Or, are you like me-someone who's soul (and sentiments) appreciate the old Christmas traditions and songs more than the blaring advertisements and consumer culture we have nowadays? In this video, I share 5 old fashioned gifts people used to give that I think we should bring back. So, if you're old fashioned at heart and enjoy gifts that have a little history and time-worn charm, here are some ideas you might want to try for yourself (or someone special). I'm truly an 'analog girl in a digital world' and, during the holiday season, I often find myself wanting to share gifts that are the latest tech gadget or fad, but those items that have a little history and time-worn charm. Here's a list of 5 old fashioned gifts people used to give that I think we should bring back. What would YOU add to this list? Share it below! I'll meet you in the comments section!
Tea kettles, on the higher price end but if you want to heat up water for tea, you don’t have to wash a pot. Handkerchiefs, seriously so much prettier and more sustainable than tissues. Potholders, you can hardly have enough and they can be very prettily made from scraps. A potted plant, can be a good gift.

I love the idea of handkerchiefs as well for the exact reason you mentioned. I have a few repurposed flannel shirts I’ve cut for this purpose but would love some nicer looking ones to keep in my purse. You are a true old, wise soul! Thank for sharing incredible ideas! 😀
@@BecomingaFarmGirl I invested in a ceramic coated tea pot, and I LOVE it, I can leave water in it without worrying about rust, makes mornings a lot easier. I turned a couple of cute old dresses that didn't fit me into aprons and I have to say that wearing them makes me feel cute AND ready to take on the world. Awe shucks! Everyone always called me an "old soul" even as a kid. Thank you for the compliment, though I'm only 30, so not THAT old yet! I'm still dreaming on a homestead and family. Maybe one day, but thanks for inspiring me to spend more time at the local farmer's market in the meantime. :) I love to sew, and while I hadn't considered using flannel for handkerchiefs, I'll have to try it now, sounds soft! Not as delicate, but maybe I could crochet a lace edge to it like I would for a baby blanket... Ideas!
One year, I decided to make cookies for everyone because I didn't have enough money to spend on everyone.
I placed them in little cookie bags and individually wrapped them up.
Everyone enjoyed opening their gifts and enjoyed the cookies.
Now they all request them each year. It's the little things that make the biggest impact.
Another good thing about giving cookies is that they won't clutter your friends or family's homes. They are always welcomed.
My uncle took up crocheting flower dish scrubbers now that he’s retired, and he gives them as gifts. It’s something that can bring him closer to his wife as she crochets, but he’s made it his own thing by trying different flower patterns and then adapting them to make his own.
That's awesome! I'd love to see one and/or make one myself!
This is an old video but I think fabric napkins or tea towels that can double as napkins is a great gift. It can be personalized so easily to the taste of the recipient, it encourages dining together (and the beauty and rituals of coming together at the table) and it is lower waste! Vintage, linen, handmade, thrifted, new, there are beautiful choices for everyone!

I’d love to see fireplaces become a norm again. Not the propane/gas ones but the crackling, flickering beauty that brings a peace and feeling of wellness in one’s soul. ❤

Absolutely!! The holidays are held hostage to getting and buying, which leaves many stressed and exhausted during a season where, if we shifted our focus a bit, we’d get so much more enjoyment. Always good to see you House of S! I hope your holiday prep and season are going well!
I have a sister who cannot make chicken and dumplings. I always make a big pot for her and my BIL. They both like mine so it's a perfect gift for them. I add a nice dessert and they are very happy. I make my other sister canned jams and soups. I often will make everyone a homemade candle too.
Sewing kits/baskets, home ec classes, cookie tins or treat tins, and personalized stationary with note writing every now and again. I could come up with more.
Great ideas. Add a mason jar filled with seed packets gifted in a harvesting basket.

As far as watches go, the really old-fashioned winder ups are really great. 😊
Playing cards. Like your weekly tea playing cards with friends once a month is a nice way to socialize without it breaking the bank. Everyone can bring a favorite snack to share. The catch is not to get to competitive. 😉 Another is the traditional cookie exchange at Christmas. This could also be a teaching time by having a friend come over to help bake that may not know how but wants to learn.
I finished crocheting a baby blanket for our first grandchild this week. The back is lined with fleece. Was hoping to finish the blanket in early October just before she was born, but it is done and has been given to her, as a late baby gift or early Christmas gift, either way works.
The front has iron on patch decals of butterflies; her middle name is after my mom, my mom likes butterflies. There are also sea creature iron-on patches on the front bottom half, as her room is decorated in an ocean theme. Some of the patches stuck on well, but most only partially stuck, so to be extra carefull all the patches were sewn on to make sure they are good and secure and with no possible choking hazards.
The fleece on the back has a large print design with baby seals.
I used yarn and sewed her name into the top front and her birth date on the bottom front.
Is it absolutely perfect, nope, it is unique, homemade, given with love!
Each Christmas I knit socks for my family with a quality yarn, wool and nylon is my choice. They are always so much appreciated, and they are welcomed every year. Spending time with friends and family is the best thing to do at Christmas., gifts are optional.

