Just used the information I learned from you and correctly weighed and spread for my first time ever with little to nothing left in the hopper. Thank you for being the best source of lawn care I can find with saint Augustine.
I don't do well with math, so when I followed these steps I was amazed to find that my math was (virtually) perfect. With my 8,066 sq ft yard (give or take 10') I was left with just a few lbs of fert from a 40lbs bag (treats 10,000 sq ft). This is my first attempt at restoring my lawn so I'll be watching more vids as I progress, so wish me luck.
I am a new sub, and boy I am glad I found you. Thank you so much for sharing your expert knowledge. I recently lost my job, so we are going to have to halt our lawn service for a while. In years past I didn't have the motivation to arm myself with solid lawn care skills. So it was easy to let someone else do it for me. I like my St Augustine lawn. And you are a very valuable source of information on how to "dominate" in my own hood. Thanks!
Your videos are amazing! My awesome lawn care company decided I needed "green" and "yellow" strips in my yard. So your videos I am firing them and taking control of my lawn to dominate my neighbors!
I only used Bonus S once on my St Augustine. It controlled bull thistles, but it caused my St Augustine to turn yellowish. It stressed the heck out of it so now i pull weeds by hand. 😎
St. Augustinegrass performs best when fertilized with 2 to 4 pounds of nitrogen (N) per 1,000 square feet per year depending on location, health of lawn, soil type, and many other factors. In spring, apply ½ to 1 pound of N per 1,000 square feet several weeks after the last expected frost. I recommend to submitting a soil sample to determine nutrient and or lime requirements. Keep up the great work buddy :-)
I think I'm going to have to give this a shot. I was paying a local company to fertilize, but while the weeds are mostly gone, the grass isn't as green as I expected. time to "throw er' down."
LCN, first, thanks for all the great tips and videos! Started watching your stuff and it greatly helped early spring up here in Michigan to get the lawn bad into shape. First year throwing down Milorganite with granulated lime, Scott's fertilizer for the weed & feed and it starting to show results. Started working the lawn late March and hopefully we'll dominate the neighborhood... thanks, enjoying your vids.
hey bro i work for alldredge gardens in midland tx, i apply herbicides and fertilizer and at my boss's house i use revive, texas compost, and soil activator all micro nutrients that will help balance out water ph and its mostly organic
Alan how often do you put down the Milo, I'm really struggling to get my grass where I want it. We moved into our new home 6 months ago and the landscapers did a terrible job with the sod. We have clay soil and they did no soil preparation. anyway love the channel I learn stuff from you everyday
Bonus S was the first fertilizer I ever used. Loved the quick green up( micro granular). Did not like the longevity of it though. You are backing it up with Milwaukee-ite though so that will kick in when the scotts fails. Since I have worked my way up the fertilizer chain my favorite is now Lesco 24-0-11(80% SRN) backed up with some Bio-solids (6-3-0). Stays green the whole summer with one application. About 3 months after this application I put down Moisture Manager to hold onto what nature gives us plus some K-Flow(0-0-25). Micronutrients every 2 months the whole year round. Never thought about doing a lawn dance. If I have any left over, I set my spreader to a lower number and lightly go over the front till I am out. I have done some funny cuts though. I cut the whole lawn and then lowered my deck 2 inches and cut every other row in both directions(checkerboard). Leaves you with raised cubes
As soon as I saw the Scott's, I was like WTF, Hayne sold out to the man! Then without fail, the flashing "NOT sponsored by Scotts!" Love it, great video!
Allen stop worrying about the stupid people that keep complaining about some of your videos. I found your channel because I needed tips and tricks and I stayed because I am a nut like you, and I love all of the content.
Thanks to this channel I don't believe I will be able to move tomorrow. It's Easter, 45,000 sq ft, 18 bags of milo, my phone said 18,878 steps completed.
Great video. I'm new to all this taken care of the yard stuff, my neighbor across the street is dominating my yard with his. So I went and bought some kind of grass grow stuff and I don't have a spreader thing, well I just did it by hand like throwing bird seed and man wow does my grass look like shit now. Trying to learn so I can get my yard looking better but take it from me guys, DON'T spread fertilizer by hand lol.
