I honestly believe that Freddy died for good in Freddy vs Jason. The last blink was Englund’s farewell to the character and to the audience. He even said in an interview that that was Freddy’s last action.
Robert Englund often tends to explain various things in the films, which in a way is cool and shows his interest in the character. But in reality, it has been said several times that it was just to make the outcome of the fight less clear.

I don't think that he did because he never truly "dies". Think of him as kind of like a Greek god, rather than dying, his presence fades but he lingers.
As long as it is thought about it never goes away.

In the comic book freddy vs Jason vs ash. It takes place after 5 years after the movie. It shows what happens to Lori and will. It also brings back former characters from the series. It's actually a really good read.
It's a real shame we lost Wes Craven. His creativity will be missed.

I'll never forget being 12 years old and watching my Freddy's Revenge VHS tape in the living room one Saturday evening. My dad had wandered in about half way through and sat down on a recliner.
The pool party scene comes on, there's a shot in that scene with a wagon full of beers and they start popping and exploding on their own.
My father (who was known as being a man of few words) pipes up with a passion in his voice and says "No Freddy, not the beer!".

Idk the whole segment on Jesse was theory based on speculation. Despite many of the individuals involved later coming out as gay at the time they have gone on record as having stated that gay subtext was unintentional. That includes the script writer (who came out as gay) as well as Jesse's actor (who also came out as gay).... though to be fair they have stated they still took pride in their work and liked that people saw stuff they hadn't.

Honestly, Freddy's rules changing from movie to movie makes sense, as he's a local legend powered by the fear of his victims and thus, can only do what they BELIEVE he can do. For example, Nancy believed he could be pulled into the real world, so he could be. He was able to enter the real world through Jesse because his understanding was formed by Nancy's diary, etc.

Dreams change as we experience more of the world
Good theory, much like how he tailors the dreams, the dreams are just variations he made based on his victim’s worldviews and understandings. Although some inconsistencies are definitely bad writing. Although if you write those more fantasy based stories it’s hard to keep track of the rules.
That’s a neat theory but ultimately that can’t solely be the case because even before haunting his teenage victims in their dreams in the very first nightmare movie freddy was making his way back to life through dreams to a certain degree through the dreamscape if you want to call it that. So he could start his ultimate revenge killing spree rampage on the first group of children of elm street such as Nancy, Glen, Tina and rod. And then keep in mind in nightmare on elm street part 3 the Dream Warriors it was revealed to us that the elm street children in general had no recollection of Freddy and who he was since he had been killed so many years ago, to the point where the once infamous serial killer wasn’t even mentioned or brought up towards them at all in the slightest, so if that was the case then what fear was Freddy feeding off of then if they didn’t know him at all to be begin with. See My view point is that Freddy can logically haunt peoples Dreams as long as the Dream demons exist and if humanity’s act of dreaming is still in motion Freddy will always be able to kill his victims “with belief or even without it as well”…

In 84, my mom rented me a Star Trek film, but Nightmare on Elm Street was in the box. Being a typical boomer mom, she put it in the VCR, and watched it with me, saying it was the first film to really scare her in years. She loved it. It was a lucky thing. That film for me is very nearly perfect.

It’s nice to see all of this laid out in order because his backstory seems so complicated, and his soul is doomed right from the get-go. Son of a nun who was raped, becomes a murderous father, the dream people, etc. He had no chance of NOT being evil.
I always got the impression he was gonna be evil regardless of his upbringing.
No matter how cheesy the movies get, I love all of them and Robert Englund just brings such a great performance to each movie. Freddy will always be my favorite horror movie villain.

If you were a kid when they were in theaters they were everything BUT corny. I had night terrors.
@Thirdeye387 In the late 80s early 90s. My dad volunteered for an organization that built a haunted house every Halloween. So as a small child I'd go with him in the evening when they were building it. One year they built a boiler room and themed it with Freddy. That year a window was busted in the building they were renting and the glass guy couldn't make it until the next day. So my Dad and I brought sleeping bags to spend the night inside the haunted house. I was about eight years old. The only bathroom was located at the back of the building. Which required you to walk through the boiler room. Even knowing it was all fake it was STILL creepy AF to walk back there by myself. With a flashlight to use the restroom.

