David passed away two days ago, 3/3/23, taken from us too soon by long Covid and eventual pneumonia and kidney failure. His music-promoter friend Doug Reynolds had organized a T-Shirt sale benefit sale and donation drive through Custom Ink for Dave several months ago to help pay his medical bills. (It just amazes me that we live in the richest country on Earth and yet we can't seem to take care of our own famous musicians as they age without having to set up a go fund me or similar charity event.)
I saw this when I was a 21 year old junior at the University of Oklahoma. Little did I know that roughly ten years later I would be standing with him at the historic Sons of Hermann Hall (East Dallas, TX) having a Shiner & making small talk. The man is a master of strings.
It was called Sunday Night the first season, then Night Music for the second and final season. It was hosted by David Sanborn and Jools Holland. They often paired musicians of different styles with outstanding results. I would love to see all the complete episodes again.
Man do I love me some Dave! Saw him several times in the 80's with the band. Best was a show at the Red Creek in Rochester, NY. Got there early for some food, and the fellas were doing sound check (nailing "Premature"). Place was near empty, so we got to chatting with everyone - friendly folks all. I even managed to convince Dave himself to accompany us to the trunk of my car, where lay my latest weird guitar find, a Mosrite Ventures model, which he was nice enough to sign, very legibly I might add. If anyone out there sees that guitar, IT'S MINE!!! (grumble grumble) Anyway, it was a fantastic show in a small club setting, with us idiots sitting literally within inches of the stage, ignoring our chicken wings because the music was too good, getting sly looks and even a shout out from Dave... Maybe my favorite night of music ever.
I saw ElRayo-X 4 times, and at one show was right up against the stage in the shadow of Dave's Supro lap steel, getting my ears blasted from the Dumble amp about 8 feet away. I musta lost some hearing that day, but I'd do it all over again! Also saw David play with Ry Cooder several times, and with percussionists Wally Ingram and Hani Nasser. His music changed the wiring in both my brain and my heart, and I can count the number of musicians who affected me like that on just one hand.
In later years, David left the original Weissenborns at home and toured with various copies. I met and spoke with him at a gig where he showed me a Mexican-made Weissenborn clone which he said was "staggeringly good", after some tweaking and experimentation with the string heights at the bridge and nut, and finding which tuning each individual clone sounded best in. I held one in my hands, it was nearly as light as a feather.
@@goodun2974 Yes! I attended 52 Lindley gigs in 30 years and opened for him 5 times. I know of the Mexican Weissy you speak of! I will miss my friend, as you will.
Typically spelled as "Bon Ton Roulet". I 've seen and and heard him play this live, and there are several recorded version on his "official bootleg CDs, but this is my favorite out of all of them. It's just so rhythmic and infectious that the audience starts clapping along halfway through the song. By the way, near as I could tell, the tuning is cgcgce, from low to high. Use heavy strings and tune down to C, don't tune up higher! Good luck trying to duplicate David's hybrid strumming finger-picking style as seen here, whatever you want to call it! By the way, on the same TV show episode, Dave also played Werewolves of London, with the house band, and Jorge Calderon on bass; and played electric lap steel behind Curtis Mayfield and Taylor Dayne singing People Get Ready.
Nice, informative comments. The other performances from the same airing are also on this channel, aside from the Taylor Dayne song [the tape had a major flaw appear on that section, so wasn't good enough to share...]. Thanks!
Actually, it's spelled differently on almost every recording. The correct spelling in French is Bon Temps Rouler, but Clarence Garlow's original is Bon Ton Roula
Good un TQ for the guitar tuning. Been affected by David since I saw a rerun of Soundstage here in Chicago in/around 78/79. Secret fact: I wore a red sweatshirt like Jackson ALL THROUGH H SCHOOL, because I wanted to be like him. Now, because of you tube, I’m going to devote some effort to studying David’s style.
@@JohnDoe-jc3cl , studying David's style could take a decade or two; learning to play anything like him could take several lifetimes! Its a rabbit-hole worthy of exploration and excavation; better remember to drag a string of yarn with you so you can find your way back out!
HE RECORDED IT JUST AS 100'S HAVE. IF ANYTHING IT'S CLIFTON CHENIERS SONG.. BUT A MAN NAMED CLARENCE GARLOW WAS THE FIRST TO RECORD THE EVER-CHANGING FOLK SONG.
ummm.... it's she's got WAYS like the old crawfish. If Dave, the author of Catfood Sandwiches, had written it it could be brains, so I understand the mistake.
Uhhhh, Well I would like to comment Dreamer.....I've wore out my old VCR playing this song as I had recorded it, as I was viewing it back in the late 80's....Very few (Very Few) people could pull out a lap guitar & blow your SHIT away like Lindley...& He's STILL doing it!
Mr. Dave died today. I'm sad. God rest his good soul. Hope to see you in Heaven, Dave.
The person who gave this a thumbs down deserves a punch to the face
Best. Lindley could play a toothbrush and make it sound like heaven
Damn. Fine way of putting it.

Rock In Peace - David Lindley March 3, 2023, you are greatly missed..
The red pants.
Rest in peace, David! You will be missed!!
RIP Mr. Lindley.
I saw David Lindley 3 different times in the early eighties here in Portland. Each show was fabulous, in a small club atmosphere.
I am so sorry to hear of your loss.
RIP David. 💔

How did you see this in Norman, OK? I'm from Tulsa. I don't remember anything like this on TV in the '80s. Maybe I missed it???
It was an NBC show on late Sunday nights. I think it lasted about 2 seasons. The Leonard Cohen "Tower of Song" performance was excellent, also.
@@BlindWillieJackson Thanks. Can't believe they showed this in the Bible Belt! I'm sorry that I missed it.
Great Version! So much betta than the mere 12 bar arrangements. “Mr. Lindley is one fine playa- he’s got more talent than a dragon slaya”
A Jewel.
This GREAT belongs in the HOF .
R.I.P. David. Godspeed!
Lindley's right hand is a machine!!

He is such a Master of entertainment. Of all the music I have heard in my life this song is in the TOP 10! Thank you, Mr. Lindley...

A musical savant. RIP Mr Dave.
Wunderbar - I love it!

good job !
David is playing an original 1929 "Weissenborn" guitar!

Hoooo-lllleee SHIT, this is good!
"she got brain like the ol' crawfish"
lol not sure why but I love that line. good on ya, Lindley
TheWonderStraw, IIRC, it's a Professor Longhair song.
I read your comment yesterday then had a real weird dream about big walking crawfish dripping in butter last night-scary but funny today

Certainly NOT Saturday Night Live.
He kinda looks like a hippie professor from Gilligan's Island
Oh he IS a hippie professor. Let there be no doubt!
