This song was written about a close friend who suffered drug addiction but while high his artwork found a very different level, it is a poem of both the torment and enlightenment the mind goes through when high and/or coming down, Maynard not only wished to vocally capture the torment of addiction but visually display it too, anyone who has seen a crack addict in real life may recognise the distinctive contortionist moves he displays... for many this is just a historic song for some this is a much deeper performance, a piece of art on another level just like his friend made.
Do u know the band personally??? I know this is the wikipedia backstory but come on, maybe lyrically written about said friend, but certainly not musically.
@@7empest262 one of the band did an interview back in the days, I recall reading it and yes maybe wiki may support that but I didn't get it from wiki, I grew up to music and have been in bands myself albeit local ones so music has a strong influence on me and I was in my late teens when Sober was out. He’s said that someone close could only write or perform while under the influence or at least needed it in their own mind to be creative musically. Needless to say Maynard wasn’t a fan of this.
The first time I saw the video for this song, it shook me to the core. I am a recovering alcoholic and addict, and this song embodies the pain of addiction. It is an incredibly powerful song, and I loved your reaction. Maynard is out of this world talented.
This performance will always give me goosebumps and bring me to tears, no matter how many teams i rewatch it. Truly a masterpiece that hits really deep!
I can hear the distant sound of the Tool Army approaching... One of the finest live performances, just so captivating to watch and listen to. Gets me every time. The microtones of the guitar just set your nerves on edge too...and the pounding drums feel like your chest is about to burst.
@@wooshbait36 Not true. He isn’t on drugs. He’s never been a druggie. The song is about a friend of theirs that convinced himself that he couldn’t be artistic without being under the influence. Now THAT'S what music is supposed to do to us. Your tears showed Maynard was able to connect YOU to the song through himself and in doing so, feel his pain. BRAVO...well done.
This song brings me to tears every time I hear it. I feel exposed when hearing these lyrics, they cut deep, like a knife to the soul… and for some odd reason, I find comfort in the pain. Maynard is a true genius!
I bought my first Tool CD many moons ago and as I was driving home listening to it I started to cry. I couldn't understand every word (at the time) but the meaning and emotion was conveyed perfectly. MJK is kind of a miracle; in that he shares himself, his ideas, his thoughts, and his memories by creating a bridge from his pain to ours. It is a unique language shared by souls.
It's always nice hearing about new people getting into bands that have been around making awesome music for awhile. I hope you enjoy the rest of their music as well, although.... if it makes you cry, you may not want to listen to it the first time while driving.
The vulnerability, compassion, and emotion, combined with the expertise, technical knowledge, and talent you bring to this channel is mind boggling. I would rather watch you reacting to a song than the actual video of the song. Thank you for coming to me at a time in my life that I desperately needed you. You have so much to offer the world. Thank you!!!! Love the editing too. You have a much higher calling.
One of the best reactions of Sober live ever!! As a huge Tool fan, I got emotional along with you! And your breakdown of the music as a whole was intelligent and authentic! Great job!! Hugs!❤️
Fairy voice mother is literally on the verge of tears as she absorbs Maynard’s lyrics and voice. I was the same upon hearing this for the first time. Respect to you both both 🙏
I have always agreed with the idea that his posture is part of the performance, evoking an addict in the throes of withdrawal. Also, with Maynard's anxiety issues, he usually picks a point or person he feels comfortable looking at on stage... imagine being the person he stared at as he belted out this song, eyes just boring through you. Maybe check out A Perfect Circle, Judith.
Oh man....So I was just finishing my 6 year degree in University when a friend of mine asked if I wanted to go to a metal concert to see Maynard. I was already in the car honking the horn, like "Duh, yea of course I want to f'ing go, lets move!" I never, in my wildest dreams thought we'd be witnessing history. I personally feel, this is Maynards best performance ever. It's like he tapped into the old gods and personified Cthulu on stage. His stare literally melted brains in the first 3 rows and his vocals drove the rest of us into insanity. I think the term I am looking for is visceral. I literally stood there just staring at the stage for I dont know how long afterwards. Could have been 5 minutes, could have been 15 *shrug*, trying to comprehend what I had just witnessed. It was one of the most intense performances I've witnessed until I went to see Nightwish at Wacken 2013. Luv your work miss, and taking it this far back that only those of us old geezers would have seen it live is just heart warming. Dont let the greats die, keep us all alive in your reactions !!
