Yes they are excellent. That and my disdain for small screens when trying to program are the two reasons that I will be keeping my 16 until the apple silicon version comes out. Although, looking at what the 13-inch can do, I am already impressed and if they sold it in a 16-inch chassis, I would probably buy it today. Although, eight of the high performance cores should be excellent and I'm betting the TDP is quite a bit higher as well as having a larger GPU so the 16 in should be a monster.
You don't know how much I appreciate the thoroughness of all of your comparisons. I retired my 16" MBP that I speced to the 2.3ghz i9, 32gb ram, and Pro 5500M so it is now powering the wife's work station. I didn't do any thorough testing for comparison but after using my M1 MB Air in Final Cut AND PP I might be a little salty that I bought the MBP and it never really wowed me. No, it doesn't export a video as fast but the editing and timeline is silky smooth and the portability makes it a clear winner for me.
That's not true at all. I'm not an Intel fanboy, but Intel (and also AMD) build x86 architecture CPUs. That's a complete other architecture for processors. You can't really compare them. Not really, I use it for coding and it enough, no need to edit 4k videos, commonly these comparisons are aimed to people to works on audiovisuals but not everyone uses an MBP for this purpose (Remember that MaxTech said that MBP 16 was insane, and then we have this video saying the opposite just to have views).
Intel 16” is like that student who studies whole year and scores 80% marks while M1 13” is like that back-benchers who studies only 2 days before exam and yet scores 75%. If you think 16 just beats 13 however efficiency is just out of question for Intel.
Don’t worry. You are not crazy. They are two brothers. Yes, now everything makes sense. And no, his voice didn’t magically change just because he has beard🥸
Even if you can find a brand new 16” like he has for 1/2 the price, you will be getting a laptop with less performance than a brand new 13” or even air. If you need the screen size, go for it. But that’s what you’re paying for.
You want to pay a huge apple tax to have the best, go right ahead. But that fact remains, buying used, your buying a mac that was worth 2-3x the price a little while back, which still could have 4 years or more of life left. Your buying the same machine that a few years ago apple advertised as the absolutely best they had. If you have a 6 year old mac or are money conscious, buying a very good performing intel based mac may not be the highest performing out there , but it's probably still MORE than enough to get the job done. Just my 2 cents.
Vadim, Max, and everyone else involved, thank you for all these videos. This is wild to see and I am impressed. I guess it's time for me to start selling all my older Macs.
same i love the bigger screen size, but the M1 is too good not to get in my opinion. I just ordered a baseline M1 MBP 13", until the 16" comes out and ill trade it in
The next 16 " will have the m1 chip with more cores (m1x, 12 core, double the amount of performance cores), a mini led display and thanks to that also a 1080p webcam and the battery will probably last 25-30 hours 🤤
Everyone is so high on the M1 13", so I'll be the one to look at non-obvious cons of the 13" M1 as of February 2021: 1) Only runs Big Sur - does not run Catalina. 2) Can't run Bootcamp. You'll need work-arounds to run Windows 10. 3) Doesn't support all of the third-party apps/plug-ins that the Intel version does. (This alone makes it a no-go for people who rely on such apps). 4) Is effectively more expensive for bargain hunters (I found the base i7 16" for 1,600 open box/new, but the Mac Pro M1 with 16GB RAM is $1910 if you qualify for the education store discount, and good luck finding it on the secondary market, and you'll have to wait a few weeks to receive it from Apple). 5) 16" has better internal speakers. 6) 16" has the option for a much better graphics card. This can be an expensive upgrade, but worth it, if this is a potential bottleneck for you (e.g. you run graphics-intensive programs). It's only $100 or so to upgrade the i9 model to the 5500M 8 core, and then you have an 8 core graphics card like the one in the M1. Or you can pony up for the HBM2 one. I don't think the M1 will support an egpu, whereas the 16" will. 7) It's obvious that the 13" M1 only has two ports vs. four on the 16", but man can this be an issue for a lot of people. You'll have one port available while charging. 