Overall would you chose this Echo or is the Earthway 2600a better features?
My suggestion would be to set the spreader setting 50% less than listed on the fert bag and walk the yard twice, in opposite directions. North/South then East/West. With a good throwing spreader this is not a lot of extra work and guarantees a more uniform coverage.
I burned my lawn first time I fertilized.
But we didn’t give up, we kept throwin down (responsibly)
Good insight to the noobs AL

@@Thelawncarenut I’m enjoying your videos and have a question. I’m in another line of work so no competition but can I ask what camera and mic rig you use? You seem to have hit the nail on the head with clarity, volume control and wind noise elimination. Is it GoPro on a gimbal?
@@BTReese I'm NOT the one to ask about this stuff lol. I just use a GoPro9 on a small tripod and a Rode Video Micro with a dead cat. That's it. The guy who started this comment thread, he know ALOT more about good video, lighting, mic, all that
Quick release was my nickname in college...
Nice video sir...
Haha Simon
Off topic but just wanted to say, since I know you are a LCN of faith, that He is risen. He is risen, indeed! Happy Easter, Allyn!
Hey LCN. I fert my lawn every 3 weeks in low dose. In between I give is Humic, RGS and water. My lawn is crazy amazing. Super green, soil test healthy. Mowed at 4 inch. (TTTF by GCI )
Awesome 👍
Never heard of Humic. I have st. Augustin. Will it wk on any grass type?
I have measured my yard but I haven’t calibrated my spreader. My problem wasn’t over feeding my lawn it was under feeding where areas weren’t growing as well as the area I hit. So I took your advice and haven’t had a problem since! Happy Easter my lawn brothers!!!
Very helpful vid. Thank you Allan.
Great info. Thanks!
I mounted cameras to the bottom of my spreader to monitor it lol. No but seriously I have had something stuck in the spreader slot before in fertilizers with non equal prilIs have never burned it but it is something to watch when you close the mechanism make sure it closes. Great video
I’m excited, I just received my order today. Giving you an A++ for quick shipment, and communications. I’ll be up all night watching your vids on how to apply your product.
Nice thanks bro !
I want to say I learnt this from you Hane-r, but I use a 5 gallon bucket and a little luggage scale and weigh out how many pounds of product to use for my application, I’ll usually add an extra pound in to help with the flow of product in the hopper, but know what that pound looks like when I need to be done. But I’ve liked doing it that way. 👍🏼
Sound advice, as always. Thanks, Allyn.
thanks Les!
Thx LCN great Video
EXCELLENT VIDEO !!
Great video AL! Happy Easter!
I always burned my lawn when I held down the lever around each turn. The wheels spread while the lever dispenses. Because the wheels weren't turning much and the lever was held down, a bunch of fertilizer would pile up on the bottom plate and fall off on each turn. I now just release the lever at the end of each run, make the turn and then pull the lever.
Great video addressing real issues and concerns to the lawn enthusiasts everywhere. Great analogy with the vitamins/supplements. Where can we get the red t-shirt?
As always great advice and i do follow your methods of calibration, seems to work just fine. Also i would like to tell those of us that can`t afford expensive spreaders, i take and wash mine rinse it well and then add a paste polish to the hopper to make the items in the spreader come out better. Just thought i`d throw that in hope it helps.
good tip Jim!! Smooth flow is the key. thank you!!!
Yes thanks for this tip. I’ve had issues with my cheap Scott’s spreader due to flow issues. I’ll be trying this out!
What kind of Paste Polish do you use?
Also some fertelizers, have different sized granules. Bigge/smaller/round etc.. I always calculate how much I need for lawn and use only that amount, and adjust my walking speed to that
I still get amazed at people that think a high N number on a bag means it's too much N or that it's dangerous. Gotta do the math people... I can get the same amount of Nitrogen on the ground with Milorganite as I can with Flagship..... Great video Allyn! 👊🏼🍻
You are correct and that’s why it’s important to know how to calculate using the numbers on the bag with your lawns dimensions. Allyn has a ton of great videos on this subject
I watched a video of yours a while ago and, I now measure how many pounds of N that I want to put down per 1000 Sq. Ft. Then error on a liter pass for a new pill size or spreader doing a secondary pass if there is leftover. It never 🔥 burns.
Love the wall decor Al, nice touch to the office
Thanks Nathan! Appreciate it!
Lmao the spreader with the whole bag dumped is exactly what I did my first time and torched my lawn.
it only happens once!!! 😂
Lol right only happens once
You should make a video solely for getting rid of mole crickets. Keep up the good work!