Probably the best reaction I have ever seen. It was genuine and you saw the raw talent of the song, the artist, and the art in it. Best thing I have seen in a long time. This song I have listened to for almost 30 years and it still brings tears to my eyes. Simply spectacular!

Hello Ms Fairy! I am one of the many people who have requested you to react to this video for a loooong time now. Im so glad that you did, as you really had an awesome breakdown (as expected!) BTW, you just missed Tool as they played in Manchester on May 2, Birmingham on May 4, and London on May 9. Finally someone who understands the genius of it all. Love your channel. I could not wait to see your reaction due to your singing ability and and knowledge of music and anatomy. Not just a hollow mindless reaction. Love ya love the glasses.
The observation of his sharpness is so good. It feels like he's barely in control which just reinforces the meaning of the song. You are tremendously good at this!
I've watched as many vocal coach reactions to this performance as I can find and many of them are great but yours is without question, the best. You're very sincere. Cheers!
I think the aspect I enjoyed the most about watching this reaction, above all the other multitudes of reaction vids I’ve consumed, is seeing the genuine emotion of a fan seeing a live Tool performance for the first time and re-living those exact memories and feelings of my first Tool concert. There’s the excitement, almost-childish giddiness, emotional connection to the point of being overwhelmed to tears for no real reason at all other than being part of the communal sense of awe and release of energy, and then pure appreciation and thankfulness.
Superb analysis as always! It does not surprise me that you like Tool, this just confirms your great appreciation for quality music. I love your content! Please NEVER stop doing it Lolli! Big hug from Italy!
I've been listening to Tool since the 90s when I was something like 11ish yrs old and has become a soundtrack to my life.... The older I get the more of an emotional reaction I get. So many of the songs have my eyes well up... U can physically feel the meaning of the lyrics

Can't wait to follow your journey with hopefully more TOOL reaction videos 😎 PUSHIT live performance from the SALIVAL Album will have you on another planet and ruin all understanding of music as you know it 😮
They are so much better live then the studio recordings, not necessarily because they play differently but rather because you can see the embodiment of their music as they preform. The human connection is stronger live. I've only been able to see them once at Coachella in 2006 right before 10000 Days came out and it is still the best live show I've ever been to. See them live, and if you haven't already check out Maynard's side projects A Perfect Circle and the group Puscifer. Both are incredible in their own right 💗

You are so right on with your comments on every performer you evaluate. So refreshing compared to all the other vocal critiques. Thank you for starting a UA-cam site for vocal comments.
At 6:48, The Fairy Voice Mother arrives at the second verse and Maynard reaches out and touches her. She gets it. Never gets old watching Tool rip ppl to their emotional core.
I've seen them many many times over the years, most recently earlier this year in Tampa Florida. I was fully prepared to be very forgiving as a listener, as the band members aren't exactly 25 years old anymore. I was excited for sure, but made sure I tempered my expectations ahead of time. Then they performed Hooker with a Penis. To say that I was silly for thinking I needed to give them an OUNCE of forgiveness was an understatement. Maynard, Danny, Adam, and Justin were utterly flawless, and it was up there with the best performance I have ever seen in my life. So your comment rang very true with me.
I am thrilled to find that you enjoy Tool...their performances have changed dramatically through the years...to see more of Maynard in the present, I might suggest something from Puscifer...that way you can also get a taste of Carina Round's phenomenal voice. Anyway, adore your reactions, you always make me smile...thank you!
Step further down the rabbit hole. Listen to Carina's solo work. She's so underrated. I don't think a "reactor" has given her a chance yet. "On Leaving", "Let it Fall", "Slow Motion Addict", "Do You", "For Everything a Reason", you can't miss. She has a vast range of styles from heavier like "Sober" to very emotive like "10,000 days". I will say keep Tool in mind though, remember we didn't fall in love with every song on first listen, and some felt like they took forever to finally build to the good part. "On Leaving" is a good example of that, beginning is a bit slow, but about half way in you get slapped in the face and you can't stop grooving.
