The neck:waist trick doesn't quite work for everyone, especially when you get into the plus sizes. Instead I just bring a tape measure with me every time I go thrift shopping. Knowing my measurements and how to accurately measure a garment has saved me a ton of time in the fitting rooms!
Nice tip!
Oh that’s a great tip!! 😊
Yeah I'm thinking a tape measure would work better for me because I'm quite a bit bigger on the bottom half than the top half, my neck and shoulders are quite small but from the ribs down, exponential growth. I try things on. I don't trust that I can buy *anything* without trying it on other than like, a scarf or something, because my bust is only 5 cm bigger than my waist/I have proportions that aren't really catered to in a lot of off the rack clothing. So as tedious as it is, for me the tips are Try. Everything. On. (Yes, this means I almost never buy clothes online.)
I’ve gained some weight and I’m pear shape so the bottom half is big lol
I’ve noticed with the neck trick if the pant waist can overlap about an inch then if fits me
Yes, I agree. It would be lovely to have my body in the correct proportions as it used to be pre-babies. However, unfortunately, it is no longer. The neck tip doesn’t work for larger sizes 😔. I would need a neck the size of a car tyre to match my waist these days…😩🤣!
A thrift shop with a vintage section sounds heavenly!
Sage that yellow dress is just perfect for you! And the bomber jacket was worn by women in the 1940s but usually as a work jacket (think of Rosie the Riveter) or camping jacket and worn with denims or pants.
Ohh thank you so much, I’ll have a look at some photos now! 💕
Please share your alterations process! They would be so much fun to watch 💙💙💙
Yes, I was thinking the same thing. I'd love to see her turn that suit into a vintage piece.
Hi Sage, This video brought back memories of my Grandmothers. They had “house dresses” which were a solid color or floral. They always had a belt made from the same fabric. They wore cute suits and hats for more formal occasions. Always with a matching “pocketbook”. Which we call a purse today. Thanks for the happy memories! That yellow dress was made for you, along with the red sweater. Cute shoes and pants too!
The yellow dress is fabulous. It will look nice with different scarfs and belts
This was lovely! Please do more of these! I’d love to see what you’d find for housewares.
Yes, housewares!🙂
Oh, Sage. 🥰 Thank you for creating your channel. Your content connects me to my past in such a lovely way and it brings back so many cherished memories. I know it's hard work to film and you do it in such an engaging, pleasant way. I want you to know your efforts are making a positive difference in my life and I'm sure in the lives of your other subscribers, too! ❤️🌹😘
Aw your kind words mean more than you know, thank you so much!! 🥰
I found your channel a few weeks ago and binge watched :D Since then, I've found myself looking forward to your new posts. In the meantime, I tried watching other similar channels but no one comes close to you! You are such a joy to watch. Your calm demeanor and real-world-down-to-earth style combined with the playful music really makes watching such a pleasure. Thank you for sharing your gifts with the world!
I love that you have a good eye for finding modern clothing that look vintage. I have seen so many people pass up modern clothing at thrift stores that would would look perfectly vintage because they don't know how to make it look vintage. I would to see you do more clothing thrift hauls and maybe even home decor hauls when you have the time.
This was so fun!!! I haven't been thrifting since the pandemic, but now I'm raring to go! That yellow dress is stunning. Looks like it was made for you. 🤩
We had a USO Show at my church a few years back and I went to the thrift store to see if there was anything I could use that looked kind of like a WWII women’s uniform. Hanging on display on the wall was an army green shirtwaist dress that happened to fit me perfectly!!! Not only is it rare for me to find a dress that fits me correctly (I have large hips), but it also looked very 40s! I sang “Chin up, Cheerio, Carry On” (Judy Garland).
Your so lovely.!🌻💗
that’s so cool omg!! i’ve been looking as well for one for over a year now, no luck yet but still trying lol
The red sweater is adorable! Love the fur collar wrap, such a great find! 💖
The neck/waist measurement tip is GENIUS! Thank you!💗
And it seriously works!! 😂
Unless you are heavy hipped.
This was SO much fun, Sage! I loved everything you picked up. The op shops in Australia are so organized like a regular shop! It was so neat to see! Thank you so much for being you!!