I always fertilize at or slightly above the recommended settings. It's more important to not overlap too much. My lawn is not that big so I use a drop spreader instead of a broadcast spreader. I find you can get a more accurate spread if you can stay on the lines in the grass that the wheels make. Only slightly overlap. Too muck overlap will cause striping.
I run the spreader at a very low rate with the plan to walk it more than once. East to west then north to south. If I'm running hot.... I'll figure it out while I'm still safe.
Other option is just set the spreader to a lower number and make a double pass.
I started with a triple pass, then incrementally dosed up until it was a near perfect double. Now my spreader adjustment has a mark for that fert. Anything with a green up result is best to cross hatch to prevent stripes. If it's Grub killer, or herbicides- no shame in trying to nail it down on a single pass.
Yep. Been there
"Grit eating world"... My Cousin Vinny... That was really clever use of that phrase since the courtoom scene totally correlates. I can't tell if A. It was unintentional, or B. You're a genius... I'm goin with option B.
I just talk funny and sometimes it works out 😁😁😁
I spilled a bunch of Milo a few years ago. The spot was brown for a few weeks and that was after trying to vacuum up what I couldn't grab by hand. There hasn't been a weed in that spot since and it is the best looking grass in the lawn.
Located in Ks. I'm tossing some feedlot 46-0-0. I went to a Scott's Wiz hand spreader and measure 2lbs for 1800 sf. once a month during spring and fall in my front yard. If I don't make my rounds quick enough I still have a bit of play. I found it was easier to see and control the spread from a hand spreader than my Earthway broadcast. Back yard I use my Earthway, as I'm not so concerned of the outcome.
I like those hand held spreaders too! The ultimate in control. 👍
Hey I just got low N and K on my soil test and I bought the recommended Stress Blend fert. I saw that they are suggesting 8lbs/1000 sq ft. I wanted to make sure that isn't too much fert. Thanks!
Thanks Al!👏👏…”don’t throw the whole bag in!”…Lawncology 👑☮️
31 degrees this morning in metro Boston! We need spring to finally come, most likely will be right to Summer heat....
I have the Scotts mini spreader and works pretty good 👍
I have it also. I noticed it leaves lines in the lawn after my first time using it. I found out it’s because the fertilizer gets caught in the cheap wheels. I’m now researching the ECHO 60 spreader.
@@hitfoods1726 so that's what those lines are and I thought it was my lawnmower.
@@aldolopez5296 Yeah man. 4 weeks after my first application, I did another application and this time I made sure I went diagonal as well. It worked but I’m going to buy the ECHO 65.
Couldn't have been more timely. Planning to apply fertilizer for the first time ever!
You got this! Just use the correct amount for the square footage of the lawn and you'll be good.
As others have mentioned, I do this too, use a lower spreader settings and do multiple passes to get better coverage.
Take your time, get to know your spreader and follow the label, and you should be ok. You should also calibrate your spreader to you. Allyn has several videos on that on his channel
How about doing half the setting twice? Would this be safer and ensure better coverage for noobs? I torched my first homes lawn 20 years ago and have only done milogranite since. I can definitely follow your advice in this video, just wondering if that approach might make sense. Could space those applications out a few weeks apart too. To see what happens with the lawn.
@@Carl5379 that works also. You would apply half one direction then the other half another direction
Thank you all!
Lol my spreader fell over and it burned one spot on my lawn. Timely video 😂
I just got my lawn beautiful, full and green. I bought a big spreader and went to town and got lawn burn. I used the hand spreader previously and never had an issue. I now see that I spread too much and have multiple spots of burn. Now I gotta figure out how to fix it.
hitting bumps and other crap and it spills is number 1 for me, I never use high N anymore now
Man this is really good for anxiety man. Something about your voice and delivery.
thank you!
I applied Scotts Starter Fert lightly to my lawn yesterday. I also have some crab grass and weeds that have popped up this spring (Not many). Since I am in Canada and I don’t have a lot of options for pre-emergent, can I put down the Scotts Tripple Action Built for Seeding (Fertilizer and Weed preventer) tight after? Or will it cause damage? I plan to overseed end of May
You're a Fucking beast. Sorry for the vulgarity but you are the best at what you do. You've assisted me to having the most dominant lawn in the neighborhood.
I for one get super involved and research things when I get set on anything.
It wasn't till the past couple years, did I start actually caring about how my lawn looked. I had a legit salad bar in my lawn with little actual "turf grass".
This year for the first time ever, I had 3 dandelions pop up. In years past, I had close to a hundred.
Long story short, there's so many aspects to lawn care I never knew existed. I never thought I could make it to a place where I understood the science and drive behind lawn care. You made the process so much easier and un-intimidating. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
awesome bro!!! thrower down and enjoy the mow!
Know your area of application... weigh the product to be applied and evenly distribute. Works every time.