I was born on friday the 13th, live on elm st, and there is a guy named freddy who lives across the street. I have always found that pretty cool.
Taking 90 minutes to explain Krueger is why I own the box set of all Nightmare films. He has an immense amount of depth for a horror villain and it’s definitely what makes him stand out among them. Usually I like simple rules but dreams are the furthest thing from simple so it makes sense his rules are confusing

To me these movies scream Nostalgia reminds me of what it was like to be a kid and be afraid of the cheesiest things. Took me a while but I found a VHS set complete obviously it's missing more modern ones like Jason versus Freddy and so on but still one of my favorite movie sets. I think watching them on a VHS gives it this this creepy vintage look that I don't know how to explain but it's so enjoyable
He was a baby toucher who was evil enough to get noticed by a demon. Not a lot of depth there.

The False Awakening Loop segment of the video sent chills down my spine. When I was younger, I had this false awakening 3 times and I remember spending the rest of the day paranoid that everything wasn’t real. That I would wake up again at any moment
I sometimes woke up from dreams that seemed real because I’d been spooked awake, but I knew I was at home in my bed with my dogs immediately because I’d say something immediately after I’d wake up from that dream.

i’ve had that happen before and it’s so jarring. i also have realistic dreams of mundane things like doing the dishes. i have to ask my family if something was real sometimes

I still feel that Freddy's "-this... is God" line is severely underrated. It's an amazingly improvised line that not only mocks Tina's plea, but it also hints to Freddy's god complex with his powers. He remains convinced he's invincible even when Nancy figures out how to defeat him. Freddy has been surprised and injured throughout the series, but he still trys to come out on top.
I thought it meant he was saying (literally) his face if HE himself is god.Or was telling Tina god is evil or his burned face represented what is or how he felt about GOD

It's funny how between movies, so many don't know who he is. So much for people remembering.
There is a lot of creepiness in there but the one that really gets me is Wes Craven's script predicting the conversation ahead.
It's not actually supposed to be Freddy in NN though, it's some kind of demon masquerading as him because of Heather Langerkamp's fears. Good film though, especially after Freddy's Dead!
The ping ball part in Freddy vs Jason is one that will forever be burned in my mind. Growing up, was never into horror. So when anyone is watching something horror related, I would leave to another room. But I remember walking out one day to my family watching Freddy vs Jason and saw that Air Yeet scene. I was surprised to how I thought it was funny and not scary. It became my first horror movie I watched, and it all changed from there. Although not praised by critics, it still holds a special place in my heart.

As someone who grew up in a abusive home (For Context not Sexual Abuse but physically, psychology, and emotional). I can say from that personal experience that both me and my brother took pride and even joy in the fact we could take the physical pain.
We took a weapon away from our abuser and when you have little control and few victories that's a big thing.
@@E2B487 As a kid I was full of rage but I wasn't sociopathic so I didn't take my rage out on other kids or animals. I actually developed intense empathy for people and animals who were being mistreated. But I had to get rid of the rage so I used self harmed as a outlet in my early teen this is how I accidently built up a pain tolerance. Once I did I took joy in knowing I took something from my abuser. I moved out when I was 18 my step father who was my abuser died 16 years ago.
I've dealt with my demons and I have never even been in a physical fight in my life with anyone outside of my step father who I knocked on his ass when I was about 15 and that ended him hitting me. I don't have a violent temper, I don't believe in crying of spilled milk, & I believe in timeouts if small fights start to escalate and comeback with clearer and cooler heads. Given my upbringing I think I'm a pretty well adjusted person.
You know what's even better than taking that weapon away? Turning it on the abuser to see if he/she can handle what they dish out. 😈

i've had the luck to meet Robert Englund a couple of years ago and He autographed my dvd movie collection of nightmare on Elm street case, very humble guy. when i told him that i saw the first NOES movie when i was 10 (1991) He was impressed and said : did you parents let you watch my movies at that age? and then He just Laughed. thank you for another fantastic video man !!
I always wondered how Freddy worked and his history, thanks so much for covering it. When I have bad dreams I get mad and can dream myself as in control of the dream and defeat the nightmare. I had a lot of nightmares as a kid, it's a handy coping skill.
Thank you for this video! People have criticized the remake for "making" freddy a child molester and i try to tell them he's always been a child molester, it just wasn't as overt in the original series.

