hey bro, in your opinion which is better for editing on a Final Cut Pro? Have a 15' 2014 macbook pro and it freezes up a bit when dragging long clips, recording audio, and things like that
To be fair, boot and opening up applications at the beginning relies mostly on the SSD, as the SSD read speeds are typically the bottle neck. Since apple is making their own processor, and know exactly what is in the machines they’re building, they can optimize the boot/loading of applications. The render speed on the M1 was likely bottle necked by the difference in ram, so that’s also not a fair test.. at the end of the day, apple is going to optimize the crap out of their chips, raw processing power is obviously lower than intel or amd, but the hardware optimizations that they get from making the mb, processor, graphics card etc are really playing a huge role.
@@auroraskydreams166 to be honest, I use my windows work station for 3D graphics that I use for game dev - blender, and I have not even tried using a mac for it because the rest of game dev is much easier on Windows than Mac in general.. I think there is more than that to it, I've got a 2013 macbook air, and when I wipe it each year, it can do boot and open safari faster than both of those. But give it 6 months of use, and its slower. To do an apples to apples comparison (ahhh puns) you'd need to freshly wipe each of the machines. At that point I'd agree with you whole heartedly as not only do they have faster SSDs in the M1 MacBooks, they are have more direct access.
The i9 was basically as good as you could get on a laptop before the M1that’s why. No one but Apple really thought Apple’s first chipset for laptops was going to be this powerful.
Wouldn’t the RAM difference from the i9 MacBook make a difference in video editing? That’s probably why it lost that round cause it has double the RAM and that matters when exporting as well as so many other things
He also failed to mention the 13 inch M1 has no dedicated GPU while the 16 inch i9 has a Radeon card even at base models. Video rendering, scrubbing, and editing all rely on a good GPU
Great comparison, but I think matched RAM for your comparison units would really isolate the processor effect. Any chance the iMovie export times were affected RAM capacity of the machine (I don't export video, but am curious how this test might translate to spreadsheet work)?
Nice video. I going to buy a second hand i9 simply because I can't afford the M1 16 inch. The 13 inch m1 that is within my price tolerance is to small. I prefer more screen real estate. Nice video it made my decision much easier 🙏
Great video, that being said, I would argue that this is not a fair test as the 15" has 32gb of ram that would dramatically help for exporting time. I tested a fully loaded M1 MBP and a fully loaded 16" and for rendering the 16" inch came out slightly above and for exporting they were the same. You also put them next to each other, one could argue that the 15" did not get the coolest air and therefore could not max out the i9 as that matching is already having difficulties cooling the i9 beast. I would love to continue this conversation.
I would also say that both macs appeared to already have files and apps on them. the i9 seemed to have more files and even a second account on it which could account for the slightly slower boot time and load speeds.
@@justinkaufman495 2 years later but... Also, youre talking about DDR4 2400 MHz chip array VS DDR5 6400 MHz integrated/onboard CPU RAM. boot time is irrelevant, we tend not to boot from cold. App load times is fast on both. Wake times are great on both. Benchmarks are pretty meaningless. Real world tests when using the things that take a long time in the apps is the only important thing. The i9 took this test.
A few things to consider: The i9 MacBook has 2 noisy fans and runs extremely hot under load and thermal throttles very badly And some apps aren't updated for M1 chips.
Unfair to test a machine used for 2 years vs an almost new machine. A machine already used for 2 years, thermals have already started taking their toll, very much the case for i9. My i9 just got roasted a few days back for the same reason.
I don’t think the rendering was fair since video rendering takes a lot of RAM usage, you have 4 times the ram as the M1 on your i9 which is probably why it got done so much faster
You certainly can! I’m not sure if After Effects has been written to run natively on Apple Silicon yet, but it will run via Rosetta 2. The only concern would be RAM. After Effects is extremely RAM intensive. You’ll still be able to get things done, but you might be limited with how much of your project can be played back in realtime. My recommendation would be to get a scratch disk to use with AE, ideally something that’s flash storage and even more ideally something that’s Thunderbolt and flash storage.

@@EShaver 8gb isnt too bad considering you can get a refurbished 8gb mini for $579 USD. the cheapest you can get a 16gb (since you cant get it refurbished) is for $829 USD from apple edu store. so you are paying 42% more money (or 28% more if you buy new) for the ram upgrade which only seems to really effect render speed which many will say isnt a big deal since you can multitask or do something else while you wait anyhow. the real and more annoying time you would lose is when the timeline scrubbing cant keep up or if there is anything that would slow down the editing process. the 8gb model seems to give no issues there so i think it is also a really good purchase, especially if you get it refurbished on ebay (or for $10 more on the apple online store).

I've personally noticed better performance when using windows with my MBP (it's been that way since as long as I can remember and as far back as my original nonretina 2012 MBP with a Core i7.) another thing is thermals. in terms of thermal performance apple liked their reputation for sleek quiet devices meaning that the fans don't kick on until you're already throttling. this isn't a problem for the lightweight low power M1 chip which is designed by Apple for their machines. comparing these 2 processors is like comparing apples to oranges. they really just aren't the same thing.

