    Dr. Gandhi is such a compelling speaker, and has been one of the few voices of reason helping people like me to navigate this madness since 2020. She has this combination of intellect, compassion, and humor that seems so rare. Given my high levels of anxiety (in the true clinical sense), if it weren't for people like ZDogg and Dr. Gandhi, I'd still be locked in my house. Thanks, y'all, seriously.

      I teach (at the community college level) in Chicago, and I will testify 100% that not being able to know what anyone looks like or share everyday empathy and warmth through facial expressions takes the joy, heart, & soul out of teaching. What kind of "future" are we preparing these young people for -- a future of skulking around foreve behind masks in a world devoid of facial expression, fearing ourselves and one another as toxic? I can't abide being complicit in that -- I''l retire first (which I fear I'll have to do at the end of this next Fall semester).

    • @jazzmanchgo
      @jazzmanchgo 2 роки тому +1

      I do have to ask, though -- where are you? I'm reading some pretty ominous stories about the current surge, its effect on some hospitals (some in upstate NY have begun to curtail non-emergent serrices again, and waiting times are getting longer), and how it's predicted to blanket the country within a few weeks. A lot of people are predicting another "COVID Summer" for the US.

      I feel the same. I appreciate this podcast for the expertise and spirit of both Dr Z and Dr Gandhi. But, please stop forgetting about all of us healthcare facility workers that have wearing masks non-stop for almost two and a half years. How do WE move forward? If the evidence shows no difference between communities with mask mandates and those without, what does the body of evidence show regarding universal masking in healthcare facilities?

    • @jazzmanchgo
      @jazzmanchgo 2 роки тому

      @@brendaryder7363 Surgical masks, of course, are designed to block larger droplets -- blood, saliva, etc. -- but they do little if anything to filter out airborne viral pathogens. I'm not a medical professional, but my guess is that people working in healthcare settings will probably still be advised to use surgical masks in situations where it's always been considered necessary. I'm hoping, though, that for standard patient-practitioner encounters, where face-to-face empathy is such a vital component, masks won't be required unless (of course) the patient is showing symptoms of illness (be it COVID or otherwise). Floor nurses who aren't working in a COVID unit or the ICU? That;s a tough one, because at least in theory, even if they were asymptomatic, they could still infect patients. ( I must say, though, that some nurses I know are so used to wearing masks that they're literally afraid to take them off in any public settings, not just at work.) I'm also wondering what the requirements will be for people (friends, family members, etc.) who are visiting the hospital. It's amazing to realize that until two years ago, people strolled down hospital corridors and visited rooms without even thinking about wearing a mask, unless it was a particularly high-risk situation. I don't ever remember a nurse or a doctor visitng my room in a hospital, wearing a mask. And sharing those smiles was a healing thing, in and of itself!!

I know vaccinated people with long covid as well. Us with long covid are very afraid of reinfection because in some of us- it makes our illness way worse. Or in people who have recovered, they relapse.

      @@DDRMR The massive strawman of "Oh so you want endless lockdowns and suicides" is ridiculous and says a lot about your bias. There is nuance between pretending the pandemic isn't there and going for zero covid.
      The tragedy of people that think the way you do is that if a more virulent strain pops up, we will yet again be wholly unprepared for it. Dr Ghandi has been making incorrect predictions for pretty much the entire pandemic (watch the interview - its out there) and Campbell has been caught a number of time mis representing medical studies by some highly qualified people. The world is in a great place right now but pretending everything is fine is a fantasy.

    Great show. One thing - I'm not sure how much blame can be laid at the feet of public health authorities for creating unnecessary fear. Yes, they clearly got stuff wrong. But I remember the early days of the plague. New York ran out of room for bodies, and had to create a mass grave on Hart Island. Stuff like that can be a little unnerving and a bit apocalyptic.

No. Overwhelmed more than in the last 15 years? No.

    The problem with people not taking the vaccines fast enough was the idea that people who were vaccinated and did not currently have covid were forced to wear a mask over a year after they were vaccinated. The masks should ahve come off and stayed off about 2 weeks after vaccination

    That was an excellent analogy about expecting HIV positive people in the 80s to stop having sex (even though it bothered me personally at the time) but the public health officials continue to tell us what to do over THIS virus!? (There still is no vaccine for HIV though either, am I right? 🥺) Excellent discussion!!

      Over 60% of human communication, incl. showing and sharing of empathy, occurs via facial expressions. It's how we've evoled; it's indigenous to our species. The masks may well have been necessary during the crisis stage of the pandemic, but living indefinitely in a masked-up world bereft of facial expressions, fearing outselves and one another as toxic, is not mentally healthy -- for children or adults -- and should not be accepted as "normal," now or in the future.

    I still ware a mask in public areas where shopping especially for essentials happens. Not for me but because I also go without masking in places like small crowded music venues like bars and realise there may be people there who are worried and trying to get supplies for vulnerable people. Outside of that I am living as I was pre covid. I could understand the need for using the blunt tools of lockdowns or mask mandates during the worst of it at the start of the pandemic but now I see how we are in a different phase and the positive difference in my mental health having unfettered social contact with friends and the general public is powerful.

      Good for you -- you're using your judgment and doing what feels safe for you, and you're also being considerate of others. I belive masks should be voluntary, with the caveat that if someone is high-risk (immunompromised, et al.), a good, well-fitting N95 is strongly recommended. Problem is, this issue has gottten so damn politicized that anthing except extremist virtue-signalling name-calling seems impossible. Half the world would call you a "mindless brainswashed sheep" for using a mask on occasion, and the other half would call you a narcissisitc granny-killer for not wearing one all the time.

    Really enjoyed listening to these two vibrant, life-loving expert people! I am still quite concerned about Long Covid risk, as I keep hearing about and from people who seem to be struggling to recover from a covid infection and have health/athletic ability affected, and cognitive effects, despite being triple-dose vaccinated. In my country we have very high vaccination rates and very high infection rates, and many people are now on their second covid-infection, which is not necessarily milder. So it is very confusing and I will keep looking for more information before I stop being paranoid! :) It's not only hospitalisation and death that bothers me, it's long term health impacts.