Hey, just wondering why you haven't made some lines inside your fert hopper. Weigh and load 2 pounds or 5 pounds etc. and make yourself a mark where it sits. That would help you even further with keeping your application rate correct. i'll need a broadcast spreader later this year when I move and think i'll try this out.
Wasn't too long and I wasn't bored! I like the 15-20 minute vids, I seem to digest the info a little better. I do the circle dance with the double fast walk Lol. I missed the pre emergent window and bought some Spectracide weed control and can't get it down with rain every other day GRRRR! Dandelions are crazy this year
Haha yes the circle dance! Every time! I have been using a drop spreader for a while since I got it for $4 or something at goodwill a few years ago. A bit tricky to get an even app down each time and it takes a lot of practice. Probably keep it for doing trim and borders and pick up a cheap broadcast spreader for the rest of the lawn. Drop spreaders take so much time.
hey great videos and tips thanks a lot. I have a question. I have a property thats has fescue but Bermuda is trying to take over what can I do to get rid of the Bermuda? TIA.
I spilled fert at 23% nitrogen non-organic in a spot because my spreader malfunctioned and it burned the shit and kill it that spot in 3 days it was dirt spot I was stunned since we don't have milo in Wyoming yet unless I special order which I did not have the time to do I will order for the forth never using non organic again this is the first year of lawn practice since we relandscaped next early spring I'm putting down weed and feed and all organic fert your yard is good I'm dominating my neighborhood thanks to your informational videos
I am very new to this. I have St Augustine grass and I just applied fertilizer for the first time. I used the Turf Builder Feed and Weed. My goal was twofold: make my grass greener, and prevent weeds from growing. My grass has not turned any greener, and the fertilizer has caused weeds to grow all over my grass. I never had weed problems. I only wanted to prevent it and now I rather have it. Any recommendations on how to control the weed, and also make the Augustine grass greener?
Alan, I live in North Carolina and I have a Tall Fescue Lawn. My mow height i around 3.5 to 4 inches high. Here's my problem...in some areas of my lawn the grass lays flat like it's just too tall. What should I do in order to dominate as I need every leaf blade to stand TALL!!!
Hey LCN. Great channel! I am in central Texas. I have Bermuda and I did a Soil Savy sample and got my results. I was suggested to put down 16-16-16 synthetic @ 4.75lb/1000 sqft or organic 5-5-5 @ 15lb / 1000 sqft. My problem is I cannot find the 5-5-5 and only two brands that make the 16-16-16. I went with H&J 16-16-16 and I have a broadcast scotts deluxe with edge guard. The bag said 8lb /1000sqft so I set my settings to 7 on the spreader. I just realized I missed the recommended application of 4.75 set by soil savy. I know I put to much down, but did I put to much? I have my walk speed set at putting some bum bum in it. I would like to go with a fertilizer that is not so specialized and easy to find (Home Depot). Any recommendations? I also put some Gypsum down a week prior recommended by Soil Savy. Grass is slowly greening up. I am just wondering if I am supposed to be green already or be patient. Thanks for your help.
I'm in the Midwest and Buffalo grass is being installed in lots of places. Should I use your hybrid organic plan on buffalo? What changes would you make?
I have about 5,000 square feet of hybrid bermuda sod in my back yard that really wasn't taken care of by the previous owner of the house. It's been largely taken over by dollar weed and a few other ugly weeds. Should I mow that part pretty short while throwing down N right now along with regular watering to get rid of most of the weeds? I'd really like to get that bermuda back to as pure as possible because where it hasn't been taken over yet, it's like walking on carpet barefooted.
Im in Illinois and I worked for a Turf care company and we had restrictions on how far away we could fert near water. Its been a while but I think our laws stated 20ft away from water sources. Whats your Regulations? Im just curious. How far away do you recommend?