8) You'll probably be dealing with more teething issues on the bleeding edge than you will be on a chip architecture that has been around for a long time. 9) Many advantages of the M1 will never come into play for the average user. Better battery life is the one significant upgrade for the average user, at the cost of great speakers, etc. Professional users will often be better off with a desktop for most things - serious Avid editors use insanely powerful desktops, not laptops. 10) The i9 16" has 8 cores, just like the M1, so the performance of the i9 16" is better than the i7 model 16" for multi-core performance. (M1 is still probably better, but not by as much). 11) M1 13" is limited to 16 GB of RAM. I think the M1 uses RAM more efficiently, but I don't think it will outclass the 32 GB or 64 GB RAM you can get on a 16". 12) It's harder to find "fixes" and work-arounds for brand new technology. This applies to Big Sur too, and you're stuck with Big Sur, if you buy an M1. I love the M1, and it's exciting and great to see Apple turning in this direction. However, there are a lot of use cases where the 2019 16" will be better and cheaper, and some use cases where the M1 13" will be completely inadequate, such as certain graphics-intensive or high-RAM uses. The 13" M1 is definitely more limited in terms of compatibility, ports, storage options, OS options, graphics cards options, and RAM, and most likely takes more tweaks than the 16" to run correctly. A lot of people treat the 13" M1 as if it is going to be hooked up to external displays anyway, so then why not get the more powerful and cheaper Mac Mini M1? Another option is to wait for the 14" or 16" M1X, which I'm guessing will have lots of goodies that make the 13" look terrible in comparison (although you'll pay for it). Sure, you can hook external speakers up to the M1, hook up an ssd, hook up an external display... oh wait, nope, you'd run out of ports, and in any case, if you don't mind carrying around a bunch of stuff that you have to hook up to your computer in order to have what you want, just get a Mini M1 - it's actually smaller than the 13" M1 anyway. (Note: You can get a dock and do other things to work around some of the port issues). Personally, I hate being on the bleeding edge, especially with Apple. I avoid updating my Iphone's IOS until I have a chance to see all the bad things the update has done, and the one time I violated this rule I had the battery replaced because I thought it had gone bad, but nope, it was just a now-notorious IOS update that had a negative impact on battery performance. For a tech person who wants maximum performance in specific areas, I can see why the 13" M1 is a good choice. But for a non-tech person who wants maximum ease of use and compatibility, the 16" is often a much better value, even though it has louder fans, much shorter battery life, and gets hotter.
1. What’s wrong with Big Sur. 3. Rosetta 2; you can run all intel apps, 4.You can buy the Air it gets similar performance. 7. you can buy a dongle you get like 4 more ports 12. This technology is not new, it’s the same technology that has been in iPhones and iPads for the last decade, everything excluding boot camp work with the M1.
@@ianshyu Thank you for your comment. 2. From what I hear, Rosetta 2 has its issues when trying to run Windows software. Users of Bootcamp prefer Bootcamp for that, and you can't run Bootcamp on an M1 Mac. 7. Yes, you can mess with dongles, but if you want more Thunderbolt ports, they aren't that cheap, and you have to deal with dongles to get the same ports you'd have built in to a 16" Mac. 12. I'm afraid you're mistaken. The A14 chip in the new iPhone 12 pro is the first to use the 5nm process used with the M1 chip, and the A14 chip is not identical to the M1 chip.
@@myblacklab7 2. I’m talking about Mac software, I believe all Adobe apps, can run in a M1. 7, a adapter cost about $100 and it will still be cheaper than a new 16”. 12. The ARM technology is not new. Apple has been developing it and working on it for the past decade.
@@ianshyu Those apps run through Rosetta, don't they? This is an extra layer of programming that can cause issues. 7. Where can you find a $100 adapter with four Thunderbolt slots? I'm curious! 12. The 5 nm process is new. They can't stop bragging about how new it is. In fact, they had so many chips with failed cores that they sold a 6-core version of the Mini, which was just an 8-core version with two cores disabled due to the fact that one or more of them didn't work correctly.
I have a 15' Macbook pro and was about to upgrade to the 16 inch but ended up ordering the new M1 13 inch. I totally agree with his tests. It looks like everyone running these tests is getting the same results. I unfortunatelly can't wait for the 16 inch M1 to come out next year. Great video.

