Don is on point with the headphones. And when comes to Lateralus, do the whole album on repeat. Goes for all of them really. Love that you're getting in to tool. Don't forget to listen to the music too. I know it's a lot to take in in one sitting but the nuances and builds is a masterclass in itself. Great reaction ❤
Both of your reactions are pure gold. I can still remember the day, in 1993, when my daughter ran into the house yelling we needed to go to the record shop. She just knew I'd love this new band named Tool and of course the album was Undertow. Been hooked since and even went to a concert with her. To get the full Tool experience headphones and complete albums. I always close my eyes and let them take me on a mind journey. Once again thank you for bringing forth long buried memories. Music is huge in my life. ☮❤🙏
I think this is one of the less abstract songs of Tool, lyrically. I mean it's obvious what it talks about it just uses big words and interesting metaphors. It isn't abstract it just doesn't use the same old tropes for relationships.
I would agree on both counts. Tool is a multi visceral auditory and visual experience. For a first listen it’s much too distracting to decipher their videos and lyrically it’s so deep that it actually can take away from the musical experience of a first time listener. But once you’re a fan you start to realize that each artistic expression allows you to experience the very same song on many different levels and each experience will be unique!
Tool is one of the best live concerts on the planet, when you go to their show they play their videos on screen while live performing on the stage ! It was one of the best visuals i have been to just like a Ramstein concert! The showmanship is top notch, The same with A Perfect Circle!
More tool. Love it. Great reaction. Tool is always open to interpretation. Listening to it at different times can provide a different experience by where you are at in life.
One doesn't listen to TOOL. You experience it. You ride it and hold on. At the end you take a breath, think about what just happened, and check to make sure you're still here. And don't pay attention to any video, but just hold on.
In my mind schism is talking about the schism between the left and right hemispheres of the brain, the schism between the feminine and masculine nature of consciousness, the schism between man and woman, and the schism between the macrocosm and microcosm. There is a literal meaning to the lyrics but also a esoteric meaning. There’s a lyric about squaring the circle, which is a geometric challenge where you trace a square over a circle using phi. The square should have the exact same surface area as the circle. Phi is a Greek number that represents the golden ratio, it represents oneness, and nothingness, it is the signature of the god in reality. So through phi you’re able to create two different shapes equal yet different, man and woman created by god. There is also a term for reconnecting the left (analytical, intellectual, masculine) and right (emotional, creative, feminine) hemispheres of the brain, it is called the Alchemical Wedding, or the Chemical Marriage. That is the Magnum Opus, or the Philosopher’s Stone where through the refining of consciousness you become divine. interestingly there is an Emo band called My Chemical Romance, which makes me think they knew the concept.
Have you gone through the marriage yet? - and yeah this is very twin flame/union of the two halves, etc - then the video section with them on all fours has me thinking it's showing the process of a kundalini awakening and evolution through the levels of consciousness, that section would be 2D/sacral center. Feminine side evolves first then aids the masculine side in doing the same, leading to a purification and expulsion of lil ego monsters
Very well said. I always felt he had an esoteric approach to his 3 bands. Tool being his Masculine/"Active" outlet (+) APC being his Feminine/"Passive" more reflective outlet (-) and Puscifer being directly influenced from the other 2 his inner child/"Neutral" experimental anything goes kind of outlet (=). Tool is a Monad and APC together creates the Dyad and Puscifer becomes the Vesica Piscis of the Two so to speak.
TOOL is EVERYTHING!!!!! One of my favorite bands of all time. Sheer Brilliance! everything they do is a masterpiece in more ways than one. And the best videos out there, this shows the level of intelligence this man has. He's in a different playing field.
Tool has always just been around for me and I never listened to the lyrics of this song so closely till now. I like the idea of this being about the problems in a relationship and then "I know the pieces fit cuz I watched them fall away". it's like I know this can work because it did before - I saw it fall apart, it can be put back together again. Thanks for the new perspective on a song I thought I knew!