She so sweet!🌻💖
That yellow dress is DARLING on you Sage, what a find even at $25! For pants I always bring a pocket measuring tape to check out the waist and rise when there's no dressing room, works great! Also in re: jeans I totally agree that you're likely to struggle BUT some great finds can often be had in the MENS section if you're not very hippy! If you have a straight up and down figure mens' jeans can work great and look very authentic since especially in the 40s women were often just wearing men's jeans and overalls/dungarees. If you find a great oversize men's pair you could also pay to have them tailored. I wouldn't recommend trying to alter them oneself unless you are an expert seamstress, jeans are tough, but the price of thrifted jeans and alterations will still likely be less than a new repro pair!
Great video! That yellow dress would be cute for Easter!
I really love the yellow dress and the red cardigan. Your videos are awesome.
Aw thanks so much! 💕
Can I just say that I don’t think I could love your videos anymore than I already do?? I want to live a “vintage” life in my next life. If I was a newly married woman with no children, I’d glom onto this life!!!!
Loved the red cardigan and that yellow dress was so cute! The cardigan looked especially nice with the fur collar. Good job on those shoes too! They looked very 40’s-50’s. Glad you are able to get out to stores now and no longer on lock down. How hot is it? Things are warming up in the States and Spring begins tomorrow!!!
I’ve never heard the neck/waist measurement before. I’ll have to give that a try.
It does work if you are a smaller build. Even with a bit of extra weight on I still use the neck measurement with tax 😄
I LOVE the yellow dress! It's really cheery, and fit's you perfectly.
Hi Sage! I just want to say that I love all your videos and I think you are such a wonderful women! I watch all your videos and can’t wait til next upload. Hope your study’s are doing fine. I would love to go to the hospital if I had a nurse like you. Love from Sweden😍😍
My toddler and I just love you and your videos :) she loves watching you and always goes “oooooh! hair!!” when she sees you! 💗 sending love from the US!
Omg, I've been waiting for this type of Video, not that I don't like your other Videos, they're lovely, I'm always looking foward to watching them and I just wanted to say thank you for putting so much effort and creativity in your Videos just to entertain us. Much love!! 🥰 Edit: I always had a hard time going thrifting 😂
Lol same!😂🤪
@@ethangoodrich3935 Glad I'm not the only one 😂
I had never heard the pant/skirt trick. I love that.
You are a breath of sunshine in this dark world!! I so enjoy your videos!! You are amazing!!
Hi Sage,
Yes love your video 💕💕💕
Sitting with my Vintage Darling ❤️coffee mug☕. First, I absolutely love your hair and everything you picked up! What fantastic finds 💕 The Nautical outfits look amazing on you❤️ Not too many people can pull that off so easily. (OMG... You are so right...it's very easy to look at the price, bring it all home and then never wear any of it 🙄)
Adding on here:
I have never heard of measuring pants around my neck before. I had a pair of shorts and I didn't think they were going to fit. (This video motivated me to go through my closet)
I wrapped the waist around my neck and it went around. I tried my shorts on AND THEY FIT!!
Had I known all the time that all I ever needed was to lose inches around my neck I would have saved so much money on a gym membership!! I am just going to keep exercising my neck now. 😂
Love it! Next thrift store shopping trip needs to be housewares!
I hope to graduate this semester. Hang in there!! I know you will be wonderful nurse. I can’t imagine making videos along with studies. You are a treasure!!!!!
Oh that’s so exciting!! 😊Aww thank you!!! 💕
I'm just catching up since I love to binge watch your videos and I swear, Sage, you could make a trash bag look glamourous! lol Watching you buy what would probably look very ordinary on most people and then having you try it on and it's instantly beautifully vintage is amazing! You definitely channel the 40s and 50s with such grace! 🥰
Awww! My grandma would love this..!💗🌻
Greetings from Texas!! That yellow dress looks absolutely devine on you! Love your channel, thank you for giving me hours and hours of viewing pleasure.
Aw thank you so much for watching!! Xx
I love wearing the shiny silky polyester shirts from the 70s.They are nice.