@@warlockhaseo3642 m1 is not ready yet! for full stack development, there is hiccups from day 1 and you shouldn't be treated as beta tester after spending a more then thousand dollar , you need a machine which is ready at day 1, and for that Intel will be that for next 2-3 years, after that you can sell of that intel one and get m3 with full apps support. @@LileshJadav If you don't need the 16 inch you could just get a second hand 13 inch MBP for a lot cheaper because people are selling cheap now. 2-3 years later the MBA will be twice as fast as your Intel 16 inch so it wouldn't worth much.
i just got the 16 inch mbp over the m1 because of harddrive space, ram, and the larger screen. still pretty amazing what apple has done tho. im not sure if i quite trust it yet for heavy duty professional stuff, but the M1 has a very promising future. If they had offered the M1 with a 16 inch screen with 1TB SSD and 32 gb of RAM i wouldve gotten it. Also not being able to bootcamp is a big pain in the ass.
Why is it a mistake? I have the 16" inch as well. To be honest, I tried the M1 in the Apple Store and it feels the same. If I would ask you, are you really a guy who uses Final Cut Pro on a daily basis? Everyone on here pretends they are either a musician or a video editor. Not gonna lie, the M1 performs really well in those fields. But other than that, you don't feel a difference in using it. Wow, its 4 degrees warmer what a result. Its 10 seconds faster, wow! Don't focus too much on consumerism, you very fortunate with your purchase, remember that. Cheers.
This is a perfect example of how Benchmarks don’t tell the entire story. The 16” was only slightly better in certain benchmarks but real world performance the M1 really shines.
@@MaxTechOfficial I chalked it up to all of you being very tired from the countless hours of testing and video production you have been doing over the last couple of weeks. It is greatly appreciated. @@hf2943 The peak performance is nearly identical but the MBP has fans where the MBA does not, so the MBA will throttle itself after about 10 minutes of max performance whereas the MBP can go full speed pretty much indefinitely.
@@PromotedPawn it also doesn't seem like the M1 MBA throttles as much or for as long as an Intel machine (which is crazy because it got no fans) It's just a no brainer to get the M1 unless you depend on the totally unsupported apps.
A more accurate version of this video is just an apple chip jumping up and down on Intel's head, repeatedly kicking the poor i9 chip in the groin, and laughing in Memoji.
Woooooord I just did the biggest change my nvidia/Corsair pc recently died ( 2014-2021 ) and I finally decided to invest in a Mac book pro 13” as I use A LOT of Logic Pro x and it’s hilarious I charge like once every 2 days but now that I’m more used to the whole laptop thing again I get like 3-4 days 😂😂😂😂 it’s actually amazing I never thought apple could blow my mind and they definitely did it this time with the 12 pro max and the M1 it’s kinda overwhelming sometimes 😅😅
The only thing that’s keeping me from selling my 15” MBP is the lack of the two additional TB3 ports on the M1 model, which I need tom run my entire setup. As soon as Apple puts out a model with four ports I think it will be a no brainer for me to sell my current one together with the eGPU and make the switch. Numbers are just ubelivable...
I got the 16 inch pro back in 2018, it’s slowed down a little but honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if it lasted another 5 years. I do plan on switching to a larger M1 macbook when that’s available as I use high amounts of CPU producing music
Nice video, as always. It would be nice if you could make some tests with more graphics in Final Cut Pro and some 2D and 3D scenes in Motion 5 with and without Motion blur. I think that could be the only cases where the Macs with AMD GPUs should be faster.
Apples been working on the M1 for nearly a decade and has been poaching former intel and AMD employees, etc for years. Glad it payed off, it’s time to bury intel.
In defence of the 16 inch, I wonder how much performance may have been lost if you didn't simply pick to keep it plugged in? I don't think it'd be much better, but people often say MacBooks have a better time when running with power plugged in?
I don't understand why they didn't put the M1 inside the 16" too. Few people are going to buy the $2000 laptop, when you can get identical/better performance on the $1000 model that's just as new but with a slightly smaller screen.
What a great real-world benchmark test suite! Sure, I may have a quibble or two on minor statements but it's been tricky to find videos showing hands-on real world program tests aside from Apple and others' documentation of the marketing instead of tests. Great video, subbed!
Aw man I’m gutted. Got my 16in Mbp in the summer and I am blown away at the performance of these m1 chips. Not just performance efficiency of it too! May get the smaller Mac for travel to keep things lighter without any compromise!