Don’t watch the videos until after you’ve listened to the song. Adam jones the guitarist did animatronics on Jurassic park and other movies, he made the videos
It's a song about the distance between two people, and how the pieces of their relationship fell away must fit back together but the distance is too far, the pieces don't fit anymore. But he's stuck trying to make the pieces fit back together, and he can't believe the pieces don't fit anymore.

If I’m interpreting it correctly as I’m a huge Tool fan..I also interpreted the video especially at the end to visually & metaphorically describe the physical action of what we call Shadow work..Which is basically another word for personal development & when you watch the shadow figure in the scene within the heart..& Shadow work is work within the self…& When you do shadow work you improve your communication including from self to spirit & with others starting from within your heart outward 🤷🏼♀️‼️💯
I would recommend reacting to Stinkfist, Aenema (probably one of their most well known songs), Prison Sex, Lateralus (look up the Fibonacci Sequence first, I believe there's a lyric video that breaks it down but I don't want to ruin it for you guys either.) You have already done The Pot, Sober, and now Schism. I honestly can't think of one bad Tool song. My favorite band to see in concert. Seen them 6 times.

Oh, I remember having the double cassette deck sitting on my room with the lock rock station on, hitting record as soon a song started, then rewinding if I didn't like it. In a way, I kind of miss that. Thanks for the nostalgic good memory.
I always thought this song was about the myth where Zeus split humans because of our pride and we became destined to wander the earth searching for our other half.
I have absolutely loved seeing you getting the meaning of the song completely, the crescendo of the drums being the anger and frustration of not being able to make the relationship work, even if you know that "the pieces fit" but, there's no way forward. I can wait for your next "Tool" song. Recommendation, don't watch the video if it has it. Stinkfist is a banger but the video is also "special" lol
Great reaction, I am glad you turned on the closed caption. Not only is the music but his lyrics are next level. How many people title a song schism and have the words Juxtaposed, disintegrating communication, crippling, tumble, desire, poetry, squaring off, circling, dissonance, mildewed & smoldering, strangled, coveting, silence, tendency, atrophy, compassion, supposed etc into a banger song with incredible music. Go ahead try to use these words to rock any genre song. Maynard is AP literature of song writing yet had a huge following in the rock world.
BP: That's weird. Lol yep, that's Tool! If you aren't familiar with Tool, either watch the video or listen to the lyrics. It's A LOT to try to make sense of both together. They are absolutely amazing in concert! 💜
Tool's videos are such a visual trip, that its often best to listen first then watch :D Cause the video will often give another layer to the lyrics that you don't need when hearing it for the first time :)
WIld! I saw them in 2001 and they had those 'alien' people on stage with them, crawling around like that. It was wild! Behind them, were naked people painted silver, hanging upside down from a rope in front of a big screen with crazy stuff on it!
Love the channel. Been binging, the reaction vids. You're all over the genres, and your chat, seems to be turning you on to a lot of the most ground breaking music. I was a top 40, radio music kid, and where i grew up, i got into rap, from Rappers Delight. 80's teen, so R&B, and dance, then lol. Back into Metal, and Rock, in my 30's. UA-cam music, is my go to now, for streaming music, in the car, and vids at home. Funny story with my son, and music. He turned me, on to Slipknot, and I ended turning him, on to Jimmy Hendrix, when he asked me where a sample, on one of their songs came from lol.
The fact that every relationship is shared 😊 you plant seeds in each other. The lack of connection over time makes you grow fonder for the connection 😅 memory PULLS AT YOUR HEART STRINGS 😂. AS IT EATS AT YOU😅😂. Tool fuels your growth to deal with things and helps to push you through it. Best 3 piece band and singer ❤ ever. Covered Led Zeppelin no quarter H is also one of my favorites 😅
The metronome appears at the start because the songs meter changes 47 time over all it's course. One of the best songs on Lateralus which is one of the best albums ever.
