I love Gwendoline expression when Morpheus said "if they don't dream of heaven" you can see her really hurt cause Morpheus know that heaven is the thing Lucifer dream about. Such a subtile dagger thrown at Lucifer heart.
Loved Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer! Her facial expressions, the little smirks, the disdain, the barely held back rage when defeated. Just an excellent performance.
One of the things I found out and loved is that Lucifer's costumes in this were designed by Gwendoline Christie's husband. He knocked it out the park with them.
Everyone who holds or summons the Antilife Equation becomes insane or kills themselves out of pure madness. Lucifer is able to casually use it in a duel. It shows how they are without a doubt the second strongest character, only below the Creator.
In the Lucifer Comics, Lucifer goes to the Source Wall to have a picnic and wait for important stuff to happen and wonders why people like Darkside make such a fuss about going there.
Amazing reaction, also love how whether consciously or not, they somewhat linked Dream's final answer of hope to Nada since she said to him that she would never give up hope even though she has been in Hell for so long. Truly showing how unkillable hope is. Even the title A Hope In Hell has new meanings with this adaptation since aside from the Dream/Nada parallels it can also refer to how John doesn't harm Rosemary here but rather gives her the amulet since "good people seldom survive in this world", a world John sees as Hell essentially and Rosemary being one of the good people, the hope in it.
I loved how they turned the contest into epic spectacle, and upped the stakes between Morpheus and Lucifer. Gwendoline Christie was magnificent as Lucifer in their effortless poise and, as you put it, regality. Morpheus, arrogant though he may be, still earned that win and strode out of there like the bloody *monarch* he says he is.
Rosemary really changed so much about John, and I wonder if her admitting she's scared circles John back around to his own mom (who was afraid and died trying to take care of him) and the trauma that came from a bad father. I thought John's mind would be "this woman is like my mom. I couldn't save my mom, but I have the chance to save someone else's mom."
I feel that when Dream mentioned 'hope', something inside Lucifer moved. Sure, Lucifer look like wanting to destroy Dream by the end of season, but everyone who know, know what will happen.
Can someone tell me what powers Dream's Helm has? His Sand can bring dreams and nightmares to life, and his Jewel can control minds, but the only thing his Helm is shown to do is guide him to the Jewel.
Lucifer couldn't bring herself to kill Hope. She's the Lightbringer, after all. And even the Devil herself hopes to leave Hell someday. This scene always sends a chill down my spine.
I thought maybe he would say the Creator in response to anti-life. But maybe that would be a no-no plus too simplistic. Hope is more interesting for reasons y’all have explained.
I laughed when u guys said "got dammmn" to her saying her husband had another family in another town. Just about all us americans have those stories lol
While don't mind casting people clearly different from the comic illustrations, it does amuse me that, despite the gender change, Gwendolyn looks exactly like Lucifer in the comics; maybe taller.
I doubt this has any connection, but at the end of their battle when Lucifer talks about "anti-life" and Dream mentions "hope," I took it as a Superman vs Darkseid analogy.
@@commiebastard3633 I think you're in the minority there. Seems most reactors and fans felt it still had the impact and allowed for more tension. Also, Gaiman has said he felt some of the violence in the comic issue was gratuitous and would have changed some things had he created the comic with more years of experience under his belt.
You are the reactors who could enjoy the depth and strength of that oldest game. And It was so powerful with his confidence and performance infront of Lucifer. Chills !!!
I think keeping Jon shooting her would've gone against his new motivations, his new character. In the comic book I felt like he only shot her to show that he's evil. But now he has real, human motivations to follow.
He really does have more nuance. And she doesn't fit his worldview of "people are selfish." He admits she is a good person, which he hasn't said of anyone up to that point. I also think he sees a mother who was hurt by lies, and having just lost his own mother may be trying to save her because he couldn't save his mom.
Having seen four episodes now, I am captivated. I had no previous knowledge of the author’s work. This story is so unusual, creative, and even beautiful. And I love being surprised. I could never have guessed the twists and turns and final outcome of this episode. I have a question though for those knowledgeable of the subjects. Why in this situation would Lucifer be such an a hole? Why would Lucifer want to be in conflict with Dream? To absorb the dreaming? Why?
Lucifer just has a lot of plans and ambitions, let's put it like that 😄 And you've probably already understood from this episode they hope for something too. There is a small bit with the explanation a bit later in the season.
Dream is one of the three most powerful of the Endless. Mortals enter his realm nightly. If you're a tactician like Lucifer, you want as many chances as possible to corrupt and turn mortals. Lucifer has tried to ally with Dream before, but when the diplomatic route doesn't work, Lucifer is not above force and trickery.
was Lucifer meant to be a woman? cause when i watched it, i assumed they're like some sort of androgynous, genderless, angelic being, which i think makes sense since it seemed like the show purposefully avoided using any pronouns towards them. anyway, great reaction, love watching you guys! :)
It's really unclear ..... Lucifer can have different potrayals....... Here Lucifer was presented more feminine than masculine or it could be vice versa like in the lucifer show ..... This is the case with alot of the these immortal beings and angels ....most of them are not bound by gender
Gwendoline Christie did what Tilda Swinton did with Gabriel in 2005 Constantine movie. Neil Gaiman was inspired by David Bowie when creating Lucifer, but Bowie has returned to his planet, so Gwen is the closest to a tall, imposing, ambiguous silhouette.
I can never tell whether the implication was supposed to be that Lucifer genuinely didn’t know how to defeat hope, or whether they did know but they weren’t willing to embrace it just to defeat Dream.
I love Rosemary! To me it's one of the biggest and most important changes in the series, and I adore it! That scene in the comic hurts so much, and it is a brilliantly different take on John. I subbed for you guys.
It might just be me, but I can't believe Lucifer would take her defeat personal and now holds a grudge. Sure Morpheus beats her, but the one who set it all up is Choronzon, it wasn't personal to Morpheus, he just wants his helmet
I mean, by the looks of it, Lucifer intended to participate in the game. Lucifer wanted to ally with Dream or at least have his realm join his, meaning more power for hell. Plus I'm pretty sure the devil won't like it if they've been bested.
It similar story wise but one significant difference. Lucifer never actively participated in the challenge. The end where Lucifer wants to trap dream in hell is the same, almost line for line with the demons dreaming of heaven dialogue
Yeah Lucifer was intending to keep dream in hell and wasn’t going to let him leave. Despite winning acknowledging that dreams had no power in hell, when Dream said a his heaven speech, the Demons part and allow him to leave and would destroy him.
Dream is someone she's wanted to get on her side for ages, and he won't say yes. Arrogance and pride are big things for Lucifer, so they just can't accept that someone would tell them no.
I love Gwendoline expression when Morpheus said "if they don't dream of heaven" you can see her really hurt cause Morpheus know that heaven is the thing Lucifer dream about. Such a subtile dagger thrown at Lucifer heart.
Gwendolyn had so many subtle facial expressions, she really added so much to the Lucifer role
Morpheus dropped that mic so hard it created a new layer of Hell.
😂

And the bodysuit Lucifer under their black coat has Dave Mckean art printed on it
Really. What an artistic collaboration this series seems to be.
The fabric for the white outfit was bad, but I loved the design!
Ironically, Tilda Swinton in Constantine as Gabriel walked so Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer could run.
Those two play amazingly good androgynous characters with extraplanar origins.
Can we all appreciate the look of "well...fuck" when Dream realizes he's facing Lucifer

If you're going for androgynous blonde, the choices are limited without Bowie. Like Gwendolyn and Tilda are basically the most likely.
