A lot of reactors seem to think that Lucifer's opening move is a Game of Throne reference because of the actor was in that show too but it's just a happy coincidence. The battle dialogue is lifted almost directly from the comics and it was dire wolf there too and the comic was published first. The only real change from the battle in the comics is that Dream battles the demon directly.
Also, G.R.R Martin didn't invent Dire Wolves. They have been a thing in D&D and fantasy since the 60's.
@@Kharazim You speak as if Dire Wolves weren't a living Animal that went Extinct and someone Created it out of Fiction.
Actually it was a Easter egg look it up not a coincidence the reason dream battles Lucifer is to build up animosity and to make that reference
@@Kharazim Dire Wolves were an actual species that existed. They went extinct far before humans showed up but there are fossils.
@@Kharazim not only that, but the direwolf is an actual extinct canine, not a being originating from fantasy.
The fight between Dream & Morningstar was so different. Her losing and being bitter, because she can't deny the fact that HOPE/DREAMS exist everywhere.
I think there may be even more to it than that, because the competitors actually have to feel the effects of the opponent's move. How many billions of years has it been since Lucifer actually *felt* hope?
@@elbruces That's true. That feeling did make her very uncomfortable and maybe small, hence the poor threat?!
Its because even if there is something that kills hope and she uses it, that would also mean her and her subjects giving up on their hope of seeing heaven.
@@razvan8292 thank you. That was my reading. One of the best moments where this show improves on the source material by providing us the possibility of such an interpretation.
So much better than: "what beats hope? I got nothing."
@@razvan8292
Honestly, I don't think she's considered hope.
Lucifer is kind of in the same situation of Morpheus: if they could change, and have existed for billions of years, then surely they would have changed before now.
In Morpheus' case, his imprisonment, spurs him to start changing, to take the stick out of his ass.
As for Lucifer, they're going to make a very drastic change in season 2, something which they hadn't even thought of doing for eons before now. Why now? I'm throwing out there that it's because Morpheus literally forced them to feel hope, for the first time in a very long time.
That fight was so interesting and cool it was like a game of chess
It makes sense that they fought that way, it would’ve been stupid if they would’ve used swords or that kind of stuff, they’re cosmic beings, words cuts like knives, so…
"“And what will you be then, Dreamlord?”
*“I am hope.”*
All at once, everything changed. The barroom that was the plains of hell fell dead silent, and wide eyes stared from every corner. From the lowliest imp to the demon kings, everyone was stunned and left staring at the man who’d brought *Hope* into *Hell."* - Fear by Ryuugi
In the comics, John kills Rosemary brutally. I honestly like what they did with John in the show. They gave him a much deeper background with his mother and better reasons to want the ruby. He's just creepy and nuts and wants power in the comics. Neil Gaiman also said the reason he changed it was because he felt the need to give those who read the books an "ah, maybe we don't know everything " moment. Lol
It's great!
And as a result it makes John a vastly more interesting character. Doctor Destiny was entertaining in the comic, certainly, but Dee is a deliciously rich specimen of a character here.
Dee is such a rich, deep character in this. Like you feel bad for him in ways, but in others you know he's very dangerous. He's like a child with access to a nuke.
That’s so sad to hear he did that in the books, she’s so sweet
I liked the way this episode subverted expectations a few different times (but each time was set up -- there were no cheap surprises).
The fight was the biggest surprise, as you pointed out -- much more fun than a big CGI punch-out.
The fact that John let Rosemary go (and gave her the amulet) -- that was unexpected, but it was set up properly.
Also, in the little 7-11 place, a white guy in a baseball cap listens to a Black woman tell him a bunch of stuff that sounds like madness, and he immediately believes her, accepts it, and acts on it -- I was sort of expecting that to go in a more cliched direction, too.
MOST CREATIVE AND INTERESTING FIGHT!!
