HBM2* Stands for High-Bandwidth Memory, revision 2. It's very expensive, very low-level, low energy, ultra-fast random-access memory primarily designed for GPUs. It significantly reduced the amount of GPU power that had to be dedicated to video memory versus the 5300M and 5500M when used in the 5600M, and made the 5600M able to fit more GPU compute units into the same power envelope. Between the memory bandwidth increase provided by the HBM2 and the additional compute units of the 5600M, the 5600M was up to 75% faster than the 5500M 8GB model, which was very upsetting to me when it came out three months after I bought the 5500M 8 GB model.
The 5600M was also a power-efficiency champ at idle, relatively speaking, and did not suffer from the hardware flaw with GDDR6 models (5300M, 5500M) where driving an external display caused the video memory to clock up and use more power than needed. This issue was a big part of what made me ditch my 5500M-equipped MacBook Pro 16 after just 10 months, as I was constantly using it plugged into an external display.
If you found this comment helpful, Gary, why not give it a pin? ;)

5300M user here. Thank you for explaining the cause of frustrating external display issue. This made me crazy for so long and finally learning the actual reason behind is great. Hopefully the new computer (M1 Max) won't have this issue. Thank you!

Well explained! Sorry to hear that you had to ditch yours, but understandable. This is why when many complain (on different threads) about power draw and display issues, it is important to understand what model GPU they have on their MBP. I have the fully loaded MBP 16 intel i9, and I have not had any of the issues with power drain / lag / display etc.

Hold your horses though rendering on the i9 8 cores 32GB a 4k movie took 7minutes, on the M1 with 16GB 12mins, almost double, food for thoughts. Ram seems to make a huge difference still.

The M1 Max is capable of some impressive gaming performance as well, even when running via the Crossover emulation layer. I'd love to get one, but the prospect of shelling out nearly $4000 to get the 14-inch spec I want isn't especially appealing when I spent over a grand less combined for the two laptops I roll right now: an M1 MacBook Air for productivity and a Lenovo Legion 5 for gaming.

The big problem with the notch is it works horribly on any app with a lot of menu items. It doesn't look like the kind of thing that can be improved on later iterations given the smaller size of a laptop screen. The touch bar is the exact opposite, it could have been five times as good but Apple stopped updating it so the one from five years ago so what you have now is pretty much the same that was there in the beginning. The function keys have completely different capabilities from the touch bar so they should have included both. I would much rather have the 2020 touch bar model.

And you also have the test of time, I wait and see, I'll use my 5 grand for a nice holiday and can still do everything I need with an i9.

Not everyone is the Everyday Dad that can buy 2 machines per year. I bought the 2019 16 MBP with touch bar with 32 g mem and the 8 gig video card and it cost me around $3,500.00. It is going to be a while before I am willing or able to spend that kind of money again. Moreover, they same reviewers were gushing about that machine that they now say is soooo loud etc etc. Keep me posted brother. You cannot run eGPU on the new ones 😞 big desktop cards add great value to laptops. Put on top of this the boot camp, VMware issues, compatibility with windows software and M1s are only for people that run video 8k streams and type word docs like you said in the video for intel ones. No doubt M1 are great all in one but attach a big monitor to that laptop and run it all day and will see how it works the thermals. Mine I can tell stay quite with egpu and a 30” Apple Cinema Display. The lack of eGPU is really what made me go with the second hand i9 than M1 processors.

That means I will get 4-6 out of the M1 Pro which still isn’t a full day of work.

Apple hates Intel, so the reviewers hop onboard and preach the gospel. My 16” Intel i9 MBP has been and is a fantastic machine, and the negative reviews leave me scratching my head. I even bought a 16” M1Pro, not to replace my 16” Intel, but to happily coexist. Apple is an extremely political company focused on their bottom line.

You can see even with the 16 inch body and new cooling system, the 9th gen i9 couldn't stretch it's legs. In beefy ugly gaming laptops that thing can do 10k - 11k in CBR23 if cooling and power is adequate. Just a shame it couldn't really do well under that chassis and that power envelope.

wait, there is some confusing statements here. You conflated GPU performance with video exports. Not quite that simple. Technically the 5600m is very powerful, But you are comparing the use of the m1 chip media encoders for the exports, and not so much reliance on the GPU.

Keep you 2019 until END of life support then upgrade to the latest model. By then all incompatibilities and kinks will be worked out on the new M1 Max systems. They are nice and Fast, but there are still some issues with some older stuff. If your current machine works for what you do save your money.

A few things dad. I’m sorry the Touch Bar confused you. It’s useful especially in logic and resolve. Second the late 2019 i9 is no slouch. Take a 60 minute 4k black magic RAW file and render / export on both machines. The M1 stuff eventually slows down. Lastly the apple graphics cannot touch a dedicated GPU.

What I want to know is whether the M1’s are making intel look bad or Apple’s implementation of intel look bad? Apple went too far with thermal throttling. What would have happened if they had the high power mode available in Intel?

    • @brightboxstudio
      @brightboxstudio 2 роки тому

The answer is found when you replace the Intel Mac with an Intel PC, as in the videos that benchmark the M1 against PC laptops. Channels like MaxTech have been pitting the M1 MacBook Air (same case design as Intel MacBook Air) against current PC laptops in the same price range or slightly higher, and the M1 keeps beating them. The kicker? The Intel MacBook Air had one fan, the M1 MacBook Air has no fan. The M1 high performance per watt means it consumes little power and runs very cool…lots of thermal headroom before throttling, so the M1 is free to crank it all the way up and stay there.

Purchased an i9 16gb ram 2016 MacBook Pro in excellent condition for around $780 on Amazon. 1tb ssd. If I wanted similar storage/ram on a new MacBook I would’ve paid a fortune. Very grateful for my laptop. Price is an important factor in usefulness. 3-4 2019s for the same price as a similarly specced m2? Praise God for helping me find the deal! The speakers are incredible and it’s the last MacBook to run windows. The i9 itself bought alone would cost probably at least half of that $780. Might be the best buy on the market for many.