I always give home canned food as gifts. I especially like giving a variety pack of jams in 4 oz jars that are presented in a homemade cloth gift bag.
I love homemade gifts and giving them. Not everyone shares in that unfortunately.I love old quilts doilies etc. I too have many oil lamps, aprons and such, and I’m glad they are finding their way back. I have tea time even if it’s just me. I hope more people keep going back to the old ways, a slower and simpler life is so rewarding. ❤️
Sharen- you have seen my soul! I could not agree with you more! Outside of 2-3 close friends and family, I've often got the impression that my homemade gifts were "sub par" meanwhile, I'm thinking I'm giving something that is unique, can't easily be replicated in a store, uses quality ingredients and is useful. Let's not even talk about my oil lamp collection! I'm hoping to find a use Aladin lamp soon (pricey, but worth it). I use them year round in and outside the house. My husband found a used tea set for me at Christmas and we enjoy it several times during the week as a transition routine from our work life to our home life. You are very right friend, I feel encouraged that more people are starting to notice that a simpler life is truly how to life life! Sharen, you're awesome!
My favorite times with my mom and grandma were tea time and even Christmas time was special with simple foods like sandwiches and an old classic Christmas movie. My grandma is no longer with us but we still carry on the tradition. If we arent going to visit family, my husband and I do this by ourselves. The week of Christmas is not about shopping, crowds or gift. Its about savoring the season. We stopped exchanging gifts decades ago and it hasn’t affected our Christmas one bit.
I think Needlework is making a come-back, but I think it is still widely viewed as a 'Granny's pastime' in the U.S. I love knitting a Dishcloth for a newlywed or a housewarming gift. Knitting, embroidery, crochet, tatting etc. These are such wholesome work for our hands and produce beautiful gifts. I like using natural fibers such as cotton, wool or hemp rather than acrylic because the tactical experience is much more enriching to the soul.
On You Tube there are so many cross stitch channels. I believe now they call them floss tubers. Wow. Some of the works they do. My mom picked it up to keep herself busy. She is now 87 and does some wonderful pieces. So now I will be doing it again starting in the fall. When I think of all the nicely organized DMC threads I gave donated to thrift stores and am now buying them back.
I am 72 years old and love oil lamps and lanterns. We have many ceramic oil lamps scattered around our home as well as several Dietz lanterns which can be used inside or out, because they have the protected flame top. We have them for dual purposes - one for light if the power goes out, and also for ambiance. Sometimes an oil lamp is just comforting to have lit on a table in a corner rather than a candle (or fake candle). Safer, too. I'm also "with you" on the analog watches! I could never handle a digital techie watch that buzzed, beeped, and told me what to do every minute of the day.
I love your channel so much. I had no budget for my Christmas. I cut up clothing. And made gifts for family. I made needle books,cell phone bags, mug rugs, rice bag warmer and pot holders,. Next year I want to keep notes for recipes ang helpful tips. And to put some family history onto paper. Maybe aprons might make the list. Merry Christmas
I still give these old fashioned gifts because a. I have 6 kids and can't afford to give gifts just to give gifts, b. show love through food and c. want to share because food is delicious. ❤️❤️❤️. Love your videos, you are a HUGE inspiration to my channel.
I love making those dry mix jars with a recipe card and all they have to do is add the wet ingredients. I also make snack mixes in jars or homemade skin scrubs. I like to decorate the jars with colored ribbons. I love kitting gifts, too.💖
We need to bring back beautiful simple living. I love hanging laundry outside, foraging roadside herbs and flowers and berries down a country field or roadside for hanging them to dry for making medicines and salves. I love an analog radio with a pull up antenna and a clicky old fashioned timer that dings loudly and goes off just once. We keep a small oil lamp at the back door with a glass jar filled with matches next to it for when power goes off and use battery clocks. Another old time habit is spending evenings on our screened porch listening to the birds, crickets and watching the animals or listening to music where we have a table and lamp for doing puzzles. Also bring back foraging roadside herbs This is the life I dreamed of after spending many years in an office. We retired to the country and don’t look back to our life in the crowded suburbs.

