So I Ended Up With 100 NEW Fish. Now What?

  • I'm always happy to take on or adopt animals that need a good home, but I wasn't expecting this. One of my best friends told me his aunt had some baby koi that needed a new home. I've wanted to get some koi, so I figured this was a good opportunity to get them. However, they were not koi and there ended up being WAY more fish that originally described. Either way, I gladly took them all.
    I also took the time to address Cookie the snapping turtle's tank. I've needed to do it for awhile and intended to wait until I move it into the new animal room. I couldn't wait much longer, though, so I got to it! It's crazy to see how much she's grown.

    I was NOT expecting this many fish, but I still gladly took them all. Initially I was thinking not to keep them all, but the more I consider my option, the more I think I may keep them all. What would you do if you were in my situation? Also, what do you think about Cookie? Crazy to see how big she's getting, but she's got a long way to go. Anyway, enjoy the video and have a great weekend SerpaSquad!

      I would suggest selecting those, that have traits you wish to breed with your original goldfish, and perhaps offer to donate the restbof them with a special build for a worthy organization?

      I seriously consider moving to a state that will allow me to have an alligator snapper every time I see Cookie.
      As far as the fish go, I would dig an enormous pond that would start with a large, shelf like waterfall, covered in various mosses. Reeds/cattails as the waterfall back drop. Large main body pond area, with a few little bay areas with lots of plants and hiding places.
      I know it's not natural, but I really want a viewing window in whatever pond I end up constructing. Feel like I get better acquainted with my fish that way.

    As someone who breeds goldfish I honestly don’t think it’s too crazy that they produced 100 babies, I think the crazy thing is the size and level of color variation in those babies considering their age.

      Such a wide variation really makes me suspicious of the claim that they all came from one pair of goldfish.... er "koi".

    • @benlittleforest
      @benlittleforest Рік тому +16

      Maybe both of the fish were pregnant when the old owner bought them, so instead of one mating pair, both of them had a brood that they released when they were released into the original pond. That could explain some of the variations in color.

    • @benlittleforest
      @benlittleforest Рік тому +19

      Oops I forgot that fish breed in the water and they don't have intercourse, so they would have to be a male and a female, nevermind

    • @MDestron2282
      @MDestron2282 Рік тому +6

      @@benlittleforest Yup. With goldfish and koi the male fertilizes the eggs as the female lays them.

    This is probably not feasable, but in a perfect world it would be so cool if you could make a wall-sized enclosure for all the goldfish that went down both walls of your hallway. That way you could have a hallway like the aquariums I've seen where it looks like you're walking through a tunnel with water surrounding you on all sides. Again, this is probably not possible because you'd need A LOT of glass and a way to get behind the walls. Plus, all of that water would be very heavy and difficult to clean. Still, making any version of this idea would probably look really really cool.

    I really enjoy your channel. Reminds me of my early years when I kept many types of "herps". When I was very young (60 years ago) I would save up my money and walk down to Woolworths and buy a baby slider turtle. I spent many hours trying to learn how to keep them happy. I didn't succeed very well but it started me on the journey. I was able to take a course in herpetology in college where I got to do a project in the turtle room studying feeding behaviors. I think they had every type of turtle and tortoise. I was in heaven. Now, I just have an Exoterra tank with a tiger salamander that I found under a piece of metal roofing curled up in the dry dirt. I have had him for 5 years now. His or her name is Lizard. Thanks for the inspiration.

    Looks like the reptile room is coming together nicely. Thanks for showing the sanding! They're much older than what she said they were! As goldfish, common or otherwise, don't get their colours until they are at least 1yr old and sometimes 2 to 3yrs old. So she may well have put in only 2 fish. But that doesn't mean to say that there weren't already fish residing in it. 😂
    Also you have ample room in your new gdn to build a mahoosive pond for them. Which I very much look forward to. You could even build it up with a different tier system of ponds and so separate out the different types into different layers of pond that could in effect cascade down from one tier into another.
    Looking forward to seeing how your new animal room develops over time. Such a magnificent space!