As a new homeowner, you are VERY helpful. Confusing as well :-D Seriously, thats why I subscribed to you early last year when I lived in NYC. You give some good assed advice!
great stuff as always. No one has covered how to weigh your fertilizer that I could find, so good to see you go over that part. Seems obvious but it helps!
My 10 year old who just started cutting the lawn this year quoted you! I asked what are we going to get done this weekend? His response.... "Seed is cheap. Throw 'er down!"
Only seeing old videos but ill throw the question out and see if I get a bite. Construction crew thre out some sod after they finished new drainage in the area. My question is all the videos I have seen say do not do anything for 6-8 weeks. However the videos I have seen have also been 4 or 5 years old. Would something like rgs be good for sod to help with the shock of beeing torn out of the ground to then help stimulate new root growth for the yard it has been put in. Or is it still just a leave it be other than water and then 6-8 weeks start hitting her with all the goodies.
I have loads of brown patches and purchase a fertilizer 29 0 4. My question is can I mix it in the spreader with sun and shade grass seeds. I'm from Long Island . you have a great looking lawn.
hey! Can you please help me? I am wondering what product I should use for an extremely bad dandilion infestation and those weird one blade grasses like yellow nutsedge. I have Kentucky bluegrass.
I live in AZ and moved into my home last spring. Missed the good time to seed and my backyard is dry dirt and patchy. I want to install sprinklers and put down seed but don't know when and what would be best to use. Any tips?
Hi guys just closed on my house in December so fairly new to lawn care , long story short I applied scotts weed and feed last week but really want to try the organic product that's being used in this video how soon can I install it / how long do I have to wait 😩
This guy cooks up videos that are accurate , honest , informative and very entertaining. Why HGTV or some other cable show hasn't hired him is beyond me. Your the " Iron Chef" of lawn care Mr. Hane so , Rock on sir, Rock on !
Man, I saw this reply and Tiny Dancer wouldn't come to mind. Instead, I kept hearing Rocketman and had to correct it by pulling up the video for Tiny Dancer.
So I signed up for TruGreen because I just don't have time. But is there something I can do to boost it? I'm on Georgia with Bermuda. This is yea #2 of a new lawn. It was sodded but much of it died as it wasn't watered before we bought in July 2016.
My builder recommended Bonus S Southern Weed and Feed for my Bermuda hybrid lawn! No wonder it is not coming in as it should. Could Milorganite save my lawn?
Allan, I need to buy fertlizer now and I'm confused. Step 1 of your programs states that you should use a starter fertilizer. Does this still apply or should I use the Milorganite?. Thanks.
LCN, I 'm confused. Your lawn treatment program step 1 states that the first application should be a starter fertilizer. Does this still apply or should I go straight to Milorganite? Thanks.
As far as watering, and I know you've covered it in a previous video, here goes...I have a rather small front yard, easy and low maintenance, that's ALWAYS green. My backyard is quite a bit larger, gets more water than the front, but it seems to brown and wilt quicker than the front. Do I need to water longer and less frequently or longer and on the same frequency? Thanks LCN👍
Hey LCN big fan here. Two items of advice. Don't make me look at Cenk. But more importantly, don't apologize for explaining things. I came here to learn. Entertainment is fine, but for me the learning is the draw.
also i have a quick question i live just above naperville and i have a tall fescue yard but i have this white dead grass spots that are growing back. is that bermuda?
Quick question for Weed n Feed, do you apply when lawn is a bit wet, let the product sit for 24-48 hours and water it in or that doesn’t really matter?
Could you make a video about fungus control in St. Augustine lawns? I recently noticed gray leaf spots and brown patches despite adequate, but not too much irrigation. I've read that it may be the cause of increased nitrogen in soil levels. Can you recommend certain fungicides to deal with the issue? The only suggestions I've come across have been reviews from individual products like Bayer Fungus Control/Scotts Lawn Fungus Control/AG Liquid Copper. Thanks!
I love your channel, subscribed a while nack. Buttttttt I think now you are understanding that Southern lawns are harder to maintain then Northern. Keep up the good work. South Texas out.
