Carl, for the new tank you must *do the cold-water, high-flow river/stream tank with NATIVE UK FISH* like shoal of stream minnow, spined loach, and shoal of gudgeons. (Thats a whole episode with nets, undewater cameras and waiders) For aquatic plants use simple Vallisneria, it will look absolutely brilliant in the flow and is super low maintenance. No CO2, low light. The most expensive unit will be the chiller and larger turn-around filter + powerheads. Use natural gravel, I prefer it to come from the beach, you will get more varied sizes and that contributes to the natural look. Add large pebbles and rounded stones. Make sure you internalize recent aquascaping techniques by watching : "HOW TO BUILD THE PERFECT AQUASCAPE FOR CONTESTS - BY WORLD CHAMPION JOSH SIM"
6:35 made my heart melt, you take such good care of them, admire them and keep them healthy, its such a big task and to do so happily is incredibly sweet, thank you for sharing these moments and process💗
Carl, for the second tank you could handpick some baby Koi. Then watch them grow from Tosai to Nisai. And watch how coloration and patterns start to grow and develop on every individual. In the end you can keep your most perfect ones for the large pond.
Hi Carl, I would think twice about the climbing plant above the pond, as it will increase your pond maintenance, with falling leaves and depending on what plant it is, it will turn your water pH levels up or down.
@@fishwithcarl Hi Carl & Chris, I also have a koi pond in the back garden. Next to the pond we have fence with a climbing plant, only during the spring you can see a yellow glow at the water surface. Some individual koi also seem to be bothered by it... Luckily it is just for a small period of time, but this plant is next to the pond. Directly above the pond would increase the spores that reach your water surface.
@@fishwithcarl you can mount a shade net right under the support beams with a climbing plant on top to catch falling leaves. a great plant is mucuna sp. which produces beautiful flower bunches.
You should put some rocks and plants in the pond hun. Ours are 35 years old,the oldest ones, and they like lots of oxygen, some rocks here and there, and yes it's necessary to keep their water very clean. Its necessary to spend some money for proper equipment. The pond is gorgeous and so are your fish. You're doing well
A wonderful video, Carl. I love everything you do, but I have to admit your koi videos hold a special place in my heart. You take such good care of them, and they are so beautiful it just melts my heart. ❤️ And your garden is just stunning!
Koi fry for the tank carl, we currently doing that to grow them on. Non heated tank just at room temperature. Nice to grow them on and see what we get in future. They growing fast!
Car I absolutely love your back yard. My grandfather has a pond on his property that he had over 100 gold fish put in. About 20 years ago the neighboring brook flooded and wild speckled trout had got in. Long story short we now have gold fish with trout spots all over their sides and trout with long gold fish fins and a goldish color. Cheers
Stumbled upon your channel by accident and love how wholesome your family is, I’ve always known about koi but never appreciated their beauty until I watched your videos. Typically I enjoy fresh and saltwater fish. Now you have me planning a pond of my own in the not so distant future, I was wondering what are some things you wish you knew before hand? How expensive is a quality koi pond? What is the price range of various koi? (Is it cheaper to buy juvenile koi and grow them out yourself?) and lastly what is the general space rule for keeping koi (how many/ ____ gallon(litre) I thought these points would be good for an introductory to koi video that I may selfishly love to see what you have to say and may give you an excuse to get back out to Japan :) keep up the amazing work Carl!
Hey Carl, I had commented on your past video in which you built the koi pond. In that comment I talked about how I have a short attention span and that your video helped me find some calmness. Recently, I've hit a rough patch in life and have been stressing out a lot due to it. That's when I remembered about your channel, I searched for an update about the koi pond and came across this video. The gentle and wholesome vibe your videos have is something that I think is really precious, it helps me calm down and brightens up my mood. Your videos, you and the koi pond have become a comfort space for me which I come back to whenever I feel low. Thank you so much! ❤

Carl, You should defenetly make a tropical tank in that empty tank in the room. With much smaller tropical fishes, driftwoods and lots of plants. Don't worry about the algee. Put 1 inces of dirt or mud (collect it from a nature lake, or river) on to the bottom of the aquarium, 2 inces of sand on top of it, add some driftwood, and rocks plant the plants 1--1,5 inc deep into the sand, add 1 inc of leaf leathers the top of the sand, the water and the fishes, some algie eaters, coridora catfishes, Kuli loaches, a large group ot neon tertras, rasboras, guppies or any type of this will thiving in there. You can add shimps, and snails too. Feed them 2-3 days and dont overfeed them and it will be fine.
Great vid and this is the most exciting part of owning a pond for me. One thing i would recommend is to have a hole in the poly for gasses to escape. Your pond will naturally produce gasses that need to have somewhere to go.
Hi Carl, to insulate your pond. Try those packaging airpillovs that you can buy everywhere they sell packaging material. Really good insulation and they let light through. Could be placed under your plastic sheets 👍
Carl, could you please do a video based on koi keeping. Looking at things such as how often to do water changes, and scraping koi and what to look for if thats something you do? Cheers, Ben
You and your brother Alex have the most amazing way of making video’s. So easy to watch. A bit of advice with your koi pond. It would be a good idea to fit jump guards when you haven’t got the covers on.
Thanks again Carl for another amazing video!!❤It is great to see your fish in tip top condition and how big they have grown over the years (They are huge) and it is brilliant to see you trying your best to keep your fish healthy during the cold months. Well done Carl!!!❤🎣🐟
My grandfather ran a commercial greenhouse in the 1950ies. In the potting shed they have an oil drum buried in the ground, and surrounded by concrete, They had a half a dozen spotted carp in there, about 6 inches long. No filters, no special feed, they threw worms in occasionally and used the water fior some of the plants.
Carl great video but your polycarbonate sheets need to bee on a tilt otherwise condensation bubbles merge on the underside and drip back into the pond which is a bacteria risk. Also you need an air gap to allow Co2 to gas off.

That new tank should be used for growing out koi fry and moving them on when they’re big enough. Rewarding, perfect too look at and refreshing when they’re moved on!
