Adding Fish to the DIY Pond

- The second installment of the pond build is here! The pond still isn't entirely complete, but we've got fish in it now. This pond was build specifically for the group of fish that I already have, so I am very excited that they're finally in their new home along with 11 new additions.
On a side note, Goldfish (specifically long-bodied) are some of my favorite fish. I don't care what anyone says, goldfish are the PERFECT fish for this pond and one of the best fish period! They have big personalities, are beautiful and are easy to care for. What more could you want in a fish? I know they tend to have the stigma of being a "dirty fish" but I think they are actually a cleaner fish. I think this comes from people keeping them in homes that are too small or inadequately filtered. They constantly sift through the substrate, which makes debris more likely to be captured by the filter.Anyways, enough of my tangent... I just love these fish!

Again, a huge thanks for Oase for supplying the pumps! It was a huge burden off of me and was really appreciated. I'm using the Waterfall Pump 1650 for the skimmer and will be using AquaMax Eco Premium 3000 for the rest. I'll talk more about those in the next video and put some links below.

That would be really cool
Yes plz...🤓
Okhy 🔥
Omg yes!
Burying your fish to bring life to the plants is not at all sad. It's a beautiful sentiment. Growing up on a farm, my dad would bury our dogs that passed away under this big pine tree by our shed. I always thought that was beautiful, and realized it was for this reason a few years ago.
wait dogs? How many dogs ur family buried...
Süleyman Süzen what
@@suleymansuzen5543 seems like they lived on a farm. probably had around 3-4 dogs. Dogs only live around 8-14 years.
Agreed. We've got a big tree next to our house that we literally call "Home Tree", and bury most of our pets there so the tree can take back their nutrients.
@@suleymansuzen5543 lol what you're only going to own one dog your whole life? The plural of dog coming from a dog owner seems to have you SHOOK.
No goldfish left behind.
Dude had an idea, went for it, and made it happen. Well done!
Man I lost it when he was taking a dip and "couldnt resist" 🤣🤣🤣🤣, but anyways that's some beautiful work you've done, keep it up.
I was hoping I wasn't the only one 😂😂 talkin bout they'll have to learn to share with him too 😭
I love how he built it for his goldfish and just hang out with them inside the pond like buddies 😂
That might be cool for him, but it isn't for the fish. And neither is toxic spray paint..
Dreamingrightnow - Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t he use Krylon Fusion Paint, which is widely considered safe in aquariums if let to dry?
@@rg-ed5fr You're right, the company claims to be nontoxic, I've never been able to verify that and find their claims suspect, especially when considering that polymers in bottled water break down above 70 degrees (F) and never in direct sunlight, and yet, we still consume it huge numbers. But your point is a fair one, and maybe for short term use the damage is negligible, but I'm betting there aren't any long term studies; or perhaps no studies at all. The important one I'm trying to make about the fish is the impact of him in the water with the fish, even with it recirculating. Fish have very little resistance to that kind of exposure to foreign bacteria, and less to whatever chemistry he's introducing from various compounds in the soaps, deodorants, lotions, shampoos, etc. It's irresponsible of him, imo, to encourage that.
Dreamingrightnow ahh ok
@@dreamingrightnow1174 let the man live omg he very obviously loves and cares well for his animals

You should add some sort of stair case to allow small animals to crawl out if they fall in. Don’t want anything to drown.
Most animals can swim and have claws
Eli Egbert most garden animals aren’t very fond swimmers
Eli Egbert many animals that are too small can reach the edge of the pond. I’m mainly talking about animals such as turtles and rodents. Most animals could probably get out just fine.
@@joshuaspath6923 turtle are way to small to get over the border my red ear slider and boxer turtle can barely get on top of their 3inch feeding plate
Yes, let’s give predators an easier way to get the fish.
I have to admit, "initially" I wasn't feeling the design, but by the end of the video it grew on me.(yes I watched the entire vid) and because of that alone, had to subscribe. Now, I gotta find time to create more pond videos myself. Keep em coming!
At first I wasn't crazy about the borders. Now that it is finished I love it. It looks like a piece of nature that has been framed. This pond is natural and modern. Great video and great pond! Thanks for sharing.
Same here! I hope some moss grows on the frames so it looks more natural and rustic
Like God planned for it to be there😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The lesson being...it pays to wait and see the finished result before before turning up ones nose.
Waiting for the frogs to move in. They always do ;-)
I know! Where they at?!
The problem with that is the goldfish will eat all the tadpoles
@@SerpaDesign please add something like a small ramp for the frogs to leave the pond
@@PikaRaichupikapika just made a good ecosystem, probably not good to have too many frogs anyway

correct - Fish will eat the tadpoles :-/
i would show your videos to my students to show them, how we cant replace nature so easily....nature does it so simply and perfectly.
I love this! I’ll probably never have the energy to do this myself, but once I get a house I’ll probably pay to make this! So beautiful!
You should add a lighting fixture for the waterfall!! So that at night, it would have that shimmering moonlight ish effect. That would be so nice.
Theodore Joseph Viray yeah no that’s not natural
@@Galaxy-rj1kj the pond isnt meant to look 100 percent natural anyway?
I mean it's outside so the moonlight should already be there
Nick lol I dont think it supposed to be 100% natural.
That would be so cool and very pretty it would make it seem magical in a way
Sad to hear about the goldfish you lost. Beautiful setup nonetheless, I'm sure they're happy their friends got such a nice pond