Anyways, I think you're totally correct that the original vision of Wes Craven, was of the taker of innocence in both capacities...he r@%$d & killed the kids. The problem is that the horrendous remake, reduced him to a simple chester molester. He had NEVER EVEN taken a life b4 the parents burned him. This really weakened the mythos in my view. Fred Krueger never spilled actual innocent blood until post mortem. Also it was a CGI mess that couldn't hold a candle to the original.
Yes! I was just talking about Freddy to my daughter last week or so and I told HER he was a child molester. I remember catching that impression from the first movie, and I watched that as a kid in the 80’s.
The original Is superior, but I liked the remake with Earl Haley: It was very dark, dramatic, scary, freaking and mysterious. Id say that It made some Pieces and scenes even better than the First installment. Last, many years ago, I need to tell I had a dream (or a Nightmare) where I was chased by Freddy, and atmosphere location and events looked like the last movie.
This movie loses interest and fashion at the last 30 minutes, becoming predictable, boring, doped with special effect, too much long and a bit pathetic (anyway much less pathetic than the Nightmare 2s ending)

Did you know Jackie Earl Haley auditioned with Johnny Depp for the original movie? As we know, Johnny Depp got cast, but Earl Haley di not, but then went on to play freddy in the remake 20 years later.
My absolute favorite horror series from my childhood. Robert Englund was brilliant in bringing smart humor to the role. I don’t think anyone can match him in being almost likable as Freddy.
Not sure if it was pointed out in the comments but at 56:58 that is not just some random PSA host but Johnny Depp. Which for it being the “Final Nightmare” was a nice nod to the first movie.

You’re the first person I have actually heard talk about hypnagogic hallucinations. As someone who suffers from them myself (mainly if I’m in a stressful situation combined with sleep deprivation) I feel heard, seen and understood 😂
For me they are auditory, so I just kinda start hearing familiar voices having normal-ass conversations, but as soon as I try to listen in, I’m too awake so they fade away. 😔
Wow! I didn't know that it had an actual name. My doctors just called them auditory hallucinations. It's cool to know that other people exist who can understand that we don't just hear voices talking to us directly. It's almost like listening in on a parallel dimension or something.
@@fjolliff6308 yeah, there's Hypnagogic and hypnopompic hallucinations, one happens as you're falling asleep, and the other as you're waking up, they can be auditory or visual if I recall correctly, I've suffered from both types for years, and the auditory ones are startling, but the visual ones are utterly terrifying depending on what you're seeing, which usually for me, is a person standing stalk still, or something equally frightening, such as the time I saw a swarm of spiders covering my wall, makes sleeping so freaking difficult xD
I get those too! Crazy to know I'm not alone. I get both auditory and visual hallucinations.

I always interpret the ending of FvJ to be both of them walking out of an extinguished lake of fire in hell or purgatory of some sort. Meaning they both died in the real world. Which answers why Freddy is able to wink whilst decapitated. And because it’s technically the last part of Freddy Krueger’s timeline, it gives me a better feeling of satisfaction to see Jason walking him back into the afterlife after their big showdown. Obviously, Jason comes back at some point because Jason X is the final part of Jason’s timeline, but for me this is Freddy’s official ending. For him to finally die doesn’t let all the fighting that Nancy, Alice, etc. be for nothing. They all sort of get to live vicariously through Laurie in that moment and they all win.
Plus I think that all horror franchises deserve definitive endings at some point, and to me, this is the most definitive and satisfying interpretation of the ending of FvJ.
I like this interpretation. I always have a soft spot for Jason he sort of deserved his peace at the end. Although he did go to space but I guess the logic and continuity constantly get thrown out of the window in his franchise.

