I think John's conversation in the previous episode is important to the way things play out here-and an interesting invention for the series that isn't really in the comics at all. John views people as "fundamentally selfish," so when he says he's stripping away the "lies" so people can be "honest," what that means is filtered through his view of what the "truth" is. When he forces Bette to explain why she "lied" in calling him handsome, she begins to say "I wanted to make you feel good," but he keeps pushing her for the more selfish answer: "I wanted you to like me." Probably, of course, BOTH of those things are true, but from John's perspective only the most selfish motive counts as "the truth." Everything else is "lies" rather than, you know, parts of a complex human psychology that includes both selfishness and other kinds of reasons & motives.
Yup. He's like someone who takes away someone's empathy, and then goes "I've proven this person is cruel!" when all they've proven is that people become cruel if you take away their empathy. Which, duh. Reducing people to their base instincts means you've stripped people of some parts that made them who they are, you've made incomplete people, not their true selves. Plus, base instincts also include the instinct to care, to be held, to protect children... That, and he's a massive hypocrite. As soon as the people in the diner turn on him and wanted to hurt or kill him, he stops them. He stops them from doing what their "true selves" wanted (or what he thinks their true selves are anyway) and makes them hurt themselves. He wants the truth, but as soon as his truth means he gets hurt he changes it.
If you're curious about what was happening in the rest of the world while we were in the diner, go back and look at the subtitles for all the news reports on the TV throughout the episode: they tell the story of horrific traffic accidents, raging wildfires, sweeping riots and violence, and the news anchors themselves being driven mad with brutal honesty.
You guys might also have missed that the news reports were revealing what was going on in the world all throughout the episode. We didn't get to see it, but if you listen to those announcements they were describing how the world was falling into chaos.
I was fine with staying in the diner for the whole middle of the episode. I think if you cut away, even briefly, you lose some of the tension that was building. (Also, since I understand that this was an expensive season to produce, at least this episode was probably pretty cheap 🙂 ).
This episode was hella UNCOMFORTABLE, his world is a no no. His life of trauma was caused by being forced to live a lie & with lies. The way dreams play a part into the writing, is really good. The truth doesn't reveal much about people (just mostly the uglier side), but dreams reveal a lot about people.
This episode really hammered home that John was a traumatized child whose life was ruined by lies and having tools that weren't really his fault for having. He's sitting with a tub of ice cream and almost content, thinking he made everything better. It makes so much sense why Dream saw the damage his ruby did to John and understood that much of what was wrong with John wasn't his fault. That he was basically living with the trauma and consequences that Roderick Burgess caused. I really think Dream saw the child inside of John.
@@ShadowyFox_86 True. The way everything branches off from Roderick Burgess selfish attempt to resurrect his son, is well written into episodes and this episode through one victim show the revealed all the cracks on humanity due to that 1st episode monumental incident.
The way the reaction unfolds in regards to the guy interviewing for the Vanguard job saying "some men like taking orders from women." 😂😂 That was priceless. Can we also appreciate that the Fates may have played John Dee into destroying the ruby?
David Thewlis is a really good actor. Even though always sounds and looks the same in all of his performances, the mannerisms and personality are so different that he disappears even though he still looks and sounds like David Thewlis.
i believe that in comics, john was imprisoned by Justice League instead of his mom. also what happen outside the diner was reflected by news anchor. also next, ep 6 is also my fav episode of this season.
When I first watched this episode and reach the loop thing, the first thing I thought of was "How many burgers is he already ate?" And as someone who never read the comic, I also thought that he did all this for ice-cream too.
This is really a great example of why the tools of the Endless should never be in mortal hands. This was such a ramped up form of the horrors we saw in episode 3.
like me (i think), you guys didn't go and binge the whole series in one sitting. i like keeping it to once a week. that said, i did see the 6th episode already and can't wait to see if it impacted you guys as much. these first 5 episodes were great, but the 6th one is a masterpiece.
Madison thanks for explaining this episode in terms of a chapter from the comics. You two are one of my favorite couples reactors because you always keep it positive. Christian some advice, Madison is smart, cute and honest but you don't want her to go to the "dark side" so don't provoke her to go dark side on you. I love you guys and wished more young couples were like you two.
lol no they never talk about it again. the thanos like event is treated like it didn't even happened by the writers. tho. i think in the comics they didn't either. and was there a cut to show whats happening outside? i thot it was just diner and news as well in the comics. i can't recall if there was supposed to be a riot outside tho
With how dark Vertigo comics were at the time, this is probably not the first time awful things have happened in universe. I don't want to say that it's normal, but it's certainly not outside the realm of possibilities that could occur (with all the varied sorts of being we run across in the comics).

It was the best episode tho
@@StekTM1 it's definitely a memorable episode.

This performance of David Thewlis here is masterful.

It took me until this episode to realize this John Dee was the same John Dee, aka Dr. Destiny, from that JL cartoon episode I watched as a kid.
John’s forthcoming because honesty is the best policy to him. To a fault. Which is his whole problem.
the next episode, you guys are gonna love it!!!!
When I first watched this episode and reach the loop thing, the first thing I thought of was "How many burgers is he already ate?"
And as someone who never read the comic, I also thought that he did all this for ice-cream too.
"He only did this so he could get a free jug of ice cream"🤣🤣
🤘😝🤘
This episode was unnerving. John's misuse of the ruby changing the situation whenever he wanted to was disturbing.
This is really a great example of why the tools of the Endless should never be in mortal hands. This was such a ramped up form of the horrors we saw in episode 3.
