    The way he's acting is the performance! It's all deliberate and meant to go with the song!

    • @Jay-sg7rf
      @Jay-sg7rf Місяць тому +1

      Not really deliberate. He has stage freight and how he learned to deal with is by acting. He becomes characters which helps him deal with his fear.

    • @chrisfuller2069
      @chrisfuller2069 20 днів тому +2

      @@Jay-sg7rf You say it's not deliberate, and then go on to say that he becomes characters on stage. That's describing a deliberate action. He was portraying himself deep in a drug induced state, which he deliberately planned ahead of time. You are correct however that it's well documented he has stage fright and that such performances are at least part of the motive behind them.

  • @celticmagick
    @celticmagick Місяць тому +31

    His behavior during this performance was him being in character of someone under the influence (supposedly his friend, for which this song is about).
    This song is dealing with addiction and the overwhelming feeling that in order to perform at one's best artistically, one must be under the influence. The addiction is stalking the addict.
    The lines:
    "I am just a worthless liar
    I am just an imbecile
    I will only complicate you
    Trust in me and fall as well
    I will find a center in you
    I will chew it up and leave
    I will work to elevate you
    Just enough to bring you down"
    is actually coming from the perspective of the drug/addiction speaking to the addict. And in the end, the addict would reject any attempts to fight the addiction to continue to achieve artistic greatness. The addict succumbs to the pressure by saying "I want, what I want"

    Maynard's live persona is part of his artistic expression, using it to convey aspects of the music proper, he switches things up with different costumes and personas for different musical endeavours, but he hasn't performed 'like this' for most of this century (if not earlier).
    Nowadays, he mostly sings in silhouette at the back of the stage, letting the band take the lion's share of the limelight.

  • @sumonjamal1653
    @sumonjamal1653 Місяць тому +4

    Yes, Tool's singer Maynard James Keenan is always playing a character onstage - but he isn't a typical lead singer... He sings from the back of stage and u can't really see him clearly during Tool concerts... I saw him dress as a punk rocker back in 2006... He also performed as Robocop... and Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin 😂
    Tool's stage performances are very elaborate w/ special effects & props nowadays, compared to this early performance in Reading festival in England in 1993... about 30 years ago. The bassist here Paul D'Amour was replaced in 1995 by Justin Chancellor (bass)
    Tool take a long time to craft music for their records (Their latest album 'Fear inoculum' took 13 years between records)... and Maynard was frustrated by the band's lack of progress at times by 1999, so he decided to form a new band w/ Billy Howerdel called A Perfect Circle and released their debut album 'Mer de noms' in 2000 and it became a platinum hit.
    In 2007, Maynard released the debut album by his electronic music project Puscifer titled "V is for vagina"... and they have been successful at touring as well. In fact... both A Perfect Circle and Puscifer are touring in 2025 alongside Primus... probably the weirdest tour of the year dubbed 'Sessanta V 2.0'

  • @isuckatguitar6252

    I think he's physically performing the way drink & drugs can possess you, take control from you, that's my take since the song is called Sober.

  • @ggaugh1
    @ggaugh1 Місяць тому +3

    You have heard of method actors, but Maynard was a method performer as a musician. It's not something you see everyday. The song is about a close friend of the band who struggled with addiction. Their friend was an artist who felt he could not be creative without being under the influence of substances. So, Maynard is essentially acting out the disease of addiction, which is why he looks so twisted and possessed. Another thing about Maynard is that early in his career he had a difficult time performing in front of large crowds. So, he would pick a spot somewhere outside of the crowd to focus on to help him avoid getting anxious. 'Sober' is the perfect song to perform for him since he just stares at the same spot the entire song which makes him appear crazy.

    With Tool you will always have to look at symbolism and metaphors. They are deep.

    Maynard Keenan is also the lead singer and lyricist of A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer. Puscifer is my all time favorite. I’ve never seen a deeper widow’s peak hairline than Maynard’s. SUPER talented dude.

    Imagine being in high-school and going to a concert at the small local college amphitheater. On the way in you meet a college dude selling L S D and try it for the first time. The set list included a mix of Opiate and Aenema songs, Sweet Eulogy, Forty Six & 2, Sober, Aenema... man, what an experience.
    The venue with a capacity of only 5,000 seemed to only be 1/3 full because EVERYONE was front and center. The open air amphitheater had super lax security and eveyone was stage diving off the main stage during the performance. I remember it looking like people were floating uphill toward me as I stood in the back of the crowd raised above most of the crowd due to it being an amphitheater. It was wild.