I love that red cardi! I would wear that myself. With a belt to nip in the waist it'd look even more vintage. Can't wait to see what you do with the 1980s suit.
And the blue Gunne Sax dress which you had on as you were shopping looks really nice too!
Your blue jacket looks a lot like my daughter's Air Force Jacket, she loves the cut.... and it is from the 1940's because they haven't changed the style since the beginning of the USAF....pretty cool! Love your style and all your videos! Thank you for sharing!
Sage, so happy to see your videos again. I think it would be amazing to go thrift shopping with you. I recently just got a vintage two piece swimsuit, I love it.
So excited! Scored big time at a local thrift shop. A vintage 50's handbag for $ .99!!
I love your reminder to buy only the pieces that you really love, because someone might need those clothes more than you.
That, my friends, is kindness in action.
I've been thrifting since the eighties, the hunt is super fun. Love your videos and your happiness that you share. Hugs from Montana
You rock all of the looks!
I love the striped shorts so much.
And the yellow dress is absolutely stunning on you.
Homewares are literally my favorite things to look at in thrift stores! Love this video so much. I definitely need to go thrifting to redo my wardrobe.
with Jeans, you can get the vintage style by looking for old MENS Levis - I used to go to op shops specifically for those. Nowadays you will be lucky to find them but if you do they're perfect.
Loved this episode! I’m not patient enough to go through everything.😖 I envy you. My daughter managed a resale shop and she divided everything by color and size. Example black blouses/tops, S,M,L,XL; blue blouses/tops…you get the idea. That way I could go straight to the color I like, then to my size, Bam!!! Saved a lot of time! I hope you will take us along on a houseware thrifting excursion! That’s my weakness too! Also, I would love to see you do vintage wedding gowns! I have a Pinterest board of vintage wedding gowns from the forties and fifties. You found some beautiful pieces! That sweater with the fur collar is adorable! Thank you for inviting us along! 🥰💕🙌🏻🤩
I was so excited to get this notification! Always a great day when there’s a new Sage video! I love the yellow dress! Wonderful finds!
Love the yellow dress, red sweater and striped shorts.
I love a thrift haul/go thrifting with me video! I've found GREAT skirts in thrift stores, but I look for wool skirts and I live in Canberra, which is cold enough for a lot of places to have them. They're often quite reasonably priced. I also found a lot of wool skirts in Sydney last time I was there, which was weird because Sydney isn't so much wool skirt weather? But the Newtown vintage stores were stuffed to the gills with them. You can usually get a good wool skirt for $30 or less - cheapest I found one for was $5, at a little church clothing stall. At Vinnies they're usually about $12. I also really love looking at the sewing and knitting patterns. So much cheaper than buying them new.
Me and my daughter's went thrift shopping yesterday. And I found dresses that made me think of you. I ended up buying two dresses for 9 dollars for both. I thought they were late 40s early 50s, but I researched and they were fashioned after late 30s early 40s instead. My daughter's kept asking me mom does this look 50s. We were looking for dresses for my aunts 50s theme birthday party today. When I used words like vintage or retro or hippie I confused them. 😆. Gone for 6 hours and had a blast.
This episode makes me want to go thifting right now! That yellow dress is gorg! Also, wow, there are a lot of thift stores in Australia. I can't wait to go there one day & check them all out! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
This was so much fun. I love thrifting/going to the op shop! And I love that you call them op shops in Australia- because they are full of opportunities!
Yes I love this! Also a few days ago I bought the revlon Cherries in the snow lipstick and I love it!
Loooove thrifting!! We get SO many of our vintage toys that way🥰 This video was so fun. Absolutely LOVE that red cardigan! It looks adorable on you!😍
I love the yellow one. That's super cute on you.
Your "OP SHOP" is much nicer than any thrift stores I've seen here in the USA. Ours are generally just junk I'd never actually buy. Once in a blue moon I go into one with a friend and may find something to buy for our home. Recently, I went to our church's thrift store to donate some books and came home with a stash of silverware for our summer home. It had been about 5 - 6 years since I'd been thrifting. But we recently got a summer apt. up north to go to get out of the Florida heat, and we are needing to completely furnish it from scratch - so I will be thrifting at the church's thrift store a lot more before summer.