There was an alternate ending that didn't take shape due to the licensing not panning out. In the scene Freddy and Jason continued their fight in Hell, when chains fly out and pin them down. Then Pinhead appears and says something to the effect of "Gentlemen, what seems to be the problem?"

Glad you talked about New Nightmare. Probably my favorite. It's not really the Freddy character or same continuity as the rest of the films but always stood out to me as the scarier of the movies as a kid. Not because it was suppose to be in our reality but because Freddy felt more terrifying. He felt a lot less human.
Funny story. I actually wrote a sequal to Freddy vs. Jason, where Michael and Jamie Lloyd got involved. Freddy came back to life when Jamie touched Freddy’s head, transferring the evil that Michael put in her at the end of H4 into Freddy. (No, it's not related to Thorn.) I thought it was a creative way of bringing back Freddy Krueger after Jason decapitated him.
I actually got to meet Robert Englund once at the only comic con I ever went to. Sadly I have long lost the picture with his autograph, but it was still really cool to say hi and get a picture. ^^

There is only one Freddy Krueger and it's Robert Englund. There is certain actors that just embody their characters and robert is Freddy his voice is one of a kind
Hailey did a great job and it’s sad that the reboot didn’t get sequels. I do feel like they should have leaned on the child slasher trope more than the molester route. But hailey was an excellent successor in the role. It’s the most seriously toned nightmare film since the Dream Warriors.

Don’t get me wrong I love the Elm Street/Freddie films. However, having seen the movies out of order and spaced out made them feel silly and disconnected franchise cash grabs BUT hearing the backstory and connections in order made me appreciate the films and its mythology on a whole new level! I love the cast picture in the New Nightmare segment. I think it is cool Heather and Robert have stayed pretty tight all these years. Also New Nightmare is super underrated because I dont think people really knew what to make of meta-horror back then.

Yeah me too I thought Nightmare 1 is the very first killing spree as Freddy in that film seems in a 'figuring out' phase where he is discovering his powers and see what's the best approach to torment the kids. He definitely have encountered difficulties with Nancy proving to be a worthy foe and I'd say he even struggled with Tina at first. He became a lot more competent and powerful in 3 and 4 and 5 is where he is having his last stand with Alice's baby. As for the previous victims they were only seen from Freddy's Dead which you really can take the good bits as canon and discard the rest imo...
The line about "six years ago" was from Dream Warriors, she was referring to the first movie. If you mean the in-memorium wall that listed causalities in 1975, 7 years after they torched Freddy and 11 years before the first movie, there's nothing that specifically says it happened in their sleep, they could just be regular accidents and health problems and stuff. Zac does mention SUNDS, but he's making assumptions not backed by the content of the movie.

As a little kid I was so scared of Freddy and the whole Nightmare universe. Later on it didn’t take to be a brain surgeon to find out that all my troubled/broken home childhood with a terrible father figure was reacting to these flicks and Frederick as the violent father. Anyway, this is an excellent work and very thoroughly put together history of the nightmare realm. Must have taken a long time to make this video! Congratulations on that, keep up the great job!!!

Alice Johnson is one underrated final girl just like the two movies she is in (Nightmare 4 and 5). She is the one true survivor that lived through two movies. Being the Dream Master and the mother of the Dream Child, you could even say she is the definitive final girl of this franchise. I love the Christian and devil symbolisms in the Nightmare films it really adds a mythological depth to the character and the lore. Freddy is definitely not the only dream demon in history. It’s creepy to think there might be many previous dream demons throughout history.
Not really. Alice was kept alive by Freddy in both movies for more victims in Part 4 and to grow via her unborn child in part 5. I mean in part 5 she was weirdly alive after Freddy ripping out of her at the end. Different rules kept her alive. She really wasn't stalked the same way as the other kids.
@@bodystorm I disagree. Alice was one of the strongest of them all. She protected her mind so completely - without Hypnocil - that it was closed to Freddy, who still needed her. He had killed all of the Elm Street children and it was only through Alice that he could continue. He was done. He only managed to bring himself back through co-opting the dreams of a fetus. Alice literally pulled herself apart to be rid of him once and for all. I hate how they retconned that in 6. Alice won.