Great video for you Southerners, but what about the Midwest folks? Can't find some of the crabgrass control or fertilizer that you recommend around here. Thinking of using Fertilome crabgrass control with fertilizer, then using weed control mix to kill all remaining weeds in my yard. Hopefully this is LCN approved
this video was all about "how to" not really "what to" so it should appeal to everyone. Laying fert on the lawn is the same and knowing how to calculate fert rates is a skill that should be practiced.
Great Video, yes I do that dance too. Reaching out from the midwest. Bluegrass sod laid last year, bad advise from irrigation company and have some kill from rust. This spring I overseeded and just put down 32-0-8 Lesco fert with Lesco Spread.... Okay to put down some Milo and how much/setting for 14000 square feet? Keep up the great work!
LCN,I have a 4,000 sq. ft. lawn and buy the 5,000 sq. ft. bags of fert. Is it ok to use the whole bag (25% more) over the entire lawn or save the rest?I'm thinking you might say "thrower down!"
Hey man, just came across your video! Very good info but I have a question. Someone locally in SE Texas suggested that I use a Nitro-Phos 19-4-10 Super Turf Fertilizer on my St. Augustine grass. What are your thoughts on this? My sod was put down approximately 2 yrs ago so I'm trying to thicken it up.
LCN, thanks for all the videos! Been following you for about a month and since then, added sprinklers, followed you steps and started with some weed & feed (not the best, I know) so that I can lay something down for weeds and then 3 weeks later I threw down some milorganite, a bit of lime, top soil and seeded this past weekend... Hoping all comes in as planned. QUESTION: I am noticing some bugs (ticks and grubs) and some scary looking spiders... I ended up getting the Bayer insecticide concentrate and wanted to know when would be a safe time to spray the newly seeded yard with this stuff? Would be cool to see a vid on this! Thanks for the many vids and tips!!!
Love your videos and instruction. I remember you saying in one of the videos not to use "weed & feed" so, I stopped using it. I started using the milorganite and my lawn is thicker than ever. However, I have some area where i have some purple color 'flowers' (I believe they are some sort of weed) as well as dandelions. What should I use to get rid of that and have it replaced with all grass? Thanx Craig in NJ
Big thumbs up for the "Circle Dance." We all do it!
Now its public! Everyone will know what we're doing while we're out there dancing!
OMG... me too! Everytime!
I never knew what it was called, all I knew was it had to be done to complete the task at hand! 🖐🏼😁
Haha I do it!
LOL, this is awesome. Circle Dance Crew!

LCN AND LGR. My two favorites on the UA-cams.
As soon as I saw the Scott's, I was like WTF, Hayne sold out to the man! Then without fail, the flashing "NOT sponsored by Scotts!" Love it, great video!
sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do and that product was what I needed for sure.

What part of WY you live at? What spreader did malfunction? I am about to fertilize my new lawn. I am in Cheyenne
I put down essentially the same thing last weekend (finally no more snow!) and ended with the "circle dance!"
I am very new to this. I have St Augustine grass and I just applied fertilizer for the first time. I used the Turf Builder Feed and Weed. Is it bad I have been waiting all week for this??
Matthew Green me too! I also want a house tour lol
Matthew Green
Try all winter.
Matthew Green alongside with the playoffs? no lol I been waiting too
Yes. Yes, it is.

haha please video tape when the spray company tries to pitch you their services!
Those Individuals are always "inspecting" my lawn and recommending a 6 step program Plus killing fungus plus killing all the bugs. 8 aps.
lol YES!

great stuff as always. No one has covered how to weigh your fertilizer that I could find, so good to see you go over that part. Seems obvious but it helps!
Scotts Bonus S use to work fine. This year, it did nothing to the dollar weeds. I applied the the same way as every other year.
Just installed Empire Zyosia....how long do I wait to fertilize it and what do you recommend as the first application??
80 degrees in Chicago! Watching this in my lawn chair! #Priorities
Brian Sierzega
Same here in lower eastern Michigan. Crazy stuff. Happy Easter
been following you since 2014 and I can honestly state that I definitely do the circle dance! Throw Er Down!
