Muriatic acid will make the aluminum transfer go away . Wet a small rag with it and wrap the journal , let it sit for an hour then check it . If need do it again , then you can polish with fine grit . If the crank has any small nicks in it touch up any raised spots with a file then polish . Those will just be oil galleys , fine for a lawnmower @ 3 -- 4000 RPM

Could it have been running on one cylinder causing the carbon difference. Meaning one coil not working.

The engine looks ok enough to Frankenstein back to life with the parts from the other one .

I say. 'use the block, and 1 good piston with the parts from the other engine with a bad cylinder,' when you have time to make a runner.

7:15 you can use muriatic acid to dissolve the aluminum transfer off the crank.

What i do with those is find a vertical shaft engine and swap everything over if i really need a horizontal engine .

I have not been very happy with Kohler engines, to me you see less problems with the Kawasaki engines and the vanguard engines than you do with the Kohlers.

I’ve got a ch18 with bad rings, bad head gaskets and 1 bad intake valve. Came from a cub cadet. Was a major disappointment

It Looks Like Cylinder 1 Got Hotter Then Cylinder 2
The Thin Oil Is The Culprit For All The Damage
Give It A Hone And Put The Other Crank & Pistons Etc In It & It Should Be Good To Go
I Wouldn't Use That Hydraulic Lifter, I'm Sure You Wouldn't Anyway.
That Engine Is Saveable For Not Much Money
I Would Rebuild That Engine For Sure...