Yuuuuuuuuuuuup! I first watched this performance back when I was in high school about 18 or so years ago. I was FLOORED when I first watched this. It's so damn great! Really happy that you enjoyed it. :) If/when I have ideas, I'll hop on back and suggest them. :)
You're quite amazingly articulate in expressing the vocal and analysis of tool. Great to see, since I've probably seen 25 other reactions to this same video lol. Along with the army that is here with me. Hey guys where are ya?
absolutely fantastic video...ive seen many vocal coaches react to this video, but i must say that your reaction and breakdown are by far the COOLEST ive seen....great job
Seeing Tool live is an experience that can't be described. It's a life changing experience. I suggest you definitely find a way to go as soon as you can. Love your video and your response ❤️
A fantastic analysis, we Tool fans are very passionate about the band and we love people who can take the time to listen and totally get into it as the band would I'm sure. Please enrich us by doing a few more Tool songs. Thank you. x
I have been to seven Tool concerts. All of them were great.Great is no exaggeration. Mind blowing. In all of those shows,I've seen Maynard's face exactly zero times. Think I should go to an APC concert.Keep rocking.🤟✌🤙🖖
I love the detail and expertise you put into these videos. Also that you were able to really feel that emotion and appreciate the wonderfulness that is TOOL on such a deep level. Watching you react to the raw power and influence these guys have was refreshing and beautiful.
Being one who has suffered from addiction, and knowing the claws involved... this song hits home for a lot of people. The performance he puts on stage as said... is the personification of the lyrics.. that is what makes this performance second to none... the importance of the message is more important than his posture. He has a story to tell, and WILL tell it.
I had the absolute pleasure of finally seeing Tool live a couple of months ago for the first time and it was one of the most amazing shows I've ever experienced. Maynard and crew are absolutely brilliant.
You are an information Goddess! Stumbled across you on a Jinger deep dive and have subscribed ever since. I don't sing... I don't know anything about music theory...but after I watch a break down of yours I feel like I have the clues to recognize some of the hidden, driving components that lead me to come back and listen again... and again. IMO you are building an audience that people like Elizabeth at The Charismatic Voice, or Julia Nilon have come to represent. Keep up the good work, I'll do what I can to spread the word.
when I watched this presentation of the tool for the first time I also got emotional in the same part as you, I had a crying crisis, his voice touched my soul, my mother when she saw me asked if something had happened and I just answered this one music touched me.
One of the best analysis I have ever seen when describing why Maynard squats. You are absolutely correct. I have sang many a songs in my life, but when it comes to Tool, the technique he has comes natural when singing. Those who feel the energy know what I mean. I find myself naturally squatting to reach higher notes, because my abdominal muscles push this air out in a more easy and efficient manner vs standing straight up. I think Maynard is is the ground breaker when it comes to other posturing when singing. Physical manifestation of his lyrics. And the music. Yes. I feel anyone can be this connected to music....you just gotta be vulnerable to yourself, naked and unafraid. Much dancing is choreographed today, but Maynard is natural. You can see every note through him. Subscribed.
Wow! So glad I happened upon your channel. Your reactions to Voiceplay and Tool are just priceless. I'd love to see your reaction to Geoff Castellucci's Far over the Misty Mountains Cold, he, of course, is the bass singer for Voiceplay. Or, I haven't seen many reactions to Alter Bridge's Words Darker than their Wings, Live from the Royal Albert Hall. You can find both of these easily here on UA-cam. Look forward to more from you soon!
I saw tool live back in february and they played this. It was mind blowing. Maynard mainly hangs in the back these days so it can be hard to see him emote but he still does it. You need to put seeing them live on your bucket list.
Great analysis of an amazing musician. And as always, I love seeing and hearing the passion you have for music, for singing, and generally for the human experience.
There are a lot of great live performances out there from this era, and this one is in the epic category. Love the new specs, you chose well. Keep up the great work, you're doing awesome.