My God the 16" with the new chip is going to have like 40 hour battery life at this rate

I remember when everyone was clowning Apple saying they’re lying about their claims lol of how much better the new MacBooks would be 😂
All I Heard: super cheap intel mac's coming on ebay 😁
ya. planning to sell my 3months 16". damn
@@keanho8564 You can just wait an extra year for the M1X/M2 16” if you want to
Though it seems like that, but I won’t buy Intel Mac anymore.
LOL @ the thumbnail. "trash" instead of "Intel" 😂

Can’t wait for the “16 inch MacBook Pro supercharged with the M2”

I would buy it immediately. :)
I like 16 for the screen size and speaker...but M1 is killing it.
same i love the bigger screen size, but the M1 is too good not to get in my opinion. I just ordered a baseline M1 MBP 13", until the 16" comes out and ill trade it in
16 inch with M1x or whatever they call would be smth special I think. With new silicon, I think they might even have more room for a better speaker.
@Giving Ermine 346 when in 2021? Looking for a computer 👨💻 for cyber security
The next 16 " will have the m1 chip with more cores (m1x, 12 core, double the amount of performance cores), a mini led display and thanks to that also a 1080p webcam and the battery will probably last 25-30 hours 🤤
Microphone quality on the 13” is much better than on your 16”.
@@presidentmuhammadasyraafab7868 I would say better studio mics than the 16”.
Because it has some signal processing
Totally agree
Everyone is so high on the M1 13", so I'll be the one to look at non-obvious cons of the 13" M1 as of February 2021:
1) Only runs Big Sur - does not run Catalina.
3. Rosetta 2; you can run all intel apps,
4.You can buy the Air it gets similar performance.
7. you can buy a dongle you get like 4 more ports
Also the i9 is slower than the M1.
Great job man. You're literally comparing each and every models just to help us take our decisions right.. massive respect 💕

It was so slow that it was hindering my workflow so this was a must buy for me. I paid $2400 for a 16 inch on Nov 2nd... as soon as i saw the M1 performance, I returned it and bought a M1 for $1300. Best decision I ever made.
It depends what you need it for. I just bought a 16 inches MBP for software development. No containers in M1 yet is a bummer for us.
I Bought 16" after m1 launched as you did.
@@LileshJadav Totally agree with your statement. Perhaps next year would be better with the M1X but until then, Intel core are good. =)

i just got the 16 inch mbp over the m1 because of harddrive space, ram, and the larger screen. still pretty amazing what apple has done tho. im not sure if i quite trust it yet for heavy duty professional stuff, but the M1 has a very promising future. Great video. One can only imagine how amazing the 16” with M1 will be. The M1 chipset is the deal maker! 🙌
So this convinced me of the m1 potential. This 13” mbp pro has pro grade performance apparently
Even the base model air performs nearly identical to the 13 inch pro with 16gb ram
@@hf2943 yupppp. At least for non pro users it’s identical
@@hf2943 The peak performance is nearly identical but the MBP has fans where the MBA does not, so the MBA will throttle itself after about 10 minutes of max performance whereas the MBP can go full speed pretty much indefinitely.

Do you use Photoshop and illustrator a lot?