Always down for some Tool. Saw them in concert, finally, in January. Side note, it was the only concert I have ever been to where there was NO line for the ladies' room and the line for the men's room was lined up down the hall. It was glorious. LOL! p.s. I always advise watching lyric videos with Tool wherever possible. The videos are good but they rarely have much to do with the song and they're really distracting.
amazing BP how you got the meaning just with the beginning of the song and Don saying that Schism is a division, and then you add up the division in communication! haha You got it! but also, the video is distracting for it to be the first one you're watching from them. Tool are nothing but ordinary or common... but focus on the song and it'll take you to places and it'll speak to you in many different ways... You can't miss "Song for Marie 1&2" BP... but you have to be ready for it.. it will be really emotional for you. But it is such a beautitul song! anyway, I go on with the reaction, you two rock!
I just saw TOOL Feb. 2024 in Denver Colorado, and they were just OK live. Good but not great, and I will never pay to see them live again. I saw them for the Laterallus Tour and they were phenomenal.
Props for working past the visuals 👏 Y'all did really well with the lyrics so don't let this intimidate you. Good tip to keep in mind if you continue with the mvs, Tool's realm is the abstract. But once you get into them, the sounds, the lyrics, they're easier to connect to the visuals. It's like taking in Art, everyone will pick up on different pieces that fit their perceptions of the world around them. Personally, I love their layers. And their sounds become part of the meaning and fit so well. Def best with headphones. Would highly suggest Danny Carey drum cam version of Pneuma. Beautifully contructed song. Keep on :) ❤
TBH, I didn't know the lyrics to Tool for the first year I listened to them. I definitely fell in love with the music first, then came the lyrics much later.
The song is an actual literal examination of the "Great Schism" also called the "East West Schism" where the Eastern Orthodox churches (Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox...) Split from the Western Church (Roman Catholic) in 1054 AD. Before that All Christians were the same. Both sides had pure intentions to follow the teachings of Christ. Both sides followed the light of Christ that fueled the fire of piety in them that made them point the finger at the others opinion as being wrong. Maynard is saying that if the 2 sides had actively debated the differences of opinion, they could have discovered the truth, but each sides desire to be right strangled that communication and the lack of that communication caused anger between the sides. The song ends positively because of recent events that have started to bring the eastern churches and Catholic church back together shows that the pieces fit. And ultimately, he is using the Great Schism as an alegory of modern relationships.
hes talking about a relationship but the words are such broad and poetic that they referance any relationship of any kind ither one of two individuals in love , friendship , family ..... or it can be extended to the relationship of groups and how they interact within society as a whole.
You could take it as the relationship we have with other humans overall. Nationalities, Religions, political parties we separate in so many ways and have garbage communication with each other that leads to fear and hatred when we should be all one as humans.
Tool started off doing very artistic videos using guitarist Adam Jones's skills as a Hollywood stop motion animator. Over time, they dropped all pretenses of being intellectual and just started making weird videos for the sake of weirding out people after everyone complained about their early videos. Basically, they only try to gross out folks now since that was the only things they were capable of taking away from their initial genuine music video projects. So the joke's on you now
When TOOL comes around you really need to go see them live. We then want your reaction to the show. It would be Amazing lol. I would like to see what you think about the King Diamond: Sleepless Nights live at the Filmore and Devon Townsend : Kingdom. If I could get you to those then Yngwie Malmsteen - Black Star (Live) on his UA-cam channel. Would love to see your reaction to his Guitar playing lol. Great Reaction as always. Really enjoyed. Keep Killing It.
So... she draws the dark thoughts that have taken root inside him out. They take form and she is attacked by his thoughts. As she tries to discard his thoughts and feelings, they multiply and eventually it draws the thoughts that took root inside her head out. That was how I saw the pulling the "Earthworm Jim" and tree limb hair as well as the little clay demons. I would suggest sticking to lyric videos as you first dig into the band's catalogue of songs. This is because there is often just as deep symbolism in the visuals as there is in the lyrics and you don't need to be analyzing them both at the same time.
You two are what pops out when someone types into chatgpt: “Give me two guys that are a perfect mix of every race. Guy on the left is every race above the equator. Guy on the right is every race below the equator” Based
"What didn't make sense was the visuals." The guitarist, Adam Jones, worked as a sculptor, set designer, makeup artist, and special effects artist in Hollywood, and has worked in several films. He uses Tool's music videos as a creative outlet. I don't know that they're really _supposed_ to make sense.