Id love more of these videos! And of course the day in the life
Another terrific video, Sage! LOVE that yellow dress and the adorable red sweater are my favorites of your finds. 💖
I'm excited about going through our thrift store now! I really wasn't sure about it, but these vintage ideas make me look forward to seeing the clothes through different lenses! Thank you so much, Sage!
I love thrifting for vintage clothes especially for the 80’s I might try a 50’s style sometime soon
That yellow dress was made for you!!!
*The red cardigan is sooooo cute and vibrant.*
This is such a fun video! That yellow dress looks divine on you! I would love to see another video like this dedicated to home/kitchen items. I’m interested in your thoughts on what to look for.
Oh what a great idea, I’ll keep that in mind for another video! 💕
OMG!! I see the picture I use for My profile of Loretta Young in the different styles! So Awesome!! 😆😁🥳💖
The best op shop find I've ever made was a vintage-ish skirt in a tiny little rural town that otherwise had a lot of "frumpy" older-people styles of clothing (though, I admit, it would have been quite good for a man looking for more formal styles of clothing). So I think that my best advice that I could give to anyone who wants to give thrifting a go is that its a time and frequency game, not necessarily one of location - go often, go to several if there are several available to you, and don't give yourself the expectation that you have to buy something every time.
Sage, you would love going to the estate sales I go to in Spokane Washington. I have been selling Mid Century Modern items on ebay for 24 years. Last summer I was at a family run estate sale. All the clothing was still in the closets and in boxes in the middle of the bedrooms. Nobody was looking at the clothing. I went through it all and picked up 15 really cute vintage nities and about 6 slips for a dollar each. Wonderful colors in great condition. I don't usually buy clothing but I had to pick up all the baby doll nities and slips. I see a lot of 50s and 60s clothing. I know nothing about them so I always pass on them. They almost give it away. That is why I started watching your channel, to learn what to buy so I can sell it.
Steve
I love the red sweater paired together with the fur collar. Lovely on you!
This video popped up 3 minutes ago, what better way to spend my evening .x
Good afternoon darling it's so great to see you again I'm always looking forward to your videos 😉😃🥰😘
I have that exact same gold mug you're using...and it's the one my mom used for her coffee the entire time I was growing up. ♥ Nostalgia! And I LOVE shopping at thrift shops 🙂
Sage is my new hero.
That yellow dress is so lovely and perfect on you!
Oh thank you! ☺️ 💕
❤ ❤❤love ur channel just discovered it lately im catching up, i used to liv in Melbourne Victoria. I got my ❤ of thrift shopping frm there in fact not just thrifty shopping but also alternative ideas clothing shops i thought they had loads frm wot i was used to. None! In the lil towns darted about Victoria - great fun. Will always recommend visiting Victoria!!!
Best tip I have for op shopping is do it in posh areas and areas with older people, higher cost but usually done well in the past with this. Love your style Sage.
I'm so excited for another video! The yellow dress is beautiful. Thank you Sage for sharing these tips.
I saw a video on goth fashion and how older styles aren't outdated or badmouthed. They are cool and celebrated, even if they aren't the current hip. All of them are evergreen and they come back sooner or later. As for fashion in general, it seems that past decades aren't celebrated too much. There sure are some elements that come back, but not all- like the Farra Faucet wind style hair or an eduardian dress if you will. Im a big fan of the 50's and 60's. I have many family fotos of that period. The charm, elegance, the modesty, the vibe- as if things, that we surely miss nowadays. I am from a different country, yet it seems that we had lots of things in common in that time period. It''s refreshing to see people that not only love that elegant look of the time while being themselves. And you make it so effortlessly you and it suits you well! Your videos feel like Im being transported in a more simple, more honest analogue world. And your narrating voise is soo soothing! Helps me out in my sensory overload episoeds. Little secret? I have incorporated your tip on weekly cleaning meintanance of the household- a time saving and working formula. Have a lovely day! Cheers :)
11:04 another tip i have is know what fabric you feel most comfortable in! I prefer linen, cotton, or wool! I sweat a lot so acrylics and other similar fabrics are a no go for me as they hold smells and i find cause chafing! They also drape differently! It will be different for everyone but it is important to know! Thank you so much for this video Sage! I enjoyed it so much!
oh I am always fishing around in the side seam for the fibre content label. I straight up won't buy something if it's below a certain percentage of natural fibres. I will buy home sewn garments if I'm very confident that the fabric is something natural.