Sandman is a strange comic for this younger generations to read/watch. Back in the 80s and early 90s we were really dark with our stories. Where you see superheroes fight other characters and all the new take on older comic stories back in the 80s were were all about tearing down normal stereotypes. Sandman is a really grown up take on looking at the universe of things. These characters are not real but also real. Fights are more metaphysical and thought provoking. Those of us that were reading that new take of comics were always considered weird and goth thinking. Going forward things will always be complex. That is the way Gaiman writes.
Dire Wolves are real. Or they were. They went extinct around 10,000 years ago. They're about the same size as the largest modern Grey Wolves.
david thewlis (john dee) is great at coming off as this soft-spoken, even vulnerable individual. but he's oh so dangerous.
A lot of people don't realize that a very similar battle happened in Disney's: The Sword in the Stone (1963) between Merlin and Madam Mim.
There's more skill to the fight than it seems. Dream had to draw Lucifer down a certain path so he could pull out the final trump card.
Lucifer could have won but he would likely have had to take the form of his father, the Presence aka God. This is why I believe he ended the fight.
There’s also possibility of wanting to avoid invoking another certain member of The Endless. Especially, since that one’s direct presence could be a huge detriment to morale. Not good for the ongoing struggle.
@@0okamino You are absolutely correct!
end they cut the scene about dream ....of HEAVEN
In DC, Lucifer is like the 2nd most powerful being that exists. He is more op than anyone you could think of. He would be in the top 5, maybe top 3 if you were to combine DC and Marvel and include God from DC and The One Above All in Marvel. Legit besides the top of their respective universe, there may be only one or 2 to beat or compare to him in Marvel.
In the comic, this episode was Dream vs a demon in Hell. No Lucifer. Honestly, I haven't seen anyone do DC Lucifer justice. The show Lucifer was fun, but didn't even touch on a drop of his power.
"He is more op than anyone you could think of."
If that were the case they wouldn't be "the 2nd most powerful being that exists".
@@PeverellTheThird lol. Ok. Besides the number one creators of each of the respective universes, in Marvel, name one character more powerful, or on par. There would be endless arguments. But he is number 2 in DC and arguably number 3 when combinding Marvel and DC. Soo.. I did say that you could think of.. can you think of someone more OP?
@Rick King 22 honestly, I don't keep up anymore. That's why I said arguably. Lol. That's like in a Marvel, The Beyonder used to be OP af, and then watered down later. Franklin Richards was super OP, and then he got watered down. Idk. That's why I said, it could be argued, and depending on how new comics approach things and the cinematic universe. I mean, the MCU said Captain Marvel was the strongest Avenger, but compared to the comics, Thor could do circles around her, and Scarlett Witch is more powerful than both.
23:31 *Soft spoiler alert* ................................................................................................................................................................................IF we get a season two; you just might get what you're asking for.
The transformation battle as seen here was used in The Sword in the Stone (T. H. White book and Disney film). The concept may well be much older. It's a variant of the riddle game that J. R. R. Tolkien used in The Hobbit. Riddle games are *much* older than Tolkien, of course.
Waaaay older. There are a few fights like this in Greek myth, and I'm willing to bet there are still older versions than that.
(And hopefully age better than Achilles' dad trying to r@pe Achilles' mom)
Lucifer with the fuckin' Doom Eternal castle. Also, shout-out Mazikeen the Demon-Queen.
Regarding when you said that you hadn't seen a fight like the one between Dream and Lucifer before, the old Disney animated movie 'The Sword in the Stone' has exactly that kind of fight between Merlin and the witch Mim, except that they physically changed in that film.
Matthew went from the tutorial to a universe boss battle real quick. I call hax.
fun fact.. Dreams former love in hell.. Nada... her name literally means "Hope" in my language (Croatian), and few other slavic languages. and in the end Hope is what makes Morpheus win the duel, and it's even in the name of the episode. This was intentional from Gaiman :)
I love Lucifer in this. My crack casting would be to have her play the part in _Good Omens_ (not as the same universe character, obviously).
"Shut up make your own hat!!" sent me!!!! Lolololol
I love you mentioning Dante's Inferno because it definitely was an influence in Gaiman's portrayal of Hell in the comics.