I have to admit sometimes I get so busy just trying to get a meal on the table that I forget to put on an apron. Thank you for this confirmation! I need to make it a habit once again.

So very true on quality, I'd much rather buy something that's older and already used than most of the stuff you find in a store (particularly for items that i'll use frequently). After years of trying to "buy into" the consumer, Christmas hoopla-I've opted out of lots of things over the past 3 years and instead focused on the joys that make me/my home/close family and friends most happy and you know what? I'm actually starting to enjoy this time. Can't wait to see what you churn out next!
I loved this episode. I so agree with the analog watch; I never bought one of those new watches for the reasons you are not using it anymore. I just loved this episode - bringing everything back to giving real gifts from the heart. This past year, I made 5 different varieties of fudge, a huge batch of "Christmas Jam" and homemade crackers and made a "basket" gift for my loved ones and close colleagues. It was a huge hit and warmly received. I have two aprons and, in addition, holiday/seasonal aprons.

I love all these ideas! I love a cute Mickey Mouse watch that I have, where Mickey points to the hour! I love receiving homemade gifts and love making baskets of homemade goodness to give! When dad was alive, we used to make him food baskets with wine and cheese and some homemade treats and for gifts and he always loved it!
I love the apron section in this. I cook from scratch every night and mess up my clothes. This is a good reminder to ritualize throwing on an apron!
The vintage apron was amazing with that pot holder part. The blue Jean apron looks cool. A old fashion gift I’ll have to say is heirlooms. Some of the best jewelry I’ve received his been loved a least a life time before.
Now THAT’s a good one! And, truly what a special gift to have something that your family has held on to! Yes, the vintage apron I found is amazing quality from a brand popular during the 60s-they don’t make them like that anymore! So good to see you again, I M ;)
I recently started making soy candles and body butters as gifts. I use mason jars for the soy candles. Also, chocolate covered strawberries are always a hit. These are quick to make and healthy if you use dark chocolate. They don't require measuring or mixing. I serve them on pottery or fancy platters that I get at thrift stores or garage sales for super cheap. These gifts make ppl feel special.
Yessssss!! I really miss the old fashioned Christmas seasons, it’s not like that anymore sadly but I try get as vintage as I possibly can for the holidays and lifestyle. My living area is 70’s central, thrift shopping is everything lol

Clearly I’m a little late to this party but I had some time to go back and watch some of your previous videos. I just loved this one! I like to find some beautiful stationary and give as a gift. Taking the time to actually put pen to paper is becoming more and more a lost art. Fun topic and since I’m right in throws of my final gift giving plans it was also a timely reminder.
I plan to make the Japanese wrap around aprons, may share some of my canned bruschetta (Ball recipe...yum!!) and I saw on another blog a contoured "bowl cozy" basically an oversized pot holder with contour sewn in to put under bowls in the microwave. I blend my own teas now (total novice) and was thinking of giving some of that. If time allows I may also knit some fingerless gloves. And kudos to you for breaking out of the forced upgrade cycle tech is training us to accept. I am even going to transition to Ubuntu on my computer to leave Microsoft behind. Love your podcast and I'm always happy to see you post. You have influenced me to do a lot more food preservation! ♥️
Having recently discovered your channel, I have some catching up to do. This one is a favourite that I’m sure I’ll watch again. I’ve worn my apron since I was 17, and it actually helps my clothes last longer. I usually give gifts from my kitchen for all occasions. Thank you for your videos.

Ah, a woman after my own heart. The “quality” of even basic home items just isn’t the same nowadays and often, what I’ve thrifted from antique shopping, estate sales is better than what I find “new”. I certainty find myself becoming more enthralled with old fashioned vintage as I ages so lovely to “meet” you!

I love the idea of bringing analog watches back. Just the idea that gifts should be useful seems so far removed from where we are right now as a society. I would add books to this list. Classic literature, books that teach skills, even books of sheet music. To me, there is nothing like the smell of an old book!

And I so much appreciate “meeting” folks like you, because in my real life this is not the case. You and your granddaughter will cherish your tea time, I’m certain! Estate sales and thrift stores are excellent places to look! If you’re not too particular, building a set over time from mid-matched plates admins saucers you find can be a great way to build your set!

I totally get this. Truly. Just because its my preference doesn't mean it always happens! I've def got my favorite pizza place and carryout on speed dial, and, there's #nojudgement there at all! This is the real world- I work full time outside of my home and sometimes I need my sanity more. The hubby is a total tech geek like you, so we round each other out. I mean, this channel is pretty much brought to you, via him helping me with external hard drives, and learning to edit, etc. and I'm so grateful for that :)