Do "Pneuma drum cam live" for some CRAZY tool drumming. Danny Carey goes off on that one. Every limb doing different poly rythems etc. It's crazy. Vic Firth the drum stick company posted the video. Drum cam video with 34m views!

When it comes to the little people seemingly being formed from the guy after his ear was taken, I see it as the woman taking from the man and pulling everything she can out of him until there is nothing left and it coming back to bite her.

Covered Led Zeppelin no quarter
H is also one of my favorites 😅
The metronome appears at the start because the songs meter changes 47 time over all it's course. One of the best songs on Lateralus which is one of the best albums ever.
Tool is huge in Colorado. They used to do Red Rocks all the time.
This video freaked me out as a teenager, the guys walking on their hands were a performance art outfit iirc, great review guys
Schism is one of my top 3 Tool songs
amazing BP how you got the meaning just with the beginning of the song and Don saying that Schism is a division, and then you add up the division in communication! haha You got it!
but also, the video is distracting for it to be the first one you're watching from them.
I learned this on guitar a while back & it's so medatative to play, you just get into a rhythmic state.
A must add to the Tool list of songs to react to is, Right in Two.
💯 Right in Two, incredible song!
Schizm, Prison, Hit em with the Jizzem! LMAO! love your humor brother. Thank you for the laugh. :)
Tool changes your life and I love all music.
I love Tool so much. Also, would really love to see your take on butthole surfers - pepper. It's a really cool, but really weird song from the 90s
I always felt that the alien-ness of the video was a representation of the alienation within the relationship under discussion. Art.
Danny Carey | "Pneuma" by Tool. Watch this master drummer put in work.
“Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion”
Between supposed lovers
Tool is just different! YES
Props for working past the visuals 👏
Y'all did really well with the lyrics so don't let this intimidate you.
Tool is AI Art before AI Art existed... 🤘🤘
Tool, best band on earth❤
Your faces at the end. Absolutely glorious. Hahahaha
So the joke's on you now
That bass line is so iconic
One of the best bands ever!!! 🔥🤘🏼
Every time i hear this song i only see Maynard playing janga behind the drums screaming i know the pieces fit. You need to do A Perfect Circle.
Schism is a religious chasm that I had decades ago 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 ❤❤❤❤❤
Yeah homie....Lateralus is a ride jack
The look on Black Pebbles/Pegasus face after Dons rap segment. Golden/Priceless! This should be Fun!!!
6:47 Brother man got it, pretty early. That's exactly what he's talking about.
So... she draws the dark thoughts that have taken root inside him out.
You need to listen to that song and pay attention to the drummer Danny Carey
Pneuma.
I saw them perform it back in October, and it was transcendent.
You two are what pops out when someone types into chatgpt: “Give me two guys that are a perfect mix of every race. Guy on the left is every race above the equator. Guy on the right is every race below the equator” Based
My number oe tool track lllloooovvvve iiiiit lads ❤️ Australia 🤜🤛👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🤜🤛♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
"What didn't make sense was the visuals."
The guitarist, Adam Jones, worked as a sculptor, set designer, makeup artist, and special effects artist in Hollywood, and has worked in several films.
He uses Tool's music videos as a creative outlet. I don't know that they're really _supposed_ to make sense.
dir en grey reaction would be something. Lmfao
They've been my favorite band for 20+ years, I would LOVE to see them dive into the world of J rock!
Do "Pneuma drum cam live" for some CRAZY tool drumming. Danny Carey goes off on that one. Every limb doing different poly rythems etc. It's crazy. Vic Firth the drum stick company posted the video. Drum cam video with 34m views!
I love the intro guys. Y'all are amazing together. It does seem like y'all love each
Other and not like each other at the same time. Reminds me of my best friend and i
You guys actually surprisingly got it spot on! I'm impressed.
Ooh! Also do the cover of The Pot by Brass Against feat. Sophia Urista! So good!
When it comes to the little people seemingly being formed from the guy after his ear was taken, I see it as the woman taking from the man and pulling everything she can out of him until there is nothing left and it coming back to bite her.
