have achieved.
Nostalgia did it for me too, second edition was such a part of my life that returning to it 25 plus years later still has the young child in me giddy with excitement.
Don't stop the searies. There is so much love for second edition it would be a shame not to get a dreadnought painted up instead of the cardboard cut out. That's the model that truly did it for me.

Sitting here painting my own Warhammer, I was watching youtube on the side until your video caught my attention. I got to play my first game of Combat Patrol with my friend, and even knowing his mini's weren't complete or even if we were using a normal table with cups and bowls as terrain, we still had an absolute blast. Watching this video made me realize that I'm doing exactly what you did as a young kid with your dad, and I am so incredibly thankful for you making this video and sharing your heart-touching words with the whole community. I hope to one day look back at the memories just like you get to. With all of one's heart, I am sorry for the loss of your Father, and thank you so very much for all you do for this community, and for your friends and family. You rock.

    Awesome, just awesome.
We seem to be very alike, as i got the 2nd Ed boxset from my folks around 10 years old in the mid 90s, and i also painted them as Blood Angels (i still think that look is my fav look for any SM Chapter). Ive justed turned 40 and have a 5yo daughter who loves to be questioning me about what im painted. I can totally relate to all that, and the nostalgia this video has kicked up in me.
Im very lucky as i still have my dad, despite coming within a gnats hair of losing him back in 2020 (but the act of strangers who must have been heaven sent). We can only try to be the dads they were to us and build on the examples they set, as well as treasure the times we have together. Im sure your kids will with you, as i know mine does with me. And who knows, maybe they'll want to paint Blood Angels too!

The power of nostalgia is great indeed. Makes me glad I can still talk to the friends I say around talking and playing Warhammer with 20odd years ago.

Truly heartfelt. I'm very much with you. My first models were the 2nd edition box set and my first ever game was with my grandad on his kitchen floor and I painted Blood Angels too, so seeing these and the meaning they had to you it's quite profound. To echo the sentiments of your video with my own experience.......miss you grandad.

Thank you so much Guy, you are definitely that paint father for this community!!!

Mentoring people while doing things you love is a gift. Those connections and common experiences really are what makes a community great. Although we may never meet in person, you have inspired and enabled me along with so many more ! Your channel was the spark that got me painting and showing my kids the value of spending time together learning and making something cool. Lots of cool things. Quite the tribute to your Dad.

Amazing to watch the amount of steps required to make these miniatures as impressive as you have.
I came here for nostalgia as well, used to play warhammer as a child very badly with friends with that same boxed set.
As others have mentioned I did not expect the amount of emotion I’d feel watching this either.
Your dad would be so proud watching you do this now. People die twice the day they take their last breath and the last day they are spoken of, so he’s still very much alive. ❤

You have been my biggest influence. Mainly because you were my first influence. Your videos gave me the confidence to paint minis, to buy a camera, to start video editing. So much of what I love about my creative life, photography, videography, mini painting, oil painting, video editing, 3D printing. It was all enabled by getting into Warhammer, which was only possible thanks to you. Yes objectively speaking, there will always be better painters, better videographers, better Warhammer content. However, your name still deserves to be known as one of the greats. I’m sure I’m not the only one here leaving a heartfelt comment about how you changed our lives. The thousands of us who owe our newfound passion to you serve as proof. You rock, your passion is a unique sort that I try to hold for my creative endeavors. Thank you Guy, I and many others are so thankful for the path you inspired us to walk.

Very moving end and I shed a few tears! We are about the same age and the feelings are quite the same about memories of long lost better times.
I'm not a dad yet but I do enjoy teaching my nephews things I loved to do as a kid and trust me when I say it , this is like rediscovering the joys of the hobby for a second time through their own eyes! And I hope you'll still experience it from time to time as they grow up and hopefully teaching it to their kids long after that!
    Kudos!

Was honestly putting off watching this because I saw the comments before anything. I lost my Dad in 2020, and in an effort to escape life, I decided to take up Warhammer. You were the first video I watched back then and my first ever channel subscribe and as the saying goes, "the rest is history." Losing your dad (or mom) is something I didn't expect to experience this early in life (we're the same age) and being "orphaned" has a way of making you feel alone in a way that's hard to explain. So, with all that said, from across the pond, thanks for your videos that helped me through a very dark time and for a better appreciation of the hobby and on the flipside, I'm terribly sorry for your loss. I hope MWM was and continues to be an escape for you as it does for a lot of us.