My 10 year old who just started cutting the lawn this year quoted you! I asked what are we going to get done this weekend? His response.... "Seed is cheap. Throw 'er down!"
Thank you Lawn Care Nut my lawn bounce back after using the fertilizer need a little bit more help on spots that not come in

mrmatalino What anout " Domination"?
My builder recommended Bonus S Southern Weed and Feed for my Bermuda hybrid lawn! No wonder it is not coming in as it should. Could Milorganite save my lawn?
Allan, I need to buy fertlizer now and I'm confused. Step 1 of your programs states that you should use a starter fertilizer. Does this still apply or should I use the Milorganite?. Thanks.
"Straight domination line..." - love it
LCN, I 'm confused. Your lawn treatment program step 1 states that the first application should be a starter fertilizer. Does this still apply or should I go straight to Milorganite? Thanks.
"Heck no. I'm going to throw her down on the Domination Line boys." LOL, too awesome!
Domination line!!! Circle dance, so funny we all do it😃🤓
My husband and I are new homeowners. How often do you fertilize your grass?
Lol. I thought I was the only one that did the circle dance. Big thumbs up!!!!
it's definitely a thing :)
Great. All these years, and I've been fertilizing wrong. Thanks for the info.

I don't like Cenk either.
also i have a quick question i live just above naperville and i have a tall fescue yard but i have this white dead grass spots that are growing back. is that bermuda?
Quick question for Weed n Feed, do you apply when lawn is a bit wet, let the product sit for 24-48 hours and water it in or that doesn’t really matter?
Love the LCN sign hanging during the fert drop - but perhaps you SHOULD spring for a display easel ?
good idea!
Thanks!
Literally I do the EXACT same circle dance. That's halarious. Keep up the good content man look forward to the next one.
How do i find out what kind of grass i have?I live in Pompano Beach.
what is your favorite cool season grass seed for filling in thin spots
we need help ft myers we have water restrictions twice a week. My lawn looks bad any tip?
Nice Dance Al!!! Good video!! Hope you have a great holiday weekend.
I love your channel, subscribed a while nack. Buttttttt I think now you are understanding that Southern lawns are harder to maintain then Northern. Keep up the good work. South Texas out.
ah man I check my youtube everyday in hopes to watch another great video. you rock mate. keep it going all the way from New Zealand
Great video. One question, how long should I wait to water the lawn after applying the fertilizer? I live up north in Canada.
The new place looks great LCN. Thanks for the content , keep er coming !
This was a big help in learning to improve my lawn
Alan out dominating as per usual
Man you really get into lawn fertilizer..good vid
My sod was put down approximately 2 yrs ago so I'm trying to thicken it up.
circle dance guy here......throw 'er down
We don't get Milo up here in Canada LCN. What's a good alternative?
If I already use TrueGreen, is there any point in me adding Milorganite to the lawn, or no?
lmao at the end..the circle dance..I do it all the time!
When you say to throw back to the wheel lines, are you throwing back to the far line or the close line?
I can not tell a lie,yes I do the circle dance too,you got me,thanks again for the video, what a nut!!
Hi Allen I love your videos, I have a question I live in ny and I just scarify my lawn should I overseed. Thanks
how long does the milo take before its fully absorbed into the lawn or untill it starts to take effect.
I have a drop spreader but I too do the circle dance . Next time I do it I'm going to think of you 👨🏽💻
Question; do the “pros” aka Tru green apply the app by weight according to square feet?
Love your videos and instruction. I remember you saying in one of the videos not to use "weed & feed" so, I stopped using it. I started using the milorganite and my lawn is thicker than ever. However, I have some area where i have some purple color 'flowers' (I believe they are some sort of weed) as well as dandelions. What should I use to get rid of that and have it replaced with all grass?
Thanx
Craig in NJ
LCN, at some point will you feel the need to aerate your lawn? Can't wait for next week, I can imagine some thick green edging and mowing going on...
I'd love to but the sandy soil here means aeration is never needed.
nice job man, awesome video! Your editing skills are getting beastly!