This battle between Dream and Lucifer is so fantastic. It subverts so many comic book expectations because it's a battle of wits and skill, not just pure power. And if there's anything Dream has in his favor, it's creativity.
It's funny u think that Lucifer in any adaptation could be honourable 🤣🤣🤣
The next two episodes are so good, can't wait for the reaction
You didn't talk about Nada, given how you reacted to her
They are doing a version of the wizard's duel. For a more humorous version, see _The Raven_ with Boris Karloff, Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, and Jack Nicholson.
There’s only one thing that disappointed me in this episode: I was expecting Dream to be “welcomed” in hell by Etrigan the Demon (as was in the comics). Well, maybe it would be too costly.
Otherwise fantastic episode!
I haven't read the comics myself but I also thought Etrigan might make an appearance at some point too! Maybe in season 2 though!
Dreams die all the time, really. And despair is the death of hope. But still, lovely ending.
John Dee is also name Dr. Destiny in the DC universe if you want to know more of him watch Justice League Dark
Lucifer could've won easily bro was holding back
I am... Chuck Norris
GREAT reaction. What John did for Rosemarie really shocked me but I was very relieved - I really liked her!
I am surprised that there are many people who believe that the Eternals are the strongest and most powerful in the universe, but the truth is that no, the only beings in the most powerful DC universe are:
God.
AND
Lucifer.
Choronzon was hardly a random demon. Neil Gaiman made him a Duke under Beelzebub, but he goes back to Elizabethan occult grimoires, first mentioned by (surprise, surprise) John Dee, Queen Elizabeth's court astrologer, mathematician & magician.
Aleister Crowley expanded upon Choronzon & his function in the immaterial,
as the demon of Dispersion when travelling through the Abyss.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choronzon
I'm so glad John didn't kill Rosemary in the show. I always hated that part in the comic.
could you react to classroom of the elite, its a really good show and I think you will enjoy it.
who is Nada
and wat book cAn i read for their love story(nada and dream)
Matthew is the cutest bird
Lucifer knows all. Plus I don't wanna spoil things for you, but Lucifer has informants.
He doesn't know all. That's an invention of others in later spin-off series.
@@RichardStrong86 dc lucifer is omniscient bro
@@RichardStrong86 in this world they do because of spies and informants. Some in particular that - as i said - I don't wanna spoil.
Lucifer tired, bored rolling Hell. He took Vacation in Las Vegas and become Directive. 😆
Detective*
lucifer is he, guys. not her
Angels dont really have a gender and in this they are presented female. This is not the comic.
@@kingofnonation5843 its cause in others languages lucifer use masc pronouns. its not about the gender. its about pronouns.
@@xe_dusk but in this adaptation we have no instance of them being refered to as any pronouns specific pronouns so they them would be the best fit all though they seem to be pushing toward a more feminine presenting Lucifer.
In my opinion it was a mistake in this series to choose Lucifer to challenge Dream. In the comic, the demon himself does it. It makes a lot more sense.
Nah I much prefer what they did in the show. It's a lot more fun to watch
It actually makes more sense for Lucifer to. Lucifer sets everything up for Dream's visit. They know Dream is coming, and they want Dream on their side whether by choice or force. If you're Lucifer, there is no way you'd let a lesser denizen of Hell potentially ruin your plan. That's why they're all "oh darn; the rules say I have to, so I guess I have to even though I don't want to."
The main problem is that the challenge takes place roughly like in the comic. But I don't think Lucifer is that easily beaten in a challenge like that. As he "had" to go, it was better he had lost the demon than Lucifer. My opinion.
@@MrMakko75 why would Lucifer not be beaten in that challenge? Its not a contest of brute strength or power. Its a battle of wits. The bottom line is that all the inhabitants of hell have dreams and that includes Lucifer.
Lucifer dreams of one day escaping hell and getting back into the Silver city (heaven). This fact have dream the advantage
Don't worry they'll go back to Hell in the next season, if they get a 2nd season.
