In 1992, my acoustic guitar manufacturing company, La Jolla Luthiers, displayed at the Winter NAMM show in Anaheim. Through a friend of a friend, we met Mike Kenneally, who was hoping to get free tickets into the show. So, we made a deal with Mike that if he would spend a couple of hours demonstrating our line of acoustic guitars in our display booth, we'd give him 1 of our 2 guest pass tickets. Mike agreed and mentioned that he knew David Lindley and that David was also hoping to get tickets into the show. So, we made the same deal with David. At the time, Mike was an up and coming musical entity who played around the San Diego music scene. I knew of David from his work with Jackson Browne, El Rayo X, etc. We were obviously thrilled to have such talented players demonstrating our instruments but it didn't strike me until later of just how iconic that moment was. RIP David. The music world will be a little less without you.
I, literally just last night, was just exposed to David Lindly through a very hip radio station in western Washington, and I have not stopped searching and listening to his music since....I'm 54...better late than never. And now I understand he has left us behind. My life is richer for hearing his music. R.I.P. David and thank you.
I first discovered David Lindley playing his lap steel with Jackson Browne's band on 1970s TV appearances. Then My wife and I got to see him live at the 1990 Seattle Bumbershoot Arts Festival, alongside singer/guitarist Ry Cooder (available on UA-cam).
R.I.P. David. Seen him everytime he came to or around Santa Cruz since El Rayo-X days. One of the best string any string player there ever was. Glad to have meet him a couple of times.
Had the great pleasure of dancing to Mr. Dave and El Rayo-X as they played this - and much more - in a club in Vancouver, BC in the late 80s. Best time ever.
Holy crap - what a lot of talent! Lindley is the best! Revising this post after he passed. He was an amazing musician. We got to meet him in Philly after a show and he was so fun and friendly to talk to. RIP to a legend.
SO... here's David Lindley & most of his band El-Rayo-X...w David Sanborn....I met them all in 1988 - Edmonton & Calgary on their tour thru....We all went to a House party after the show in Calgary where I talked to David. I told him I practiced my alto to his amazing stellar solos on Jackson Browne's albums....He replied " That's interesting... cause I practiced my guitar playing to alto sax players....like Coltrane & Charlie Parker -The Bird".....we shook hands and chatted often thru out the evening into the daybreak!! That house musta held 100 or more people in it. I'll never forget hanging with those laidback alley cats from California~~~~~Rest well my dear ole friend~~~You did good.
Jackson Browne gave David Lindley one of the best compliments I've ever read. On playing live onstage, he said Lindley never played the same solo twice. Incredible creativity.
oh and Jorge Calderon from Puerto Rico on bass...david's and Jackson's bassman for years..I love it too! My band is gigging on Halloween this year 2021..we're covering this version....yes 'mon irie!
Parallax, I thought I was done crying, but you just made me cry again. Gotta have to go listen to David playing Bon Ton Rouler on this same show in order to lively up myself again.😭🤧
I worked 3pm to 11pm when this show was on in the late 1980’s. I would set my VCR to record it every week. I remember this particular show well. RIP David Lindley.
My gawd the defintive version by the defintion defying El Rayo X. I feel so lucky to have worked this band’s tech a bunch. Lindley plays anything with strings. Also, as a club tech: in the the Top 5 Club Bands of All Time. Nothing is like an El Rayo gig. Happy Howl- O- Ween, Fellow Wolves!🎃
kids, connect with this fun(ky) stuff as long you can....reach out and spread this great music! late bloomer in the mid-nineties, but a disciple from then on...very, very, greasy....indeed
Thanks for posting this great video, which I just viewed for the first time! What a great take on this classic song. Damn, even though I'm going to listen to every recording David Lindley has ever done until the day I die, I'm saddened he's no longer with us to keep sharing his musical genius with us. Y'know, as great a musician as David is, I'm impressed by how he avoided the solo spotlight and instead let it shine on his fellow musicians in the band.
Happy to hear that you enjoyed the clip so much (and Mr. Lindley's talent), and took the time to add a note of appreciation for sharing the clip. Thank you!
Warren would love this ! Such a great band and David Lindley is such a treasure .. he can play almost any stringed instrument .. not sure about a Cello !
Lou Salute Warren was a big fan. He is credited on six of Warren Zevon’s albums and if you listen you can hear him uncredited on others. I wouldn’t be against him having recorded on Cello. I think he is a virtuoso on anything with strings.
Seen Lindley in a video... playing lap steel ..guitar..with Terry Reid....and Co...... on the song 'Dean'......Glastonbury Music Festival 1971...Freakin Awesome. ...the owner of the video has since removed it though.
Mr. Dave is great, of course. Sunday Night or Night Music with David Sanborn and Jools Holland. Always an eclectic mix of some of the best, beautifully programmed and nothing like it before or since, sadly.
This is NOT Saturday Night Live it’s David Sandborn’s (Saxophone) Night Music. Sandborn played sax on Bowie’s Young Americans and was a frequent guest player with Paul Schaefer’s Letterman band.
His Red Rock show opening for Jackson Browne years ago was great. Just in the hour-long sound check he did 6-7 different versions of Mercury Blues. The last time I saw him was in Boulder with Wally Ingram for the Twango Bango tour.
Kinda ska meets Talking Heads version...Lindley just exotic...jeez that band is ridiculously talented group! Saisee Bullock etc etc all name guys plus DB

