Adding Fish to the DIY Pond

  • The second installment of the pond build is here! The pond still isn't entirely complete, but we've got fish in it now. This pond was build specifically for the group of fish that I already have, so I am very excited that they're finally in their new home along with 11 new additions.
    On a side note, Goldfish (specifically long-bodied) are some of my favorite fish. I don't care what anyone says, goldfish are the PERFECT fish for this pond and one of the best fish period! They have big personalities, are beautiful and are easy to care for. What more could you want in a fish? I know they tend to have the stigma of being a "dirty fish" but I think they are actually a cleaner fish. I think this comes from people keeping them in homes that are too small or inadequately filtered. They constantly sift through the substrate, which makes debris more likely to be captured by the filter.Anyways, enough of my tangent... I just love these fish!

    Again, a huge thanks for Oase for supplying the pumps! It was a huge burden off of me and was really appreciated. I'm using the Waterfall Pump 1650 for the skimmer and will be using AquaMax Eco Premium 3000 for the rest. I'll talk more about those in the next video and put some links below.

    Burying your fish to bring life to the plants is not at all sad. It's a beautiful sentiment. Growing up on a farm, my dad would bury our dogs that passed away under this big pine tree by our shed. I always thought that was beautiful, and realized it was for this reason a few years ago.

      @@rg-ed5fr You're right, the company claims to be nontoxic, I've never been able to verify that and find their claims suspect, especially when considering that polymers in bottled water break down above 70 degrees (F) and never in direct sunlight, and yet, we still consume it huge numbers. But your point is a fair one, and maybe for short term use the damage is negligible, but I'm betting there aren't any long term studies; or perhaps no studies at all. The important one I'm trying to make about the fish is the impact of him in the water with the fish, even with it recirculating. Fish have very little resistance to that kind of exposure to foreign bacteria, and less to whatever chemistry he's introducing from various compounds in the soaps, deodorants, lotions, shampoos, etc. It's irresponsible of him, imo, to encourage that.

Last year when my cat died, I was distraught because I didn't have anywhere to put her, living in the city. Oh Tanner! This made me so happy! You know how much I love comet goldfish! I feel so happy to see them living the life!!!! Do you feel that the plants and shelters you made are adequate to protect them from predators? I hope you show the pond overwinter and let us know how the fish are doing. Overall I love how natural the pond looks even though it is enclosed in a frame structure which is beautiful in itself. PS: I absolutely love the top quality editing on this video.

I did a much smaller goldfish pond this year and love it, we recycled a 3x10 foot plastic tank that we cut into sections for raised garden beds, the bottom piece I saved for the pond for my porch. All the rocks and pebbles were recycled from older projects as well. Choosing the plants to go in and around it was the most fun.

    To acclimatize fish, it is not only necessary to equalize the temperatures. You skip the most important step of an acclimatization of the fishes. It is necessary to introduce new water always, little by little inside the bag, so that the water chemistry is equaled.

    • @Buildoman2
      @Buildoman2 5 років тому +29

      Multiple UA-camrs skip this process unless it's with very delicate or sensitive fish. King of DIY does it all the time too. you have to understand that goldfish are some of the hardiest fish available and live even under the toughest conditions, a pH change of 0.5 or a slightly new bacterial environment wouldn't harm them in the slightest.