The second installment of the DIY Pond build is here! Let me know what you think about the progress thus far. From the first video till now, I think it's night and day. Looks so much better with all of the riparian plant growth. Also stay tuned for the next installment. I'm not sure what that will entail or when it will be released, but there's more to come with this one... maybe a second pond too...
Very beautiful pond and garden 👌👌👍
So far so good, do you plan on painting the wood?
If you do make a second pond do it for the frogs
This is an incredible build! Thanks for sharing just how much planning and effort goes into making your own pond. I think after watching both vids, I've only one question left. I assume you have a hose running from the house to top off for evaporation?
You just never cease to amaze me! Thank you.
In my family, we have always buried pets with plants. You know, circle of life and all that. Last year when my cat died, I was distraught because I didn't have anywhere to put her, living in the city. Fortunately, a friend's boyfriend buried her in his backyard under a tree, in the middle of Winter. Now, I stick dead fish in houseplants for bonus fertilization. Sorry for the loss of your fishbabies.
It looks wonderful! I love that even though some fish died they still got to be a part of this beautiful creation. Thank you for sharing it with us!
You did it! You finally made a vivarium big enough to live in!
I've had many friends with ponds, do be careful about local birds especially herons. They will de-fish your pond without asking xD
Yep, happened to me! I learned the hard way
Raccoons as well.
My uncle had that problem too. He eventually put in some spiky plants (looked nice from a distance though) that kept most of the critters away.
you can actually set up a fake heron and that will keep most birds away- just move it around every day or two.
@@JimMeeker Yessss when I was new to keeping koi in a pond I didn't have anything to cover the pond and the next day a racoon came and ate like 2 koi. If it wasn't for my mom hearing him and coming out he probably would of ate all of em
That's so sweet how all his goldfish are together in plant life and in fish life aw
Me: i wanna do this
Also me: I’m broke and lazy soooo
Honestly, same. Haha xD
Maybe there's a correlation there.
I can't cuz I'm not allowed to break the concrete backyard :'/
I can build it I just need a gift card to Home Depot XD
Mopar 483 there are some tool libraries.
@@aa-to6ws a concrete backyard actually sounds sad. No plants? You can always build a pond on the concrete.
I’ve had a really shitty day today and with everything that’s happened I felt so defeated. Your videos bring me a sense of calm and happiness and I was so glad to see you posted a new one. Thank you for making such beautiful videos and please never stop
Sorry you had a bad day. We all have them. Keep your head up it always gets better my friends. 🐸
8 months into the future: Hold my beer.

It’s beautiful! Your smile while your sitting in the water says it all.
Something so calming about watching this and you not being /seeming to be in a hurry to finish it off.
This type of pond design would be amazing for a black water/amazon style habitat for larger predatory fish, it looks amazing!
I've never wanted to be a goldfish more in my whole life, haha.
( the pond is beautiful! all the plants you picked out REALLY pulled it together, the water quality is so clear(?!?!) and the fish look happy! Pond looks gorgeous !!
It came out so beautiful. I would love to have this in my garden. The addition of the fish is just perfect!
Thank you! I think the fish add a whole new layer that wasn't there previously.
I appreciate the way you buried your fallen fish to add new life to your garden. You found it sad that they died, and cared for enough to give them a proper burial with a practical purpose. The speaks volumes about how you appreciate small living things. I heard of other people not caring much about the deaths of their pet fish, but to you it means something
I love this... I can tell I could just sit by and watch the water and the fish for hours... it seems so calming.
Sir this is by far the best DIY Pond I have ever seen. Great Job!!!!

I bury all my fishies that pass on, always
You should put underwater cameras for a while video for.relaxation and to see the fish live. It sounds like cool idea!! This pond was so cute and pretty
It would be awesome for your second channel to have a long video (no music) of the pond. Just the sound of the waterfall, birds and nature.