Can also dial the setting back in half, go north south then again east west
I never calibrate my spreader, but I have a small 2500 Sq feet of yard. My first app every season is a whole bag of milorganite, if that works out for my lawn I figure I'm good for the season.
I threw down flagship today! Throw R Down! I can smell the success!
My Scotts spreader hopper opening clogs open every time when using non-Scotts products, causing a slow spillage all the time. The spring isn't strong enough to close properly. Need to get rid of it and up my game. I prefer applying granular products. Usually i set it just below the recommendation, always gives me two passes for my lawn anyways even with the clogging, so i have never burned the lawn.
Mine left stripes the first time I used it. I read the fert will not get over the wheels if your not walking fast enough. I’m not gonna fill the hopper this time and see if I can walk faster to help. If that doesn’t work, I’m literally going to throw it away before I pass off the problem to someone else.
Okay, my grass is not nice enough to leave visible wheel tracks, so ended up with major fertilizer stripes. They aren’t really growing out. 😬 Next time won’t be as bad because my grass is thicker from the fertilizer, but I’m still going to do the half and half perpendicular method.
Leaf vac with mower deck at lowest possible setting will save your lawn. My pull behind spreader failed me and before I knew it, I put enough starter fertilizer for 15,000 square feet in a 2,000 square foot section. 6 weeks ago and still no burning.
We have a small yard so I have been using a hand spreader for fertilizing. What do you think about hand spreaders?
Thanks! I could not figure out why I burned my lawn and why after I put the entire bag in the spreader I ran out after only doing half the lawn
Do the math to figure out how much product you need per 1000 square feet and use a cheap scale to add just what you need per section. Then take your setting and cut it in half and just go two different directions and you’ll never burn your lawn.
Did you do a review video on the earthway spreader?
I applied Preen to my lawn several weeks ago and it rained heavily right afterwards despite the forecast. I'd like to apply another pre-emergent, because it didn't do anything to the weeds, but is it too soon? I live in central NJ and am trying to get rid of my henbit!
I tend to not fert enough , i do spoon feed but i dont hit it every 3 weeks like i should, instead its 4-5 and my grass ends up suffering a tad in the warmer months. Gotta train myself to kick that old habit of once every 5-6 weeks.
I always try to throw down before a big rain. It seems to work out to 3-4 weeks- sometimes less. Saves watering-in and the grass seems to need more nitrogen when well-watered.
Question: I have Bahia grass and I live in St.augustine FL, the grass is about 4 weeks old, and we are entering into fall, should I think about fertilizing my lawn to help promote a healthy growth? Thank you
Overall do you like this Echo spreader over the Earthway 2600a?
I ordered some more of your stuff over the weekend that was sale. Your prices seem to be a little better than the stuff Doc sells. I have an issue sometimes with a piece of the fertilizer sticking the door of the spreader open.
I have that happen with my Echo too. It's definitely got a few flaws but overall I've found it to be the best bet for the money on a spreader.
After applying, I realized I doubled the amount of 24-0-0 as directed. So immediately I started watering. I put 1.5" of water down in an 4-hour period. Any thoughts on if I cooked my lawn or just pushed a lot of growth...
I didn't notice my spreader was set wide open and the first couple steps dumped a lot of fert on the yard, got some burn spots.
Great video, thank you BUT...I started a complete reno project, grass grew in beautifully, bought an ultra expensive reel mower too boot but just burnt the crap out of the grass because I put too much fetilizer. How can I fix it? Man this hurts😪
Where is the link for the spreader?
The Lawn Care Nut is a wrestling fan? Awesome
Is Flagship good for new grass. I have a spot that I seeded and the new grass is like 1 inch tall. I just don't want to burn it.
Fellow midwesterner. I live in Chicago and weather is calling for highs of 43 on Monday, 49,53 and Thursday being 67 with a couple of rainy days and frost being on the 43 day. My soul temp is 47. I plan to over seed and use Milorganite along with n-ext humic12. would it be ok to do so say on the 49 degree day? Thanks!
Yes if you're going to seed now is the time.
@@Thelawncarenut thanks!
Can I use the bag of leftover fertilizer I used last season on my lawn?
Yes you can. It will still work just fine as long as moisture didn't get in.
can i use 20 year old fertilizer that fused into one solid chunk its still soft enough to break up and wondered if i could dissolve it in water because the birds ate it in a flock and pooed on the windows as they flew away spooked and stuff
Cut grass low in spot then use a shop vac for spill spots lol lol I'm sure that'll work great lol
Wouldn't it make more sense to set your spreader setting to 1/2 of the recommended setting instead of putting in half the bag? If you are over-applying and run out, that part of your lawn is done and could potentially burn. If you have a bag that covers 5,000 sq feet on a 2,500 sq ft lawn, then half the bag should cover your whole lawn. Put half the bag in your spreader at 1/2 recommended rate and see if you have any left in the hopper when you are done. If you have 1/2 left in your hopper, the recommended setting is correct and you can run over your lawn in the opposite direction to empty the hopper. I hope this makes sense..... it's a lot of words :)
Prill size might be too large to fit through a smaller opening of a lower setting.