@@infamoussphere7228 Yeah So do I!
Very nice! I'm all about Vintage things. Trains, thrift stores, music and clothes. Really enjoy your channel👍 That blue coat you wore on the train was from a thrift store.😃
Seeing there was a new video from you literally brought a huge smile to my face!! 😁
Aww!! 💕❤️
Never out of style, Sweets.
This is fun. It's great to see Australia opening up. We are too. I love We are almost mask less. ❤ Great tips. Thank you 😊
The yellow dress was so perfect 😍😍😍you’re gorgeous ❤
Ever since you told us about the neck/ waste trick, I have saved so much time using it at the Thrift shops when buying some Jeans. I have told everyone about your fabulous trick as well! Thanks for that !!!
Yay! It is Sage Day. So look forward to each video. And it was fun to go theft/OP shopping with you too. Thank you for sharing your photos on pinterest. What fun to see & remember fashions my mother, aunts etc wore in the 40s & 50s & those I wore in the 60s. I continue to be happy seeing how much you enjoy such times. Thank you muchly!💕
I always feel so lost at vintage shops. Especially, when it comes to clothes. I wish I could go shopping with you.
You look absolutely STUNNING in everything you've tried on! Utterly lovely
Awww thanks!! ☺️
last week I went charity shopping(as we call it in the UK) and I found a shop that had a whole other floor dedicated to vintage clothing and I spent HOURS filling through the clothes. It was mostly 80s clothing but I found a really nice green jumper and a clothes brush. What I found is that charity shops in towns and cities have more choice because more people know to donate there. Hope this helps someone!
This video was actually really helpful im currently switching my aesthetic soooo having you give tips on how to get clothing for that certain aesthetic help alot. So thank you so much for that
I've been to a couple of thrift stores lately on errands, and both times I walked around the store to see if there was anything that jumped out at me. Both times I didn't buy anything, but it was still a lot of fun to walk around and look at the different items. I'm looking forward to watching your video because thrifting with friends is really fun :)
Very insightful tips! 💕I’ve started op shopping and it can be better overwhelming to decide which rack to start with. I’ve started with scarfs. I completely agree - there’s beautiful scarf options. Sending a virtual tea your way ☕️😊✨
You are so lucky you have such wonderful op shops. Our charity shops are tiny and just full of rubbish. It’s such a shame, but I’ve only bought my daughter a beautiful cardigan. She still wears it now, and she’s had it eight years. That red cardigan, and shorts are just lovely. Thank you for taking us on your journeys, and teaching us how to shop vintage. You always look so stunning, and your skin is just flawless. Much love 💖💖💖
Sage, you look good in everything you bought and you didn't pay too much...nice!
Your OP shops are wonderful ! What great finds in clothing you got ! Very good, informative video. Looking forward to your next one Sage.
I am so grateful you and James are safe from the floods!! 💖💖It was just heartbreaking to watch the devastation. 🙏
Love you Sage and James.... always love watching you... you are the sweetest person
I loved coming along with you on your shopping trip! What beautiful finds you came across! Love your videos!
My grandmother wore a jacket that was very similar to your blue jacket. I am 56 and she wore it in photos from the 50s to the 80s: hers was plaid.
Yayyy! I love this so much, your style is SO great
I absolutely loved going thrifting with you!! This was such a cute idea. That red belt is such a statement piece!! And that yellow dress, you looked just gorgeous in it!! I hope you do this again!!!! Thanks for sharing your tricks and tips with us! I'm trying to thrift shop more this year so this video helped a lot! Thanks again!
Hi Sage, my Granddaughters 2 and 11 months just love you. You are so
sweet. Love your videos. God bless you darling.
I think you are just about the sweetest, prettiest young woman I have ever seen. I love your videos and thank you for your wonderful advice.