you should listen to pulsating dream when he was in kaleidoscope.
find david doing ‘mercury blues.’
crazy.
R.I.P. David. Seen him everytime he came to or around Santa Cruz since El Rayo-X days. One of the best string any string player there ever was. Glad to have meet him a couple of times.
Lucky you!
Saw David & El Rayo X in maybe their first show, at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds in August of 1987. They opened for Santana and the Dead.
He played at The Catalyst often. His band was so much fun especially with Ras Baboo and Smitty... RIP David... you did it your way
Miss you David....thank you for the music. Jah
George Duke and David Sanborn playing with David Lindley; sublime!
Magic hands of David Lindley I've been lucky to live in the greatest musical years, ever.
I once had the pleasure of see David Lindley live in a small venue. Great memory.

Thanks for sharing that very interesting experience, revealing musical influences of immense talent.
David Lindley made _the_ funnest music on the planet.
This is a BRILLIANT cover of Warren Zevon's Werewolves Of London, what a an awesome dance groove sound totally love it!!!
Jackson Browne gave David Lindley one of the best compliments I've ever read. On playing live onstage, he said Lindley never played the same solo twice. Incredible creativity.
He was just a real improviser
What a band! George Duke, Hiram Bullock, Omar Hakim, David Sanborn, Philip Saisse. I love it.
oh and Jorge Calderon from Puerto Rico on bass...david's and Jackson's bassman for years..I love it too! My band is gigging on Halloween this year 2021..we're covering this version....yes 'mon irie!
David Sanborn what instrument ?
@@michaelmoore676 Sax. What else?
Jorge Calderòn on bass

That was fun! What a smoking band!
Had to revisit this video for the umpteenth time after hearing of Lindley's death. Farewell, you madman. Thanks for all the music.
Parallax, I thought I was done crying, but you just made me cry again. Gotta have to go listen to David playing Bon Ton Rouler on this same show in order to lively up myself again.😭🤧
Love ya, David! Claremont loves ya!
The great David Lindley RIP
RIP David....Jah has your sublime grooves now!
Ridiculously good!
Holy sh~t. This might be one of the most clever covers ever done.
RIP David Lindley ❤You will Be Missed
Uh, WOW! What an awesome version of this Warren Zevon classic!
I worked 3pm to 11pm when this show was on in the late 1980’s. I would set my VCR to record it every week. I remember this particular show well. RIP David Lindley.
Incredible. RIP to a legend.
Thank you. David Lindley. RIP
X-rated musicianship..excellent.
Beyond David’s eclectic collection of stringed things…his clothes closest must’ve been quite a sight to behold.
David did not know what a fashion crisis was....

