Maynard preaches to stay in the moment. He does not allow cell phones used until the end where he let's everyone film a whole song. He wants you to be there in the moment and experience the art. If you like the message in this one you should check out his other band A Perfect Circles Disillusioned.
Dude, just about ANYTHING from the Mer De Noms, and The 13th Step albums would be worth the listen. Puscifer is also worth the listen, particularly The Humbling River.
Any Tool is always welcome. AENIMA has to be one of my favorite albums ever . Every song is 🔥 but I think that you would really like 46 & 2 next because you like to analyze lyrics, and that song would be perfect . Also, you mentioned how awesome the instruments are in their songs. Check out Danny Carry drum cam for the song "Pneuma" . It's epic. Thanks for the content
your guys reaction to this was epic. This has been one of my favorite Tool songs. Having been first introduced to Tool while on acid back in the 90's watching Tool and Primus on MTV, the videos are just something else. And I found when I was smoking "herbs" was really the only time I could consume the song in its entirety, all at once. Feeling like I'm on several different planes of existence myself. Their songs are very layered and intricate. It is why I love Tool. Because I'm manic depressive I tend to do things in waves also, but to much more extreme. Like losing myself in a video game for weeks or months at a time, but I always find myself and am able to step back. It's hard for me, because losing myself while manic is easy, but when depressed it's what I feel I need. That need to escape. And being alone with my thoughts is always fun when manic, and a bad trip when I'm depressed. Taking the wheel and keeping control of my roller coaster was the hardest thing to learn. More than getting sober, more than quitting smoking. I have been lucky to keep myself away from social media. I knew what it was turning into in its infancy. I do have accounts for somethings, but I never actually go on them. They were a way to keep in touch with family, then they became less family oriented and more soul sucking. The best times of my life, mentally, is when I'm in the yard doing yard work. I haven't been out there since my dog died a few weeks ago. I think it's time to get back out there.
Maynard is such a unique artistic character. The visuals can be distracting from the incredible music and lyrics. The first time I saw Tool live, Maynard was nude, entire body shaved, one half of his body painted blue and the other half painted white.
when this song first came out in 1996 it was called track 1 because of the offensive nature of the title stinkfist. Started with finger deep in the borderline, then knuckle deep then elbow and finally shoulder basically showing the levels of stimulation society needs to feel alive
Relax, turn around and take my hand. Tool is my favorite band, but like slipknot, personally i have to separate the songs from the videos and this album in particular sounds even better with higher quality source and audio chain, UA-cam compression is quite the eargasm destroyer.
I’m so proud of you guys 😂, you are in the good path of becoming REAL Tool fans, from “I don’t get it “ to “I fell this way”, “I get it”, is a long way of understanding tool lyrics, music, vision …
Nothing is what it seems when it comes to Tool, their metaphors are insanity!!! Have you guys done Vicarious? Or basically any live versions of anything, Maynard’s voice is like magic 😊
I asked Google forever ago what the definition for “Stinkfist” was and she said “Sure” and showed me the thumbnail to this video 😂 this is a great song though 😎
14:22 that build up and crescendo is amazing. You both immediately started bobbing your heads to it in unison. It is almost impossible not to. Great reaction. I am glad you picked up on the metaphor. Amazing how relevant this still is today, when back then it was basically just TV that was desensitizing us to the horrors of the world. I wonder what they think of our constant connection to our phones and social media...
Your friend's observation is really interesting about consuming media (in the shower, in the car, all the time). I never thought about this... Like him, I've always thought it was a positive... but he's right... What time are you spending with your own thoughts, flexing your own brain, letting it reset, etc?

100% agree with you. I've been to and played HUNDREDS (prob close to a thousand) shows in my lifetime (I'm early 40's), and they're becoming increasingly more cost prohibitive. The last Tool show I caught was a couple years ago on the Fear Inoculum tour, and just two tickets halfway back from the stage on the second deck was over $250! I've actually cut back significantly on attending more "mainstream" acts for that reason alone. Fortunately, most of my favorite bands these days are more "underground" and therefore are much cheaper to go see. I will say that not all mainstream acts cost that much. I went and caught Deftones at a local, smaller venue (800 person cap) for $40 a ticket a few years ago.
@maynarddrivesfast804 my friend in Clearwater sees all kinds of concerts, BIG NAMES, all the time for $40-60 at a downtown Amphitheater, but I live in New Orleans, NOTHING IS AFFORDABLE HERE. 😆
Tool are like a subliminal psychology degree if you know they're not just being tools! They use a lot of mentalism tricks combining musical structure and words/NLP, at least, that's what it looks like, discombobulation combined with messages laying under lyrics.
The title and lyrics are exactly what they sound like. Literally can be about fisting, OR our addiction to media The song however, is about the need to constantly dig deeper to find something that finally stimulates us, especially when it comes to media
Each instrument is represented 25% Each member is 25% of the song. 100% complete each song. When they perform, singer Maynard does not "front" the band. He's positioned on the side, sometimes slightly elevated. He's in other bands out front. Adam on Guitar, Justin on bass, Danny on drums, he's 6'8" and played hoop as a Kansas Jayhawk. All of them have had interesting lives. For them to randomly meet up, create their music and share it with us is something to be grateful for. My son grew up with TOOL as a background soundtrack of his life. I planned vacations around going to see them live. He wasnt able to see them until the age of 28 and it was unlike anytime he'd ever been to a concert. More of a religious experience.
Boys I’m not going to lie this song made tears. Because I kept thinking about how amazing life was when we were young and everything was so incredible. The ability to feel something about the smallest of things is truly gone and it really sucks. This song is truly awesome

Black Pegasus makes the craziest faces while listening to Tool. hehe The first track on Tool’s 1996 album Ænima. The theme of this song is about how people will take things to the extreme for pleasure by using “fisting” as a metaphor. Because of this, radio and TV stations were not allowed to say the title of the track on the air. They would instead call it “Track #1.” One MTV VJ at the time, Matt Pinfield, the station’s metalhead, would sometimes send a signal to the fans by waving his fist in front of his nose when introducing the song.

Everything y'all are saying is correct., however in my day a stinkfist was when you stuck your hand down the back of your pants, caught the biggest fart of the day. Then you walk over to your best friend with fist raised, yelling, get right up on him, throw the fart in his face and scream Stinkfist!
You are both right... It's about fisting as a metaphor for the modern world and how we are desensitized through the media and news we consume. It obviously fits even better today than when the song was written.
