i will have to do some research into this story concept.......i always took it as, the kind face when born was the mother, and the kind face when dying is death
but it very well COULD BE the way the two of you are taking it......but that would make Death, also, Life
I could go LIGHTYEARS of distance with that idea
      Death - Life
      Dream - Wake
      Desire - Repulsion
      Despair - Elation
      Destiny -
      Destruction -
      Delirium - Delight
Destiny, Death, Dream, Desire, Despair, Destruction, and Delirium (previously known as Delight)......those are the 7 siblings.......and Delirium (previously known as Delight) is the hint
i need "D" words for the above mentioned
i think i got something here

That stings a little more than in the comic though, because in the comic I'm pretty sure, unless I'm remembering incorrectly, that Roderick Burgess didn't die right in front of him like in the show. Which means Death was literally standing there right in front of him in his prison. Did he even see her? She'd have had to see him.

This episode starts out in such a dark and disturbing way you almost don't want to continue watching. The way it ends makes you glad you did.
Death is something we all encounter at the end of our journey, it takes away those who mean the most to us, so much so we fear it when it comes to ourselves.
Who we are, all we've done, all we love, taken away in an instant, this drives that fear.
What are we? What is it that makes mind, conciousness, awareness?
At the fundamental level ALL matter is energy condensed into matter, from the grains of sand on a beach to the greatest minds in history. All comes from energy.
Science shows us that energy cannot be destroyed, it can only transform into another form of energy.
Is that what religion calls the soul? In our passing does that energy just stop because our bodies cease to function?
No we transcend the mortal life and our energy disperses into another form beyond our comprehension...
THAT is what we fear, the lack of KNOWING what's to come.... We shouldn't fear death at all..

One little thing I think is worth mentioning is that the Endless aren’t Gods. In a lot of ways they’re more than that because in a lot of Gaiman’s work, Gods exist only because people believe that they exist, and when they’re forgotten, they die/fade. The Endless however, exist beyond that. Just because you don’t believe in Death, doesn’t mean Death stops. Just because you don’t believe in Dreams, doesn’t mean you still don’t have Dreams. They don’t End. Hence, the Endless.

The irony of the interactions with Gadling is that Dream was at loose ends after 100 years of imprisonment and Death herself was almost driven to quit, but Hob has been through as much and worse over the centuries and always kept going. I cried so much over this episode. Every person I've seen react to this has such an honest emotional response. If they know the comic, there's such joy when she comes on screen. 8:06 It isnt really an unspoken thing, it was specified that the Endless themselves are also the lord of the opposite of whatever it is they represent, Dream - Reality, Despair - Hope, Destruction - Creation, etc...., so people actually "meet" Death twice in their lives, the first time when their born, when Death breathes life into them and the second time when they die. It was explained that most people don't remember meeting her the first time since they were just newborn babies at the time, but they remember her instantly when they meet her again when they die......

When the siblings want to talk to each other, or ask permission to enter the other's realm, they enter their chamber and hold the sigil of the sibling they want.

We complicate things with grandeur the same as Dream and, as episode 5 put it, we need to or we'll lose our humanity, but we can find comfort in returning to the comfort that we function to be alive, eat good food, sleep someplace safe, help our species continue, and be aware of the world around us. Without mortals, none of the endless have a function. Life is what gives these great, eternal forces meaning and purpose. Without life, there is no need for death, just as without death, there is no purpose in life. What is the realm of Dream without the dreamers? Desire, Despair, Destruction, Delirium... none have a place in a purely mechanistic universe. Even Destiny has no purpose without mortals to walk the paths of his garden.
And yeah, I love Hob Gadling. He's my favorite character, and I absolutely love his joy of life. Even when things are at their worst, he never loses sight of "things can be better, and I have so much to live for." Heck, if I could make a deal with Dream to meet every hundred years, you can be sure that I would! XD
As for the "talismans," all of the Endless have a gallery in their homes, where the symbols of their siblings (save for the prodigal's) are there. It is basically the phone line to their siblings. It isn't anything ominous, it's just part of the way things work for them. And yes, Desire has a bit of a rivalry with Dream. Desire, Despair, and Delirium, as the younger siblings, tend to play games with mortals, and more actively mess with them, while the older siblings are kind of... 'above' that. Desire, in particular, is just... resentful of Dream not joining in on their fun. But, hey, one of my _other_ favorite stories is Three Septembers and a January, where he does join in on one of their games XD It is... a very satisfying story, all told.

In a prequel written after the series conclusion it was suggested that the reason for Desire's particular animosity towards Dream is because Desire played a trick on Dream that cost him his lover (loving Dream never ends well), and as a result Dream swore to have nothing further to do with Desire. And *nobody* rejects Desire (at least to their mind). Hence their tendency to prod Dream whenever they can.

I think that the worst of the chaos was concentrated in the diner, but was starting to spread out; for most people it would have been just a strange bout of insanity and tragedy worldwide. And Dream said that he would let them sleep it off before they have to rebuild everything; it also wouldn’t be the first time we as a species had to do that.

I've seen a lot of movies and series so far. (I'm freaking 50 years old) but never an episode of a series that was so perfectly written, acted and filmed. Absolutely awful and sad but not cheesy for a second. Statements that seem like a natural conversation between beings who support each other. Although I've written film reviews for a while, I'm at a loss for words about this series (especially this episode).

Maybe I misunderstood... but I got the impression that everything that happened, and that we saw happening on the television, in episode 5 was happening inside a dream. I thought that when the Ruby knocked out Morpheus we sort of got forced into a dream so he could understand why it wasn't listening to him anymore and what John wanted to do with it.

    • @0okamino
      @0okamino 2 роки тому +3

The events of episode 5 take place in the waking world, except for when Morpheus and John go into The Dreaming for their confrontation. I do think your idea is very interesting, but I’m reasonably certain that Dream doesn’t dream, in that it’s not unconsciousness like we would experience it, but a void of consciousness while he’s incapacitated.
The time that has passed is vague (even in the comics), but the implication is that things had gotten enough back to normal by the time Dream is feeding the pigeons. While John’s use of the ruby had caused disasters (and there probably was evidence of it that we just didn’t see), it didn’t get to the point of cataclysmic. Death was probably putting in overtime, though.