My mother's first boyfriend and band mate. Tales to be told....RIP

Watched David with Wally Ingram in Basel & was hooked immediately.

Rest in peace David
The King of Polyster Jams with the Best in the Business, RIP George Duke!

Whatta band!
His touring band came to our little outpost once...best dance night ever!
I got to see him in a small venue. Was an amazing night.
RIP David Lindley and George Duke is on this one too? OMG!
❤️ ya, Mr. Dave
Hiram !! Miss that guy
The King Of Polyester & Teisco guitars... awesome, all-star band!!
Underrated musician and performer!
This is great!! Just been looking at olde Glasto vids, where I saw him play with Jackson Browne. Great upload!! 👍🏻👍🏻🤘✌️
Definitely a unique version. Fun and kool.
Very David Byrne-like. RIP
Tremendous. 👍🏻🏴
Don't get any better than that!!!
Brilliant 😁👏👍
RIP, David. What a talented cat
I don't remember Sunday Night Live, though!

@@nzdreams he played double bass so cello would be similar.
That is an all-star band. MONSTERS ALL.
That's a smokin' band.
RIP David
What a treasure that man was.
Mr. Dave is great, of course. Sunday Night or Night Music with David Sanborn and Jools Holland. Always an eclectic mix of some of the best, beautifully programmed and nothing like it before or since, sadly.
That’s the 8th dumble ever made😢 RIP Alex and David
what a groove
Love his solo stuff and his collaborations with Ry Cooder Jackson Browne etc great musician and guitarist
Fuck. Lindley was a master. Beautiful upbeat version of the Zevon classic.
Would only add...IS a master!
Very nice
RIP Mr. Lindley!
This is NOT Saturday Night Live it’s David Sandborn’s (Saxophone) Night Music. Sandborn played sax on Bowie’s Young Americans and was a frequent guest player with Paul Schaefer’s Letterman band.
Wow, that's fun 😊! Funny 🤣 too.
This is actually from a TV show called "Sunday Night" or later on, "Night Music".
I hate then original version of this song but love this! Lindley did an awesome job making this a different and all together better tune.
RIP
Strange to see David standing while playing. A legend.
The Zevon groove is cooler, but it's hard to dislike anything David Lindley does because he plays with such ease. The SNL house band doesn't hurt.
😬 The zevon version stinks.
Wow! just...WOW!
His Red Rock show opening for Jackson Browne years ago was great. Just in the hour-long sound check he did 6-7 different versions of Mercury Blues. The last time I saw him was in Boulder with Wally Ingram for the Twango Bango tour.
RIP Dave
DX-7, Steinberg bass, Hartke amp, Roland Jazz amp... yep, it was the 80s!
and the headless Steinberger bass of course :-)
Of course David went vintage with a 60s Teisco
@@janattaaya with a Dumble amp.
@@akbaranwari3001 When those were still affordable.
Oh no they never were 😁
😂 Hiram! So high, missing the first 2 backups, and being f’n awesome
great version
Brilliant.
I'm sure they were John Hiats backing band when I saw them at Dingwalls many moons ago
You can dance to this one!!!!
Inna reggae stylee....💖💚💛🖤
Unique take on this song
Greasiest take I've heard yet!
Goes down easy!
RIP David Sanborn 😢
Not everyone can pull off a Reggae version of Werewolves of London.
As they cycled through the individual musicians, I thought, "Damn, that guy is good... and damn, so is that guy... and that guy..."
£ove that blue Gi'Tar ...
would you believe i Got Paid to "accept" one .?. would you believe i still Hang On to it ‼️
George Duke did the impossible here: he made a DX-7 sound good!
Lindley..
If Talking Heads were cloned they might sound like this. All top-notch players!
that thumb over the neck...how do they do that so easily?
fucking great
Kinda ska meets Talking Heads version...Lindley just exotic...jeez that band is ridiculously talented group! Saisee Bullock etc etc all name guys plus DB
Nice
Go, Jorge!