Still, I am very happy with my big and luscious 16 inch MPB and it hasn't actually become any slower, the new MacBooks have just got more powerful - this laptops wipes the floor with what I need it to do....
Where do you see it's faster ? It takes 1 less second to open stuff but twice the time for actual work on Final Cut
The i9 is faster when plugged in in almost all circumstances, the M1 is faster on battery power and for apple native apps

You provided a good comparison with what you had available. Of course this isn't exactly "apples" to "apples", but it is helpful nevertheless. I was hoping to see how Photoshop runs, but I can get a pretty good idea that the M1 will be a better choice for that. Thanks.

@@LelynMac hahahaha that's the real talk
How about using M1 Max new Chip for Animation and 3D software purposes ?
@@auroraskydreams166 to be honest, I use my windows work station for 3D graphics that I use for game dev - blender, and I have not even tried using a mac for it because the rest of game dev is much easier on Windows than Mac in general.. But that’s my area of interest so thats what I know. Sorry I couldn’t be of much help 🤷♂️
I don’t understand why the i9 is over a thousand dollars more if the m1 is superior
It should run faster complex programs
The i9 was basically as good as you could get on a laptop before the M1that’s why. No one but Apple really thought Apple’s first chipset for laptops was going to be this powerful.

Wouldn’t the RAM difference from the i9 MacBook make a difference in video editing? That’s probably why it lost that round cause it has double the RAM and that matters when exporting as well as so many other things
He also failed to mention the 13 inch M1 has no dedicated GPU while the 16 inch i9 has a Radeon card even at base models. Video rendering, scrubbing, and editing all rely on a good GPU
@@cloud9821 i mean thats the whole point of the m1 macbook, its gpu and cpu
So if you had 32 gigs of ram on the M1 it would completely smoke the shit of the Intel. Do I have that right? lol
not really, risc proccesors do not use as much as ram.
Great comparison, but I think matched RAM for your comparison units would really isolate the processor effect. Any chance the iMovie export times were affected RAM capacity of the machine (I don't export video, but am curious how this test might translate to spreadsheet work)?
Yes i do that shizz 24/7 32 gb better than 8gb of ram
This test is really only showing how fast the SSD can dump data into the RAM that it has access to. To really test these two, he needs to render something. He'll find that the i9 is about on par with the M1 at a much heavier power draw.
@@jameysummers1577 yeah since then I've bought a 2019 i5, and I haven't had any preformance issues running windows, and beamNG for days. It heats up a little, but after mapping the fans to kick on at a reasonable temperature instead of the 90°C apple had it set to I haven't had heat issues.

boot time is irrelevant, we tend not to boot from cold. App load times is fast on both. Wake times are great on both. Benchmarks are pretty meaningless. Real world tests when using the things that take a long time in the apps is the only important thing. The i9 took this test.
A few things to consider: The i9 MacBook has 2 noisy fans and runs extremely hot under load and thermal throttles very badly
And some apps aren't updated for M1 chips.
You forgot the most important aspect of the M1 which is the power draw which must be less than half the Macbook I9
as a musician there's a tonne of hard/software that doesn't like the M1 chip yet.

Can i go with macbook air m1 chip for after effects?
You certainly can! I’m not sure if After Effects has been written to run natively on Apple Silicon yet, but it will run via Rosetta 2. The only concern would be RAM. After Effects is extremely RAM intensive. You’ll still be able to get things done, but you might be limited with how much of your project can be played back in realtime. My recommendation would be to get a scratch disk to use with AE, ideally something that’s flash storage and even more ideally something that’s Thunderbolt and flash storage.

The M1 was made to be used with low power. It runs the same whether it's plugged in or not. You've severely handicapped the i9 CPU and it's not even performing at half its speed. Plug it in and rerun the tests. Plug them both in and rerun the tests and I guarantee you'll have a much different experience.

Yes. There’s another review video where render times are nearly half on the 16gb model. Unfortunate if he was supplied an 8gb. Silly if he purchased it instead. Definitely a RAM bottleneck.
@@EShaver 8gb isnt too bad considering you can get a refurbished 8gb mini for $579 USD. the cheapest you can get a 16gb (since you cant get it refurbished) is for $829 USD from apple edu store. so you are paying 42% more money (or 28% more if you buy new) for the ram upgrade which only seems to really effect render speed which many will say isnt a big deal since you can multitask or do something else while you wait anyhow. the real and more annoying time you would lose is when the timeline scrubbing cant keep up or if there is anything that would slow down the editing process. the 8gb model seems to give no issues there so i think it is also a really good purchase, especially if you get it refurbished on ebay (or for $10 more on the apple online store).

to be fair the M1 mac seemed to have less files and one less user account on it. also the M1 chip is designed specifically for MacOS whereas the i9 is multiplatform.
