KTM clearly see the potential for the 890 adventure in a very specific place. It's a 'gravel road bike'. In their words it's the best in that class on the planet and from the UK press intro, I can't tell you if that's true.
What I can tell you, is what our short 2hr street ride taught us, what the small changes they've made add up to and why you or may not want to buy one.

Good work Llew. There are not too many contributors in this space that I personally take much note of however you are one of them. You possess credibility and your ability to articulate your views and opinions are conveyed in such a way that they can only be received as genuine. Again not always the case in this space. Keep it up. Appreciations from a 790 R rider in Aus!

The preponderance of reviews got stuck in KTM's controlled environment: the R off-road only, and the S on-road only. It's pretty well known the R model is incredible off-road, but I'd love to see someone flogging the R model on the road, and perhaps see someone really trying to push the S model off-road. It's odd to me that KTM seems to want to control things in a way to prevent this kind of a review. That said, I appreciate the notes on the 790 S suspension and the minor improvements the 890 S may have brought about.

The more adjustable suspension means you can dial the front in as you go.A stumpy screwdrives means rear rebound is a just a few clicks either way

@@kttmmedellin7138 yeah, and i've seen some supermoto wheels for the R too that look awesome and turn the bike into a top notch missile. i think i'm just expressing my irritation with KTM for being so rigid with the environments they provided journalists.

@@inthesupernovashadow i bet a lot if it is due to what tyres they choose to mount on the bikes fir the press days. The R is awesome fun off road with decent off road tyres. But you’ll never get the best out of the bike off road with less off roads oriented tyres. Likewise you’ll never get the most out of the S on tye road with off raid tyres on. So to test both bikes in both environments they’d need to change tyres mid day or arrange two more press days which probably isn’t practical.

I ride the 790S on some pretty challenging off-road. It handled well enough in stock form, but I did a significant suspension upgrade (Andreani / Nitron), and now it’s truly impressive. For my height, the seat height is the issue with the R.

Great review on a bike I am planning to buy. Waiting on the 2023s to hit the street. I may pick up a low milage 2021 or 2022 which is why I watched this review. Also looked at the KTM 1290 Adventure S, which is appealing because most of my riding is low traffic two lane roads, gravel and dirt tracks where I would not dream of taking my Triumph Rocket 3 GT. I am keeping the Rocket. The KTM will be in addition to, not a replacement for that bike. Nothing terribly technical offroad for me these days. Plenty of exciting options from KTM.

Great review of the KTM 890 Adventure. I already have a KTM 690 Enduro R for my off-road. So, I am looking at testing the KTM 890 Adventure. Thanks as always. Kam

I watched this again having bought an 890 S (why don’t they just call it that?). It’s been with me for just 220 miles (ice stopped play) but so far it’s very nice and so much more manageable than my ATAS DCT which was a handful especially in the real world of around town. I’m only 5’8” but with the seat in the higher setting and tip toes just feels so easy and a decent riding position unlike the Honda’s sitting-on-the-toilet. Commanding and involving rather than reading the paper. I’m no off-roader but want the potential to ride the TAT in the US in 2024 which I’m hoping, tyres aside, it will do whilst being my everyday bike otherwise. I’d certainly like more “adventure” bike stuff and like the detail you go into. The tech spec we can all read. The real world is what counts. Thanks, Ian

How is it on long hwy rides. I’m in Arizona and we will easily do 100 miles hwy , 60 miles dirt, then 100 miles back. While I’m aware of KTM’ s prowess on dirt, is it comfy enough on the long hwy days. (Like a GS or AT)..?
Thank you, and you guys are the best Adv channel out there!

As per this test, I don't really know. It's a while since I rode the previous version and it was okay. Not massive wind protection but the screen is good. Seat is HARD but roomy.
It's not a GS or AT on the highway but it's also a very different bike.

it's no GS or AT but it is more comfortable than a naked or many sport-tourers. i had 1000km days on the 790r, i was less tired in the end than on the er6f (faired street bike). to me, it's absolutely fine for a couple hundred km to get to the dirt

So the suspension issues you had especially with the 790 on road (being too harsh) were not able to be dialed out on the stock suspension with settings tuning? I appreciate how you guys will tweak settings on test bikes, was that done on the 790?
Also, how does acceleration of the 890 compare with the Vstrom 1050 XT?

I'm considering an 890, no R, and a Triumph Tiger 900 Rally. It seems the 900 Rally is almost as good on the road as the 900 GT, but I could get some (not too tough) off road with it as well. I have no worries about the comfort on the 900 Rally, but I am concerned about it on the KTM890 for longer road stretches. I want to be able to travel on road, say 400-500 miles in a day. I am also concerned about KTM reliability. If anyone is familiar with these two choices, and cares to comment, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    • @BrakeMagazine
      @BrakeMagazine  3 роки тому

Well, I've ridden and reviewed both and they're quite different. The Tiger 900 rally is a more rounded bike and probably better for what you want. It's pretty good at technical off road too 🙂