Can I mix 16-0-0 and 17-7-6 and spread them at the same time?
I have a section of creeping bentgrass (within cool season mix) that I killed off using tenacity last fall. I have a decent section that I pulled up of dead grass and wondering if I should plug, do nothing and hope it fills in, or reseed?
I'm in the same boat. (What a pain that invasive bentgrass is...). I plan to reseed/patch once it finally warms up here (northeast Ohio). Doing nothing will never fill in.
@@pat5873 I have heard Allyn say don’t seed in spring. Otherwise I agree with you. Maybe sod?
Is that yard care boot camp linked in the app?
Not directly. Yardcarebootcamp.com
LCN are you affiliated with any landscaping companies in the Ellenton/Palmetto/Parish area? I don’t have much time to do my own yard but the last company I hired didn’t do a good job. Any recommendations?
where do you recommend buying grass seed online? I have used united seeds in the past but wondering if there are any other websites you recommend? Thanks
I recommend these thelawncarenut.com/collections/grass-seed
I used 8lb / 1000sqft of flagship and it turned my lawn dark green and lush but now it’s getting around 90 degrees outside in Florida. Can I use flagship once it gets to super hot temps??
sure can but the rate should be more like 3lbs/1000
seems like a shop vac might help a spill spot.
Ego Zero turn?
Any link to the video showing how to fix the spill spot? I'm having this problem right now, and the spot is very visible in my front yard and annoying.
it just takes time - the grass will fill back in over time. If it really bothers you, dig it all out and drop a piece of sod. That will give you an immediate fix.
This is why I prefer liquid fertilizer and natural pellet ones. There's too much risk involved with synthetic.
Boom
How do i repair sun burn on my lawn, looks similar to that burn
My lawn looks like shit right now I’m struggling 😅
6:35 - “don’t dump in the entire bag” 🔑🔑🔑
Hey LCN- so I accidentally put didithiopyr instead of prodiamine down last Sunday ( didn't ready the label clearly 🤦🏾♂️). How soon after that blunder can I spread prodiamine? Please help! Thanks brother!
they both work exactly the same so just use whichiver one you want on your next app.
Like the shirt
With 2 knee replacement I cannot move that quick at the moment so I have to set my spread half the normal rate.
Could I use your starter fert in my vegetable garden?
yes you can, 1 lb per 100 sq ft of garden space would be a good start
I use a scale...
If you drop fert on lawn accidentally. Bring out the shop vacuum. Easy clean up.
Just gonna post again here, what fert does everyone use for their Zoysia?
I rotate mine and at times use Simply Organic. In the summer I like the Organic best because it grows slower with the lower nitrogen.
Can you burn only with Nitrogen? Or other nutrients? Like say the micro green and the green effect?
Excellent question! - you can burn with any nutrient in too much abundance. Boron for example can burn if applied too heavy. The reason nitrogen is the one most people focus on is because it's what is the most highly concentrated in most ferts.
when you doing a review on the ego zero turn?
sometime in the next couple weeks. I've been using it and really like it so far
Where'd you get that Boogs shirt? Wwe shop?
yeah he linnked it in one of his youtube vids a while ago and I bought one. 🤘
I sprayed glyphosate for the first time on my ProVista today. It was really going against instinct. Looking forward to seeing the Bermuda nuked.
Everyone says that the first time they do it and we all end up spraying too light. You'll learn over time that you don't have to be light with it, the PV can handle it no prob. I've never even one time seen it get tip burn or anything.
How about striping your lawn? With synthetics, no matter how meticulous I am about the application coverage, I always seem to end up with stripes…how to avoid?!
Do you have a small Scott’s rotary spreader w/edge guard by chance? I bought one last year and striped my lawn for the first time in 20 years. I discovered that the piece of junk throws fertilizer into the well of the right wheel and when it gets full it leaves a trail of fertilizer and burns stripes. Maybe this is what happened to you too. I managed to fix my broken 20 yr old Scott’s drop spreader which I’m using until I find a good spreader. Planning to look into the echo spreader that he used in the video and buying a field king sprayer for liquid applications. (Thanks so much Allyn!)
Anybody else here in the 1% with me? Measure, calibrate, weigh, spread. Domination.