The way you explain your thoughts is amazing. Thank you for making this video. Also, the way you say baby is awesome, not sure if that's just a you thing or an English thing. 😁
This analysis is amazing, you talk about the science of the voice but more importantly because you have so much empathy you feel and understand the pain in this performance. That makes you SO attractive (not in a flirty way) and fascinating to watch. I hope you do much more metal :)
It's so fun to watch music lovers after the fact witness how hardcore and emotionally heavy 90s music was, it wasn't trying to relate, it was trying to express something deep without context, and we all made our own connections and meaning. I love how she mentions how powerful the performance was, because when you express something deep it's powerful.
I actually attended a Tool concert here in Idaho earlier this year and can attest for how incredible of a performance they still put on. Their visual effects are amazing! They were very quick to shut down people trying to film and take pictures. Would recommend!

3:52 i immediately did a posture check on myself and sat up right in my chair. Thank you
Desperation is pretty much the best summation of this song, and the performance is just artistry.
watching your reaction is what i imagine i look like everytime i watch this performance. and ive seen them live 14 times.
Loved your reaction so much. Tool is for me personally one of the greatest bands of all time. Maynard is a vocal genius.🤘😱
So glad to have caught you live during the premier. I just saw Tool in New Orleans. BIG FAN OF YOURS! Thank You
Yuuuuuuuuuuuup!
Hey guys where are ya?
maynard is an amazing performer with unbelievble vocal abilities ,46 and 2 is my favorite song by tool you should react to that ......
absolutely fantastic video...ive seen many vocal coaches react to this video, but i must say that your reaction and breakdown are by far the COOLEST ive seen....great job
Seeing Tool live is an experience that can't be described. It's a life changing experience. I suggest you definitely find a way to go as soon as you can. Love your video and your response ❤️
I was watching reactions and all the other ones just passed me off. You're amazing and thank u for this video. Sorry just love Maynard
If I could like this video 100 times, I would... best analysis ever
Why can I only like this once? Nice to see a professional reacter enjoying a video so much. It did the same to me first watch. 👏👏👏
The first time I saw this performance it floored me. I've been a tool fan for a long time but omfg this... It still leaves me speechless.
We love watching your absolute Love of music. Thanks FVM for another great video!
A fantastic analysis, we Tool fans are very passionate about the band and we love people who can take the time to listen and totally get into it as the band would I'm sure.
Please enrich us by doing a few more Tool songs.
Thank you. x
Very emotional reaction... one of my favorite bands of all time
Judith-A Perfect Circle.thnx for the excellent review FGM.
I have been to seven Tool concerts. All of them were great.Great is no exaggeration. Mind blowing. In all of those shows,I've seen Maynard's face exactly zero times.
Think I should go to an APC concert.Keep rocking.🤟✌🤙🖖
Love when you sang a few lines from the song, powerful and gritty with control (y)
Watching your face during every lyric was literally priceless. Great breakdown. What a journey. Wonderful.
I had the absolute pleasure of finally seeing Tool live a couple of months ago for the first time and it was one of the most amazing shows I've ever experienced. Maynard and crew are absolutely brilliant.
I just saw them live a few months ago. O.m.f.g. they are seriously SO good. Especially at their age.
I have been all over the world watching tool and the amount of energy they push out is insane love them so much.
Thanks for more stellar commentary… spot-on, as usual. ❤️
Her range of emotions during the video is spot on of what you experience when you watch this. Masterpiece❣
Lol, my youngest daughter was actually an 11 pound, 2 oz newborn.
I really enjoy your analyses, this one is excellent as usual!
I love the way she enjoys a new music for her, and the train of feelings she find.
This is one of my favorite reactions ever.
Loved ur reaction ❤️❤️
when I watched this presentation of the tool for the first time I also got emotional in the same part as you, I had a crying crisis, his voice touched my soul, my mother when she saw me asked if something had happened and I just answered this one music touched me.
Thank you
I saw tool live back in february and they played this.
Thank you! What a great breakdown and reaction. Any Tool, and I'll be here for it.
I still stop by every few months just to watch this reaction again. I absolutely love it! 💚💚💚💚
Real reaction to a real performance....like a feedback loop of emotional honesty. Much respect.
Tool is the best band on the planet. You might have just become my absolute favorite.
this is an amazing reaction and analysis of Sober. I’ve been listening to Tool since the 90’s and they have always touched me.
Just seen tool a couple months ago. Maynard is one of a kind.