    Personally I love Shubunkins. The black ones looked really good too. I’d be picking the ones with mixed colours. Of course it’s all your personal preference. I love goldfish, well only regular bodied ones. I’m not into the fancies. The Rubbermaid tubs are awesome. I used to use one as a trough for my horses. I loved that they have a drain plug at the bottom. Can’t wait to see the basement finished.

      I think goldfish breeders have lost control playing Dr Frankenstein, creating some monster goldfish they call “fancy.” Those “Lion Head Orandas” that look like their brains have exploded out of their heads and others like the “Ranchu” (sp?) bred to not have any dorsal fins are just genetic abnormalities that can’t even swim properly.

    Tanner, as talented as you are at animal husbandry I would suggest that you make a nice interior landscaped pond in your animal room plus a great one outdoors. I had a large pond outdoors and found my goldfish never over bred their pond, seems nature has a way of taking care of that along with natural predators. Outdoors the pond evolves into a natural ecosystem overtime. I’m 66 now and installed my first pond in my mother’s garden for her when I was a teen. Stocked it upon setup with ten feeder goldfish and they were breeding by the next spring and huge. Mom had a couple peach trees that over hung the pond and it was fun to watch the fish move the fruit that had fallen in like boats as they ate it.

    As for the gold fish, I think I'd use a good chunk of ya land to build a massive pond with bog areas around it to act as natural filters, and just because I have an obsession with carnivorous plants, I'd have plenty in bog areas.

    Cookie is beautiful and the goldfish were a nice surprise for you! I really enjoy your pond videos. I'd love to have an outdoor pond but don't dare. The local frogs, raccoons, etc. would likely eat the fish. I live fairly near Houston, Texas, so periodic backyard flooding is common and any surviving fish could easily end up in the flood control ditches and become invasive. I'll just continue enjoying your pond and other setups vicariously.

    Your little turtle is cute! She's grown so much! Just goes to show how well cared for she is. I've saved alligator snappers and I'm sure common ones from the road. Not sure how to tell the difference, but when you're trying to move quickly and save them, what kind they are isn't a big deal. I'm in Memphis/North MS. My fav local species are the eastern box turtles, they're SO cute. Our dog found a hatchling in the yard this past summer, didn't hurt it, and we placed it safely on the other side of the fence and let it go about it's business. Congrats on the goldies! They're pretty little things. I've not had a lot of luck keeping them indoors, either they're messier than tropicals or I didn't have the filter system working right. I like them outside and in bigger ponds, they seem to do better. Can't wait to see your new builds, keep up the great work!

    Hey SerpaDesign! I love your videos and you’ve taught me so much, but I was wondering if you’d ever do a video on things that didn’t work out for one reason or another? Maybe you’re so good that nothing fails, but even if you no longer have failed experiments, I’d love to hear you talk through them.
    For example, I was planning on turning a display case or shadow box into a terrarium - and then saw you built one - but I know they’re tricky. How did it survive?
    Likewise, what plants did you include at first but now use less?
    Just questions. I think they’d be super helpful for us novices.

    I think you the first UA-camr who didn’t clickbait the “100” fish. It goes without saying but thanks

    I love goldfish; the ones you got look really pretty and healthy. I’m excited for the goldfish pond.

    My Goldies began as an impulse. I bought a one eyed fish out so the feeder tank when I was working at a Petco. Since then I’ve gotten 4 more with only one loss… I didn’t think fish could get any better than bettas but these fat little water puppies are the most forgiving fish I’ve ever had. They’re putting up worn a small tank rather well, until I can get out of this apartment.

    Some of the new goldfish could be Feeder Fish.
    At the moment I am very intrested in ethical feeder animal care.
    There are so many things to think about!
    And at the end of the day if you have an omnivores/carnivor pet: It needs to eat.

      Goldfish make a poor choice for feeder fish, they produce an enzyme called thiaminase, which destroys thiamine (aka vitamin B1.) Feeding a diet rich in thiaminase producing fish will result in vitamin B1 deficiency, which easily leads to disease and death.