Go away fish abuser
@Animal Toy Collection He is the definition of a Fish abuse wdym!!!
Ikr
@Animal Toy Collection He's literally the definition of a fish abuser, doing things he knows is wrong for money/fame. If you don't believe me please just search up "catch em all fishing betta fish" on UA-cam. This is only one example out of hundreds.
@Animal Toy Collection I told u please do ur research before making baseless claims about someone. Go search up catch em all fishing betta fish, and watch the video you'll see. But since u don't wanna listen I'll explain exactly what he did in that video. He bought hundreds of betta fish from petco, both male and female, he actually bought every single one in the store. Then instead of giving them a proper home he literally dumped every single one of them INTO HIS KOI POND!!! HIS KOI POND!!!! Now if u don't know what's wrong with that ur really stupid
I love how much work he put in for his fishies to have a gorgeous home
beautiful that you incorporated the original fish, rest in peace and amazing work
So much thought for a few goldfish. I like it. I think the world needs more of this thinking.
I love it. You should do a natural swimming pond in the future where it’s designed both for fish and recreation
Hope you had sunscreen on 😎
I love how I see you watch other fish videos. Cool!
The bit about burying the dead fish was beautiful :]
It's so beautiful! I love shubunkins! It's great that you incorporated the poor little guys who didn't make it into your landscape! Nothing gets wasted!
When I heard you built this pond for your fish, I got so excited 😂 The reason I found your video is because I'm going to build a pond for my 14 year old goldfish, this summer, so I needed to learn how to do it.
Did you build it?
@@cheyenneb4263 unfortunately not 😔 I ended up having to wait, but once March comes around I'll be able to hire a green-waste skip to clear out all the old bushes & plants in the spot I plan to put the pond; then nothing will stop me doing it!

Oh Tanner! This made me so happy! You know how much I love comet goldfish! I feel so happy to see them living the life!!!! Do you feel that the plants and shelters you made are adequate to protect them from predators? I hope you show the pond overwinter and let us know how the fish are doing. Overall I love how natural the pond looks even though it is enclosed in a frame structure which is beautiful in itself. PS: I absolutely love the top quality editing on this video.
You really need to build a small patio made of pavers or something with a small table and chairs with an umbrella awning !!! I prefer a more natural looking pond but I really like it, the patio with table and chairs will really make it more awesome !!! 👍👍👍
when you went in to the pond, at that point you achieved zen. also burying the passed away goldfish under the plant was special.
The pond is beautiful. I say this every time, but it's true. Your builds inspire me!
I really enjoy watching your videos! Seeing this series has both inspired my love for landscape design and given me ideas for my future backyard garden!
It turned out fantastic, and will just get better with time! I did a much smaller goldfish pond this year and love it, we recycled a 3x10 foot plastic tank that we cut into sections for raised garden beds, the bottom piece I saved for the pond for my porch. All the rocks and pebbles were recycled from older projects as well. Choosing the plants to go in and around it was the most fun.

It definitely clean enough to swim in on a hot day. Well done 🥰🦎🐢🐟🐠🦋🐞🐝🐌🦗🪲🐛🦐
this is great! what if you used a solar panel as a hinge lid on the filter box to help power the filters?
Filters would drain the solar panels rapidly as they require a lot of energy

I WANT TO BUILD A POND SO BADLY I CAN'T STAND IT! I built a teeny tiny 1 x 1.5 bird bath 2 years ago just to see if I could do it and it's the most popular place in my yard for wildlife and is still running great! I just need more materials for just a little bit bigger one, I live on 2 1/2 acres, with plenty of rocks so, got that covered at least! I'm so obsessed. You did an amazing job, it's beautiful!!!! You're an inspiration!!!

you should get some plants that would lower bugs to or around your little pond, so the goldfish are self fed
don 't worry, those plants roots will be down there soon and the goldfish will have plenty to eat.
They are self fed with skeeter larva. :D
Beautiful pond. Love the natural simplicity of it! Still curious about the groundwater issue. 3rd video with update? Thank you. Love your ideas!!

Very sweet of you to have buried the fish close to this beautiful pond where there friends now live
Those fish look so happy. I love goldfish and koi.
To acclimatize fish, it is not only necessary to equalize the temperatures. You skip the most important step of an acclimatization of the fishes. It is necessary to introduce new water always, little by little inside the bag, so that the water chemistry is equaled.
Multiple UA-camrs skip this process unless it's with very delicate or sensitive fish. King of DIY does it all the time too. you have to understand that goldfish are some of the hardiest fish available and live even under the toughest conditions, a pH change of 0.5 or a slightly new bacterial environment wouldn't harm them in the slightest.
Finely we have the official tanner torso reveal lol
Jk great vid man
Your gonna need to go much bigger with those fish. I did the same thing and those fish got BIG. I tried to figure out how to expand my existing pond to no avail and had to start over. Lovely job you did!
its really clear that this build was a labor of love, mad respect to you for pushing through all the hurdles involved in completing it. those fish are SPOILED
Really nice.
Two questions. One, what are your strategies for eventual algae blooms? Two, maybe I missed it, but what happens when you have a torrential rain event? Does it flood over and risk your fish and plants?
Thanks.
Obviously not Serpa, but he might be able to set up a pump to pump water out and downhill from the pond in heavy rain.
just build a perspex roof over it. simple its what my friends dad done, to stop birds and rain affecting the pond or taking the fish.
Algae can be addressed easily with a UV bulb. Just have a way to address the dead algae build-up and removal.
A uv lamp is ideally fitted before the filter ala dead algae removal fixed.