Anyway, i dont see why freddy could be defeated by looking in the mirror, when he often used mirrors to hunt (not as his tongue, but often). Its more likely that he cheated to steal her child Later.

20:39 I think Nancy was actually still dreaming when she thought she'd pulled Freddy into the real world. That explains things like Marge's body sinking into the bed and Nancy getting trapped in the car at the end.
Either that, or it was the mom dreaming and her nightmare is that Freddy got her daughter but he ended up getting her. Because it is weird how Freddy definitely had them at the end, yet she pops back up in 3. So either Nancy was dreaming, the mom was, or they just retconned it in order to bring Nancy back. Very confusing third act concerning all that

Freddy has always been the scariest horror character because as a kid I suffered from night terrors. Even after I got over them mostly I still suffered from very vivid and graphic nightmares with the worst part being if I woke up and went back to bed I would actually pick the dream back up. Apparently this is rare but my mom has the same thing. And yes I did have a nightmare with Freddy once after watching Freddy vs Jason. He was chasing me and I woke up as he was about to kill me, but I went back to sleep and I was back in the dream with him and he said “welcome back”. On the plus side this works for good dreams as well.

I like Freddy becasue he's got personality, the same with Pinhead and Chucky. Jason, Michael, and Leatherface are bland, faceless, nothings, they may as well be Bruce from Jaws or the truck from Duel (not the truck from Jeepers Creepers, the creeper did have a bit of personality). This is why some movies can be rebooted since the actor is behind a mask, while others don't work without the original actor.

I love how in part 5, the cemetery shot, all of Freddy's victims are buried next to one another..like the families thought it was a good idea. Lol.
I mean, isn't that what they'd do in a real small town cemetery when so many people died unexpectedly in a short time frame? If the families didn't have pre-bought plots, and the victims are kids so that is unlikely, the cemetery would just bury them all in a new row.

Some have pre bought plots for their entire family including grandchildren to ensure they are all buried together. Small town folks tend to think these through generations into the future. Some would wind up in the manner you spoke of but ALL of them?😂

They were maybe an average sized suburb. Still, I'm sure the plot placement was just for the audience tho lol.

EXCELLENT video! Been waiting for something like this, about my favorite horror series, for decades. Was surprised that you didn’t say anything about Johnny Depp being the actor in the DARE commercial, In Freddy’s Dead. That was an awesome call-back easter egg to the first movie!

Speaking of changing rules, in France, we have a joke that goes, 'Tait-toi, c'est magique' ('Shut up, it's magical'). Personally, I think the 80s slashers (which I adore) didn't necessarily aim to be 'very' coherent. They were mainly designed for fun. It's quite evident in the documentary 'Never Sleep Again.

for some reason the stretching the chalk board was such a cool effect for me as a kid. I knew even back then that it was just a practical effect but the thought of stretching and shaping things in a waking dream seem so cool.

These are my favorite franchises! I don't usually like sequels, but my favorite is the dream child. I was born in '84, so these movies were a huge part of my childhood. Thank you for breaking them down for everyone. If you can still find the Freddy boxset, it has a dvd explaining a lot. It also includes a book sharing how Wes Craven based Freddy off of a real person from his childhood. It's a really cool set.

hypnogogic and hypnopompic (gogic falling asleep, pompic waking up) honestly suck, and can absolutely used in horror in amazing ways, in my experience its like dipping into another reality for a time, knowing your stuck, I've delt with both for years and the impending sense of dread always scares me

The true horror is 4,5 and 6 even being released at all. Even Robert Englund couldn’t save those turkeys imo. Excellent video btw.
